I have good health and exceeding peace. The country is beautiful & the weather delightful and my journey has been most pleasant thus far. I had a wonderful nights’ sleep last night in an upper berth. I must have slept nine or ten hours, catching up lost sleep before leaving home. From Omaha on [to] New York, I have a lower berth.

On train going East. Arrived at Chicago at 7:46 A.M. and was met by Pres. Pond and with him went to Mission headquarters & had breakfast. We went down town to the Ry Station & went through one of the large banks and the New Board of Trade Building, one of the largest in the City. The Station is in the heart of business Center. I took Nickle Plate train at 11:00 A.M. for Buffalo thence by Lacawana Ry. train to New York.
Pres. Pond said he would be glad to send two of the Elders home with me by Auto from Detroit and would have them join me there, if Pres. Hart did not care to send two of his Elders with me.
I wrote to Joel requesting him to send to the Co. at Detroit a certified check for the amount of the car’s cost and an order for the car so that it will be ready by the 17th or 18th of June, and mailed the letter in the middle of the afternoon. [page break]
I wrote to Mother and mailed it before reaching New York.
30 May 1930 • Friday
Memorial Day
Arrived at Buffalo about 4:00 A.M. Coming through Cleveland last night before retiring. I saw a beautiful spectacle of lights, a city on the hills. This morning I saw a part of Buffalo from my berth. From 4:00 AM to 3:30 P.M. I rode from Buffalo to N York and the coun[tr]y was beautiful. Rolling hills covered with grass & hardwood trees interspersed with farms, homes &c. The autos and auto roads interested me. The rivers & natural parks were fascinating.
I, for want of proper direction, detrained at Hoboken station and Pres. J. H. Moyle went to one of the other stations. of which there are three & we missed each other. I later talked with him on the Phone. I went to the Rialto show, after walking out to the East end of 42nd St. where it touches the river and west a number of blocks. As I was walking west on 42nd St. The Sun was setting apparently at the west end of the street and it made a picture I would like to have, photographed. I took train at 10:45 P.M. for Boston.
31 May 1930 • Saturday
Am well.
On train for Boston. I awoke at 4:00 A.M. the sun just rising in the East about as pretty a spectacle as that of last evening about 7:40 as it was setting. The scenery between N. York & Boston is much the same as that west of New York. There are, however, some [page break] large factory cities enroute. Arrived in Boston at 6:05 A.M. Changed stations and got a train out for Portland at 7:40 A.M. Arrived in Portland, Maine, at 10:40 A.M. Pres Hart got off the same train, he having boarded the train about 8:00 A.M. and I did not know it. I was not expecting it but we met at the depot and together went to the Lafayette Hotel which w[as] made our staying place while in Portland. We here went over our schedule of meetings and decided to conclude my visit with a meeting in Chatham which is but about 55 mile from Detroit Wed. evening June 18th and go to Detroit early Thu. morning to visit the DeSoto factory in the forenoon, and if possible leave for home by auto Thu. afternoon. I wrote Pres Pond at Chicago telling him my plans as he is expecting to meet me at Detroit and with me go through the factory, also he is to have one or two Elders there released to go home with me. I am notifying my folks at home of my plans. Wrote to Mother and to LeGrand at Glendale, Cal.
Called at the headquarters of the missionaries, where we met seven, two who are local and the others from outside. Arranged for our meetings to-morrow 9—2—7:30 The Elders will hold street meetings to-night. It being raw cold weather, Pres. Hart suggested that it would be unwise for him & me to attend the Street meetings to-night. In this I heartily concur, feeling that I might easily contract a cold which might disable me or be a serious handicap through out my visit in this mission.
Two Successful meetings were held on the <Street.> [page break]
