Another beautiful day, weather ideal.

I attended my duties at the Temple as usual.

I took 7:20 A.M. train for Nephi. I was met at the depot at 10:30 by Pres. Albert H. Belliston and counselor Thos. H. Burton who took me in Bro. Burton’s new car out onto the 4 mile ridge to see the grain prospects which are excellent. We went to the home of Pres. Belliston where we were met by the other counselor, Samuel E. Paxman and held a meeting of the Presidency for perhaps an hour and a half or two hours.

At the Conference at 2:00 o’clock, the first hour was devoted to Religion Class graduation exercises 35 graduates and I gave a graduation address occupying 35 minutes. After meeting I went for an auto ride with the Stake Presidency up the Left-hand fork of Nephi Canyon 11 miles to a summer resort. In the evening I attended a banquet by the Juab Seminary Lumni Association in the High School building and spoke on that occasion. I slept at Amy Grover’s, her son Roscoe & I occupying the same room.

3 May 1925 • Sunday

Nephi.

Attended Prayer Circle and gave instruction at 9:00 A.M. The 10:00 o’clock session was devoted largely to the graduation exercises of the Seminary Graduates, 14 girls, one boy. I gave an address occupying 40 minutes, Subject: Proper application of the things learned. Learn the Father’s will & do it following the example of the Master and persuade others to do likewise. Let the authorities interpret the will of the Lord. Examples; Word of Wisdom, card playing, secret orders &c. [page break]

At the afternoon meeting I was the concluding speaker and occupied about 40 minutes, Subject: Hope of reward & fear of punishments as incentive; Sin of neglect; history repeats itself; Our neglect of our dead. Now the time, here the place to prepare for the future. Recited “A Little Parable” I made the cross &c.

After meeting I went with the Stake Presidency and their wives to Pres Burton’s home had supper. Amy & Roscoe with us.

I took train at 5:20 P.M. and arrived in Salt Lake at 8:15 P.M. Two or three recently returned missionaries were left to speak in the evening meeting.

4 May 1925 • Monday

I went to the Temple before 8:00 A.M. where I was busily engaged with my desk work & other matters. Attended the funeral services of the 9 yr old son of R. W. Young Jr. in 18th ward chapel.

By request, I got Hugh J. Cannon and Jos. G. Allred and took them to the President’s office where they were interviewed in accordance with the action of the council last Thursday, and it was agreed that Hugh J. Cannon should preside over one of the divisions of the Swiss &German Mission and Bro. Allred would preside over the Eastern division of the Canadian Mission.

In the evening I took my boy Ray to the American & saw Quo Vadis.

5 May 1925 • Tuesday

All well.

Beautiful day, beautiful time of year.

I went to the Temple as usual in the morning and attended to my [page break] duties there as usual. Did some sealing for our own dead to-day. I signed 17 two paged letters I had prepared and had typed, to the 27 Presidents of Stakes & Counselors within the Salt Lake Temple Dist. Giving information and making an appeal for patronage.

In the evening Mother & I rode out with Orin & Nina to Sugar House to see a lot on which they thought to build.

6 May 1925 • Wednesday

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. I set apart Wm Edward Maxwell a Temple worker. Attended 6:30 Prayer Circle meeting & the evening at home. Wrote to Oliver & Ruby.

7 May 1925 • Thursday

I took 7:20 car for my work at the Temple. Was in session with the Presidency & Twelve from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Salt Air proposition considered.

I wrote letters, set apart three missionaries, &c. Left the Temple at 7:10 P.M. Spent the remainder of the evening at home.

8 May 1925 • Friday

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. Spent an hour or two in the President’s office. Considered with the Presidency the Lundy Liddell case. Went home after 6 P.M. Visited and administered to my daughter Nerva, at 634 So., 8th East St. Also visited Sarah & Hugh.

9 May 1925 • Saturday

I left Salt Lake on 7:00 A.M. O.S.L train. Arrived in Dayton [page break] at 11:15 A.M. Was met at depot by Parley M. Condie of the Stake Presidency and taken by auto to the meeting in Dayton where I made the closing talk occupying 30 minutes on the subject of service to others and to the Church, the subject being suggested by what had gone before. I took dinner with Bishop Charles Jones. At the afternoon session of the Oneida Stake conference held at Dayton, I occupied 35 minutes on the subject of “Thy will be done.” After meeting I met with the Stake Presidency for about 1½ hours and offered suggestions, especially a division of responsibility of the Presidency, the High Council and the Bishoprics, and special word for the High Priests & the Seventies by which the quorums may function and the members be active. Bp Jones and family on their way to Logan to see their relatives, took me to Cornish 10 miles south of Dayton where I stayed over night with my daughter Ruby & husband.

10 May 1925 • Sunday

Cornish, Ut.

Jack & Ruby took me to Dayton and Bp Jones & family took me on to Preston where the Onieda Stake Conference was held on Sunday. In the forenoon session I occupied about 45 minutes on the Subject of Motherhood as this is Mothers Day. I took dinner with Bro Condie. Between meetings we held meeting with the Presidents of the 88th and 189th quorums of Seventy.

At the afternoon session, I occupied [page break] about 40 minutes on the Subjects: Genealogical & Temple work, Disappointments to be avoided and [“]History repeats itself.” Had good liberty. At the close of the meeting I met with the two Seventies quorums and later with the High Council.

Took train (Electric) at 4:55 P.M. and arrived in Salt Lake at 9:40 P.M. My son Ray was in bed quite ill. My sons Joel & Orin had just administered to him.

11 May 1925 • Monday

Home. I arose early and went to the Temple as usual. In the afternoon I went shopping with Edna & Estella. Estella bought a solid gold watch, Swiss make, 17 jewels for $27.00 to give to Mother on her birthday May 11. I bought a stand lamp for her and paid $22.50 for it.

Mother & I called on Charles & Edna in their new home in the Buckingham Apartments on So. Temple in the evening.

12 May 1925 • Tuesday

Mother & I went to the Temple in the morning as usual.

I set apart two sister workers and attended to other special ordinance work besides the regular sealings &c. I wrote a two page letter to Oliver to go along with Mother & Estella’s.

13 May 1925 • Wednesday

Mother & I went to the Temple as usual where we spent the day in busy work. Leaving for home after [page break] eight o’clock. I spent the evening at home.

14 May 1925 • Thursday

Much rain. This is Alice’s 61st birth-day anniversary. Estella presented her with a $30 Gold wrist watch, Nina gave her a band for the wrist to hold the watch in place. I bought a Stand lamp for her, cost $22. She received various other remembrances. I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual and attended regular weekly council meeting. Members of my family came in and spent the evening in honor of Mothers birth day.

15 May 1925 • Friday

I went to the Temple as usual before 8:00 A.M. I took street car & went down to 1145 So., 9th East St. and saw Pres. Charles W. Penrose who is in a dieing condition. His family folks were gathered & a son Leo? and I laid our hands upon Pres. Penrose’s head and I gave him a blessing and dedicated him to the Lord and prayed that he might go in peace and soon. I also gave to Sister Penrose a blessing. I took the 10:40 P.M. train for Bancroft, Idaho. Changed trains at McCammon at 3:00 A.M. Arrived in Bancroft 4:40 A.M.

16 May 1925 • Saturday

Arrived at 4:40 and was met by Bro Keplar Sessions of the Stake Presidency and taken to his home where I was given a bed & room and retired getting [page break] more than two hours sleep.

Conference opened at 10:00 o’clock. I occupied 35 minutes with good liberty upon the Subject of The necessity of works with faith. The song “Though in the outward Church below” was sung. I read it transposing it into the first person and made that my text.

At the noon hour I met with the Stake Presidency for about 1½ hrs. At the 2 P.M. meeting I had thought to speak after Thomas Redford who began at 3:15 and close at 4:05 thus cutting me out. After meeting I went to the home of Bro Sessions and wrote up my journal, did some studying before the evening meeting which consisted of Religion Class graduation exercises. They had me listed to make a graduation address. I filled my part on the program.

17 May 1925 • Sunday

Bancroft, Ida.

Am well & happy.

I attended the 10:00 A.M. Conference meeting and was one of the speakers, occupying about 45 minutes on the subject of the order and discipline of the church, how to pray, &c. Had good liberty and my remarks were well received. Between meetings I set apart two High Councilors and two counselors to Bishops. At the afternoon meeting I occupied about 50 minutes with good liberty. Subjects considered. What I most need. As incentive, hope of reward and fear of punishment; The law of the land, the Church & the gospel, i.e. my religion. Our standards. The gospel a perfect law of life but man is falable. Do not judge our religion by our actions &c. [page break] I had splendid liberty. The Lord helped me. May his name be praised.

I took train at 4:25 P.M. for Cornish arriving there at 7:08 P.M. I was met at the station by Orin & family land Mother & Ruby. We went to Ruby’s home and got Jack and went to meeting at 7:30. Orin and I were the speakers. We each occupied about 30 min. Orin spoke of his experiences and conditions in Germany. I spoke of the necessity for our doing as well as we know. We are well taught and our knowledge is sufficient to either save or condemn us. Incentives &c. I had good liberty & attention. After meeting we visited until after 11 o’clock. On my return from Bancroft when I reached McCammon I bought the morning Salt Lake Tribune and there learned that President Charles W. Penrose had passed away the evening before between 9: and 10: o’clock. He has been confined to his room and bed for about eight months.

18 May 1925 • Monday

Cornish, Utah.

All well.

A beautiful day after a splendid soaking rain of several days.

I arose at 6:00 A.M. and after making my toilet I wrote up my journal from Sunday, made out my reporting card &c. Spent a pleasant forenoon visiting and reading and after dinner started home. We made a number of calls, Orin calling on two friends and arrived home about 10 o’clock.

19 May 1925 • Tuesday

I took 7:00 A.M. car for my work [page break] at the Temple where I spent most of the day until after 6: P.M. Attended Directors meeting of the U.I.V. Co. Spent the evening at home.

20 May 1925 • Wednesday

Mother & I went to the Temple as usual in the morning.

Attended the funeral services and burial of Pres. Penrose’s remains. I was one of the pall bearers and offered the benediction. Pres. Clawson offered the opening prayer and Jos. Fielding Smith the prayer at the grave. The speakers in order as follows: Franklin S. Richards, Pres. A. W. Ivins & Pres. Grant. The Large Tabernacle was nearly filled, both the auditorium and the gallery. In the evening I attended my Circle meeting and later Mother & I attended a Scout Court of Honor meeting held in the 27th ward house where our son Ray received five or six merit badges. He had the most points of credit of all the boys in troop 39.

21 May 1925 • Thursday

Mother & I went to the Temple as usual in the morning.

I attended weekly Council meeting of the Twelve from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Assisted in setting apart a company of missionaries and instructing them, and presided at the meeting. Called on my daughter Nerva at 634 So. 8th East. She is up and about & feeling better. Left the Temple after 8:00 o’clock and spent the remainder of the evening at home. [page break]

22 May 1925 • Friday

I went to the Temple in the morning as usual. Attended to the Temple work at took 10:40 train for American Falls, thence to go by Auto to Woodland of Pocatello Stake.

23 May 1925 • Saturday

Arrived in Pocatello in the early morn. At 7:45 Pres. Noah S. Pond called for me and I went with him and Bro. & Sis. Francis in the latter’s car to Wood Rockland, 40 miles distant to Conference of the Pocatello Stake arriving at 9:30 A.M.

At the first meeting I occupied 30 min. on prayer & speaking, discipline & order of doing things &c. Des. News.

At the afternoon meeting I occupied about 40 minutes, Subject: Thy will be done; Read from D&C 58. Slothful servant, he who has to be commanded in all things &c.

After meeting I met the Stake Presidency in meeting and outlined for them the work expected of the Presidency & the High Council. I ate luncheon served by one of the authorities and ate supper at Bro Fifield’s and stayed at the home of Bro. Mark B. Walker at night. A Bro. Allen took Bros Hyde & Pond & me for a ride about the homes about 20 miles ride.

24 May 1925 • Sunday

Rockland, Ida.

Attended and spoke at both forenoon and afternoon meetings. In former, I occupied 45 mins. Subject: Experience is a dear school We should profit by our own experience and by that of other people. Hist. repeats itself. Are we wiser than the outsiders? Are we not equally guilty of being hearers only? &c.

At afternoon meeting I occupied 35 min. [page break] Subject: Men are that they may have joy. I desire to point the way to happiness. Peace through a clear conscience, and through unselfish service. Prepare here for the life beyond. Hear Moses & the Prophets. &c

I ordained one bishop, four Counselors to Bishops and set apart one Alternate high councilor. At the close of the Conference I rode to Pocatello with a Bro. Barlow and with him went to the First Ward meeting and on invitation of Bp. M. A. Pond I took the time, about 50 minites on the subject of Marriage &c. Had good liberty. After meeting I went home with the Bishop & had lunch, thence, went to the Hospital where we administered to to Thos. B. Smith. From there I went to the depot and went aboard my sleeper which left on train at 1:15 A.M. This has been a strenuous day.

25 May 1925 • Monday

Arrived in Salt Lake from the Pocatello Stake at 7:00 A.M. I went home to breakfast and there to the Temple where I spent a busy day, principally at my desk. Nerva & George & members of their family took supper and spent the evening with us.

26 May 1925 • Tuesday

Stormy evening.

Mother & I went to the Temple in the morning as usual. I had a busy day and did many sealings, both living and dead. Mother and I left the Temple about 7:30 or 8: o’clock and called on Edna & Charles in the Buckingham Apartments, So. Temple St. where we spent the evening until 9:40. All well. [page break]

27 May 1925 • Wednesday

Mother & I went to the Temple in the morning as usual. Our Son George was the speaker at the Temple meeting. I sealed 19 couples and 47 children at one sitting and later 1 couple & 4 children. I set apart Mary Smaley Ness a Temple worker.

28 May 1925 • Thursday

I presided at the Temple meeting as usual in the morning. Attended weekly Council meeting of the Presidency and the Twelve held in the Temple as usual from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Attended to the living sealings as usual. At the meeting of the Council, President Heber J. Grant nominated Anthony W. Ivins for his first Counselor and Charles W. Nibley as his second Counselor and they were sustained by unanimous vote and Pres. Grant set them apart all the others of us laying on hands. There were absentees, viz. J. E. Talmage in Europe; Geo Albert Smith and Orson F. Whitney. I met with Browning, Irving & Murray at Irvines office for 1½ hrs on U.I.V. Co. business.

In the evening I accompanied Pres. Rudger Clawson to the First ward meeting house in the Liberty Stake where a Stake Priesthood meeting was session. Pres. Hugh J. Cannon and his counselors were honorably released and Bryant S. Hinckley was chosen, set apart and sustained as president of the Liberty Stake and Frederick M. Michelson was set apart first Counselor. These three men, Pres. Clawson & I were the [page break] Speakers. Pres. Clawson occupied 42 minutes. I occupied about 15 minutes with good liberty. I set apart Brother Fred. M. Michelson. Joel called at our home and got me and we drove to the Temple after 10:00 o’clock and got mother and rode down by the park. Retired late.

29 May 1925 • Friday

Presided at the 8:30 Temple meeting as usual. Attended to the sealing of the living as usual. Had a conversation over the phone with Pres. Grant about UIV. Co. & MDW. &c Had an interview with the First Presidency in their office. Spent the day until after 8:00 P.M. in the Temple.

30 May 1925 • Saturday

‘Decoration Day’

Mother & I went with my son George and family to Tooele, leaving Salt Lake about 8:30 A.M. We decorated our graves, witnessed the exercises, went up Middle Canyon and had luncheon on the ground.

Called on Abram & Polly and returned home via Salt Air. When about eight miles from the City the axle on the left side to the rear broke shot off. No harm to the passengers. I got a ride to Town and phoned Mr Higbe of Taylor Motor Co. who went out with wrecking wheel &c and brought in the car. Clarence went out and brought in the children, Mother & Edith having got a chance ride to Town. I took 7:15 P.M. train for Cedar City. J A Widstoe accompanying [page break]

Cedar City.

Bro. Widtsoe & I arrived at 7:00 A.M. We went to Escalante Hotel for breakfast. Met Pres. Lunt & Counselor Wm R. Palmer at Stake office at 8:0 A.M. where we were in Council until 10:00 A.M. during which time we decided on the new Stake Presidency as follows: Wm R. Palmer, Thomas J. Jones and Arthur Root Fifer. At the 10:00 A.M. meeting of Conference I was last six speakers and occupied 30 min. About 50 percent of the Congregation was made up of children. I addressed them on the Subject of the Future ministry of the Church. At the close of the meeting we met the High Council members and presented our business.

At the 2:00 P.M. meeting I presented the General Authorities and the New Stake Presidency after releasing the old members. All voting was in the affirmative. I was the last speaker occupying 20 min. Subjects, the Des News Sub. & Seminary Work. After the Conference we met the new Stake Presidency and set them apart and instructed them. We were in session with them about two hours. We took dinner and supper at the home of Pres. Palmer.

We took 8:00 P.M. train for home. This has been a strenuous day and a good work has been accomplished.
