All usually well.

Some colds & minor ailments. I spent the forenoon at home and afternoon attended to some business down town and attended a R. Class Gen. Bd. meeting at 3:30 P.M., a M.I.A. meeting at 5:00 P.M. and my Circle meeting at 6:30 P.M. 22 in attendance. Later George, Joel, Clarence & wives & children came in and we had a home evening meeting, singing, reciting, games, refreshments &c.

Folks better

Pleasant day [p. 43]

I attended weekly Council meeting from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. I spent the afternoon reading, writing &c. Received letters from LeGrand & Ina in Holland. I wrote a six paged letter, letter size to him. In the evening Mother & I, Sarah & Lill went to the Barratt Hall and attended a lecture by Dr. McLaren, a Humorist. A nautiating affair.

Pleasant day.

I took the Interurban car at 10:00 A.M. for Logan and got as far as Dewy and learned that we could not get beyond Collinston on account of the drifting snow so after waiting 2¼ hrs. got a chance to return to Ogden where I got train at 5:45 P.M. O.L.S. and reached Logan at 8:30 P.M. I remained over night at Regas & had good visit with him, Ruby & Lucena. Phoned Pres. Jos. J. Geddes of Preston.

I took 9:57 A.M. car to Preston and got to 10:30 A.M. meeting just after second song. I was one of the speakers and occupied 40 min. [p. 44] Subject, missionary work. Att. 400. Elder R. S. Wells joined me at noon.

At 2:00 P.M. meeting the attendance was 825. I occupied 20 min. Subj. Faith necessary but not all sufficient. I took dinner at the home of Counselor Taylor Nelson and staid at night at Pres. Jos. S. Geddes’.

5 March 1916 • Sunday

Preston.

Am well.

Stormy day.

At 10:30 meeting the attendance was 1131. I occupied 30 minutes Subject. The mission work of the Church auxiliaries.

At 2:00 P.M. meeting I occupied 40 min, Subj: Faith in God necessary and how it may be had.

Between meetings we visited and inspected the $40,000. Gymnasium. I fasted until after the afternoon meeting and broke fast at Coun. James Johnson’s. I set apart two High Counselors, Junius C. Jensen of Preston H.C. and Ezra F. Woolley of Mapleton, alt H. Counselor.

Had an enjoyable conference and being thoroughly tired I decided to come home. Sister Foss of the Y.L.M.I.A. had come up on noon train and had not spoken & she would remain to night meeting. [p. 45]

Bro. Wells & I returned on Interurban reaching Salt Lake at 10:05 P.M. While in Preston I had an extended talk with Pres. Geddes on the subject of life insurance he being an agent of the Beneficial Life Co. I am considering seriously the taking of more insurance.

I spent the day studying life insurance.

In the evening I accompanied Pres. Lyman down to Pioneer Stake hall and attended stake priesthood meeting. I occupied ten minutes time which was allotted to me and before the meeting i.e. in the meeting I assisted in setting apart the bishoprics of Pleasant Green and Magna wards. I was mouth in ordaining Arthur E. Vaughn a High Priest and set him apart a member of the High Priests quorum and First Counselor Bp. Geo. A Little of Pleasant Green ward.

I ordained John A Bowden a High Priest and a Bishop and set him apart a member of the High Priests quorum and to preside [p. 46] over the Magna ward as its bishop. I ordained Niel A. Oakeson a High Priest and set him apart Second Counselor to Bp. Bowden.

Beautiful day.

I spent the forenoon at my desk and in the afternoon Alice, Ray & I went to the Salt Lake Theatre and saw “The Birth of a Nation” in picture movies. A performance of three hours duration and a wonder in that line of productions. We visited with Joel & George & families at George’s home in the evening.

Attended to some business down town. Sat up until 1:30 A.M. figuring on life insurance. My folks none of them, i.e. Mother, George and Joel think I should take more insurance, it is so expensive at my age. I have decided to let it drop for the present.

Recorded temple work, 60 endowments done in Logan temple.

I spent the forenoon at home and in the afternoon attended to some [p. 47] business at the Genealogical Society office; attended Y.M.M. Reading Course Committee meeting a book from the Committee to read, “What Men Live By.” Attended Y.M.M. General Board meeting and my Circle meeting. 23 men present.

Warmest day of the year so far.

This is the 34th anniversary of the wedding day.

I wrote to my son LeGrand in Holland. Attended weekly Council meeting. Had a number of Mother’s folks here from Farmington to supper and to spend the evening. Her nephew Blaine Steed left on 11:15 P.M. train for Vancouver B.C. thence to New Zealand on a mission. I gave him a good belt in which to carry his money. Retired late.

A letter from LeGrand of Feb 4th a lock of Marian Louise’s hair enclosed on golden color. I spent the day at my desk. [p. 48]

11 March 1916 • Saturday

Am well.

In company with Andrew Jensen, I took 7:30 A.M. train for Tooele where we were met at Ry Station by the Stake presidency and taken in auto to Grantsville in time for a 9:30 A.M. meeting of the Presidency & High Council. I talked to them upon the topics presented & read to them some stake statistics. Meet with stake officers at 11:00 A.M. 165 in attendance. After the opening exercises Bro. Jensen occupied the time.

At 2:00 P.M. meeting held in the 1st ward meeting house the attendance was 235 Stake Population 4400. I occupied about 45 minutes with deliberation but good liberty Subject. Church wide contest in religious activities and Missionary work. After the meeting, I assisted by others administered Sister Sophia? Eliason. Took dinner with brother [blank] Hale. I rode up to Tooele with Bro. C. R. McBride and spent the evening mostly at Estella’s and Hyrum & I administered to her a blessing before I left. I staid over night at my daughter Nerva’s. [p. 49]

Fine day.

I went to Grantsville 12 miles, with Pres. C. R. McBride arriving there in time for the 10:00 A.M. conference meeting which was by my suggestion held in the Opera House, the sunday schools of both wards being invited. Attendance 390. I was one of the speakers and occupied 20 min. Subj.— Obligation to the Lord by sacred covenant of the Sacrament. If we are ashamed of Him or his gospel He who is the mediator will be ashamed of us. There is a spirit in man and the spirit of God giveth it understanding. Conscience voice should be obeyed &c.

I took dinner with August K. Anderson. At 2:00 P.M. Meeting held in the Opera House I was one of the speakers and occupied 45 minutes. Subject. Be ye doers of the word. We know better than we do. Read and quoted Matt 7:21–end. Luke 16:19–31, James 1:21–22 &c. Use men inactive at present &c. Attendance 374.

At 10:00 A.M. meeting the sacrament was administered and 2:00 P.M. meeting the authorities were sustained. After meeting, brother Jensen & I were driven to Morris station in [p. 50] bro. [blank] Eliason’s car and took train for home arrived in Salt Lake at 6:00 P.M. and home at 6:30 P.M. Folks all at Sunday School Conference meeting. Geo & Joel & their families called in after meeting.

Mother went to bed suffering from pain in back, neck & head and grew worse I administered to her & she got better & later had severe pain in back of neck drawing her head back giving us quite a startle fearing meningitis.

Mother got up at 11:00 A.M. but feeling very poorly.

Cloudy & cooler.

I wrote up my diary & other records to date from notes. Spent the day at home and in the evening I was called into Pres. Lyman’s home for council about my sons with a view to making one of them a bishop some time.

I studied life insurance all day Frank Mosley of Beneficial Life called on me.

Received 40 names of females from Salt Lake Temple endowed females. [p. 51] Recorded work done. Wrote recorder & enclosed 5 sheets 100 names of females and my check of $5.00 contributions to the temple.

Beautiful day.

I took out $5,000. life insurance this forenoon with the Continental Life Ins. Co. Commercial Policy. I took an insurance for five months $5000. for which I paid $38.75. The date of the main policy will be Aug 15th and all premiums fall due on that day of August in the succeeding years.

Mr. Bradstreet Miller wrote me up and volunteered to allow me on first Premium 20% or $44.56 I paid for these policies by giving my note for $261.55 payable in five months 5% int. after maturing and had $44.56 indorsed on back of note. Took receipt for $261.55/xx and signed application. I have made an extended examination into different insurance policies of the Beneficial Life & Continental Life and consider this the best. Both companies wrote the same policy but do not push this policy.

I attended M.I.A. Gen. Bd. Meeting [p. 52] and my Circle meeting and Alice and I spent an hour with Geo. & Edith, Joel and wife also present.

All fairly well.

Beautiful day.

Attended regular weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 2:40. Pres. Jos F Smith returned this morning from the Hawaiian Islands and was present with us. This is the warmest day of the season so far I think.

About 5:00 P.M. Oliver ran against a wire stretched tight at Droubay’s and cut his upper lip just under the nose so that I called Dr. Stephen who put three stitches in it. Dr. Gill assisted him.

A brother John Kest and Miss Catherine [blank] Dutch friends, called & spent the evening staying until eleven o’clock.

17 March 1916 • Friday

In company with Bp. O. P. Miller. I took 8:15 A.M. R.G. train for Richfield Sevier Stake where we arrived at 4 P.M. We were met by Pres. R. D. Young and taken to Pres. Christensen’s home where we made our stay. Attended a [p. 53] meeting of the Presidency & H. Council in the evening and gave instructions and presented to them statistics of the Sevier Stake.

18 March 1916 • Saturday

A little rain but not enough to lay the dust.

At 10:00 A.M. Conference meeting I was one of the speakers and occupied the concluding 15 min following Bp. Miller. The tremendous responsibility on one who substitutes for God’s plan of Salvation one of man’s making. “He that climbeth up any other way is a thief and a robber.” Attendance 197.

At 2:00 P.M. meeting I occupied 35 minutes. Subj. “Be ye doers of the word.” &c. Attendance 360.

At 4:15 meeting of Presidency H.C. & Bps. I addressed them.

In the evening, I addressed the Sunday School workers at a meeting & social held in First ward. “Saving of Souls.”

19 March 1916 • Sunday

Am well

Fine day.

Attended 9:00. A.M. S.S. Convention meeting at 2nd ward house. At 10:30 two meetings held. Attendance 408 above 193 below 601. [p. 54] I addressed the meeting in the upper room for 30 minutes. Subject. Marriage continued. At afternoon meetings the attendance was 827 at both meetings. I addressed the one held in the upper room for 35 minutes. Subject. What are we living for and seeking after? Answered. Happiness how obtained? &c. Good liberty. May the Lord be praised.

After meeting I ordained two High Priests as follows:

John Wm Ward and Andrew Naisbet Laurson both of Richfield.

At evening meeting the house was filled and many who came went away because there was no room. 416 counted. The choir sang, “Earth with her ten thousand flowers,” and I took that song for my text and spoke first occupying about 45 minutes. Evidences of the existence and love of God. Nature, tradition, revelation, by hearing the preaching, by doing His will, by seeking &c. Elders Cannon and Miller followed.

Retired at 11:00 P.M. each night. [p. 55]

I returned home from Richfield and in the evening wrote up my journal, looked over my mail &c.

21 March 1916 • Tuesday

All well.

Beautiful day.

I spent the forenoon at home at my desk and in the afternoon took Oliver & Ray to the barber’s and we three were shingled. I took Oliver to the Doctor’s office and had the stitches taken out of his lip just under the nose. The news papers furnish much reading now a days on account of the European war, the Mexican war and our relations with these countries. I today gave order for my subscription to the Herald Republican to commence tomorrow morning @ 15c per wk.

Mother, Geo. & Edith, Joel & wife & I attended Wilks Theater at night. “The Law of the Land.”

Fine weather.

Attended M.I.A. Reading Course Committee meeting from 10: to 2: Prof. Howard Driggs spoke to us. [p. 56] Received from Logan temple two sheets of names females of the Gill family finished endowment work. I recorded same

Attended M.I.A. Bd. & Circle meetings. Took supper with my son Joel. Received letters from my son LeGrand in Holland. Wrote letters &c.

23 March 1916 • Thursday

All well.

Snowed most all day but snow melted as it fell on ground.

Attended regular Council meeting from 10:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Obtained sheets of finished sealing work from the temple and recorded same. Wrote Pres. R. D. Young & Counselors of Sevier Stake reporting my recommendations to the Council that if they proceed at once to build a Stake tabernacle along the lines I suggested while down there last week & that same met with favor of the President & members of the Council.

These are anxious times Fire floods, war & rumor of wars every where afloat. I do not mention these things often in my journal. History will [p. 57] reveal the facts better than I can.

I made paths in the morning & when you consider that we had about 14" of heavy snow I means some work. Took a bath after it and spent the day reading &c.

Fine day.

I went down town and attended to some business in forenoon. The Continental Life could not live up to the promises of their agent, Bradstreet Miller and furnish this Commercial Policy such as I had made application for so I gave them back the receipt they gave me for first premium and received in return my note.

R. S. Wells representing the Mutual Life of N.Y. called to see me about Life Ins. and spent about an hour. Later one Ambrose B. Kesler representing the Metropolitan Life of N.Y. called and talked life ins. His company has an attractive policy similar to the Commercial Policy of the Beneficial [p. 58] Life but participating.

In the afternoon I went down town and assisted Alice in the purchase of a best dress &c.

I attended the 9:00 A.M. Priesthood class meeting and S. School of 27th Ward. Attended 2:00 P.M. meeting of Ensign stake officers in 18th ward house. Attended 27th ward conference in the evening 6 to 8 o’clock. Alice & I spent a couple of hours at my son George’s & took supper with him and family. A busy day.

I spent the day at home working at my desk all day & evening.

I remained home studying and writing at my desk.

Received letters from LeGrand & from Ruby in Logan and answered both in the evening. The past two days I have put in much time & work arranging statistics of the stakes in Directory for comparison. [p. 59]

Spent most of the day at home and at my desk.

Attended YMM Gen. Bd meeting and my Circle meeting and the Restoration by Cecil Gates & Company. A fine entertainment. Oratio.

Cold and some sleet fell.

I attended regular weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to about 1:00 P.M.

I spent some time in the afternoon with Ambrose B. Kesler agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co of N.Y. one of the largest Ins. Cos in the world if not the largest. Outstanding Ins. $3,196,491,344. I have about decided to take a policy with this company if I can pass a satisfactory Medical examination, which I believe I can. I have made a thorough study and believe I know which policy is most suited to my needs & wishes. [p. 60]

I went down town in forenoon and attended to some business. I also attended to some business by phone. Still studying Life Insurance. I made application for $10,000. policy with the Metropolitan Life of N.Y. through its agent Ambrose B. Kesler. I had a medical examination at my home by the Company’s examiner Dr. Bowers. Form of policy applied for Commercial

Amount of policy $10,000.

Annual Premium 445.70

Participating policy.

High Loaning privilege.

Alice and I attended a banquet held in the 20th ward amusement hall the guests of the Ensign Stake Presidency & H.C. A splendid affair.
