I spent an hour in my office in the morning and several in the afternoon. I was in our Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 3:15 P.M.

I attended a meeting of all the General Board members in the evening at the Bps Bldg.

We have had an enormous amount of snow and sleet fall during the past month.

I attended a meeting of the Twelve, the Seventies and Mission Presidents in the Temple from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. without adjournment. Spent some time at my office and received calls. I this day ordered eight tons of nut coal from the Martin Coal Co. @ 8.25 delivered plus 75¢ pr ton for sacking and carrying in or $9.00 per ton put in our basement. Payments to be made as follows, ten dollars per month until paid.

Mother Estella Ray and I went to the ward picture show in the evening and by request I offered prayr at the commencement.

Estella Lee and her daughter Emma came in from Tooele for Conference and they are staying at our home.

They came last night & her daughter Lucy came to-day.

I spent the day until 4 P.M. at my office. I went to the Strand show with Alice, her sisters Estella and Annie and her cousin Maggie Wilcox Manning. The show was from 5:30 to about 6:30 P.M.

Attended to some business at the bank.

Alice & I attended the Lpool Con. Reunion held in Barratt Hall in the evening.

I attended 8:30 A.M. R. Class Conference, 10 A.M. & 2 P.M. General Conference meetings and S.S. Union meeting in the evening.

Stormy weather.

I attended Conference meetings at 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. and the “Vision” Concert in the tabernacle in the evening. A Cantata.

I was the first speaker at the Conference this morning. I occupied about 23 minutes with fair liberty though I felt cramped for time.

My discourse and those of the brethren will appear in pamphlet form so I do not need comment on them here.

I attended 2 P.M. Conference meeting and the general priesthood meeting in the tabernacle at which the reported number present was 2416. Excellent instructions given by Pres. Grant and others.

This day I received deed & abstract to 120 acres of land recently purchased in Graham Co. Arizona. After meeting, Geo. LeGrand & Joel met me at our home and decided upon a policy to pursue regarding the working & improving of the land, provided it can be worked out.

I attended Special Priesthood meeting in the Assembly Hall from 10 A.M. to 12:30.

I went with Alice & her sister Annie down to our daughter Sarah’s and took dinner.

Attended Circle meeting and later a reception tendered the Bishops & others at Bps Building [page break] by the First Presidency.

8 April 1920 • Thursday

All well.

Fine day.

Mother, Joel & Edna went to Tooele in Joels car and attended the funeral services of Nettie Smith Atkin and returned in the evening except Edna who stayed there for a visit and Oliver who had been out there since a week ago to-day returned with the others.

I attended weekly Council meeting from 10 to 3:30 and worked in my office several hours.

Spent the evening at home.

9 April 1920 • Friday

Beautiful day.

I spent the day in my office. At noon hour I accompanied my son Joel in his car down on 14th So. St. where we administered to a sister Needham who was in bed with sore throat, fever &c. In the evening Mother and I and Ray, Clarence & Mamie & baby and Joel & his two boys went to the picture show in the ward. These shows are given under the management of the boy scouts of the ward and they are well patronized. The films are well censored. [page break]

I spent the forenoon at my office

Went shopping in the afternoon with Mother, Oliver and Estella. Bought suit for Oliver $32.50, his 16th birthday. Bought a hat for Estella $3.95

We five including Ray spent the evening at Lucena’s. Return home at 11 P.M.

11 April 1920 • Sunday

Home.

I attended the Ensign Stake High Priests’ meeting at 10:45 A.M. in 18th Ward house and offered the opening prayr.

Called on my Sister Nerva and family on my way home

Joel took me in his auto and Mother also to Aunt Nervas & return. Mother visited with my sister Nerva while I was at meeting.

Mother, Ruby, Edna, Oliver, Estella, Ray & I took dinner with Clarence and Mamie. We attended evening meeting in 27th Ward. Elder Richard R. Lyman was the speaker.

After meeting Mother & I rode down with Clarence and Mamie and got supper and from there went to LeGrand & Inas & had ice cream & cake. Geo & Edith brought us home in their Ford. Returned about 11:45 P.M. [page break]

This has been a fine day.

I spent the day at my office correcting work in the B. of M. i.e. marking a book to be later considered by a Committee of which I am chairman.

I retired early. All well.

13 April 1920 • Tuesday

I worked at my office. Set apart four missionaries. Held consultation with Jno. M. Mills on subject of his making an index for the Book of Mormon.:

Spent the evening at home with members of my family. Nina & Orin were with us.

Stormy day.

I spent the time at my office until 12 o clock and from 12 to 2 P.M. was in committee of B & M. Made ready and left on 4:40 train two hours late in company with Bro. W. A. Morton for St. Johns Stake via Barstow.

15 April 1920 • Thursday

On train.

Am well.

Had good night.

I spent the day reading mostly from “2,000 Gospel Quotations” and as I get better acquainted with the book I appreciate it the more. I shall be able to use it more than in the past. It was uncomfortably [page break] warm while crossing the California desert today. We were 2 hrs. late in reaching Barstow Calif. but on time to get No. 1 Santa Fee and continued journey East.

16 April 1920 • Friday

On train.

Am well

Had good night.

We were late reaching Winslow where we got breakfast at the Harvey Eating house. Here I wrote a letter to Alice and posted when we reached Holbrook at 11 A.M. 2 hrs. late. The mail stage had left for St. Johns an hour earlier and we were obliged to hire a man to drive us, Bro. W. A. Morton & me to Hunt, 210 miles for which we paid him $20.00 We here got M. C. Morgan, a son of John Morgan to take us on 20 miles to St Johns. The wind blowed hard so that the ride was unpleasant, but the roads were good as a rule.

Bro. Morton and I stayed at the home of Pres. Udall who was at the time in Phoenix on business pertaining to the building of the Lyman reservoir. He did not get home for conference.

17 April 1920 • Saturday

St. Johns Ariz.

Am well. Stormy day

Attended conference meetings at 10 and at 2 and priesthood meeting at 7:30 and spoke at all the meetings

The attendance was from St Johns almost exclusively and consequent not large. Cause, stormy weather [page break] and the fact that the flue has been prevalent here in St Johns of late and the people of other wards are afraid of it. Good spirit and instructions were had.

18 April 1920 • Sunday

Am well. Stormy & cold.

I attended 9 A.M. SS. officers meeting and 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. conference meetings and the evening conjoint meeting and Bro Morton and I spoke at all the meetings. We took dinner at the home of Pres. Chas. Anderson & between meetings visited and administered to the little daughter of Sister Peterson; to Bro. [blank] Gibbons and to Bro. John Plum and wife and daughter Bessie.

At evening meeting there were 200 present. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 40 min. with good Liberty on MIA work and the purpose of the organization, fashion &c. Advised married people on raising families.

After meeting I visited with Pres. & Sis. Udall & Bro. Morton until 11:30 P.M.

19 April 1920 • Monday

I spent the day at President Udalls’ visiting, considering stake conditions planning our work, writing letters &c. I wrote to Alice and to my daughter Nerva. I have had some headache to-day. Cold weather and [page break] large fireplace only in large room not conducive to health.

20 April 1920 • Tuesday

St. Johns.

I have some cold.

With Pres. David K. Udall & W. A. Morton I went to the home of James B. Patterson and blessed his little boy, James Bowman Patterson who has leakage of the heart. I also blessed Pres. Udall at his request. Bro. Morton and I went with Bro. Wm Sherwood 12 miles up to the Lyman dam and reservoir. At 11:15 attended Church Academy School and the time having been given to me, I occupied about 50 mins. with good liberty. Subject character defined- Power of thought in its formation.

High aims of L.D.S. Encouragement our boys have to study. We take our knowledge with us. High ideals. Knowledge necessary alike to Salvation and to Condemnation. Education which is of more worth and does not require the midnight lamp and the schoolroom. Overcome self and submit to conscience’s dictates.

Pres. Udall, Elder Morton & I lift St. Johns in Ford for Holbrook on the way to Bluewater at about 2:30 P.M. and arrived at about 7:00 P.M. [page break] It was a cold ride with the wind blowing hard. I took more cold. We three slept in the home of David K. Udall Jr.

21 April 1920 • Wednesday

Holbrook.

Cold no better Cold day.

Pres. Udall, Elder Morton and I left Holbrook Ariz. at 9 A.M. for Bluewater N.M. 145 miles East & arrived there at 2 P.M. We were met at the train by Branch President Frihoff P. Nielson and taken to his Brother’s Jos. F. Nielson & got supper. We attended a Priesthood meeting at 4 P.M. & there decided unanimously on Jos. Frederick Nielsen for Bishop.

At evening meeting he was sustained also counselors & clerk as follows: First Counselor Welcome O. Chapman, 2nd Counselor, Lewis Edward Lamb & Clerk, Frihoff B. Nielsen.

I ordained Jos. F. Nielsen a High Priest & Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Bluewater ward. I also set apart the Counselors, ordaining Bro Lamb a High Priest.

I was one of the speakers also. I stayed at Bp. Nielsons over night

Retired at mid night and slept cold. It was freeding cold.

22 April 1920 • Thursday

Bluewater N.M.

Pres Udall, W. A. M & I left for Holbrook on 6:18 No 9 train and arrived at noon. We were met at the station by a Bro. Wm‌ R. [page break] Stratton and wife in a new Ford and were taken, i.e. Elder M & I, to Snowflake in less than 2 hrs, Good roads, pleasant weather. We found beautiful Spring weather at Snowflake. Sunshining bright & warm, trees in leaf, grass green and the birds singing sweetly.

After dinner we administered to Sister Lulu Smith and went down town and administered to Brother Joseph Peterson.

I returned to Bro Samuel P. Smith’s home where I was staying and wrote up my journal for the past three days, wrote letters.

I wrote a letter home. and had sealed it up but a short time when word was received from home by letter from my wife dated Apr 17th

Ray had bad cold.

23 April 1920 • Friday

Snowflake

My cold no worse.

The weather is ideal.

I attended a devotional exercise at the Academy where Jos. Smiths’ vision was the theme. I occupied about 15 minutes on that subject.

Pres. S. F. Smith, Elder Morton and I went to the home of Davis S. Rogers and blessed Annie and Minnie Rogers. I took dinner at Pres. Flakes’ home. Attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency and High Council from 2 to 4. [page break]

Attended Prayer Circle meeting at 6:30 and a concert given by the Academy students at 8 P.M. Enjoyed the work of the day.

24 April 1920 • Saturday

Snowflake, Ariz.

I attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency and Bishops in the Academy building at 8:30 A.M. 10 Bps & 8 counselors present. Profitable meeting. I gave instructions.

At 10 A.M. meeting attendance was 338. Stake Population 2518. I occupied 50 minutes with good liberty on subject of Religion.

At 2 P.M. <394.> meeting I occupied 40 minutes. Subject Feel things. Read B. of M & feel that you are in their company. My experience as a Patriarch S. L. Lee blessing. The Savior’ suffering in the garden. The buried miners. Heaven & Hell. No whisperings but just conviction. The Lord helped me this day. I called at Jos. Peterson’s who is very ill and at his request Bro Fillerup and I administered to him. I found him all unstrung & nervous.

At the Priesthood and officer’s meeting in the evening, I attended and took part.

Attendance at 2 P.M. 394

I ordained John L. Fish a Bp. and set him apart to preside over the Lake Side Ward.

Horace Hansen ordained a [page break] High Priest and set apart 1st Counselor to Bp. Fish by myself. Walton E. Hall ordained a High Priest and set apart 2nd Counselor to Bp. Fish by myself.

This has been a full day of work.

25 April 1920 • Sunday

Snowflake, Ariz.

Am well.

I attended R. Class officers meeting and spoke at 9 A.M.

Attended 10:30 and 2 P.M. meetings and spoke at the former. At the evening meeting I gave the Baccalaureate Sermon to the graduating students of the Snowflake Academy, 15 in number the public present. I had good liberty and occupied 72 minutes.

Had many expressions of satisfaction in fact more I think than on any other occasion. One member of the faculty said she had heard several B. Sermons at the B.Y.U. but had never heard any thing better.

I attended a Seventies meeting at 4:30 and set apart 4 presidents of the 83d Quo of Seventy and ordained 17 Seventies and addressed those present on missionary work with good impress. What sent Dives to Hell.

What will become of us if we neglect the weightier matters of feeding the souls of men who are starving at our doors.

26 April 1920 • Monday

Snowflake Ariz.

All well.

I rode over to Taylor ward 3 miles distance between 8 & 9 A.M. with a Brother Willis in his Ford. Pres S. F. Smith, wife and children went along and left their daughter Alice there to teach school.

I attended the Academy devotional exercises and spoke briefly.

Bro. Morton & I took dinner at the home of a Sister Reucher. Pres. S. F. Smith & I administered to a Sister Gardner. Elder Morton & I left Snowflake at 2:30 P.M.with Bro. & Sister Owens in their car for Holbrook 35 miles distant where we arrived at about 4 P.M. without special incident. We went to the home of Bro. Willard Farr who is temporarily presiding at Holbrook. We administered to Bro & Sis Owens boy who had been recently circumcised. A public meeting having been called we attended and Bro Morton & I were the speakers. 140 in attendance, about half outsiders. I spoke first and occupied about 50 min. with good liberty. Patriarch Joseph Richards was present and said he had never heard a discourse where more ground was covered and better done. Many expressed their delight with the meeting. May all glory be given to God. I spoke as to strangers to the gospel and shared our faith in God, preexistence [page break] origin of the gospel, purpose of it, what we have to do besides confessing Jesus, &c.

At the close of the meeting a Mr. Wm G. Mayfield, State Senator from So. Dakota engaged in the oil business near Holbrook sent up $20.00 for the Arizona Temple.

Bro Morton and I took train at 12:26 A.M. for home.

27 April 1920 • Tuesday

On train.

Am well.

While on the train between Holbrook and Barstow, I wrote up my journal, penciled out several letters, did some studying &c.

We had a wait of nine hours at Barstow from 4 P.M. to 12:25 A.M. I got a hair cut & shave.

Wrote letters to Pres. Samuel F. Smith, to Pres. Willard B. Farr., and Mr. William G. Mayfield the latter of Holbrook who gave $20.00 last evening for the Arizona Temple Fund.

The weather has been warm to-day. My health is excellent I weighed to-day 185½ lbs.

28 April 1920 • Wednesday

Bro Morton & I had to sit up all night as we could not get a berth.

We got train out of Barsstow at 2 P.M. and rode all day and night. [page break]

29 April 1920 • Thursday

Arrived home from Arizona at 6 A.M. Cleaned up, shaved, bathed &c and went to my office, thence to our weekly meeting which lasted until 4 P.M.

Did some work at my office and then came home and finished some writing

Mother, Geo., Edith & I accompanied Joel Georgina to a show in the evening.

I leave for Snowville, at 7 A.M. tomorrow.

30 April 1920 • Friday

Home.

All well.

I took 7 A.M. train for Tremonton Utah where I was met at the station by President Jonathan C Cutler’s daughter Zina in a New Ford car. She took me to Snowville a distance of 40 miles. We arrived there about 3 P.M. I stayed at the home of Pres. Cutler while in Snowville.

We had stormy cold weather. 80/100 of 1st of wet fell during our night.
