I went to the temple in the morning as usual

In my remarks at Provo yesterday afternoon, I stated that no man can attain to a fullness of glory in the Celestial Kingdom without holding the Melchisedek Priesthood or without having a wife given him of God through the Holy Priesthood, neither could a woman attain to that degree of glory without a husband who holds that priesthood.

I spent this day in the temple and the evening at home.

2 August 1921 • Tuesday

I spent the day at the temple and in the evening I took Mother to the American. Had an extention phone put in my room in the temple to-day.

3 August 1921 • Wednesday

Mother, George and I met the U.P. train at 8:30 A.M. on which were Pres. Heber J. Grant, Pres. Geo Albert Smith & family and Miss Maud Smith and we greeted them. Elder Geo Albert Smith relieved me of my presidency over the European Mission July 1, 1919. He is looking well [page break] I solemnized the marriage of a Bro. Beardshall and a Sister Love in the temple. Attended to duties at the temple as usual. In the evening I went out to Salt Air where Alice and other members of the family were and there met many Tooele people they having an excursion on.

4 August 1921 • Thursday

I attended council meeting from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. At this meeting it was decided to let Leo Fairbanks have the job of painting the world room walls which we have just now had replastered, as soon as the walls are fit i.e. dry enough.

I am to get expert opinions or testimony on this point. Bro. Fairbanks bids $3,000.00 on the painting. The former designe of which we have photographs, is to be reproduced.

The matter of painting on canvass was considered. The extra cost would be $990.00 It was decided to not use the canvass. I went out to Saltair where my folks were in the evening.

5 August 1921 • Friday

I spent a busy day at the temple directing the work. In counsel with the Presidency it was decided to not paint the walls of the world room at present though by the test made the walls seem to be perfectly dry.

I cut our lawn & did other work &c. [illegible] [page break]

6 August 1921 • Saturday

I left home for Coalville at 6:30 A.M. with Geo. D. Pyper in his car, Bro. Jos. J. Cannon accompanying. We went via Parley’s Canyon and had a most pleasant ride, arriving at Coalville at 9:10 A.M. I attended convention and conference meetings as per program. Held special meeting with Presidency, High Council and Bishops and obtained from them a written expression of their preference for Stake president. I canvassed the returns. Called in Bros. Pyper and Cannon for consultation. I also consulted Prests. Allen & Young. Finally I decided to nominate Pres. Thos. L. Allen. He was consulted and chose for his counselors Ralph W. Maxwell and John W. Lamb. These were sustained the following day.

7 August 1921 • Sunday

I took part in the regular conference and convention meetings speaking at both morning and afternoon meetings on the topics named. Attended also special meetings of the High Council and a Stake Priesthood meeting. I set apart the officers, the three in Presidency, some High councilmen &c.

While in Coalville I was the guest of Pres. Thos. L Allen and family where I was made comfortable and feasted. Before leaving Coalville I took supper with a Brother & Sister Jones, a delicious repast.

We arrived home about 8 P.M. Found all usually well. [page break]

Mamie & Clarence and Ruby & Bro Hansen returned today from a weeks’ outing in Idaho. Edna & Charles returned from their wedding tour today.

8 August 1921 • Monday

I went to the temple early as usual and put in the day directing the work, at my desk &c.

In the evening Mother and I took Geo. & Edith to the Paramount Empress, a good show. Mamie & Clarence called in the early evening. Weather warm. All well.

This mornings paper announces a fire this early morning in the western part of the City which destroyed about $150,000.00 worth of Salt Air Co., rolling stock, barn &c. As Joel is General Manager of the Co. I am considerably disturbed.

9 August 1921 • Tuesday

I was at the temple all day.

In the evening Mother and I took Rega & Lucena to the Pantages.

It was Lucena’s 28th birth day anniversary.

10 August 1921 • Wednesday

I went to the temple as usual.

Went with Sister Edna L. Smith to Z.C.M.I. and to Co-op furniture and to the White House Furniture Co, and at the latter bought portiers for door ways in temple. I attended to business with the Inland Railway Company and became one fifth owner, ostensively, in the company by [page break] giving my note of $1800.00 @ 6% int. to the Company and receiving from them 20 shares of $100.00 each of stock in the company. I indorsed the stock certificate and left it with the Company Sec’y.

I received my first payment of $10.00 director’s fee for attending a director’s meeting to-day. Future meetings to be monthly at 10:30 A.M. In the evening I went to Saltair with Joel & family in their car, Mother and others of the family had gone out earlier in the day.

11 August 1921 • Thursday

Attended regular weekly council meeting in the temple as usual from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.

Attended to the affairs at the temple

In the evening I went down to Sugar House and took supper with Mamie & Clarance, Mother, Ruby & Bro Hansen were among the guests.

12 August 1921 • Friday

I went with other temple workers to Huntsville for an outing as the guests of the people of the Huntsville Ward in particular & the Ogden Stake in General. Prests. Grant & Clawson & Elders Geo. A. Smith, Jos. F. Smith Jr., Richard R Lyman, Hyrum G Smith, Seymour B. Young and Andrew Jensen and I of the General Authorities were present and spoke at a meeting held in Huntsville Ward house. We went by automobiles. Mother & I rode with LeGrand & Ina. Geo. & Edith took their cars [page break] and John Hansen and Ruby went with his car and took others of our workers.

13 August 1921 • Saturday

I attended the Jordan Stake Conference held in Sandy and spoke at both sessions, subjects treated; Individual responsibility to obey all laws and ordinances and responsibility to work of others. &c.

I returned home for the night. I ordained and set apart two Bishoprics. Rained hard.

14 August 1921 • Sunday

I attended Jordan Stake Conference held in Sandy Amusement hall and spoke at the morning meeting on “Honor Father & mother & God.[”] In the afternoon I occupied an hour on missionary work. Investigators. Pre-existance as a fundimental of the Gospel. First Principles as fundamental to conversion. Christs’ divinity. I quoted. “Thou art Christ the Son of the Living God. (Not a son) and The only Begotten of the Father.[”] Jn 4:9; Jn 1:14

I returned home and attended and spoke at the 27th Ward meeting.

15 August 1921 • Monday

I went to the temple as usual and spent the day there. The temple opened for baptismal work as per announcement made at time of closing Friday, July 1st. I waited upon [page break] several visitors, answered letters &c. In the evening I went to the American Theatre with Mother, George & Joel & their wives.

16 August 1921 • Tuesday

I went to the temple as usual At the 9 A.M. meeting Jos. F. Smith Jr was the speaker. I attended a D.&C. Committee meeting of 1½ hrs duration. Spent the remainder of the day at the temple. Several people came to ask questions. I attended to correspondence as usual.

Spent the evening at home.

17 August 1921 • Wednesday

I presided at the temple meeting as usual and made the opening talk. Attended to other regular duties of the temple, included in which was the solemnization of a number of marriages & one of them was the marriage of Rulon Clark, my Sister Wealthys son & his wife &c.

18 August 1921 • Thursday

Attended weekly council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.

I attended to temple sealing and other temple work until 5 P.M. Then I went home to supper and after supper, Mother, my sister Nerva & I went to Saltair with George & LeGrand where we met theirs & Joels families and had a good visit.

We arrived home at a late hour. All our folks are pretty well. I am happy in my work. [page break]

19 August 1921 • Friday

I presided at the Salt Lake Temple meeting at 9 A.M. as usual.

Attended to the sealings for the living and other temple work. I met Pres. Heber J. Grant at my office and we considered two important matters. My daughter Sarah also met me at my office by appointment. Pres. Seymour B. Young & I set apart a Brother Beecher and a sister Robbins who are about to leave for a mission to the Hawaii to teach school ostensibly but who were set apart as missionaries.

I instructed them to not be seen together in a berth room without an attendant. I reported the case to President Grant who said he thought they ought not to be sent together unaccompanied.

I took train at 10:30 for Teton Stake

20 August 1921 • Saturday

I arrived in Driggs, Idaho at 1:45 P.M. Attended the afternoon sessions of the Conference and conjoined conventions, and took part. I spoke at the 2 P.M. general assembly.

Attended a social held on the grass in the evening.

21 August 1921 • Sunday

A busy day. I spoke at the morning & afternoon meetings. In the afternoon I spoke upon the best methods of vitalizing quorums and quorum members also upon the Word of Wisdom. I took train [page break] at 3:30 and arrived home next morning at 7:15.

22 August 1921 • Monday

I went to the L.D.S. Hospital and assisted by my son George & his brother I administered to Wm F. Rawson who has just undergone an operation for gland trouble. Attended to business at the temple. My son Joel & I met with Geo & LeGrand and talked over a proposition of purchase made by Gardner Bros. for our land & water in Ashurst Arizona. In the evening George, Joel & I and our wives went to the New Pantages show. After the show we had ice cream and an auto ride.

23 August 1921 • Tuesday

I presided at the temple meeting. I set apart Frank Pocock a regular temple worker. In the evening I went to Saltair with some of my family members.

24 August 1921 • Wednesday

I sealed thirty odd couples and a number of families of children.

Was busy all day. Attended M.I.A. Bd. meeting.

25 August 1921 • Thursday

Home.

All well.

I presided as usual at the temple meeting. Made ready and left Salt Lake on 10:30 D & R.G. Ry for the Garfield Stake, accompanied by the following auxiliary workers; Lillian Cameron of the R.S.; Agnes S. Campbell of the Y.L.; Mary R. Jack of the Primaries; R. S. Wells of the Y.M. [page break]

We were met at Marysvale by the Stake President, Charles E. Rowan Jr., and others and went on our way by Ford Auto to Junction where I stayed over night sleeping at the Bishops’.

26 August 1921 • Friday

I went with others from Junction to Escalante. The rains and floods caused us delay and labor. We had to push the Fords over the divide and had mud trouble on the other side of the divide. We were assisted by people & teams from Esclante. A flood and hail storm did much damage in Escalante this day. At Coyote or Marion, or Antimona as it is severally called I ordained Heber Samuel Gleaves an High Priest and set him apart 2nd counselor in the Bishopric of Marion Ward. We arrived at Escalante about 9 P.M. I stayed at the home of Bishop E. A. Griffin.

27 August 1921 • Saturday

Escalante.

Am well.

Garfield Stake

I attended to the Convention and Conference meetings and took care of the Religion Class work. Took steps to divide the Escalante ward of 1100 pop., attended a social & dance for a short time and by request made remarks. A busy, busy day.

28 August 1921 • Sunday

Escalante

Am well.

I continued convention & conference [page break] work and effected a division of the Escalante ward and assisted by the Stake Presidency set apart the officers of both wards. I ordained Bp. Ernest A. Griffin a Patriarch and ordained Bishops George and Twitchell & their counselors and others. A busy busy day, but successful withall.

29 August 1921 • Monday

Escalante.

Am well.

I left Escalante at 9 A.M. with others of our party and went via Brice’s Canyon & Panguitch to Junction arriving there at 12:30 mid night. The Brices Canyon is a wonderful freak of nature. I have seen the Grand Canyon of the Colorado & the Zions Canyon but this beats them all.

30 August 1921 • Tuesday

I came from Junction home leaving at 6 A.M. & arriving at 9 A.M. Floods hindered our progress. I administered to Pres. Rowan & his wife and to a Sister Lee, the latter on the car. I blessed one baby and administered to several people while away.

31 August 1921 • Wednesday

I attended to temple duties as usual. A busy day.

Attended a meeting of the Y.M.M. Bd. and later Mother & I went to the wedding reception of Grant Steed at the Ure home 17th So. & East.
