Home.

I worked at my office all forenoon and attended and spoke at the funeral services of John C. Sharp in 20th ward house in afternoon. I got out report of new stake organization for the News, &c.

Attended YMM Board meeting and Circle meeting in temple. [page break]

LeGrand & Ina & children took supper and spent the evening with us.

George came down and shingled several heads including mine.

All well.

Stormy day.

I attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Attended to business at my office &c. Received the appointment to North Davis Stake for next week-end.

4 February 1921 • Friday

I spent the forenoon at home. Wrote out a recommendation to the First Presidency that a new stake be organized of the six South Sanpete wards, Gunnison being Central.

Accompanied by Elder James E. Talmage I left Salt Lake at 1:15 P.M. for Boise, Idaho. Had a pleasant ride.

5 February 1921 • Saturday

We arrived in the early morning and were met at the station and taken to the Ohywee hotel by President Heber J. Hale.

We attended three meetings as fol. 10 A.M., 2 P.M. & 7:30 P.M. We spoke at all meetings. At 10 A.M. Stake Officer’s meeting I spoke of qualifications necessary for promotion in the priesthood, to hold office, go to the temple &c. Abstain from the use of tobacco, profanity and keep the law of tithing, &c.

At 2 P.M. conference meeting I cited [page break] the people to Jesus’ example going about doing good and advised the people to follow his lead. We have the gospel to give & there are many who need what we have to give and it is worth more than silver & gold Organize to accomplish it. Those engaged in the ministry at home abroad are engaged in that kind of work. The blow that broke the stone &c. At evening Priesthood meeting I spoke upon the Restoration of the Priesthood; Priesthood Covenant; “Behold it is my work & glory” &c Recited the story of Gerhordt.

6 February 1921 • Sunday

Boise, Idaho.

This day I fasted and attended three public meetings in the auditorium of the High School building and spoke at each. At 10 A.M. I spoke to the children on honor to parents earthly and heavenly. Quoted scripture & recited, “Much Loved Ben”; “Which Shall it be” & other sayings. At 2 P.M. I spoke on the subject Sacrament & Atonement. Read Isa 53: and appealed to the people to not crucify anew the Savior by our wickedness & abomination.

Sunday evening I occupied 60 min Subj: History Repeats itself. Condition doctrine & needs of the people now not unlike those of other days. Ch. of Eng. Article of Religion 11. The works that are necessary. I set apart two R. Class officers Heber Clark Stake Supt. one of them & ordained Jesse Short a Seventy.

I reconfirmed and sealed upon [first, middle, and last names redacted] his [page break] priesthood and temple blessings all that he had lost through excommunication, this by instruction of the First Presidency (Feb. 6) J. E. Talmage assisting me. We took one meal at Counselor Wards’ home Sat. and one at Pres. Hale’s Sunday and a luncheon at Ex. Bp. & H. Counselor Lewis’ home after evening meeting. I advised Bp Fisher of Bancroft now living in Boise to have his wife come to him.

At about 11 P.M. this date my dau. Lucena Card gave birth to her third child, a boy, my 27th grand child.

7 February 1921 • Monday

I arrived home from Boise, Ida. about 5 P.M. and learned of the confinement of my daughter Lucena in Hyland Park also of the serious burning by electricity of my son-in-law Clarence Silver which happened this morning while at work. I visited him at the hospital and administered to him as others had done. He is badly burned about the face and on his arms. We are in hopes that his vision is not impaired. His bandages covered all his face except the lips. I also visited Lucena. Administered to Clarence.

Home.

I attended to the duties of my office. Assisted in setting apart missionaries and presided at meeting

Visited the L.D.S. Hospital and administered to my son-in-law Clarence Silver whose condition seems favorable [page break] I called on Bro. Hull at the Hospital. Went down to Clarence’s home with Mamie in the evening and returned home with George. LeGrands’ wife Ina J gave birth to a baby girl at 8:45 P.M. We all rejoice in this blessing. This is our 28th grand child and two within two days.

Home.

Condition of our sick people improving.

I spent my time in the forenoon at my office. George and I took lunch with Sarah at her home.

By request of Pres. H. J. Grant I accepted a position on the directorate of the Heber J. Grant & Co. The Des. News Co. hold some stock in this company which is to be transferred to the Trustee & Trust and my appointment is as I understand to look after the interests of the Church. I signed a statement which is in the nature of an oath of office and attended the first meeting of the Board for me this day.

I attended Religion Class, YMM. and Circle meetings. After supper George and I in his car went down to Mamies where Mother had already gone gone with Mamie. They went with us to see Ina & baby and Lucena & baby.

10 February 1921 • Thursday

Home.

We have typical Portland weather.

Word comes that Clarence Silver had a restless night and is very nervous and experiences great pain. I attended regular Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 3:30 P.M. [page break] Attended a Book of Mormon committee meeting, went to the hospital and administered to Clarence, Called on my sister Nerva and later Mother and I went to the Paramount Empress where the Boy Scouts were shown up & their trip to Brice & Zion’s Canyons was shown.

Home.

Sick folks in the family improved.

I spent the day at my office where I had a number of callers. Among them President Hinckley and Bp Maxfield of Deseret Stake who consulted me about their inter stake water troubles, Delta ward affairs &c. Bp Choles from Malad called and asked a number of questions. I spent the evening at home.

12 February 1921 • Saturday

I spent the forenoon at home until about 11 A.M. Went down town and attended to some business and took 12 noon train to Kaysville where I attended the funeral services of Vernon C. Layton an elder 25 yrs of age who died in Los Angeles while filling a mission there. The speakers were in order as follows: Bro Criddle, Bp Hyde, Pres Blood, J. W. McMurrin and myself. I occupied 40 min. Spoke of Christs’ Eternal progress & ours. Mother, Mamie & I went to the Hipodrome in the evening and saw “East Lynn” by Callinger &ce. [page break]

Pres. R. S. Wells and I attended North Davis Stake Conference held in Kaysville meeting house.

Three sessions were held and each of us spoke at each session. I spoke upon the topics Service, ward teaching, qualifications to advance in the priesthood & temple object of M.I.A work &c. Took 9 P.M. car for home. Folks all improving

14 February 1921 • Monday

Valentines day.

I spent the forenoon at my office and the afternoon at home working on my books &c. In the evening I visited Clarence Silver at the hospital and blessed him. He is progressing nicely. About 10:30 last in the evening the house on the same street from us a block distant west caught fire in the upper story and burned the roof and upper story. I watched it while the fire department were at work extinguishing the fire.

15 February 1921 • Tuesday

Yesterday the wind commenced to blow and during the night it snowed some and turned it very cold this morning. I went to my office as usual. My son LeGrand & I took luncheon with my daughter Sarah. At 6 P.M. my daughter Mamie called for me at my office and in her car took me out to Lucenas & got Mother & Ruby. We called at Ina’s on our return trip. About 9:30 Mamie [page break] who is staying with us went down to the barn to put some alcohol in the radiator of her car to avoid freezing of the water. She was alone and lit a match to see if the radiator was full when the alcohol caught fire and flashed up in her face and before she could smother out the flames it badly burned her face. We heard her screams and ran to her assistance. I grabbed a sauce pan which had water in it at the sink and with that water extinguished the flames in the radiator. Bro Geo. Gibbs heard and responded. He brought some resonal and we applied it to her burned face. It seemed to be the thing she needed for she got relief through it.

I went to my office as usual.

Attended B. of M. Committee meeting.

Went to the temple and did a number of sealings by request of temple authorities.

Administered to Bro. Thos. Hull & Clarence Silver at the LDS Hospital

Went to LeGrands’ home in Sugar House and administered to a blessing to his baby naming her Nona. Visited my daughter Lucena at his home in Highland Park.

17 February 1921 • Thursday

Attended weekly council meeting from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. At this meeting my appointment was changed from Bannock to Big Horn. This was [page break] done on my own suggestion on receiving word that a new counselor is need in the B. H. Presidency. No appointment having been made to that stake. President Hart was asked to fill the appointments I had to Bannock & to Bennion Ward. I spent some time in my office both before and after meeting. With Alice and others of the family I attended a show in the evening and took the 11:30 train for Butte & the Big Horn Stake.

18 February 1921 • Friday

On train, without incident worthy of mention I arrived in Butte at 5 P.M. and got N.P. train out for Billings at 9:40. While in Butte I went to a show.

19 February 1921 • Saturday

Arrived in Billings 6:30 A.M. and got train out for Cowley at 8:05 and arrived in Cowley in time to see the closing session of the morning session of conference. Counselor Tippetts met me at the train. I stayed at Pres. Edw Crofts’ home. At the afternoon session the attendance was 401 Morning session 221. I occupied about 50 minutes. Subject— Missionary work following reports of local missionaries. Bro Charles Lyman spent the evening at Pres Croft’s & stayed all night. I visited all the evening.

20 February 1921 • Sunday

Cowley. B.H.

Am well.

I attended 10 A.M. meeting, attendance 625. Stake Pop. 3353. I occupied about 40 minutes. Subject sacrament, Honor God & Parents. Recited Poem, “A Mother to her Son”. [page break]

At 2 P.M. Session the attendance was 787 I occupied about 40 minutes.

Subject, Gospel Origin, Gospel oneness. What the gospel is. Principles defined. Quoted Articles 1 & 11 of the Articles of religion of the Church of England. Had good liberty.

Many people came up and shook hands after meeting. I set apart Bro V Brigham L. Tippets first Counselor and Albert Olson second counselor to Pres Edward Croft of the stake presidency. Took 5:05 P.M. train for Billings. Arrived at 8:50 P.M. and took 9:30 N.P. train for Butte.

21 February 1921 • Monday

Arrived in Butte from Billings at 6:30 A.M. and left Butte for Salt Lake at 7 A.M.

Have had some lameness in my right arm for some days which disturbed my rest nights but last night I had no trouble. I am wondering if the same power that enlightened my mind while speaking in the conference did not heal the bodily affliction. I asked for that blessing and I received it.

While in Cowley, Pres. Croft related a circumstance when an 8 yr old boy of Bro. Willis’ was dangerously ill. The parents went to the Lord in prayr and told him that if he desired the boy much as they loved him and desired that he should live they would give him up. Then Bro Willis & Pres. Croft administered to him. The boy, when the ceremony was over, looked up and asked whose hand was on his head besides theirs then said, “I know. It was the Lords.”

Arrived in Salt Lake at 10:45 P.M. Found all fairly well. [page break]

Washington’s birth day.

Alice & I took noon train to Farmington where we had been invited to attend the annual old folks reunion. We enjoyed ourselves and had a pleasant visit with old friends & returned home about 7 P.M.

23 February 1921 • Wednesday

This is the 60th anniversary of my birth. I went to the office in the forenoon and in the afternoon Mother & I went to the Pantages Show. Attended Circle meeting after which Geo. & Joel with their cars took their wives and Alice & me & Ray & Estella to see our folks in Sugar House and Hydes Park. We returned to Joel’s and had a nice supper. A pleasant evening spent. Georgina and Edith made birthday cake and otherwise provided supper. George & LeGrand made me a present of a receipt in full for $419.00 I was owing them on a land deal &c. Wayne gave me a nice tie, Brent two pairs of nice socks, LeGrands children a box of candy, Sarah two small silk handkerchiefs, Nina & Orin a book.

24 February 1921 • Thursday

I attended weekly council meetings from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. [page break] taking as usual time to eat.

Was in my office before and after meeting.

My daughter Nerva and all her children came in from Tooele in the afternoon on their way to Incom, Idaho where Geo. L. is engaged in the Mdse business. I wrote to Bro. James G. McKay in London and others.

25 February 1921 • Friday

I spent part of the day in my office, attended to business before Pres. Grant & Pres. Penrose. I called on the Income tax collector and obtained information. Called on Dr. Calderwood and received a medical examination with out charge as one of the insured in the Beneficial Life.

The Dr tested the urine and pronounced it all right. He tested my blood pressure and found it about 130. He said that at my age it could easily be 140 & not be out of place.

I accompanied Alice, Nerva, Joel & wife, Geo & wife & Ruby to the Empress and when over I took train for McCammon, thence to Montpelier & Paris.

26 February 1921 • Saturday

I got off train at 5 A.M. and McCammon and got train for Montpelier where I was met by Pres. Edwd C. Rich and went with him to the Stake tabernacle where I attended a High Council meeting at which [first and last names redacted] and [page break] wife were being tried on the charge of having had illicit or adulterous relations before marriage a child having been born 94 days after their marriage in the temple. They pleaded innocence and claimed that the child weighed but 3½ lbs when 10 days old.

While the case was yet in progress I left with Bro. Francis Martin Winters by train & sleigh to Paris 12 miles distant.

I arrived about 2:25 P.M. and went in conference meeting and was one of the speakers occupying about 40 minutes upon the subject of tithing. Read gems from Brown’s book on tithing & commented.

I retired early in the evening.

27 February 1921 • Sunday

Paris.

At the morning session I spoke about 30 minutes Subject Unity [“]Except ye are one ye are not mine” What draws us apart? tale bearing bearing false witness &c. Recited Gossip and told story The thre black crows.

At afternoon I occupied about 60 min. Subject, The Gospel. Origin One only— Its principles, &c.

Between meetings I ordained two high priests and set apart several high councilmen.

I visited Sister Emily Richards & family. Attended Oratorio Daniel in the evening by Academy students. Administered to a Bro. Goges.

Stayed at Pres. Wm L. Rich’s home. [page break]

28 February 1921 • Monday

Paris. Ida.

I left for home on 8 A.M. train and arrived in Salt Lake at 6 P.M.

Bro George of Montpelier met me at the train in Montpelier and gave me a small cheese to bring home. On arriving home I learned that my daughter Sarah had left this A.M. for San Francisco to see her husband who with Elder D O McKay was to arrive from Japan, China & Samoa Hawaii about the 1st and leave for Samoa on the 3d of March. Pres. Heber J. Grant & Sister McKay & Bro A N Ivins accompanied Sarah.

Nina & children are still with us.
