I spent the forenoon with Willard Young in my office on committee work and a part of the afternoon.

I administered a blessing to my niece Emma Grover and gave her advice sought of me.

George & Edith, Mother & I went to the Paramount Empress show in the evening.

2 December 1920 • Thursday

I attended regular weekly [page break] Council Meeting from 10 to 2 P.M. Attended to Committee work with members of the Bishopric and with Willard Young after meeting.

In the evening I attended a testimonial tendered to Pres Hugh J. Cannon by the Liberty Stake people and besides paying my 50¢ entrance fee I gave him 10.00. I spent some time with my daughter Sarah in the early evening.

3 December 1920 • Friday

Home.

Snowed last night.

I went to my office as usual in the forenoon and spent the afternoon reading & studying.

I took Mother, Lucena, Rega & children to a ward show the proceeds to go to the S. School 27th ward in evening. After the Show Mother, Ray & I went with George & Edith in his car to take Rega & Lucena to their home in Hyland Park. We called at our daughter Mamies and at Sarah’s.

Beautiful day.

I spent the forenoon at my office. I went to Ogden with my son-in-law, Hugh J. Cannon to see him off to Japan and the missions of the Church. I went back to Sarahs’ house before going to my own home.

5 December 1920 • Sunday

I took 8 A.M. train for Brigham. Arrived at 10:30 and was met at the Ry. Station by Brother Joseph N. Stohl of the Box Elder Stake Presidence who took me in his car to the tabernacle and from place to place while in Brigham.

At the morning session I was the concluding speaker and occupied 45 minutes on the subject of “Officers and service” I quoted “Get Somebody Else.”

At the afternoon meeting I was the concluding speaker and occupied 45 minutes on the Atonement and Sacrament. Some other suggestions were woven in to my discourses I had good liberty and enjoyed the meetings.

I broke fast at 4:45 P.M. Took 5:33 Bamberger car for home and arrived in Salt Lake about 6:50 P.M. Later in the evening Mother, Ray & I went with Joel and Georgina in his auto down to Sarah’s. She is getting on nicely.

The baby, “Alice Richards Cannon” born Nov. 22nd and blessed Nov. 30 is doing nicely.

6 December 1920 • Monday

I spent the day until about 3 P.M. in my office. I hauled 1209 lbs of potatoes from O.S.L Ry and pitted about 800 lbs of them.

I went to Bountiful and addressed the 190th Quorum of Seventy in Conference of that quorum. [page break] I set apart Bro. Frank Yorker a Bohemian a president and member of the 190th quorum Council. He has a record to his credit of 48 persons he has baptized. I spoke upon the subject of right living for our own salvation’s and for the example & its effects upon others and the responsibility resting upon the Seventy to help the Lord by proper use of his name and authority in saving souls both physically and spiritually.

7 December 1920 • Tuesday

I assisted in setting apart a company of missionaries. I set apart four regular missionaries and blessed Arthur Brenner who is to accompany his father and mother to California.

Received a call from Pres. Budge of Logan Stake & considered with him matters pertaining to that stake. Had important conversation with Pres. S. B. Young on Seventie’s work &c.

Mother, Ray & I visited Geo. & Edith in the evening.

8 December 1920 • Wednesday

I set apart Bro. Atkinson a missionary to the Eastern States.

Attended Y.M.M. Bd. Meeting and my Circle meeting. Attended to some office work.

Sister Richards did a big day’s washing and then took a chill. She fevered up and had sore [page break] throat and aching through her body & limbs. I administered to her and otherwise waited upon her.

9 December 1920 • Thursday

Home.

Cold weather.

Alice got some rest during the night. I administered to her again this morning.

At 10:30 A.M. I left Salt Lake for Kanab. Arrived at Marysvale at 7:35 P.M. and left for Panguitch with George Hanks by auto at about 8 P.M. a distance of about 60 miles. We arrived in Panguitch about 11 P.M. I stayed at Geo Hanks home and slept cold all night.

10 December 1920 • Friday

Panguitch

Cold day.

Am usually well.

I started for Kanab with mail carrier but overtaking a freight truck just out side of Panguitch I secured passage on it as it was going through to Kanab that day.

The stage would go only to Mt. Carmel Friday. Arrived in Kanab about 6 P.M. Very cold ride. I met with members of the Stake Presidency that evening and I set apart the following;

Edward Carroll, ordained a bishop & set apart to preside over the Orderville Ward. Alfred R. Meeks, a H.P., set apart 1st Counselor and Charles H. Esplin ordained a H.P. and set apart second counselor.

Stayed at Pres. Wm. W. Seegmiller’s home while in Kanab, and had comfortable quarters. [page break]

11 December 1920 • Saturday

Kanab.

Am well. Cold day.

I attended 10 A.M. meeting. Attendance was 101. I was the concluding speaker and occupied about 50 minutes with good liberty.

Subject— Faith and works as applied to the world and to members of the Church.

At 2 P.M. meeting the attendance was 151. I was the concluding speaker and occupied 60 min.

Missionary experiences in Finsbury Park, London and mission conditions during the war.

At 4:20 attended a meeting of the High Council and there I set apart Wm S. Rust an alternate.

I took supper with Sister Woolley Chamberlain. Several other brethren were with me.

A cold wind from the north with snow made it a very rough night.

12 December 1920 • Sunday

Kanab.

Am well.

A clear cold day with the ground white.

At the 10 A.M. session the children were present. The sacrament was administered in 16 minutes. Attendance was 216. I was the last speaker and occupied 50 min. Subject— “Honor Parents”. Had good liberty.

At 2 P.M. meeting the attendance was 336. Stake population 2109.

I was the concluding speaker [page break] running over the time about 5 min. I occupied 40 min. on the attitude of the Church towards tobacco users, profaners’ &c. The young should be duly taught the necessary qualifications to go to the temple, receive the priesthood.

After the meeting I rode with Alfred R. Meeks and his sister Ellen Hoyt in a single seated buggy from Kanab to Mount Carmel and we were met there by Bp. Carroll and a Bro Lamb in an auto and taken on to Orderville where a public meeting was in progress. I addressed the meeting about 50 minutes on the Subject of “Character Defined” and the “Power of Thought”. Had good satisfaction. I stayed at the home of Bishop Edward Carroll overnight.

13 December 1920 • Monday

Orderville.

Am well. Moderated weather.

Bp. Carroll and wife with their auto took me from Orderville to Panguitch between the hours of 10:30 A.M. and 2 P.M. at distance of 49 miles. It was a comfortable ride. From Panguitch I rode with Geo. Hanks in his auto leaving about 3 P.M. and arriving in Marysvale at about 6 P.M. I stayed at the [blank] hotel and was comfortable. Phoned home.

14 December 1920 • Tuesday

Marysvale.

Am well.

I left for home [page break] at 8:30 A.M. and arrived in Salt Lake at 5:15 P.M. Found Alice up but not well. Others well.

15 December 1920 • Wednesday

Home.

Mother improved.

I spent the forenoon in my office as usual. Attended to correspondence, wrote up my journal from memorandum for one week, to date. Attended meetings of the R.C. Bd., M.I.A. Bd. and my Circle. In the later evening Mother and I went to the Empress show.

16 December 1920 • Thursday

Home.

All family well.

I attended regular weekly Council meeting in the temple and then went down to my daughter Sarahs’ and spent a couple of hours talking over her business affairs her husband having gone upon a mission and she having the responsibility of home affairs.

Mother and I with Estella and Ray attended the ward picture show in the evening.

17 December 1920 • Friday

Home.

All usually well.

I set apart Bro. Frank Croft and his wife Geneva Jane as missionaries to Southern States.

A good portion of the day I spent with Sister Richards Xmas shopping, and took mid-night [page break] train for Montpelier.

18 December 1920 • Saturday

I arrived in Montpelier about 9:20 A.M. and was met at the Ry. Station by Stake President Edward C. Rich and taken to his home where I was made comfortable during my stay. I attended the 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. Sessions of the Montpelier Stake Conference; also a funeral service in the Montpelier 2nd ward over the remains of John Blaser who met death in the Pocatello Ry yards. He was run over and his head severed from his body. I also attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency and High Council held in the tabernacle building at 4:20 P.M. I spoke at all these meetings. I also met some of the brethren at Pres. Rich’s home in the evening. This has been a busy day. I spent about an hour with Sister Sarah J. Robinson Dunn in the evening.

19 December 1920 • Sunday

Montpelier.

Am well. Fair sleighing

I attended and spoke at three conference meetings and a stake priesthood meeting also a meeting with the Presidency, the H. Council and the Seventies in the stake the 114th & 79th quorums. I inaugurated the missionary work among non members in the stake.

I ordained one high priest and administered to 4 people while in Montpelier. Subjects treated by me [page break] during conference were:

Honor Parents & thus honor God. Sund 10 A.M. Character, Conjoint M.I.A. Sund evening Missionary work among non members at home. Gospel restoration, Mormonism consists of the Church, the gospel, principles, authority and the operations of the spirit. The perfections of the Church organization: &c &c.

20 December 1920 • Monday

I left Montpelier at 9 A.M. and arrived in Salt Lake City at 7 P.M. Elder Roy George of Montpelier gave me half of a cheese to bring home with me. I found my folks well.

21 December 1920 • Tuesday

I spent the forenoon in my office and on my way home to dinner my son George and I called at the Holy Cross Hospital & administered to a sister Sherwood who died a few minutes afterwards. In the afternoon Alice and I did Xmas shopping.

I received a letter this day from Pres. Heber C. Iverson of Portland, Ore. giving me the substance of the court record of the divorce proceedings of Chas. Tindale Murray and his wife. In Mother’s presence I talked to our daughter Edna who is keeping company with Mr. Murray. She read Bro. Iverson’s letter but declared that she did not believe Murrays wifes’ statements. All well.

Stormy day.

I assisted in setting apart and instructing missionaries. I set apart four brethren for Australia.

Attended my prayr Circle and did some Xmas Shopping.

23 December 1920 • Thursday

I attended regular weekly council meeting of the Presidency & the Twelve, from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.

Attended to office work and met callers, among whom, was Uncle Arnold D. Miller who had just returned from presiding over the Astralian Mission.

24 December 1920 • Friday

I attended a meeting of the B. of Mormon Committee and attended to other business connected therewith occupying the greater part of the day. Attended to Xmas shopping &c. Preparing.

25 December 1920 • Saturday

Christmas.

Nina, Orin and Dorothy were with us over night and for several days after.

Our unmarried children were at home except Ruby who was on night duty at the L.D.S. Hospital. She and all the other married children were with us to dinner in the afternoon. We had a nice Xmas tree and gifts and a general good time. Alice and I went with Orin & Nina and called [page break] on LeGrands family and at Lucenas and Mamies’. George & family were in Tooele with Nerva & Geo. L. and brought them in to the City arriving at 3 P.M. in time for dinner. We played Rook in the evening.

26 December 1920 • Sunday

Home.

About 12 in of snow.

I took 7 A.M. train for Morgan and arrived there at 10:10. I was met at the Ry Station by Pres. Heiner and we walked to the meeting house where we attended a meeting of the Presidency and High Council whom I addressed. We took dinner with Bp. Francis and attended Stake Priesthood and Officers meeting at 2 P.M. I also addressed that meeting for about 40 minutes with good liberty. I ordained two bishops, six Bp. Counselors, Stake Supt R. Classes and Counselor in the presidency of the High Priests’ quorum. A list of the ordinations is filed with the secretary Geo. F. Gibbs. I took 4:10 P.M. train and arrived in Salt Lake at 6:25 P.M. Nina & Orin still with us. We had a song service at home, Nina at the piano.

27 December 1920 • Monday

Went to my office as usual and attended a Book of Mormon committee meeting at 11 A.M. and with members of the committee went before the Presidency later in the day and presented [page break] recommendation to them as to the price at which the Book of Mormon shall be sold which is as follows:

28 December 1920 • Tuesday

I went to my office as usual in the morning.

This day I was presented, as a member of the Book of Mormon committee, with a copy of the new edition of the Book of Mormon in each of four kinds of binding. This by the First Presidency.

I had several callers during the day. Was in my office from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. Attended to some business out side and went down to my daughter Mamie’s where Mother, Oliver, Estella and Ray were and had super with them. I called on LeGrand & Ina & lunched with LeGrand on my way to Mamies. At Mamie’s I met Lucena & Nerva and their children. Mother & I accepted invitation of Pres Grant & wife and with others accompanied them to the theatre in the Social Hall. Clarence & Mamie took us from their house in Sugar House to the Show house. 29 December 1920 • Wednesday

There is a good lot of snow and the weather is just cold enough to hold it. I went to my office at 9 A.M., Arranged a committee meeting with A. W. Ivins, R. R Lyman and Willard Young and myself appointed by President Grant to investigate certain charges made by one Wm Purrett against the Presiding Bishopric and others, charging them with graft &c from the Church in construction of the Belvedere Apartments & other buildings & improvements. In referring to this committee, I shall call it the Investigation Committee. I set apart Karl Morgan Richards a missionary to the Netherlands.

Sister R. & I attended a reception in 1st Ward hall tendered the YMM & I & YLMI Assos. General Board members by the Mutual Officers of the Liberty Stake 8 P.M.

30 December 1920 • Thursday

Attended weekly council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Attended to business for Hugh J. Cannon and for my self out side

Geo. & family & Mother & I took supper with James Hood & family and spent the evening with them

31 December 1920 • Friday1

This day I set apart four missionaries to the Netherlands.

Uncle Arnold Miller called on me at my office and spent an [page break] [end of the twenty-first volume] hour or such a matter.

George & Edith, Joel & Georgina, Mother and I in Georges’ car went to Tooele leaving Salt Lake at 4:30 P.M. Nerva & George L. had invited some friends in and we spent a happy evening

Hyrum & Estella were there. We saw out the old year out and the New Year in and some of us did not retire until near 4 A.M.
