Salt Lake City, Utah.

I attended the 27th Ward Priesthood Sunday School from 10: to 12: Noon and addressed the class comprising those of the High Priesthood and the [illegible] Parents. This is the inauguration of the New order of things as pertaining to the Sunday Schools and Priesthood class study of the Church. I attended 27th Ward meeting & in the evening I heard S.L. Richard’s Radio Address. Mother, Ray and I took dinner with Oliver & Marie & later visited at Nerva’s, Edna having come down from Ogden and having gone down to Inas. Edna stayed at our home at night.

The weather, which for several weeks has been cold with much snow, seems to have broken as a thaw has set in and some rain fell towards evening.

2 January 1928 • Monday

I went to the Temple right after breakfast and worked at my desk during the forenoon. The afternoon was Spent at home and in the evening, Mother & I went to the American and saw Les Miserables, Victor Hugo’s famous novel. Having read the book, the play was so abridged to be of but minor interest to me.

Thawing weather.

Mother, Ray and I took dinner with Joel & Georgina & family and Oliver & Marie also. We administered to baby Helen. [page break]

3 January 1928 • Tuesday

Mother and I went to the temple in time for the morning meeting as usual. I was in session of the Quarterly meeting of the Twelve from 9:30 A.M. until about 4: P.M. We remained at the Temple until about 6:30 P.M. I spent the evening at my desk at home.

4 January 1928 • Wednesday

Mother & I went to the Temple as usual. I was one of the speakers at the funeral services of Walter J. Poulton. Attended my Prayer Circle meeting in the evening. I settled my tithing in full for the year 1927.

I paid for tithing 580.34

5 January 1928 • Thursday

Attended to my regular duties at the Temple. Attended weekly Council meeting of the Twelve and Presidency in the Temple from 10: A.M. to <2:30> P.M. Left the Temple for home about 6:20 P.M. where we spent the evening.

6 January 1928 • Friday

Thawing weather.

I spent the day at the temple as usual. In the evening Mother & I as guests of LeGrand & Ina went to a show and later I took train for Rexburg, Idaho.

Mother & I are as well as we ever get and free from aches & pains.

7 January 1928 • Saturday

I arrived in Rexburg at 10:40 A.M. and was met by Peter J. Ricks of the Stake Presidency and taken in Auto to the Stake House where the Fremont Stake Conference was in session. Edw. Kimball being present, was asked to talk at 11:20 A.M. It was my intention to follow him but he took all the time. The attendance was 598 or 8% of the Stake Population.

I made my staying place at night with Pres Geo. S. Romney at his request. We lunched in the basement room of the Tabernacle, the Reliefsociety providing & serving same. At the afternoon meeting I was one of the speakers and occupied about 40 minutes with good liberty. Subject: Genealogy and Temple work. I spent the evening at Pres. Geo. S. Romney’s home with him talking over stake affairs.

8 January 1928 • Sunday

Rexburg.

Icy streets; freezing weather.

I occupied about 40 minutes in the forenoon Session of Conference on the Subject of the Eternity of the Marriage covenant. The attendance was 1538 or 23% of the Stake Population which is 6743.

In the afternoon I occupied about 40 minutes as the Concluding Speaker. Subject: Salvation, what it is, how it may be attained. At this meeting the attendance was 1891 or 28%. Sat. Afternoon it was 1132 or 17% The congregation Sunday afternoon could not all be seated, many Standing through the meeting. [page break]

I took 6:02 P.M. train for home.

9 January 1928 • Monday

I arrived in Salt Lake from Rexburg at 7: A.M. Spent a few hours at home and then went to the Temple where I spent the afternoon. I had a hair cut between. Spent the evening at home and took home Aunt Maria Clark, Estella Lee and our daughter Nerva who had been quilting at our home for Thelma.

10 January 1928 • Tuesday

Cold enough to hold the ice and snow so that it does not melt.

We are all well. Mother and I went to the Temple in the morning as usual. I spent considerable time to-day in preparing a talk for the B.Y.U. Annual Leadership week to be held in Provo the week beginning Monday, Jan. 23rd. I am scheduled to talk on the forenoon of the 23rd. The subject assigned to me is, Temple Building and Temple Service.

I spent the evening at home.

11 January 1928 • Wednesday

Attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. I took Mother, Nerva, Estella and Estella Lee down to Sugar House to Mamies in the afternoon. Attended my circle meeting in the evening at which three new members were in attendance, viz.: Bros Barlow, Haggan and Lyon.

I went over the List of Rules and Decisions, preparing suggested changes and added rules for all the Temples, to be [page break] Submitted to the First Presidency.

Spent the evening after leaving the Temple, at home, after 8: P.M.

12 January 1928 • Thursday

I attended Temple meeting @ 8:30, Meeting of the Twelve from 9: to 10: Council meeting from 10: to 1: P.M. Sealed five or six couples and met again with the Twelve until about 4: P.M. Was busy at my desk &c until I left for home about 6:30 P.M.

13 January 1928 • Friday

Weather moderated.

Mother & I went to the Temple in the morning and remained during the day. I attended a meeting of the Presidency & the Twelve @ 11:30 A.M. and a meeting of the Twelve & Presiding Bishopric following where was considered the Subject of the Priesthood and M.I.A. work consolidation. The plan of work presented by the Twelve was tentatively approved in both meetings. The consolidation of the Sunday Schools and Priesthood classes had already been approved. The plan might be stated as follows: Sunday morning Sunday school and Priesthood class work; and Tuesday evenings, M.I.A. and Priesthood quorum work. Friday nights for recreational evening, dancing, &c.

I remained at the Temple until after the first evening session got through and assisted Pres & Sis Grant in sealing up 14 sheets of names, children to parents. I performed the ceremony of sealing. There were 14 proxy’s and witnesses detained for their work. [page break]

14 January 1928 • Saturday

At home.

I remained at home all day.

Read and studied, &c.

15 January 1928 • Sunday

I attended 27th ward S. School & Sacrament meeting and the meeting in the Large, Tabernacle where I offered the closing prayer.

I heard Dr Hearst (Catholic) and John W. Evans over the Radio. We had Nina & family, Estella & Pen & Oliver & Marie to dinner with us.

16 January 1928 • Monday

I took Mother & Lucena down to Ninas in the morning and went and got them with my car in the evening. I spent most of the day in the Temple, and the evening at home.

17 January 1928 • Tuesday

Mother & I went to the Temple in the morning as usual where we remained until after 4: P.M. After Supper we went to the Wilks Theater, having bought tickets to aid Waterton Ward.

18 January 1928 • Wednesday

Home.

All well.

Several inches of light snow fell during last night. The weather continues cold. We have had continuous winter weather with much snow and ice since the middle of December.

This day as usual Mother & I went to the Temple in time for the 8:25 A.M. [page break] meeting. I did the speaking and enjoyed the Spirit of the Lord while doing so. The song, “I need thee every hour” was sung and Ralph [blank] sung “Holy Spirit.” I spoke of the Holy Spirit and of Jesus. as gifts and what it means to possess these gifts and related my dream of seeing the Savior. I thank the Lord for His inspiration.

We spent the day at the Temple until about 8:00 P.M. and went home where we spent the evening.

At the Temple Kirsten Anasa Mathiesen one of our proxies was taken very ill. I took her home in my car and gave her a blessing before leaving her in the hands of three Sisters.

19 January 1928 • Thursday

Mother and I went to the Temple as usual for the 8:25 A.M. meeting where I preside. At 9: A.M. I went to a meeting of the Twelve in the Adm. Bldg and at 10: A.M. met with the Brethren in regular weekly council meeting. From there at 3: P.M. I went to the Adm. Bldg. & met with the Twelve and Bishopric until after 4: P.M., thence back to the Temple.

I invited the Presidency and the Twelve to go with me to the Fifth floor of the Temple and see what our janitors have done in the way of cleaning. There I suggested as so many people visit this same particularly each Company of [page break] missionaries before leaving home and in view of the fact that it has not been cleaned since the dedication, that we have it cleaned. The Presidency said to wait another year so that it would be clean for the 100th anniversary of the organization of the Church, intimating that it might at that time be used. I suggested that the upholstered seats one at each end of the main room on the stand might be used in the Celestial room. The President said it would not match what we have there, that if needed we might buy some new furniture.

20 January 1928 • Friday

Mother and I spent the day in the Temple from 8: A.M. to 11 P.M. I performed the ceremony of sealing of eight Couples of dead and some children to parents after the first evening session. He & Sis. Grant assisted being proxies.

21 January 1928 • Saturday

I spent most of the day studying and writing preparing a speech on Temples & T. Work for Leadership week at Provo next Monday.

Edna came from Ogden and I took her & Lucena down town. I called at T.B. shop had name plates put on car No 3,779. Spent the evening at home [page break]

22 January 1928 • Sunday

I had the appointment to Logan Stake but their conference was postponed so I have the day at home and I need it in making preparation for the talk to be made tomorrow at Provo. I spent the day studying excepting the period taking Mother and Edna down to Sugar House.

23 January 1928 • Monday

I took 8:15 A.M. Electric train to Provo where I addressed about 200 Genealogical workers in Room B. I occupied 50 min. and my talk seemed to give good satisfaction. I also made a few remarks in the general assembly.

Returned to Salt Lake on 12:53 P.M. Car and went directly to the Temple where I stayed until about 5:00 P.M. Then I went to the Shop and got my car and went down to Alice Tates and got Mother, Nerva and Sister Tate and took them home

It has snowed nearly all day.

24 January 1928 • Tuesday

Mother and I went to the Temple as usual for 8:30 meeting where I preside. I have taken cold in my neck and am not feeling well. While at Provo I perspired freely while speaking and then went into the assembly room and sat through a meeting where it was chilly and I there took cold in my back.

In the afternoon, Mother and I visited some of our Temple workers who are ill, Aunt Phoebe Peart and Bro. & Sis. Shill. We called to see my Sister Nerva who was [page break] not at home. I retired early not feeling well.

25 January 1928 • Wednesday

I went to the Temple as usual in the early morning. On invitation of Pres. Heber J. Grant I accompanied him in his Auto to Provo where he spoke at two meetings. I offered prayer at afternoon meeting. I attended my circle meeting as usual.

26 January 1928 • Thursday

I went to the Temple in the morning as usual. Pres. Grant invited me to go with him to Provo in the Imperial Chrysler which I did, leaving at 10: A.M. we arrived in Provo at 11:30. Pres. Grant spoke to an over crowded assembly room of Students in the forenoon and to a similar audience in size of Leadership week attendants. I offered opening prayer in the latter meeting.

I see I have made the mistake of recording under this date my experience of the day before.

This day I attended weekly Council meeting from 10: A.M. to about 2:30 P.M. I took Oliver from his work to his home where we administered to Marie who is nearing Confinement. I went through the Temple for Richard Shackleton in the evening and when through the veil, I sealed up ten couples of Children and a family of Children Pres & Sis Grant went through and they stood as proxies. Mother & I left the Temple after 11:00 P.M.

Am better of my cold and lameness [page break] of back, contracted last Monday at Provo.

27 January 1928 • Friday

Mother and I went to the temple in the early morning as usual and I had a very busy day until I had to leave to take the train to Price at 4:30. I attended to the sealing work for the living did some correspondence and Set apart as Temple workers the following: My sister Minerva E. R. Knowlton, Elizabeth Ellen Homer and John F. Frost all to labor as day-time workers. The interviewing these people and others for indowment consumed much time. I took my car home and finding I was going to be cramped for time to get ready and get to the depot in time, I phoned my son LeGrand and he came and took me to the depot. I reached Price at 9:30 P.M. and put up at the Savoy Hotel where I wrote up my journal for the past two days.

28 January 1928 • Saturday

I left Price for Orangeville with John Franklin Killian at 8:10 A.M. & reached Orangeville at 9:40 A.M. a distance of 33 miles. Roads dry & dusty. Attended the forenoon and afternoon sessions of the quarterly Conference of the Emery Stake featuring the Priesthood work & spoke at both sessions as per programme. I held a meeting with the Stake Presidency at 4:00 P.M. and gave instructions [page break] which I feel will be profitable. I set apart the Presidency of the High Priests quorum; the Bishopric of the Castledale Emery ward and a counselor in the Bishopric of the Castlegate ward. I slept at a Sister Reed’s home arranged by Bp. Taylor.

29 January 1928 • Sunday

Orangeville

Am well

Fine day.

I attended and spoke at both the forenoon and afternoon meetings, and between meetings ordained & set apart several people as per list.

A Bro. Taylor, brother of the Bishop of Orangeville took me 33 miles to Price where I got train for home. Arrived home. at about 9:30 P.M.

30 January 1928 • Monday

I spent part of the day at the Temple and part at home, and in the evening Mother & I went to the Wilks and saw, “Sure Fire,” assisting Wasatch ward. Mother had her daughters and daughter up to our home in the afternoon. I went down to Sugar House and got Nina, Mamie and called for Estella and Marie and took them home.

31 January 1928 • Tuesday

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. Attended a H.J.G. & Co Stockholders meeting and was reelected a director.

I assisted in setting apart a large company of missionaries. I set apart 13 of [page break] them and instructed the company. I met with the First Presidency of question of Temple sealings and the case was turned over to me to settle.

I went through the Temple in the evening, my wife, Pres. & Sis Grant also went through.
