Am well

I took train at 8:30 A.M. and arrived in Salt Lake at 5:00 P.M. and spent the evening at home.

2 December 1924 • Tuesday

Home. All well. A Stormy day. I spent part of the day at the Temple. Set apart six missionaries and attended the missionary meeting as usual. In the evening the Efficiency Radio Co. put a Zenith Radio set into my home on trial. It snowed most all day and night, I judge, for there was a good depth of wet snow on the ground when I retired.

3 December 1924 • Wednesday

Home

All well

About 12 or 15 inches of heavy wet snow on the ground this evening morning.

Mother and I went to the Temple as usual where we spent a busy day. Attended my circle meeting in the evening and the latter part of the evening at home with the radio.

4 December 1924 • Thursday

I went to the Temple and presided [page break] at the morning meeting as usual. Attended weekly Council meeting sealed five or six couples and attended to desk work, correspondence &c. Made ready & took 5:15 P.M. U.P. train for Denver, thence on to San Luis Stake via D & RG Ry.

My daughter Nina leaves tomorrow 100 P.M. for N.Y. to meet her husband who is returning from Germany where he has served more than two years as a missionary.

5 December 1924 • Friday

On UP train

I retired early and had a good night’s sleep.

Am feeling well. I enjoy the studying I am able to do on the train. Arrived in Denver 12:13 and took train out at 7:00 P.M. for Alamosa. While in Denver I walked up town and back and sat in the Ry. Station and read & studied until train time. Took 7:00 P.M. D.&R.G. Ry train for Alamosa.

6 December 1924 • Saturday

Arrived in Alamosa at about 6:40 A.M. 40 min. late. Got train out for La Java at about 7:40 A.M., 20 min. late. I was met at La Java station by Bro. John W. Shawcroft of the Stake Presidency who took me to Sanford where the conference was to be held. I consulted the stake presidency about making a change in the Presidency. They approved so we worked & planned to that end. I was one of the speakers in the forenoon meeting and occupied 50 minutes upon the subjects. Stake Conditions, ward teaching, Faith & works vs lukewarmness, Valiant, rebellious and neutral there & here. Avoid disappointments when we get over there. [page break]

At the close of the forenoon meeting we had the H. Council & Bishops together and presented the matter of release of the Stake Presidency, took silent written expression as to choice of Presidency. I tabulated returns & presented the names of James P. Jensen for president, who was unanimously approved. Later he chose his counselors, Bp. Johns S Reed of Sanford and John J. Brady of Manassa. These were presented with the release of the Stake Presidency and after the meeting I set them apart, i.e. Bros Jensen & Reed. Bro Brady was absent. We selected for the presidency of the H. Priests Presidency the vacancies arising from the selecting of Bro Jensen for Stake President, Samuell Jackson, John W. Shawcroft and Ray P. Christensen, the two former were set apart by me before presenting them to the Conference as Bro. Shawcroft had to leave for Denver. At the Afternoon meeting, I was one of 10 speakers and occupied 35 minutes, subject: Except ye are one ye are none of mine Fault finding. Never say no. Sustain authority & help the Lord to save [illegible].

At a meeting of Stake Presidencies we selected for the New Bishopric of Sanford, Henry W. Valentine for Bp, Wm. C. Christensen & Wm. A Coulter Counselors. We administered to a sister at the meeting house and to two children in the Mortensen home. I took dinner at Bro Jos. P. Jensen & spent the night there. This has been a busy day but every thing went off all right. I had a wakeful night last night [page break] and have some cold today. The weather is cold with cold snow & wind.

7 December 1924 • Sunday

Sanford, Col.

Cold weather

My cold worse.

I attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency called for 9:00 A.M. and at that meeting I gave instructions and ordained John J. Brady of Manassa a H. P. and set him apart 2nd Counselor to Pres. James P. Jensen in the Stake Presidency.

At the 10 A.M. Con. meeting I was one of seven speakers. I occupied about 35 minutes. Repentance & Lesser Priesthood, recited several poems. I spent an hour between meetings in consultation with brethren. At 2 P.M. meeting I occupied 70 minutes with good liberty on the first principles of the Gospel. Read comments by [illegible].

After this meeting, I set apart a Bishop 4 Bps’ Counselors, 2 H. counselors, a counselor in the H.P. Quorum. Administered to several people &c. I took train at 7:14, arrived in Alamosa at 7:45. Took sleeper and left Alamosa for Denver at 8:30 P.M.

8 December 1924 • Monday

Arrived in Denver at 7:30 A.M. Got train for Salt Lake at 1:30 P.M. Arrived in Salt Lake at 8:45 A.M. Deep snow and a cold day. My cold is better but I am quite hoarse. I spent part of the day at the Temple. Attended Bd. meeting of the U.I.V. Co. Spent the evening at home returning late. Entertained with the radio. K.E.O. Oakland came in with a grand opera in fine shape. I am still hoarse. Others fairly well.

10 December 1924 • Wednesday

Home.

I am still hoarse.

I went to the Temple as usual but on account of my hoarseness I got Jos. F. Smith Jr to make the announcements in the meeting and to attend to the sealings of the living.

Yesterday I received a letter from my son-in-law Charles T. Murray of Eugene, Oregon saying he would like to get a temporary position down here for a time while looking for a permanent place. I arranged with the Presiding Bishopric, with whom Charles worked for a time before starting to school, to give him a job for the period Jan 1st to Apr. 1st and some of the work should be expert work, auditing the L.D.S. School of Music at experts price. I mailed a letter to Charles today informing him and later sent a telegram, so we expect them for Christmas.

At about noon my so George phoned that he had received a telegram from Orin, in N.Y. saying he and Nina had met and that he had a rough voyage but that it was worth it.

I spent the day evening at home. Mother and daughters held their meeting at our home. We retired late.

11 December 1924 • Thursday

Home.

Much snow and cold weather obtains.

I am still hoarse with cold. Attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Wrote letters &c. Desk work. Left for home tired at about 6:00 P.M. I radioed the [page break] remaining part of the evening.

12 December 1924 • Friday

Home.

Some better of my hoarseness.

I arose soon after 5:00 A.M. Went to the Temple as usual where I spent a busy day. With the assistance of Bro. Israel Call I arranged the Schedule of workers for the beginning of the year when we are to add an other day to endowment work. I went home about 8:00 P.M.

13 December 1924 • Saturday

I had the Gas Man, Jos Young of the U Gas and Coke Co. come up and look at our range. I rode down to the Company’s office and I there bought a No [blank] Gas range, Price $120.00, 10% disc., $108.00. I made my check for the $108.00 Mr. Young is to take my old range and pay me $10.00 for it when he disposes of it. This is Mother’s Xmas present. I went to the Temple where I spent some time at my desk.

14 December 1924 • Sunday

I attended Ensign Stake Conference but not by appointment. Stephen L. Richards was the appointed visitor and the speaker at the Tabernacle in the afternoon. The morning meeting was held in the Assembly Hall. I attended the sacramental meeting in the 27th ward in the evening and heard S.L.R. over the Radio after 9 P.M. Had a number of others present.

15 December 1924 • Monday

I spent most of the day shopping and otherwise pre[page break]paring for the approaching Christmas. I received a telegram of 50 words from Charles in Eugene, Ore and answered by voice. This was about his future course. Mother and I attended the Victory Theater with Clarence & Mamie after 9 P.M. This evening for the first time we got Denver K.O.A. on the radio receiver. Ray reported that he got Springfield, Mass. for the first time. This day two leading characters in the Church died, viz. Pres. Seymour B. Young and Henry McCune.

16 December 1924 • Tuesday

I attended to desk work at the temple and married a couple, Millerburg & Brady.

One of Bro. McCunes Sons called on me and Consulted me with respect to the funeral services of the father and desired me to be one of the speakers. I asked Bp. Davis and he took me in the Church Auto down to see Pres Penrose and while there at 1145 So., 9th East, we administered to him. We called and administered to Theodore Tobiason at 2275 Lake St. I spent the evening at home and retired at 12 o’clock.

17 December 1924 • Wednesday

Snowing & heavy fall of snow during the night.

I went to the Temple as usual. Sealed 17 couples living & some living to dead. Attended to desk work &c.

18 December 1924 • Thursday

I attended Council meeting, the funeral services of Henry F. McCune and attended to my work of the Temple. I called upon Mr Meyers of the U.P. System, Chief Auditor, and left with him the application made by Chas. for a position and while Mr Myers had nothing to offer he gave good advice. He advised that Charles begin business in Salt Lake as a Certified Public Accountant for which he had been preparing himself and for which he seemed so well prepared.

19 December 1924 • Friday

I was the speaker at the meeting in the Temple this morning. Attended to my duties in the Temple as usual. Had a conversation with Bro. Lorenzo Stohl and invited him to become a Temple worker. He accepted.

Attended a part of the funeral services of Pres Seymour B. Young. Left by permission of Pres Grant to attend to the sealings of about ten or twelve couples.

Received telegram from Charles at Eugene, Oregon saying: “Hold position P.B.O. will leave sometime Tuesday.

We left the Temple about 8:00 P.M.

20 December 1924 • Saturday

Very cold weather. Belo Zero.

I went to the Temple and answered letters and attended to desk work generally. I wrote Payne & Greenhalgh, Pres. E. J. wood and others. Prepared cards for mailing. Did some shopping &c.

Mother and I went to Bountiful in the evening & attended the Golden wedding [page break] reception of Bro. & Sis. Israel Call. I made a presentation speach of about three minute and presented Bro & Sis Call with $55.00 in Go[l]d from the Temple workers.

21 December 1924 • Sunday

Much snow and snowing.

All well. I spent the day at home. Met Orin and Nina at depot. Orin returning from Germany & Nina from N.Y.

His folks & others came home with us and we spent a pleasant evening. Heard Bro. Adam Bennion’s talk over the radio. Christ life &c.

22 December 1924 • Monday

Much snow & still snowing. I made pathes. Prepared Xmas presents. Looked after mail. Did some Xmas shopping &c.

23 December 1924 • Tuesday

All well.

I went to the Temple as usual. Attended to some shopping. Took Mother & Lucena to the Pan at 8:00 P.M.

24 December 1924 • Wednesday

I sealed two couples and attended to other desk work at the Temple. Did some shopping & other ways made ready for Christmas. Sat up until 2:00 A.M. preparing for Xmas. Had a tree and numerous presents. We had with us Orin & Nina & their two children and Ruby. Jack did [page break] not come down. Ruby came this evening. Mother and I gave to the six girls, granddaughters some bloomers and some of the married girls like presents. We gave to 26 Grand children $1.00 each cash & my post card photo. I gave Mother a new gas range which cost $108.00 net & other things. We gave each of the married boys a silk shirt which we got for 3.85 each, except one $4.90.

25 December 1924 • Thursday

Christmas.

Weather extremely cold. Below zero. We had the usual good time. Charles & Edna came from Eugene, Oregon at 6:30 P.M. Charles having finished his course in accounting at the Oregon University on the 18th inst.

Mother, Estella, Ray & I took dinner at Mamie’s. The married people of the family spent the evening at our home. We retired about 2 A.M. Full day of enjoyment.

26 December 1924 • Friday

Still zero weather

I spoke at the funeral services of Martin K. Olsen held in the 18th Ward. Spent some time at the Temple and the remainder of the day at home.

27 December 1924 • Saturday

Spent most of the day at the Temple. My son George has tonsillitis.

28 December 1924 • Sunday

I addressed the High Priests of the [page break] Salt Lake Stake in the 17th ward amusement hall at 10:30 A.M. Attended tabernacle meeting at 2:00 P.M. R. R. Lyman was the Speaker. Attended Sugar House ward sacramental meeting at 6:30 where Orin reported his mission. I offered the benediction.

In our own home I heard over the radio, the L.D.S. religious services from 9:00 to 10:00 P.M. Bro. M. J. Ballard was the Speaker. This has been a full day for me. George is some better. The weather is moderated and a fresh fall of a few inches of snow during the evening.

29 December 1924 • Monday

George is better & about. Others are well. Charles & Edna and Orin & Nina and their children are still with us. Ruby has been sleeping at at Lucena’s & at Mamie’s. We have much snow and crisp weather. Not so cold as it was a few days ago. Usual work.

30 December 1924 • Tuesday

Some rain and thawing weather.

My son George is developing soreness & swelling on the left tonsil. His appendix is also giving him trouble.

I went to the temple as usual, but later, where I spent about five hrs. Spent the evening at home. Geo & family to supper.

31 December 1924 • Wednesday

George is better and went to his [page break] office for a time. I spent part of the day at the Temple with desk work. Spent the evening at home and sat up to see the old year out and the new year in. Enjoyed the radio and by that means heard how other cities celebrate the event, i.e. by dancing & hallowing, yelling, screeching &c. Portland made such a demonstration for about 10 minutes duration.
