All well

I was at the temple at 7:30 A.M. and spent a busy day until [blank] oclock P.M. Elder Reed Smoot was the speaker. I wrote to Oliver & set him several addresses of German people he enquired about. I also wrote to Charles & Edna. [page break] On my recommendation, Elder Adolph Merz and John W. Lawson were accepted members of my prayer circle.

2 October 1924 • Thursday

I attended weekly Council meeting and attended to my work at the temple. I sealed about fifteen couples. Spent about 13 hours in the Temple.

3 October 1924 • Friday

The General Conference Convened this morning. The speakers at the morning meeting were Pres. Grant, Elders Widtsoe, H. G. Smith & Whitney. In the afternoon session, Pres. Clawson & Elders Ballard, Hart, Smoot, myself and R. S. Wells. I occupied 20 min. with fair liberty. I also spoke at the genealogical meeting held in the Assembly Hall after 4:00 o’clock. As it was raining hard in the evening, I did not go out to the Choir Concert.

4 October 1924 • Saturday

I attended the two sessions of regular Conference and the evening general Priesthood meeting. Good meetings.

5 October 1924 • Sunday

I attended morning and afternoon meetings of the General Conference and the S. S. Union Conference in the evening.

We have had the Amplifiers in use at one or two of the former Conferences but at this Conference [page break] the discourses were broadcasted so that people by the thousands if listening in would hear. Pres. Penrose being indisposed did not get to Conference but in his own home heard distinctly the discourses. He sent a brief message to the Conference.

6 October 1924 • Monday

Attended Special Priesthood meeting in the Assembly Hall at 10:00 A.M.

In the afternoon I attended the State fair and in the evening my wife and I attended a reception at the Bps’ Building of General Authorities Stake Presidencies and Bishoprics and their wives.

7 October 1924 • Tuesday

Rain last night.

I presided at a missionary meeting and set apart four missionaries. I corrected my Conference discourse manuscript.

Had a busy day at the Temple. In the evening I attended a Banquet tendered the Authorities of the Church by Bp. Nibley & wife at the Roof gardens on Hotel Utah, our wives accompanying us.

8 October 1924 • Wednesday

I spent a full and busy day at the Temple from about 7:45 to 8:00 P.M. I was out about 1½ hrs attended two board meetings. Attended my circle meeting at 6:30 P.M. and talked to the brethren ten or fifteen minutes on the subjects of prayer, tithing & night living. I sat up until mid night writing. [page break]

9 October 1924 • Thursday

I went to the Temple as usual. I presided at the Temple meeting and later attended the weekly Council meeting of the Presidency, the Twelve and Patriarch. I received the appointment to the Northern Arizona Stakes, Snow flake for Oct. 19, and St Johns Oct 26. In the evening Alice and I attended a reception & supper at the home of Bro. Thos Williams tendered to Bro. & Sis J. E. Talmage who are about to leave to go to England to preside over the European Mission. The First Presidency & Twelve & their wives were guests.

10 October 1924 • Friday

I attended to my duties as usual at the Temple. Went to the Hospital and assisted my Son LeGrand in administering to Ina who has had a miscarriage at about 3 mos.

Left the Temple after 7 P.M. & went home and made ready and took 11:30 train for Minidoka on the way to attend Cassia Stake Conference-Convention.

11 October 1924 • Saturday

I left Salt Lake on 11:30 train last night accompanied by Elder Ross & Cornwall and Sister Lucy Cannon, and arrived at Minidoka at 7:00 A.M. where we were taken by Auto to Oakley 50 miles. I rode with Loren J. Robinson Jr also Bro. Sister Cannon. The others were with a Bro. Price. It was a stormy but we had good roads and reached Oakley [page break] in time for meeting. I stayed at the home of Pres. Wm T. Joel where I was made welcome and comfortable. I attended morning, afternoon and evening public meetings.

12 October 1924 • Sunday

Oakley, Idaho.

Cold day.

Am well.

I attended morning and afternoon public meetings and spoke at both Took auto stage from Oakley to Burley at 5:30 A.M. hour’s ride and got train for home at 7:03 P.M.

13 October 1924 • Monday

Arrived in Salt Lake at 7:20 A.M., 10 min late from Cassia. Went home for breakfast thence to the Temple.

Had a busy day at the Temple until 5:30 P.M. when I left for home. I selected a three piece set of upholstered furniture at Dinwoodys Furn. Co. for St George Temple Celestial room. It Cost in Salt Lake $395.00. Freight will be about $20 extra.

I wrote Pres. Edward H. Snow telling him what I had done.

14 October 1924 • Tuesday

Home.

All well

I spent the day at the Temple until about 3:45. Attended a Board meeting of the Directors of the Utah Implement Vehicle Co at 4.00.

Went down to my daughter Sarah’s to assist her with some problems in our family records.

Mother & I went with Hugh & Sarah to a show in the evening.

I wrote to Oliver in Germany. [page break]

15 October 1924 • Wednesday

Home.

All well.

I presided at the Temple meeting in the morning. Sealed 28 couples and about 36 children.

Alice and I went to the Depot & bad goodbye to Bro. & Sister Talmage who with their son John & daughter Helen, left on the train at 1:00 P.M. U.P. train bound for Europe.

On invitation of Sister Grant, Alice, Lucena & I went to the S.L. Theater in the evening. The Bohemian Girl, an Opera.

16 October 1924 • Thursday

I sealed 14 couples, dead, between the time of the morning Temple meeting and the time of our Council meeting which was deferred until 11:00 A.M.

I wrote to Charles & Edna. Sealed a number of living couples during the day. Went home about 7:45 P.M.

17 October 1924 • Friday

Attended to my temple work as usual. Presided at the morning meeting. After the meeting, I met with Elders Jos F. Smith Jr., Jos Christensen & Jos Smith and after some discussion we decided to dispense with the use of slips and take our records from the temple sheets direct. This action to avoid mistakes and simplify the work. I spent an hour at the Genealogical office considering with Bro Harry Russell & Sister Lunction [page break] Genealogical and record keeping problems in connection with Temple work.

Attended to the sealing of living couples as usual.

Alice and I left the Temple at 6:30 P.M. and went down to Pres. C. W. Penrose’s home 1145 So. 9th East. By request of the President I layed my hands upon him and blessed and prayed for him. He had not sat up the last two days. He has not been out of his home for some weeks.

I made ready and took the 11:30 P.M. train for Minidoka, bound for Raft River Stake.

18 October 1924 • Saturday

I arrived at Minidoka on time, 7:08 A.M. Was met there by Bp. Melvin Earl Phippen of Albion who drove me in his Schevralleto Car to Almo a distance of 58 miles by his register, arriving there at 10 A.M. On account of so few being present we did not commence our meeting until 10:30. At the forenoon meeting I occupied about 30 minutes on the subject of Faith & works, <Nature’s testimony of God & the restoration. Rocks &c.> In the afternoon I continued the subject. Referred to the meetings being held in Albion Rupert by a womon, praying for healings, &c. Showed some other things necessary besides faith & healings. Had good liberty and occupied 40 minutes. See Faith & works.

I spent two hours with the members of the Stake Presidency in meeting at the home of Bp. John T. Horn where I spent the night & where I ate my meals. [page break]

Almo, Idaho.

I am well

Last night it rained for hours. This morning it is clear and a beautiful day.

At the morning session of Conference I occupied 40 minutes upon the subject of the Sacrament and the life of the Savior. Read Isa. 53:1. Had good liberty. At the afternoon session I was the concluding speaker and occupied 35 minutes Subject: Men are that they might have joy. Moses 1:39. The purposes of God. We have our agency and will power and are responsible as to whether we take a course to bring joy or sorrow. Gave examples of how through omitting to do certain things we suffer and how that we suffer for doing what we ought not to do.

Examples. Tanner case, Huntington, Paris Case, The Parable of the Rich man & Lazarus and the neglect of our dead, what it will mean to those who neglect it.

I set apart Richards Baire (a High Priest) second counselor to Bp. Phippen of Alvion.

Leaving Almo at 4:10 P.M. with Bp. Phippen we arrived in Rupert on 7:07 P.M. The train came in at 7:20 P.M. We called at Bro. [blank] in Albion and got a bite of supper, hurriedly eaten. Am glad to be on the train again bound for home.

20 October 1924 • Monday

Arrived in Salt Lake from Almo, Idaho at 7:15 A.M. [page break] After going home and getting cleaned up & having breakfast, I went to the temple and attended to desk work &c. Mailed group photograph to Oliver in Germany. Mother & daughters. Left the Temple for home at 6:00 P.M.

In the evening I wrote to Oliver.

21 October 1924 • Tuesday

I spent a busy day in the Temple from 7:50 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. In the evening Mother, Nina and I as the guests of Geo. & Edith went to a picture show.

22 October 1924 • Wednesday

I went to the Temple at 7:40 A.M. Elder Ballard was the speaker at the Temple meeting. He explained the marks on the garments.

I sealed 25 couples and 50 children if I mistake not. Attended to some business with Pres. Ivins at his office. Had a busy day in the temple.

Attended my prayer circle in the evening and later with George & Edith went down to Sugar House & saw LeGrand & Ina both of whom are not very well.

23 October 1924 • Thursday

All well. Weather ideal.

I went to the Temple as usual and spent a busy day. Attended the weekly Council meeting in the Temple from 10 A.M. to 12:30. Attended to sealings &c. Spent the later part of the evening at home.

24 October 1924 • Friday

I spent twelve hours in the [page break] Temple. Then went home and made ready and took the 11:45 P.M. Train for the Teton Stake in Idaho.

25 October 1924 • Saturday

I had a good night’s rest and sleep on the train. Arrived at Tetonia of the Teton Stake at 1:35 P.M. Took dinner at Bp. Harris’ home. I was one of ten speakers at the afternoon Conference meeting and occupied about 40 minutes. I spoke in a general way, of that section of the country as being especially favored for arid farming. Subj, Generalities. After meeting I rode with Pres. Albert Charles to Driggs where I made my stay at Pres Charles’ home. In the evening I addressed a special priesthood meeting, attendance 107. I occupied 50 min. with good liberty. Appealed to the lesser priesthood. Told them that I know the Gospel to be true & that if they would prove faithful as members, and active in the priesthood, they too would know of its truth. Appealed to them to be good, to do good, to be obedient, willing & never say no to a call from authorities.

26 October 1924 • Sunday

Driggs, Idaho.

Beautiful weather.

At the morning meeting I occupied 50 minutes principally upon the subject of service. <541 present> At the afternoon meeting 549 present. I occupied 45 min upon the subject, read expressions of non-members & commented. I had good liberty. Set apart a Bps counselor. Took, train at 3:18 for home. I feel that I have been especially blessed in the three last meetings, 28 local speakers in the four public meetings. [page break]

27 October 1924 • Monday

Arrived in Salt Lake from Teton at 7:15 A.M. Went home to breakfast and thence to the Bank where I renewed a $750. note to Feb. 2nd. Went to the Temple where I attended to correspondence & other desk work. I wrote a letter each to Bp. Jos. W. Greenhalgh of Safford, Ariz., Martin Layton of the same place and A. A. Smith of Ft. Thomas, Arizona. All concerning my Ashurst property.

I took Alice and my daughter Nerva & Mamie to the Victory show in the early evening.

28 October 1924 • Tuesday

I arose at 4:35 A.M. took my bath, shaved & made ready, took breakfast and got 6:40 car for my work at the temple. Received a letter from my cousin Herbert B. Whitney of Menden in answer to a letter from me. He sent a check of $12.50 for temple work.

Leaving the temple about 5:00 P.M., I took street car and went out to the home of Pres. Penrose 1145 So., 9th East, and while there gave him a blessing.

My brother Fred & his wife called in the evening.

29 October 1924 • Wednesday

Last night quite an amount of snow fell and this morning the slush is awful.

I went to the temple as usual. Stephen L. Richards was the speaker. I had asked Elder Whitney but he excused himself on account of a headache.

M. D. Wells went through the [page break] Temple today with his son. Bro. Jos. F. Smith, Jr., & I spoke to him and told him we thought he better not come any more without first speaking to us and let us speak to the President to learn his attitude. He is one who took a plural wife contrary to direct instruction given him by Pres. Jos. F. Smith and by a Patriarch who had no authority and was later excommunicated.

We had several unpleasant circumstances happen or incidents. I sealed 14 living couples.

30 October 1924 • Thursday

Attended to my duties as usual at the Temple, and attended the weekly meeting of our council from 10 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Attended to the living sealings, desk work, &c.

In the evening I took my wife & three daughters, Lucena, Nina and Estella to the Pantages show. Mother and I figure that as we have no auto we are entitled to some pleasure and we are justified in spending as much as the interest on an auto investment would amount to in shows for ourselves and those whom we may invite to join us. Then there is the difference in the upkeep and gas to our credit.

31 October 1924 • Friday

I went to the Temple as usual where I presided at the Temple meeting in the morning and attended to my regular work, sealing &c. [page break] Our little Orin is feverish to-day and he has a severe cough also. As Typhoid is so prevalent, we are concerned.

Geo L. Tate and I administered to Orin. He was given a warm soda & water bath and an enema &c and he had a fairly good night, may the Lord be praised.
