I attended to the duties of my office as president of the temple including the marrying of a number of couples and attended what I was able to do of a meeting of the Twelve, the Seventy and the Mission Presidents which continued from 9 A.M. to nearly six P.M. with an hour and a half recess.
Excused Sister [first and last names redacted] of [ward name redacted] ward from the temple because she confessed her love for a married man and his love for her and their intimate relations causing adverse comment to a wide extent. Estella Lee, Hyrum & Grant took supper with us.
2 April 1921 • Saturday
I spent an hour or two in my office, attended to some outside business and went to the temple where I attended to some business and was occupied with temple business. In the evening I attended the commemorative meeting [page break] of my father’s birth 100 years ago, in the 20th ward house. I was the first speaker. Pres. Grant & Pres Ivins also spoke also F. S. & C C Richards. Refreshments were served and dancing indulged in.

I attended 8 A.M. Religion Class meeting in Barret Hall the regular conference meetings in the Tabernacle at 10 and 2 oclock. I was one of five speakers at the 2 P.M. meeting and occupied 20 min. Subject. Our responsibility to preach the gospel to the world and to those who come among us and to obtain genealogies of our dead and do their work for them. If we neglect to do this service, like Dives we will reproached when we go beyond and that will be hell and torment. Recited in conclusion “A Little Parable” I made the cross &c. After this meeting I went down to my daughter Sarah’s and administered to her two children who have whooping cough. Attended evening S.S.M. Conference. Attended meeting of Temple Presidents, recorders &c. at noon.

I attended Special Priesthood Meeting in the Assembly Hall at 10 A.M., and general Conference meeting at 2 P.M. and general <Tabernacle> Priesthood meet <Council>ing <The Workers> at 7 P.M.

6 April 1921 • Wednesday
Attended two sessions of Conference and an entertainment, by the Presidency given in the Bishop’s Building in the evening at which Sister Richards was also. She and I met Sister Grundy at my office and I took them to dinner to ZC.M.I. After the entertainment I met Dr. Tindell at my home for the first time. Ruby had accompanied him, Murray and Edna to a show.
7 April 1921 • Thursday
I attended and spoke at the 8 A.M. temple meeting. Attended regular council meeting from 10 A.M. to about 5 P.M. except for adjournment to lunch and while I was marrying a number of couples and sealing some couples.
At our council meeting it was decided that the old form of ordaining be used in the temple and elsewhere. I was also decided that we disorganize the temple choir at once.
A decision was also made that the Twelve Disciples held the Apostleship i.e. we so believe.
I am happy in my work at the temple. [page break]
I remained late in the temple and wrote to John Cummard of Mesa. Ariz. asking him to contribute to the aid of Bro Wm Morten to go upon a mission.
Wrote to John W Tate & his wife Elizabeth Tate a call to labor in the temple a year without pay.
8 April 1921 • Friday
Attended the temple meeting as usual and after the meeting Elder Jos. F. Smith and I met with the temple choir members, thanked them for their faithful services of the past and released them with our blessing. Congregational singing will be engaged in exclusively. Bro Goodman will continue to lead without pay after this month and Sister Davis will continue to be the organist. By instructions from the First Presidency given yesterday while in Council meeting. I instructed the brethren of the temple to eliminate from the Ceremony of ordination (“We confer upon you the holy Melchisedek Priesthood”) inserted by order of Pres. Jos. F. Smith. The old form is to be made uniform.
Attended to my usual work at the temple and interviewed several people on special subject, that of their attitude toward the practice of plural marriage. I spent the evening at home.

10 April 1921 • Sunday
I attended priesthood meeting in the 27th ward at 9 A.M. and in the H.P. department I took part in the lesson. Attended and spoke at the Stake High Priests’ meeting in the 18th ward at 10:30 A.M. Attended the fast meeting in the 27th ward at 2 P.M. and made the opening remarks by request. Filled an appointment at the sacramental meeting of the 16th ward at 6:30 P.M. being the speaker. I occupied about 70 minutes with good liberty of thought & speech. Subject. Our Knowledge of pre-existance enables us to understand what the world does not, the universal Fatherhood of man and the brotherhood of man—The blessing of that principle. We love and serve our parents & brothers & sisters better than strangers. The knowledge of pre-existance enables us to understand how that the gospel had its origin before the earth was formed. Other religions were made later by man. One only and this the one. George with his car took me, Mother and his family down and back. This has been a full day. [page break]

I went to the temple as usual in the morning, calling at my office 47 East S T. on the way as usual. Was busy all day. at the temple until 6 P.M. Spent the evening at home. Had ward teachers and other company.
12 April 1921 • Tuesday
We held our first temple without a choir this morning.
Am working with Bro. D M McAllister on records trying to get uniformality of ordinances, decisions &c. with a view to having the Presidency pass on our suggestions and have them go out to all the temples.
This day I learned of the recent appointment of my son-in-law Geo. L. Tate as Bishop of Inkom Ward, Pocatello Stake. To-day we had Bros. Lambert & Nunn before us to settle a difficulty which has been existing between them for some time. They became reconciled & asked one another’s forgiveness and Bro Nunn broke down & cried. Bros Davis & Christensen were with me and others as witnesses.
We also had an interview in my room with Sister Nillie Taylor widow of John W. Taylor who made quite a preachment and declared her loyalty to President Grant and after I had explained the three classes, the valient, the neutral and the rebellious, she said that while she had felt that she sustained the authorities she now believes she was among [page break] the neutral. She hoped to be among the valient in the future.
It was nearly 7 P.M. when I left the temple. I spent the evening at home
Bro. & Sis. Von Langefledt spent the evening with us.

Attended to temple duties as usual.
Attended Mutual & R Class Bd meetings & my Circle. Settled differences between Bros Hacket & Lyons &c. Retired early.

Attended to temple duties and my council meeting which lasted from 10 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Took Mother and Nina to the Empress in the evening.
15 April 1921 • Friday
I spent the day at the temple as usual, a busy day. Performed a variety of ordinances, answered many questions and had some investigations viz. Bro Hussey, Lillian & Marian Halstead.
I formulated a pledge of loyalty to the Church & authorities and to their attitude towards plural marriage for temple workers to sign.
Wrote letter calling Sister James Maxwell to labor in the temple without pay or checks &c.
Arranged to call Bro. Brough of Bountiful as a temple worker for a year or longer without pay. He was consulted and agreed to it. [page break]
16 April 1921 • Saturday
I spent the forenoon at the Presidents’ office. Attended to business pertaining to temple and while there Pres Grant brought up the case of M. J. Wells and the possible effects of his being employed by the church, upon others of his class. Spent the afternoon at the temple at my desk.
In the evening Alice & I visited Hyrum & Estellas home as they have just moved in Tuesday 12th from Tooele. Retired early.
17 April 1921 • Sunday
Accompanied by my wife, Prest. C. H. Hart & wife, I left for Ogden on the 8 A.M. Bamburger line to attend Weber Stake Conference. We were met at the Station by Pres Geo. Browning who chaperoned us while in Ogden. We took dinner with him. We both spoke at both 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. meetings. I had good liberty and spoke upon the subject of missionary work among outsiders in the stakes, Temple work and qualifications necessary and Christs work of love & mercy, inspired by the choir singing Christs last seven words. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”. This as one of them.
We returned on 4:30 P.M. car and Alice & I went down to our daughter Sarahs, later Clarence & family called for us in car and took [page break] us home. They had Orin & Nina with them and they stayed the evening.
18 April 1921 • Monday
I spent a busy day at the temple. Considered with the workers many questions pertaining to our work looking towards improvement. I finished reading the Temple Historical Record also. and read anew all the temple instructions we have of record. Spent the evening at home with company, Lucena & Nina & their children. Joel & Georgina called and took Lucena & children to their home in Highland Park and Mother & I accompanied them.
19 April 1921 • Tuesday
Leaving home at 7:15 I rode down town with Joel and went to my office 2/3, thence to the temple.
Presided at morning meeting in the temple as usual and attended in setting apart a company of missionaries and Pres. Roberts & I instructed them. I presided at that meeting.
At 4 P.M. special meeting of Temple workers held in the annex at which Prests. Grant & Clawson were present & spoke, I presided and also occupied about 15 min with good freedom.
I took 6:30 P.M. train for Ogden where I attended a service in the 13th Ward laying a monogram [page break] stone in their meeting house now being constructed. I was one of the speakers. Returned home after 11 P.M.
At the meeting 4 P.M. President Grant spoke of President Lund and his kind, charitable disposition & said, “Bro. Richards possesses these qualities to a greater extent than any of the rest of us. That is why he was appointed to succeed President Lund.” I regard this as a great compliment and a stimulus to me to try to make his statement true for the future.
20 April 1921 • Wednesday
I attended to the duties of the temple as usual.

I set apart Sister Robison 2nd Counselor to Sister Clarasa Williams in the General Presidency of the Reliefsocieties and as Board members Sister Susie Y. Gates, Sister Lillian Cameron, and Sister Preston D. Richards, These blessings were taken verbatim. I listened to Bro P J Jensen read a paper he has been years preparing on Cycology & religion which required about 40 minutes. Attended Circle meeting and later met members of the Liberty Stake Presidency & Elder R R Lyman at the home of Bro Mulhausen with our wives & took supper and considered stake officers, Elder Lyman & I having been appointed to attend the Liberty Stake Conference next Sunday. Attended to the temple work as usual doing the sealings for the living including marrying & sealing children to parents.
Attended regular council meeting from 10 to 1 o’clock. Spoke at funeral services of Bp Alfred Solomon in 22nd ward at 2 P.M.
Alice went through the temple with Bro & Sis. Von Langefeldt and I assisted them through the veil and married the couple for time and eternity. In the evening Alice and I attended the Tabernacle concert & heard Madam Alda, Soprano.
I called at Pres. Grants’ office and presented six names to be invited to labor in the temple and they were approved. I also received his approval to set apart those persons called during Pres. Lunds time who have not been set apart, sixty in number.

I was busy at the temple all day except about an hour or two spent in the President’s office
Took supper at my daughter Ninas’ and gave her a blessing as she is approaching time of confinement.
23 April 1921 • Saturday
I spent most of the day at the temple. Wrote six or eight letters &c. At 8 P.M. I attended a Stake Priesthood Meeting of Liberty Stake in 2nd ward house at which [page break] there were 473 present. I spoke about 35 minutes on the subject of vitalization of the quorums of Priesthood and their members and how to get a more efficient ministry.
Elder R. R. Lyman also spoke.
24 April 1921 • Sunday
I met the Presidency of Liberty Stake at Bureau of Information before going to the Conference of that stake at 10 A.M. in the Assembly Hall. Elder R. R. Lyman with us. He spoke about 15 minutes and the time was taken and I did not speak in that meeting. At the 2 P.M. meeting in the Tabernacle Elder R R Lyman & I were the speakers. I occupied 25 minutes Subject. Effect of a good example on those who are investigating the gospel. The faithful ones of a quorum having this thought in view as well as the welfare of the quorum members the members should labor with delinquent members &c.
At 8 P.M. I attended meeting in the 3d ward the 8th ward people having been invited to be present. The house was well filled and some were standing.
I occupied 55 minutes with good liberty thought and expression. The Lord helped me. I spoke of the Gospel, defined it. What it is designed to accomplish. [page break] It should be studied as one studies mathematics. Understand the rudimentary principles first. What a proper understanding of Preexistance means in the solution of difficult questions
1— Father hood of God & brotherhood of man
2— To what we may attain (Godhood)
3— The origin of the gospel
4— The fallacies of Re-incarnation and Darwin theory of evolution.
5— The state of those who have died.
6— Mans true evolution.
After meeting I met Mother at Sarahs and Joel and I administered to her children. Both have whooping cough and George R. has tonsillitis.
25 April 1921 • Monday
Called at my office 213 on my way to the temple. Left home at 7:30 A.M. after having prayres and a good breakfast. Wrote up journal &c.
Aunt Emeline B. Wells died to-day, 92.
Spent some time at the Presidencies Office.
Left temple for home 6:20 P.M. Attended teachers training class meeting in 27th ward in the evening and by special arrangements I addressed the ward teachers and missionary corps about 25 min on ward teaching work and missionary work:
26 April 1921 • Tuesday
Left home on 7:20 car and went [page break] directly to the temple. Attended opening meeting, answered questions and assisted by Bro Albert W. Davis I set apart nineteen 20 regular temple workers. Bro. Christensen assisted me to bless & set apart Bro Richard Home after Bro Davis went home.
I spent the evening at home.

I went to the temple as usual
Attended the meeting and to the marrying, answered many questions and set apart seventeen of the brethren and nine of the sisters as regular workers in the temple assisted by Albert W. Davis. A full day’s work.
Sister Clara Grundy Cooper came from Logan to the City to take a job I have for her at Hotel Utah and is staying with us.
28 April 1921 • Thursday
I went to the temple and presided at the temple meeting as usual.
I did some ordaining, marrying and setting apart of temple workers. Attended weekly Council meeting of the Presidency and the Twelve from 10 A.M. to 3:30 except while attending to the marrying. Spent the evening at home except an hour spent at my son Georges’ home while he cut my hair and Ray’s.
29 April 1921 • Friday
Went to the temple as usual.
I had the unpleasant duty to [page break] perform of requesting one of our young sister workers to discontinue her labors as an ordinance worker on account of the objection of some to her. I presented the matter to Pres Grant and he approved.
I attended the funeral services of Sister Emeline B. Wells held in the large tabernacle. I judge that there were about 6,000 present. The services & burial were very satisfactory. I made ready and left Salt Lake on the 11:30 train for Cassia Stake, Oakley, to attend the Conference.
30 April 1921 • Saturday
I arrived at Oakley at about 1 P.M. was met by Pres. Jack & taken to his home to dinner thence to meeting where I was one of the speakers & occupied 60 minutes. Told my experiences on a mission and in my early farm life calculated to encourage the people who are coming up through much tribulation. We are sustained by that which we hope to attain in the future and for which we are striving. The lesson applies to our religious life as well.
I spent about 2½ hours with the Stake Presidency and the Presidents of the 78th quorum of Seventy trying to settle differences and effect a reconciliation and was successful to the extent of clearing the Stake Presidency. In the evening I attended the Seventies meeting where 30 elders were accepted as quorum members to be [page break] presented to the Conference tomorrow morning and later to be ordained.
I addressed these elders and seventies on their duties and the importance of missionary work at home and abroad. I slept at Pres Jacks’ home.
