Home.

All our folks usually well.

Mother, Estella and I attended the rendition of “The ‘Messiah,[’]” by George Frederick Handel, presented by the Salt Lake Oratorio Society, Squire Coop conductor, in the Large Tabernacle. The attendance was large and the rendition excellent. George L & Nerva & their children left for Tooele, their home. Edna & Oliver accompanied them. Geo. & Joel with their auto took them and their effects home. They have been with us since Dec. 23d.

The sun shines bright to-day and the temperature is modified considerably. There has been no thawing weather for weeks. Snow and ice still abounds. In the afternoon Mother, Ruby & I went to the Broadway show. Mother & I called on cousin Minerva R. Young and family. On our return home we found Estella Lee and some of her children who had come in from Tooele with Joel. Oliver also returned with George. Geo & Joel and their wives came in and spent the evening.

All well.

I attended a meeting of the Council of Twelve held in the Church Offices Building from 11 AM until 2:30 P.M. [page break] At this meeting [blank] Evans and Louise Clark were before us for hearing. The case was postponed for the present. I spent the remainder of the day chiefly in my office and the evening at home. Pres. Hugh J Cannon & Sarah & baby, Marian Clark, Annie Steed & Estella Lee had supper with us and spent the evening here.

All well. Still cold.

I spent the day in my office. Attended to business committee work and Elder Richard R. Lyman & I administered to Bro. John Foresburg. Had a conversation with President Grant and Elder Ballard on present conditions with respect to violations of Church rule on plural marriages.

I went with Oliver to the Ecomomy Shoe Store and bought him two pairs of shoes. Settled tithing in full for the year 1919.

Spent the evening at home on my books &c.

4 January 1920 • Sunday

All well.

Mother & I attended temple fast meeting in the morning, our 27th ward fast meeting in the after[page break]noon and the 18th ward meeting in the evening. We took dinner with George & Edith between 4 & 5 o’clock. Fasted & gave offerings &c After the evening meeting, Geo. took Mother, Ray, Estella Lee and me in his Auto down to LeGrand & Ina’s and from there to Orin’s and Nina’s, thence to Clarences’ & Mamie’s, thence home arriving home before 11 P.M.

It commenced to snow in the early evening.

All well

Snowed nearly all night & day.

I spent the day at my office down town and the evening at my home office.

I had a visit from my old missionary acquaintance Lon J. Haddock who but recently returned from England where he spent about six months with Pres. Geo. A. Smith.

I spent the evening at home studying.

All usually well.

We have about one foot of fresh snow and it still snows lightly,

I spent the day at my office from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. I set apart three missionaries. Attended to business at Bank &c. [page break] I spent the evening at home studying, reading &c.

Nina & Mother washed to-day and Nina & Orin took supper with us.

7 January 1920 • Wednesday

Some wind.

Cold at night.

I spent the forenoon in my office. Attended General Board meetings of R Class at 3:15; M.I.A. at 5 P.M. and my Circle meeting at 6:30.

I went with my son Joel to the Gibson home and administered to Bella Gibson who is very ill.

My son George and I went in auto down to my son LeGrands’ in Sugar House returning home at one o’clock A.M. On my recommendation it was agreed that my son George pay LeGrand $1500. for a half interest in the LeGrand Richards Realty Co: and that the earnings of the company for the last nine months be divided equally between them. LeGrand insisted on accepting nothing for a half interest in the business notwithstanding he had been offered $1000. for a ⅓ interest. But he yielded and both were made happy.

While at LeGrands’, Sister Stagg came in crying as Bro Stagg had not got home [page break] from his work at the CW. & M. Co. at 11 P.M. We spent about an hour trying by phone to learn his whereabouts. He finally came after mid night. He had been assisting a friend to find his balance in accounts.

All fairly well.

I attended regular weekly council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. until about 2 P.M.

I witnessed an exebition of Church moving pictures in the basement of the Offices Bldg. Answered some correspondenc &c.

Joel & Georgina and Mother and I went down to Sarahs’ and Joel & I administered to Hugh. Has been in bed for several days.

9 January 1920 • Friday

All well as usual.

Still snow and cold.

I attended to several items of business down town and spent most of the day in my office. Polished the floors &c.

In the evening Mother and I and Geo. & Edith attended the concert at the Tabernacle where Madame Lusia Tetrazzini sang. Tickets sold as high as 2.75 each. Ours were complimentary, but we had 25¢ to pay on each ticket for tax. [page break]

Deep Snow.

I spent the day from about 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. in my office. After dinner Mother and I went shopping and while downtown we bought six new records for our Ambrola and went to pictures.

All well. Still Cold.

I attended Ensign High Priests’ Qm. meeting in the Eighteenth ward and was one of the speakers. I occupied about 20 min. Recited “Get Somebody Else”; Moses 1:39 and used the parable of Talents. Mat. 25:

I attended services in the Large Tabernacle and in the 27th ward. Elder Fred J. Pack spoke in 27th.

Geo & Edith & children took supper with us and Joel & Georgina spent some time with us after evening meeting.

I spent the day at my office getting home at 7 P.M.

Still cold weather

I spent the day <afternoon> at my office and the evening at home. In the forenoon I sealed sixty-five couples [page break] in the temple. Mother & LeGrand and Geo & Edith were proxies. I assisted in setting apart a company of about 45 missionaries myself setting apart five of them. Pres. Hart & I instructed them. A busy day.

All well

Lucena & children visited at our home.

I spent the day at my office in the main.

I bought a black suit at Z.C.M.I. for $30.00 Regular price $40.00. A ¼ off sale is on.

Attended YMM Bd meeting and my Circle meeting. After the latter we had a testimonial meeting.

I attended weekly council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 3 PM

I worked in my office until about 5 P.M. when I went with Orin down to his home and spent the evening. Mother, Edna, Estella, Oliver and Ray were there also. Oren took us down and brought us home at 4 P.M. He had supper and played games. [page break]

This day a thaw set in, the first for a number of weeks.

I spent the day in my office working on commentary of my own. My daughter Nina is doing some typewriting for me at her home.

This day I received from Z.C.M.I. my black suit which I bought at sale price $30.00 ¼ reduction.

I retired to bed early as I was up late last night & have to rise earley to go to Tooele Conference in Grantsville.

17 January 1920 • Saturday

Beautiful mild day.

Accompanied by Brother John Henry Evans of the R Class Board I left Salt Lake on 7:30 A.M. train, my wife accompanying us as far as Warner Station. She went up to Tooele and Br Evans & I were met by Bro. C. R. McBride with auto and driven to Grantsville where we attended Tooele Stake Conference, two sessions. I spoke at both. Attendance at morning meeting 71 & at afternoon meeting 113. I spoke in the morning on the evidences of the Divine mission of Joseph Smith [page break] as shown by his accomplishments. A tree is known by its fruits. I occupied about 50 minutes. In the afternoon I occupied about 25 min on R. Class work & why parents should support the auxiliaries.

I returned to Tooele with Bro. C. R. McBride and with mother staid at Nerva’s overnight. Hyrum Lee & Estella spent the evening with us.

18 January 1920 • Sunday

At Nervas’ in Tooele.

I went with Bro. McBride to Grantsville and attended Conference. At morning session there were present by Count 313. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 20 min. Subject: Here is the time and place to prepare for the life to come. Recited the “Little Parable”, “I made the cross” &c.

At 2 P.M. meeting I occupied about 40 min. Subj: Word of wisdom & general right doing. Three reasons assigned. 1st: Honor of Parents & posterity; 2nd, Honor the church & to Do the Father’s will. I recited. “A Mother to her Son”.

The attendance was 333.

After meeting Saturday I ordained Arthur W. Morrison a High Priest and Bishop and set him apart to preside on [page break] the Stockton ward, organized last Sunday.

After meeting to-day I ordained and set apart several officers. Returned to Tooele with Bro McBride and took supper at Estella Lee’s

Mother & I later took 810 P.M. train for Salt Lake, arriving home at 10:30 & found all usually well. I wrote up my journal for the past two days. I ate dinner Saturday with Bp. Richard Jefferies & Sunday with August K Andrsen. Had a good Conference.

This is a mild beautiful day.

I spent the day in my office and in the evening I took Mother and Baby to the “Empress” and saw “Everywoman”.’

20 January 1920 • Tuesday

All well

Mild weather

I worked at my office all day. Attended missionary meeting and assisted in setting apart a company of about 35 missionaries.

I spent the evening at home

Wrote three letters after supper.

My daughter Nerva is doing some copy work for me with the typewriter. I am enlarging my com[page break]entary or Memorandum book of Subjects. Am converting script writing into typewriting.

All well

Moderated weather. It thaws during the day and freezes at night and the streets are icy and slick.

I worked at my office all day. Administered to two sisters named Brown and Badley. Attended M.I.A. Bd. and circle meetings.

Mother visited with Mamie and she & Clarence brought Mother home in auto.

To-nights’ News reports seven cases of Influenza in Salt Lake and in Ogden Many cases with two deaths from that disease. 6000 cases reported in Chicago and for the last 24 hours the cases have been reported at the rate of 50 to the hr.

Surely pestilence is again sweeping the Country. This is an indication of the approach of the end.

I attended weekly council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. until about 3 P.M. I spent the remainder of the day until 6:45 [page break] in my office, working on my commentary.

I spent the evening at home.

23 January 1920 • Friday

All well.

I worked in my office until 2 P.M. and then went home and got my dinner and got ready to leave for Heber City, to attend Wasatch Stake Conference. I left on D. & R.G. 4:25 P.M. train, accompanied by Dr. H Ray Hatch.

Mother went to the temple with Sarah and Hugh.

We arrived in Heber at 8:15 P.M. and were met by Pres Jos. R. Murdock and I was taken to his home where I made my home while in Heber. We sat up late talking over stake and other matters.

24 January 1920 • Saturday

Heber.

Am well. Clear day.

I attended two regular Conference meetings, and in the evening met with the Stake Presidency. I spoke in the forenoon meeting, occupying 20 min. Subj: Love & Service. I also spoke in the afternoon, 60 min on The Holy Spirits’ operation vs. the operations of Spiritualism. We administered to a siter Clyde.

25 January 1920 • Sunday

Heber.

Am well.

Fine day.

I attended three public con[page break]ference meetings and a meeting of the H. Council & the Bishops and spoke at all the meetings.

At 1st meeting I spoke on the sacrament and Atonement. At 2 P.M. meeting I spoke on attendance at Conference & Kindred topics, and in the evening I was the only speaker and occupied about 60 min. on Subject of character depend & the power of thought in its formation. I did not have at this meeting the liberty that I usually have.

Between meetings we went to the homes of three sick people and administered to them. This has been a strenuous day. Religion classes were once held throughout the stake but none exist now, but they have a seminary in Heber and are talking of buying for $2000. a site on which to build for that purpose.

We took steps to organize immediately Religion Classes in all the wards. Other important work was done.

26 January 1920 • Monday

I left for home on 7 A.M. train Arrived in Salt Lake at 11:15 A.M.

I attended to some business at my office and in the evening attended Ensign Stake P. Meeting and was one of the speakers. Sat up until 11 P.M. arranging proxys for sealing work at the temple tomorrow.

My sister Nerva took ill. [page break]

All well. Fine day.

With twelve other members of the family, I went to the temple at 9 a.m. and we sealed up children to parents, about thirty couples. Mother, Oliver, Estella & Geo. F. Knowlton were each baptized for twenty persons.

I later assisted in setting apart missionaries, attended to some office work and in the evening Mother and I accompanied Geo. & Edith as their guests to the Paramount Empress.

28 January 1920 • Wednesday

All well.

Nice weather.

I spent the forenoon at home. Made preparations to leave tomorrow to visit the Maricopa and St. Joseph Stakes. I attended the M.I.A. Gen. Bd. and Circle meetings, and later a ward reunion.

29 January 1920 • Thursday

All well as usual. Weather moderated. Much sickness (Lagrip) through out the country.

I attended weekly meeting of the Council of the First Presidency, Twelve & Patriarch in the temple from 10 A.M. to 3:15 P.M. I went home and took the 4:45 P.M. train for Mesa, Arizona in company with Elder D. O. McKay, Willard Young and F. Otterstrom. We expect Pres. Grant to join us at Colton, California. [page break]

All well, running behind time, engine troubles.

Before reaching Barstow we decided we could not connect with Pres. Grant at Colton and, changed our rout going to Phoenix on the Santa Fe Ry from Barstow.

31 January 1920 • Saturday

We arrived at Phoenix at 9:10 A.M. Bp. Price let us take his car and Elder McKay drove us to Mesa, 18 miles. Had a punctured tire in Pima, reached Mesa at 11 A.M. Meeting in session. Pres Grant, Jos. W. McMurrin there in attendance.

Meeting was held in the Opera House and there was an unusually large attendance. By Count, [blank]

In the afternoon there were [blank] present out of a stake population of 3365. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 90 min. Subject temple and Sacrifice. An extra effort and sacrifice will have to be made. It should be made cheerfully.

A priesthood meeting was held in the evening at which 311 were present. I spoke upon the subject of How to get an efficient priesthood.

I stayed at Bro. Stapley’s of the Stake Presidency. President Grant also stayed there. They have a magnificent home. [page break]
