Raymond, Canada.

Am well.

Still windy day.

Pres. Wells & I attended the Knight Academy devotional exercises & spoke to the students. I wrote up my journal for past three days from notes taken and did other writing.

Pres. Wells & I took dinner with my cousin Phoebe Longstroth Evans. We called on brother McCarthy & family. Pres Allen took us in Auto out to the Knight farm and saw the threshers at work. We spent the evening at Pres. Allen’s, read papers, played games &c.

2 November 1915 • Tuesday

Am well & happy.

Cloudy and calm weather.

I wrote letters to Wm Salmon & to my wife, read from “Jesus the Christ.[”]

Went with Pres. Allen & others to the Knight Buck ranch about seven miles from town. Took train at 4:50 P.M. and arrived in Cardston about 6:35 P.M. We were met at Station. Sister Campbell went with Sister Hinman and Pres. Wells & I with Pres Wood where we were made welcome and comfortable. [p. 194]

Am well & happy.

Fine weather.

Went down town with Prests. Wells & Wood and inspected temple and school building now in course of construction. Read the papers &c and in the afternoon read from “Jesus The Christ.” visited &c. A restful day.

4 November 1915 • Thursday

Cardston.

Am well.

Pleasant day.

I went with Pres. Wood, Pres. Wells & Sister Campbell in Auto to Mountain View, 18 miles and Bp. Parker & wife with team & carriage took us on to the upper ranch house of Cochrane ranch fording the Belly river. We took dinner there and went on out to the beef herd belonging to the Church, 365 head. I rode horse back from ranch to Cattle & return to across the river. Distance 50 miles. Spent the evening at Pres. Woods home, had Edson machine music. I took a bath before retiring and had a good night’s sleep.

Am well & happy.

This is a fine day.

Remained at Pres. Woods all day reading, visiting &c.

In the evening attended a M.I.A. [p. 195] demonstration of the home night and ward MIA dance.

6 November 1915 • Saturday

Cardston.

Am well & happy.

Beautiful day.

Attended 10:00 A.M. Conference meeting where Y.M. & Y.L. M.I.A. convention work was done. I took part in the discussions. Between meetings we took dinner, complimary, with the Y.M. & Y.L. temporary cafe.

At afternoon meeting I occupied about 22 minutes on the subject of example with good liberty, concluding speaker. When I say live a good life you think of self. When I say set a good example you think of benefitting others but you can not help self without helping others or benefit others without helping self.

At 4:15 Attended R. Class convention meeting and took part in the discussions. After the meeting Pres. Wells & I went around the temple in course of construction At the S.E. corner there are eight courses above the corner stone. The corner stone is about twelve or fifteen feet from the ground. Work progressing nicely. [p. 196]

Spent the evening at Pres. Wood’s.

7 November 1915 • Sunday

Am well

Good weather.

Attended R. Class convention at 9:00 A.M. and took part in the discussions.

Attended & spoke at 10:30 A.M. Conference meeting, children of the Sund. Schools present. I told the Story of Abram & Zimri and recited the poem “A Mother to her Son”. [“]Honor Thy father & thy mother” my theme.

Attended & spoke at Seventies meeting at 12:15 o’clock.

Called & saw my wife’s sister Mamie.

At 2:00 P.M. meeting I occupied about 30 min. Subject. “Faith.” The necessity for it; how promote or acquire it &c.

At 5:30 I broke fast at brother Lowe’s, S. Supt. M.I.A.

Attended evening meeting and was one of the Speakers & occupied about 45 minutes on the Subject of R. Class work. This has been a busy day.

I received sale contract for my second 80 acres of land on Cochrane ranch.

8 November 1915 • Monday

Am well.

Pres. Wells, Sister Joan Campbell [p. 197] and I left Cardston 8:15 A.M. & reached Gt Falls at 7:45 P.M. and put up at Rainbow hotel. I had room 321. On the train I read from The book. “Jesus The Christ.[”] After Supper Pres R. S. Wells & I went to a picture show and saw “Damaged Goods.”

I shaved &c making my toilet & after breakfast, wrote up my journal for the past two days.

Took train for Butte at 9:05 A.M. Arrived at Butte at 3:55 P.M.

On the train I had a lengthy gospel conversation with a young Englishman 23 yrs old recently from England (T. J. Woodward) Has a brother in Phoenix, Ariz.

We took train at Butte at 5:05 P.M.

Arrived in Salt Lake at 8:35 A.M. Found all well at home.

I looked after my mail & correspondence, issued checks &c.

Attended Gen. Bd. meeting, Circle meeting and Ensign Stake Priesthood meeting. [p. 198]

All well as usual.

Pleasant weather.

I attended weekly Council meeting from 10 AM to 1:30 P.M. Attended a missionary meeting at temple annex and assisted in setting apart and instructing missionaries.

I set apart Jos. Adam Godfrey to Gt Britain also Leonard Joseph Wagment of Warren ward to Gt. Britain. I attended to Some business down town and got home about 6:00 P.M. George & Joel took supper with us and their wives coming from their club meeting took pie with us & Geo. & Edith Spent the evening with us.

12 November 1915 • Friday

All well.

Clowdy day

I worked at my desk all day. Wrote an article by request for the YW. Journal Dec 23rd & 25th Greatness in the Lives of Jesus Christ & Joseph Smith.

I spent some time in the evening with Mother & the small children playing flinch.

I took the 11:45 P.M. train at about 10:30 for Idaho Falls, Pres C. H. Hart, my companion. Had a good night’s sleep & rest. [p. 199]

13 November 1915 • Saturday

Cold Day.

Arrived in Idaho Falls at 8:20 A.M. and were met at depot by Elder Dinwoody, S.S. S Schools & informed that the conference for Sat. was to be held at Ucon ward nine miles up the Yellowstone branch line so we retrained and went on and were met by bishop Kirkham with Auto & taken about a mile to the meeting house where the conference convened at 10:00 A.M. Attendance 182. I was one of the speakers and occupied 35 min. Subject. Attendance at Sacrament and other meetings, read Luke 14:16–24 I went to dinner with Samuel Robinson, my wife’s half uncle. At afternoon meeting the attendance was 262. I was one of the speakers and occupied 40 minutes on R. Class work.

At 1:00 P.M. Attended Stake priesthood meeting and addressed the meeting. Subject ward teaching The Stake is low on teaching and attendance at Sacrament meetings. After meetings we started to Ida. Falls in Auto but had trouble & had to send for another car out of the Falls to pull us in. This car broke down on the way and we had to phone for the third car. [p. 200]

Pres. Hart & I staid at night at Pres. Heber Austins.

14 November 1915 • Sunday

Idaho Falls.

Cold day.

Attended Religion Class meeting at 9:30 A.M. and took part in the discussions.

Attended 10:30 Conference meeting, Attendance, 426. I was one of the speakers & occupied 20 min. Subj. “The evil of bearing false witness.”

At 12:20 P.M. Attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency and bishoprics & spoke to them on the “Home Evening.” Pres. Hart & I went to dinner with Bishop Crabtree.

At afternoon meeting I was one of the speakers and occupied 35 Min. Subject “Ward teaching.”

At 7:30 P.M. meeting I did not take any time as other speakers used it.

We took our car at 10:40 P.M.

15 November 1915 • Monday

Arrived home at 8:25 A.M. Attended “Founder’s Day” exercises of the L.D.S. High School occupying the whole day. I made a few remarks while at luncheon.

In the evening I worked at my desk. [p. 201]

Stormy day.

Mother ill.

I worked at my desk all day. Received word from Holland. Wrote to my son LeGrand in Holland, to my daughter Nerva in Tooele and to my daughters Ruby & Lucena at Logan.

Made written report of Religion class work in Yellowstone, Taylor, Alberta & Bingham stakes and mailed to the Sec’y. of the General Board.

Geo. & Edith took supper with us.

All usually well

Fine day.

I was with my brethren of the Council of Twelve from 10:00 AM to 5:00 P.M. in hearing the L. E. Woolley case. Attended my circle meeting at 6:30. Mother & I called at my son Joel’s.

18 November 1915 • Thursday

All well.

Fine day.

Attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10:00 AM to 2:00 P.M. Met with Primary Sisters at 9:30 and considered some plans for Primary work.

Made preparation to leave for Panguitch to-morrow morning. [p. 202]

All usually well.

Fine weather.

In company with Pres. C. H. Hart and Mabel Cooper I took 7:50 A.M. train for Marysvale arriving there at 6:00 P.M. We were met at Station by a brother Owen of Panguitch with Auto & taken to Panguitch in comfort arriving there at 10:00 P.M. Pres. Hart & I stayed at Pres. James Houston’s, Sister Cooper stayed at Dr. Clark’s.

20 November 1915 • Saturday

Am well.

Beautiful day.

Attended Conjoint M.I.A. convention meeting at 10:00 A.M. in the ward tabernacle and treated two of the topics occupying about 30 minutes.

At 2 P.M. meeting local brethren occupied the time. Attendance 129

Attended Religion Class conference at 4:15 & took part in the discussions

Attended MIA demonstration in the evening. Home evening and M.I.A. Dance.

21 November 1915 • Sunday

Panguitch

Am well.

Good weather

At 9:00 A.M. attended R. Class meeting & took part in discussion. [p. 203]

Attended 10:30 A.M. Conference meeting, the children with us attendance 239. I talked about 20 min Subject Sacrament & Atonement.

At 12:15 Attended a meeting of the Stake presidency, bishops & High Counselors. I presented the matter of the monthly home evening and it was adopted.

Conferred with the Presidency and showed them the low record they are making:

At 2 P.M. Attendance 238.

I occupied about 35 min. on Local conditions, statistics & what they show. After meeting we set apart some officers & had further consultation with the Stake presidency.

At 7:30 P.M. attended meeting and occupied about 20 min on R Class work.

We found religious work in Panguitch at a low ebb.

22 November 1915 • Monday

Panguitch.

My companions & I left Panguitch before 4:00 A.M. in Owen Auto & got to the Vail at 7:40 A.M. Took train at 8:50 A.M. and arrived home at 7:00 P.M. [p. 204]

I spent the evening with my wife, my daughter Nerva at my son George’s. Retired late.

23 November 1915 • Tuesday

All well.

Weather fine.

I spent the forenoon at my desk. Received a letter from a woman I met on the train in Canada dated Taber, Canada. She gave me a tract & I gave her my personal card with the Articles of faith and She gave these to non-mormons and wants more. I mailed her some. Ada Bishop is the name. Attended a missionary meeting at temple Annex. I alone set apart ten missionaries except that in several instances I was assisted by the fathers of the Elders.

All well.

Rained during the past night. Snowed during the day. We have practically had no winter till now. I spent most of the day until 4:00 P.M. reading “Jesus the Christ.” Attended Y.M.M. Gen. Bd. meeting & my Circle meeting. Alice & I went to the Liberty picture show & saw Caberia in the evening.

25 November 1915 • Thursday

All well.

Last night was a cold one. Clear to-day. This is Thanksgiving’s day by proclamation of the Governor.

I spent the forenoon at home reading “Jesus the Christ.” With my family I took dinner with my son George & wife and spent the evening there. Had an excellent turkey dinner & pleasant visit. Joel & Georgina had her folks to their home.

All well.

Some rain.

Attended weekly council meeting from 10:00 A.M. to about 2:00 P.M. Attended to some business down town, wrote letters to my son LeGrand in Holland &. to my daughter Ruby in Logan.

Made preparations to take train for Thompson, thence on 38 mi. to Moab. I sent announcements of my daughter’s engagement to Clarence Silver, to Herald Republican & Deseret News. Took train at 10 P.M.

27 November 1915 • Saturday

Arrived in Thompson at 9:20 A.M. Took Auto stage to Moab 38 miles and arrived there a little after noon.

Staid over night at Bp. Petersons & took supper at retired Bishop Larson’s. At 2 P.M. Conference meeting I was one of the speakers and occupied about 25 min. on Religion Class work, what the gospel is doing for us. At evening public meeting I occupied 25 min. Subject Sins of omission & commission. Text read. Luke 16:19–31. Influences which cause us to avoid the sins of omission & commission & to do good & serve God & man.

2. By so doing we honor God, the Church, stake & ward. Parents & Kindred, children & communities & self.

3. Popularity. What will others say. In the church it is popular to do right & to be religiously active.

4. To show appreciation of favors & blessings from God, our parents & others &c.

Moab, Utah.

Pleasant day.

Am well.

Attended 9:00 A.M. Sunday School Convention meeting and took part in the discussions.

Attended 10:30 Conference meeting and 10 min. Proper method of administering the Sacrament.

At 2:00 P.M. meeting I occupied about 40 minutes. What statistics show. Tithes, teaching, meeting going, missionaries, marriages—Comments.

After meeting Bros. R. S. Wells, Jno. W. Walker & I took auto for Thompson and got train due at 5:00 P.M. but an hour late and went in to Salt Lake.

29 November 1915 • Monday

Home.

I left the sleeping car at 7:00 A.M. Worked at my desk. [p. 208] Mailed to Aman Moore my ck. $1.50 to pay subscription to an Oswego News paper, a weekly. This paper is supposed to print news of the Portland Oregon Cement works from time to time in which I am interested. I read from “Jesus the Christ.”

A nice letter from my son Legrand in Holland and his photo taken with a beard which he has since shaved off.

All well.

Unsettled weather.

I finished reading “Jesus the Christ.” A book of 800 pages by Jas. E. Talmage An excellent contribution to Church literature. Wrote a Christmas letter to my son LeGrand in Holland and intend to send him through the Presidents office $20.00 with which to buy a suit of clothes or an overcoat as he most needs.

I now have about 12 tons of coal in my cellar for winter & summer. This coal costs me $4.25 per ton delivered, carried in to the basement with sacks. I bought the coal with Jos. Nelson, and my sons Geo & Joel.

In the evening Alice & I attended a Pioneer party by the Primary Gen. Bd. [p. 209]
