Home.

Wintry weather.

Much snow.

Several of the grandchildren are ailing, Delph Card is in perhaps the worst condition. Mother still has bad cold but is feeling better than she has been.

I arose soon after 6 A.M. and made the furnace fire, shaved, bathed and otherwise arranged my toilet and took 7:40 A.M. car for the temple as usual. Had a busy day at the Temple and left for home about 6:30. Made ready and took train for Twin Falls, leaving at 11:30.

2 December 1922 • Saturday

Arrived in Twin Falls at 12:30 P.M. Was met by President of the Twin Falls Stake, L. G. Kirkmon, and taken to his home where I made [page break] my staying place while in T. Falls. The after noon meeting was held in one of the ward houses. I was one of the speakers and occupied 50 minutes with good freedom on the subject of Sacrifice & Testimony. Recited “He Died For His Faith.” In the evening I attended a H.C. meeting and gave instruction. Had an expression from each of the brethren present, 13 in number, on their practice in regard to sustaining authorities, Tithing, W. of W., Secret Orders, Family & Secret prayers, Sabbath Day Observance, attending meetings and filling appointments. A splendid showing was made.

3 December 1922 • Sunday

Twin Falls.

Conference meetings were held in one of the theater buildings. Attendance in forenoon 20% of the Stake Population and in the afternoon 26%. In the former I occupied 40 min. on the subject of Honor Parents, Earthly & Eternal. Which Shall it be; A Mother to Her Son.”; “Which loved best.” Aubo Ben Adhem.

In the afternoon I took about [illegible] minutes, had good liberty, Subj: Investigator; Gospel Defined, First Principles. I did not use Commentary. I took train for home at 6:10 P.M. Mt. time. Pres. Wm F. Jack of Cassia Stake assisted in the conference. The Lord helped me and we had a good time, a good conference. Weather cold. My health good. [page break]

4 December 1922 • Monday

I arrived in S.L. from T. Falls at 9:20 A.M., two hours late, and went directly to the temple where I attended to my duties there as usual.

Sick folks at home some better. I wrote letters to Edna at Eugene, Oregon & to my sister Nerva at Logan.

Attended to business with the First Presidency. Arranged to go to Logan on business tomorrow.

5 December 1922 • Tuesday

I took 8:00 A.M. train for Logan and arrived there at noon. I took with me 12 books of temple ordinances, rules &c for the use of the Logan temple. The Temple President’s Book containing all the Temple ordinances and eleven books of parts written from the Presidents’ books. We have eight such sets of books, one for each of the temples. I brought the old books back with me. Going to Logan I read all the ordinances, ceremonies and rules and while there I read them all to the workers in the temple. These books and their contents represent the work of months of my time and it is, I regard, a splendid accomplishment. All the temple ordinances have been considered and many changes have been made. [page break] More than 100 rules and decisions have been correlated and decided upon for the guidance of Temple presidents and these, some old & many new ones are written in the Presidents Book and all have been approved by the Council of the First Presidency, the Twelve and the Presiding Patriarch.

I saw my brother Fred while I was in Logan.

6 December 1922 • Wednesday

I attended to temple duties as usual. Sealed 27 couples and a number of children to parents. Had a busy day and left the temple at 7:30 after attending my Circle meeting.

7 December 1922 • Thursday

Attended weekly Council meeting in the Temple from 10 to 3:30. Attended to my temple duties, as usual, the morning meeting and sealed 7 couples and some children to parents. Alice & I went through with the evening Co.

8 December 1922 • Friday

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. I set apart nine of our temple workers who have never been set apart but who have been working here for years some of them & some not so long. Yesterday I set apart six of the workers. I moved my effects [page break] from the room 213 in Church offices Building and turned the key to the room and the key to the desk over to President Grant. By request I sat with Prests. Penrose & Ivins and considered some important matters. They turned to me certain letters to answer pertaining to temple work, which I answered.

I wrote to my daughters Ruby and Edna and to Pres. B. S. Young of Portland, Oreg.

9 December 1922 • Saturday

I spent the forenoon & part of the afternoon at the temple and at the President’s office and later went with Alice and Xmas shopping.

10 December 1922 • Sunday

I visited Wm W. Kirk, Henry F. McCune, O. F. Whitney in Forest Dale, my daughter Sarah’s and my son LeGrand’s. Administered to Bro. McCune & Alice R. Cannon and attended 27th ward Sacrament meeting.

11 December 1922 • Monday

I took 6:20 Car for my work at the temple. At 10 A.M. I attended a committee meeting on division of LeGrands ward. President Grant presented me with the small book by N. C. Hanks “Up from The Hills,” and I read it through to-day.

I spent the evening at home, and retired early. [page break]

12 December 1922 • Tuesday

I arose early and took first car, 6:20 A.M., for my work at the temple. I got out a card of instructions for those who come to the temple and had these instructions printed on a card 3 in x 5". These are to be distributed tomorrow to all who come to the Temple.

13 December 1922 • Wednesday

I was at the Temple at 6:35 A.M. The cards of instruction were distributed and a compliance with the rules to check and to not wear street slippers or shoes into the temple was enforced, also to wear only white House-slipper as a substitute for the moccasins. I was speaker

Attended my Circle in evening. LeGrand was released from membership by request. Alice came home from the temple ill. Had a chill, followed by fever. I administered to her. She had a fairly good nights rest.

14 December 1922 • Thursday

I attended Council meeting from 10 until 4 P.M. I sealed six couples. At the Council Meeting to day it was decided to discontinue the baptizing for health and administering to the sick in the temple.

15 December 1922 • Friday

I spent the forenoon at the temple and left on the 1:15 U.P. train for LaGrande, Oregon. I left Mother sick in bed. [page break]

16 December 1922 • Saturday

Arrived in LaGrande, Ore at 1 P.M. Attended 1 P.M. H C. Meeting and 2 P.M. Officers & Priesthood meeting and occupied 60 minutes, Subject, Missionary work and service in the Church. I advised that in future the Stake Conference meetings should not be interfered with by holding monthly P.O. meetings instead.

At the evening service the $750. Painting by Ramsey for $300. “The Angel delivering the plates” was unveiled & I by appointment spoke upon the subject “What the Restoration means to the L.D.S. and the World.[”]

Snow on the ground & very cold. I slept at Pres. Hanks house.

17 December 1922 • Sunday

A large furniture Store in LaGrande burned us this early morning. I attended 9 A.M. and HC & Seventies meeting where Stake Missionary work was considered and steps taken to organize on a more systematic & permanent basis.

At 10 A.M. meeting I occupied 60 minutes. Subjects, Ward teaching and Bearing False Witness.

At 2 P.M., meeting I occupied 60 minutes. Subject. Tale Bearing & and Mormonism. Had good liberty at all meetings.

During Saturday between meetings I ordained & set apart the Bishopric of the Cove ward and during Sunday between meetings I set apart the Bishopric of the LaGrande Ward, a counselor in the Bishopric of Union ward and [page break] some other ordinations. Assisted in setting apart missionaries for stake work.

I took 7:15 P.M. train for Oregon.

18 December 1922 • Monday

Arrived in Portland at 7:30 A.M. Phoned to Mission Headquarters and learned that a special meeting had been called for the evening. I took 8 A.M. train for Eugene, 124 miles South. Arrived at Eugene at 12:45 P.M. and took street car to the Barth Court where I found our daughter Edna & Charles. They gave me a hearty greeting. Both are fleshy & well. I took presents from home and brought back presents from them. They introduced me to a Mrs. Clark and a Mrs. Miers. Charles & Edna went to the depot with me and I took the Limited at 5 P.M. & arrived in Portland at 9 P.M. I was met at station by a Bro. Watkins & a son of Pres. B. S. Young with auto and arrived at chapel at 9:15. I spoke from that time to 10 P.M. Subject, Mormonism. Pres. S B .S. Young was in B. Columbia. I was driven back to Station and got 11 P.M. train for home.

19 December 1922 • Tuesday

On train all day homeward bound.

20 December 1922 • Wednesday

Our train due in Salt Lake at 8:15 A.M. arrived at 12:45 P.M. I went to the temple and spent a couple of hours there and took mail home with me to answer. [page break] I wrote several letters.

Mother whom I left in bed since when I left on the 15th has not been out since but is better.

I attended my Circle meeting in the evening.

21 December 1922 • Thursday

I attended regular Council meeting and attended to the duties of the temple as usual.

Mother & I remained until after the evening session and rode home with our son George.

22 December 1922 • Friday

I attended a U.I.V. Co. Bd Meeting and did some shopping and attended to some regular business of the temple. Set apart Bro. Anderson Heritage & Sister Michaelson as Temple workers. I went Christmas shopping with my wife from 4 to 8 P.M. Went home to supper and Alice & I returned to the temple before the Company of 232 people got through the veil.

23 December 1922 • Saturday

I spent about 6 hours at the temple at my desk, prepared a number of Christmas cards and mailed out. Did Xmas shopping. &c.

24 December 1922 • Sunday

I went to the temple and performed the marriage ceremony making husband and wife Francis Loraine Dupaix and Lucile [page break] Agnes Welch. I attended the 2 P.M. meeting in the Tabernacle and offered the Invocation at opening. The speakers were President Grant on the Life of the Prophet and Pres. Ivins on the life of the Savior.

I attended the 27th eard services in the evening where Alice Reynolds of B.Y.U. spoke upon the life of Christ and the Cantata, “The Shepherds” was rendered. We made the necessary preparations for Christmas, dressing the tree, &c.

I gave to Bro W. W. Kent & family the tree for which I paid $1.50 and bought another for $4.00

25 December 1922 • Monday

This being Christmas morning we arose at 6 A.M. and distributed presents after which we went from house to house in the family and visited briefly. Mamie & Jack and Clarence and Ruby & Jack were with us, over night and to dinner. Nina & children are with us always. All the family came together at about 5 P.M. and a program was rendered by the Grand Children and by request I spoke to them. Many useful presents changed hands and a general good time was experienced by all. [page break]

I spent a part of the day at the Temple and toward evening took Alice & Ruby to a show

27 December 1922 • Wednesday

I spent the day until 5:30 P.M. at the temple, then went down to Mamies where my folks were. We took supper there and spent the evening.

28 December 1922 • Thursday

I attended a committee meeting from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. on division of the LeGrand ward, Liberty stake. I performed the marriage ceremony making Ephriam Young and Iris Clark husband & wife for time & Eternity. Worked at my desk most of the day. Left the temple at about 7 P.M.

29 December 1922 • Friday

I spent about an hour with the Presidency in their office discussing doctrine about which I had received letters, one from C. S. French of Montpelier and another from Lawrence Moore of Ogden. Sec. 132. .26, 41-43 were under discussion also 132:7 and 124:121. Sealing power &c.

In the temple I had the painting of Aunt Bathsheba Smith, Edna L. Smith, Aunt Zina & Sister E. R. Snow moved from the Matrons room into the Brides room off [page break] the women’s wash room; and had other paintings hung in the Matron’s room.

I spent the most of the day in the temple supervising the work being done there, answering correspondence &c, &c. With my wife and family attended the ward show in the evening and after the Show, with Rega Card, administered to Katie Craft.

30 December 1922 • Saturday

I this day redeemed, my note bal. $300 from the Bank. I have been paying interest at the Bank for several years but am not owing them now. I spent the day after 11 A.M. at the Temple, busy & happy. It snowed most of the day. My folks are all pretty well for which blessing I thank the Lord as for his many mercies.

In the evening Alice & I visited Bro. Kent and Sister Craft in their homes and I administered to the former.

31 December 1922 • Sunday

I attended 27th ward Sunday School and spoke to the Parents’ class upon the relation of the Church & its Auxiliaries to the home in the training & teaching of children. I included the State’s responsibility and occupied about 15 min. Attended Tabernacle meeting at 2 P.M. Stephen L. Richards [page break] was the speaker. Attended evening meeting in 27th ward. Melvin J. Ballard was the speaker. We had George & Joel & their families with us to supper at 4:30 and they called in again after meeting. I returned to bed just before midnight and heard the ringing of the old year out and the New Year in.

The year 1922 has withal been a good year for me & mine.

During the year, Mother was called and set apart to assist me in presiding over & in the Salt Lake Temple. Orin Woodbury, my son-in-law went upon a mission to Germany, leaving his wife and two children at home.

Charles & Edna moved to Eugene Oregon where Charles engaged in school work as accountant. I visited them just before Christmas.

My daughter Sarah and my daughter-in-law Ina Ashton Richards each gave birth to a boy.

My daughter Ruby married Jack Hansen and they are living at Cornish, Utah.

We had quite serious illness among the grandchildren particularly but all have recovered.
