Mother & I went to the temple in the morning where, by appointment we were met by Elder J. F. S. & Bp. J. C. and mother being proxy I had anointed to me.
I arose from my bed at 5:45 A.M. and went to work on my books and fixed up for my tithing in full. With my wife and unmarried children I took dinner at Geo & Edith’s. & spent the evening there.
We are having much snow and genuine seasonable weather.
2 January 1923 • Tuesday
I attended quarterly meeting of the Twelve in the Temple from 9 A.M. to 6:15 P.M. with about 30 minutes for luncheon. Spent the evening at home.
3 January 1923 • Wednesday
I took 7:20 A.M. car for my work at the Temple and had a busy day. I sealed twenty four couples living and some children to parents. Had a busy day. [39 words redacted relating to a temple ceremony] He took his part exceedingly well.
I made the talk in our Temple meeting this morning.
Attended my Circle meeting in the evening. A good full day. [page break]
I wrote to my Son-in-law, Orin in Germany.
4 January 1923 • Thursday
I took 7 A.M. car for my work at the Temple.
I sealed about twelve couples and a number of children living. I attended the Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. except while at lunch and while attending to the sealing. I left the temple about 10:30 P.M.
5 January 1923 • Friday
I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. I left the Temple about 4:20 o’clock and went down to my daughter Sarah’s home and assisted by her husband administered to her and the baby. The latter is very sick with Erysipelos. Three doctors were present while I was there. I was gone from the Temple about two hours. It was my intention to go through with the evening session but there was not room. The seating capacity is 300 and a number were unable to go through. Mother, Clarence and Mamie went through. 6 January 1923 • Saturday
I spent the day at the temple mostly at my desk. In the evening my son George Mother & I went down to see Sarah’s sick baby. Hugh, Geo. & I administered to him. He is badly afflicted with Erysipelos.
7 January 1923 • Sunday
I attended 27th ward S. School and sacrament meeting and the evening meeting at which Dr. Winship was the speaker. Clarence & Mamie & children called and Clarence went to Church with me. A busy day with a regular January thaw on.
8 January 1923 • Monday
I spent the day in the temple and in the evening at home. I wrote to Ruby at Cornish and to Edna at Eugene. A beautiful spring day. Sarah’s baby boy has been in a dangerous condition with Erysipelas. He seems some better to-day. All other members of the family seem to be pretty well.
The Utah State Legislature convened in regular sessions to-day for its opening session. Nina and her two children are staying with us [page break] while Orin is filling a mission in Germany.
Alice Lee has been tending the children four days each week at our home while Nina has been at work in LeGrand’s office and while mother has been working in the Temple.
9 January 1923 • Tuesday
Our phone bell rang at about 5 A.M. Mother answered it. It was Hugh J. announcing the death of Sarah’s baby Donald Hugo. He passed away about 4 or 4:30 A.M. Hugh sent his car up by Mr. Marshall and Mother & I went down. I stayed about 2½ hrs. and when Sarah thought she might get some sleep I left and went to the Temple where my work called me. Sarah feels keenly the death of her sweet baby. He was one of the most beautiful babies, from birth, that I have ever seen.
I wrote last evening to my daughters Nerva in Inkom, Idaho; Edna in Eugene Oregon and to Ruby in Cornish, Utah. I have written each of them again to-day.
I assisted in setting apart a company of missionaries and presided at the meeting.
I spent several hours again in the evening with my daughter Sarah, and with Hugh blessed her. [page break]
10 January 1923 • Wednesday
I went to the temple as usual in the morning and as usual I presided at the morning meeting. I sealed 15 living couples and some children to parents.
Spent the evening with my daughter for her comfort.
11 January 1923 • Thursday
I went to the temple as usual and presided at the meeting at which the Patriarch was the speaker. Attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Attended to my regular temple duties and spent the evening at my daughter Sarah’s.
12 January 1923 Friday
This day we laid away the body of our little grandson Donald Hugo Cannon. Services were held at the home. I did my usual work in the Temple and remained until the evening session was through. A great many people were disappointed who could not get names because we were full up. I prepared a letter to the First Presidency recommending the establishing of a Wednesday evening session of endowments which would make three evening sessions each week. The patronage at these evening sessions seems to justify if not demand such action.

I called on the Presidency in the forenoon and laid before them, Prests. Grant & Ivins, the necessity for having Wednesday evening sessions of endowments as well as Thu. and Friday evenings and they readily approved the recommendation. I told them that I thought we would be able to begin on the 24th inst.
The brethren of the Presidency requested me to remain with them while they considered some important questions & matters which I did until they took a recess at about 1 p.m. The President thanked me on leaving and remarked that he thought it would be well to call in one of the brethren to sit with the Presidency when the brethren are at liberty. I told him I would be pleased when not occupied with my sealing or his important temple work to come in and sit with them. The President said in answer that there are others of the brethren who have not so much to do and that I have a big work at the Temple and said he, “You are doing it well. I congratulate you.” I thanked him and felt thankful for the compliment & to know that my labors are approved by him.
While at the office Pres. Ivins & I took the New Books for the St. George Temple into Bro Carl A. Carlson & had him wrap them [page break] and authorized him to express them to David H. Cannon of St. George.
Pres. Ivins asked me to be the speaker at the Tabernacle next Sunday which I assented to. I spent the afternoon in the temple at my desk and the evening at home. My daughter Sarah and family took supper with us and spent the early evening there.
14 January 1923 • Sunday
I was the speaker at the Large Tabernacle at 2 P.M. meeting. President A. W. Ivins presided.
I occupied 60 minutes with good freedom & liberty of thought & expression. My remarks were principally from the topics, ‘History Repeats Itself,” Faith & Works. What works. First Principles. I was the speaker in the 24th ward in the evening, Topics Sacrament Atonement. Thy Will Be Done.
I spent several hours in the Temple praying & studying.
15 January 1923 • Monday
We had a large company of girls from Weber Stake who came to do baptismal work for the dead. We held special meeting with them and I addressed the meeting.
I attended to important business at the Temple and with Pres. Ivins who represented the First Presidency.

16 January 1923 • Tuesday
I attended to my duties as usual at the Temple. Assisted in setting apart a large company of missionaries. Visited the Salt Lake County Hospital and administered to three women including Sister Clara Gundy who is to have a surgical operation tomorrow.
17 January 1923 • Wednesday
Attended and presided at the 8:30 Temple meeting.
Spoke at the funeral services of Sister John Lawrence in LeGrand Ward. Attended my Circle meeting in the evening.
I formulated a letter to Messrs. Payne & Greenhalgh, a proposal of Terms or rental of our Arizona land.
I met with Dan Livingston, Wm T. Atkin and my three sons George, LeGrand & Joel and considered a proposition made me and my three sons by Wm. Atkin which involved an investment of $2500.
18 January 1923 • Thursday
I presided at the 8:30 Temple meeting. Attended weekly Council meeting from 10 to 1 P.M. Attended to the sealing of living couples and attended to other Temple duties.
I borrowed from Utah State National Bank $1850.00 and loaned $1250 of it to George & [page break] LeGrand and they, Joel and I put up $625.00 each and bought a one fourth interest in an oil lease on 960 A of land in Montana. We each gave to our wives $125.00 interest in the lease. This land cost approximately $10,000. or 10.00 per A.
I remained at the Temple until the close of the evening session. We had 300 in the first and last sessions and many did not get to get through.
19 January 1923 • Friday
I was at the temple as usual until about 2:30 P.M. when I went home to get my grip &c. And took 4:00 P.M. Electric train for Hyrum, Cache Co. where I was met by John A. Israelson of the Hyrum Stake Presidency and taken to his home where I made my headquarters while attending the conference.
20 January 1923 • Saturday
Hyrum, Utah.
Am well.
Beautiful day.
I occupied the 35 min allowed me for the topics assigned with good freedom. There were at the 9:30 A.M. meeting 466 members of the Priesthood or 30% of the Stake Priesthood & 9 % of the Stake membership. The 10:30 meetings of the different divisions of the priesthood was also a success.
At the general meeting at 2 P.M. the attendance was 779 or 15% of the Stake membership. I occupied [page break] 45 minutes Subj: Temple work evidences of growth in the Lord’s work. Bps. duties in recommending. Judges of the people &c.
In the evening I attended a Basket Ball game.
21 January 1923 • Sunday
Hyrum, Utah.
At the morning session of the conference the attendance was 961 or 19%. I occupied 60 min. Subject. Sacrafice & Salvation. The eternal progress of man &c. At the afternoon session there were present, many standing 1286 or 25%. I occupied 60 minutes. Subject. Instructions to Bishops. Instruct the young people in particular as to the qualifications that are necessary to be recommended to the Temples and to be advanced in the Priesthood. How to vitalize the quorum and members. By giving them something to do. What a Deacon, a Teacher, a Priest, an Elder may do to magnify his Priesthood. D&C 84:33–40 Who is responsible if the brethren do not magnify the Priesthood?
After meeting I took 4:10 train for home arriving safely on time. The conference was a success. Praise the Lord.

Sarah & Hugh took supper with us and spent the early part of the evening with us. During the evening we had callers as follows: Estella & Hyrum, LeGrand & Ina, Rega & Lucena, George & Joel. We retired late after a very pleasant evening.
23 January 1923 • Tuesday
I spent the day at the temple until 6:45 P.M. When I left and with mother went down to the County Hospital where I administered to six of the inmates or patients including Sister Clara Grundy. Later we called on Sister Kent whose husband is in the L.D.S. Hospital and is not expected by the doctors to live through his illness.
24 January 1923 • Wednesday
Stormy.
I was in the Temple before 7 A.M., attending to my work as usual and did not leave the Temple until after the evening session.
Today, I sealed 19 Couples of living and 16 children; also 15 couples of dead and some dead children. Retired to my bed at 11:45 P.M.
25 January 1923 • Thursday
Stormy.
I arose at 6 A.M. and after attending to the furnace, shaving &c. went to the temple leaving on the 7:20 car.
Presided as usual at the [page break] 8:30 A.M. Temple meeting and attended regular Council meeting from 10 A.M. to about 3 P.M.
Attended to the Sealing also. I presented to the Presidency the matter of advance in salary of four of the recorders for extra time by reason of evening sessions of $25.00 each per month. Allowed. Also our six typists allowed $10.00 each per month increase and Mary Young $10.00. Left the temple after the evening session got through.
26 January 1923 • Friday
I went to the Temple as usual. Attended to my duties there until 4:30 when I left for the train O.S.L. 5:15 which I took in company with R.S. Wells for Evanston, arriving there at 9:30. We were met by Bro. John Nielsen and taken to his home where we made our staying place.
27 January 1923 • Saturday
Evanston.
Am well.
Weather cold.
I spoke at the 9:30 Priesthood Convention occupying 25 min. Topic, “Ward Teaching.” 11% of priesthood present. At 10:30 department work. I attended the H. Priests department and occupied the concluding 20 min. At 2:00 P.M. meeting I occupied about 60 min. Subject the vitalization of the Priesthood quorums & members and how to obtain an efficient ministry for home & foreign [page break] missionary and church work. Showed what work can be done by Deacons, Teachers, Priests & Elders by which they may magnify the Priesthood they bear. I left a copy of the latter listed with the Stake President.
Attended a special meeting of the H. Council called at my request and had all present commit themselves to seven leading questions and discovered that five or six present were using either tea or coffee. I made a talk to them on that subject. In the evening I attended a free social given for the benefits of Conference visitors.
28 January 1923 • Sunday
Evanston.
Am well. Weather cold.
Attended Conference meetings at 10 A.M. & 1:00 P.M. At morning meeting I occupied 35 Min. Subject. Honor Parents, earthly and Heavenly. In the afternoon I was first speaker and occupied 35 minutes. Subject. Thy Will be done. Christ’s sufferings. Cause &c. I got train at 2:35 out of Evanston and arrived in Salt Lake about 6:20 P.M. Spent the evening with my folks at home.
29 January 1923 • Monday
I spent the day at the temple as usual.
Mother is poorly. I got some [page break] new medicines for her. It is to be hoped that she will be benefitted therefrom.
To-day I obtained the approval of the Presidency to keep clean the white suits worn in the temple at the expense of the temple. There will be about 65 or 70 I judge.
In the evening Mother & I went to the Pan. with Clarence & Mamie.
30 January 1923 • Tuesday
In the forenoon I sealed 49 couples, dead. This required but one hour, thirty-five minutes including rests for the proxies, Jas. H. and Emily J. C.Moulton.
I attended and presided at H.J.G. VC Stock Holder’s Meeting. Spent the evening at home.
31 January 1923 • Wednesday
Attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. Sealed fourteen couples. My son was the Speaker (Joel) at the morning Temple meeting. The evening session of endowments was light on account of the stormy cold night. All were through the veil at 9:30.
