Played Golf with my sons

Have workmen reshingling the house. I spent most of the day at home. Called at the office of Pres Grant at his request for an interview on the Johnson Teiger case. &c.

3 August 1927 • Wednesday

I played a game of golf with Geo. & LeGrand. Spent some time at the Dentists office &c.

4 August 1927 • Thursday

I played golf, Attended to some matters at the temple Supervised improvements at home, Spent some time in the Dentists chair &c

5 August 1927 • Friday

Played Golf with George, spent some time at my desk at the Temple &c. Am having my teeth treated and visit the Dentist H. M. Smith, almost daily and some times twice a day. Mother & I went to Pantages.

6 August 1927 • Saturday

I played golf with my son George & A Bro. Snow, Son of Moroni Snow. Had dental work done, treating a tooth. Visited at Lucena’s where I took dinner with other numbers of the family. Edna, came down from Ogden & I went downtown & got her [page break]

7 August 1927 • Sunday

Edna stayed with us last night. We have Wallace and Orin with us part of the time while their parents are on a trip to the N West. I went to the Dentist at 10: A.M. for teeth treatment. Pres. Clawson has asked me to go to the N. Arizona Conferences and to do so I should leave about next Thursday, so I am pushing the tooth treatment in order to be ready to go.

We are having to dinner at 3:00 P.M. Edna, Lucena & Rega, Oliver & Marie & Estella & Spencer. This is our Fast day. The weather is beautiful. We have had several weeks of very warm weather but to-day and last night it has been cooler.

We had our house reshingled last week, with Perfect Saratoga shingles, the very best. The weather was favorable, no rain. The labor of two Shingles & tinder was by Contract $3.00 per m. shingles. It required 14½ m. Shingles. I cleaned up the yard of Shingles giving them away for kindling.

I bore testimony in Fast meeting of 27th ward.

8 August 1927 • Monday

The Temple opened for baptisms this day. I sealed a couple, the daughter of Normal Lee. I also officiated in sealing work for the Tate and De La Mare families. I played a game of golf with my son George. Had dental treatment. [page break] During the Temple vacation I have had the following improvements made in and about the home.

Installation of a Baker oil heater $500.

Lucena’s birthday Mother & I went to the Temple in the early morning. I was the Speaker at the temple meeting. I sealed 10 or 15 couples during the day. Went to the Dentist for tooth treatment, In the evening

10 August 1927 • Wednesday

Nerva’s birthday.

I attended to my duties as usual in the Temple. Had treatment for my tooth at dentists. Prepared to leave tomorrow morning for St. Johns, Arizona Am suffering with tooth ache.

11 August 1927 • Thursday

I took 8:40 A.M. train to Los Angeles arriving at 9:15, <Friday> 45 min late. Got Santa fe train out of Los Angeles at 9:30 A.M. for Holbrook. Arrived in Holbrook Sat. 7:15 A.M. Nothing of moment occurred on train [page break] <Last night on the train I dreamed of seeing my mother who seemed to be directing me in hanging a large Am. flag in a heavy rain storm.>

13 August 1927 • Saturday

Arriving at Holbrook at 7:15 A.M. I was met by Bro. Don Udall who after 30 min. wait took me with him, his wife & Pres. Hammond by auto to St. Johns about 65 miles distant. We were two hours enroute. I found a Brother Lawrence Sherwood and family waiting for me. He took me on to Eager about 30 miles and I went in meeting at 10:45 A.M. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 35 minutes on the Subject of the H. Ghost. Had good liberty and a number of compliments followed, May the Lord be praised. I took dinner at Bp. Hall’s where I spent the night.

At the afternoon meeting I occupied about 40 min Subject Text. Moses 1:39. Had good liberty.

At 4:30 P.M. and until 6:30 P.M. I was in meeting with the Presidency and Bishops and gave instructions and answered questions. An entertainment was on/in the evening but I excused myself and by invitation visited the home of W [blank] Rencher and later I spent some time with Bp. Hall and his wife at their home where I stayed the night. <Dreamed of Seeing Satan and of Rebuking him.>

14 August 1927 • Sunday

Eagar, Arizona.

I addressed a 9:00 A.M. meeting of Stake and ward officers and at close of the meeting conjoint I addressed the Stake Presidency & High Council and catechized them as to their observance of the Gospel requirements. [page break]

The 10:30 A.M. meeting, a crowded house was a dedicatorial service of the newly completed $30,000 meeting house. I spoke briefly and offered the prayer of dedication. At the close of this meeting I addressed a meeting of Ward teachers 38 or 40 in number. I took dinner with a Bro. Lesueur. His wife used to live in the home of Dr. Wright & wife, my cousin.

At the afternoon meeting I occupied 40 minutes, Subject, The Eternity of the Marriage Covenant, The evils of divorcement and child birth central, &c. Had good help from the Lord. At the close of this meeting I met with the 104th quorum of Seventies and three Presidents were installed filling the Council. I set them apart. I also set apart two counselors in the Presidency of the High Priests quorum, two counselors to Bishops & two High Counselors. In the evening I spoke at the Conjoint M.I.A. meeting, subject, the Slogan, “We stand for a fuller knowledge of the Book of Mormon and a testimony of its Divine origin.[”]

After meeting I rode to St. Johns with Prests Udall and Hamblin and was taken to the Elia Hotel for the Night.

Considerable rain fell at Eagar during the day, but little or non[e] fell at St. John. This has been a strenuous day for me and during the night I had troublesome dreams, travelling on dangerous roads &c.

15 August 1927 • Monday

St. Johns Ariz.

I spent the day studying, reading and writing. I took my meals at Pres. Levi S. Udalls & made headquarters at the Hotel. [page break] Considerable rain fell during the day which is much needed in this section of the country as there has been a great shortage of water this season. I was told that the Lyman Canal had not been more than one fifth full this season.

A public meeting was called for St. Johns this evening that I might have opportunity to address the people. This was on Pres. Udalls’ suggestions. The meeting was well attended, excellent interest and attention. I had good liberty and occupied about 60 minutes. My subject was: man’s pre-existant state; life beyond the grave; resurrection; and Salvation particularly as it pertains to the dead and our obligation to redeem our dead &c.

16 August 1927 • Tuesday

St Johns, Arizona.

Am well.

I rode to Holbrook with Sister Berry Palmer and her son Paul in a new Chevrolette car, a distance of 65 or 70 miles, She volunteered to bring me down, and I think she came a purpose. At Holbrook I arranged with Bishop Williams to have some one meet me at the Train in Holbrook was Saturday morning and take me to Snowflake to conference and to hold meeting in St Holbrook next Sunday evening if agreeable with the Stake President.

I Got train no. 1 out of Holbrook at 11:23 A.M. for Los Angeles.

17 August 1927 • Wednesday

Arrived in Los Angeles over the Santa Fe from Holbrook at 8:20 A.M. While eating at the Ry. Lunch Counter Bro. Lattimer, a missionary with me in Gt. Britain came and Sat by me at lunch [page break] After eating he started for San Pedro & took me with him as far as Long Beach. I spent the remainder of the day sight seeing, reading, had suit pressed and took my first lesson in Golf from a Mr Maurer. I stayed at night at Kennebec Hotel.

18 August 1927 • Thursday

Long, Beach, Cal.

Am well.

I spent three hours at the Indian Golf Course @ 25c per hr. Attended an excellent picture show in the afternoon, special before 1:30 @ 15c. I took Pacific Electric train to Los Angeles and put up at Hotel Rosslyn, 5th & Main St, $1.50 A good dinner served for 50c. I called at the Santa Fe Ry. ticket office and bought my Pullman accommodations for Holbrook tomorrow.

I wrote a two paged letter home to Mother before retiring. This is the third since I left home a week ago to-day.

19 August 1927 • Friday

Los Angeles, Cal.

Am well.

I took Santa Fe train No, 2 at 9:30 A.M. for Holbrook. We got dinner at Barstow. It rained hard while we were at Dagget. An hour and a half west of Needles our Engine struck a Dodge Truck in which were three boys going after a load of sand. One boy was killed outright, another received a large scalp wound & was rendered unconscious. It was not known whether he would live. The [page break] oldest boy, about 18 yrs of age by jumping from the truck was saved from bodily injury. A Doctor on the train was on hand to give first aid. The train was delayed about 1 ½ hours. It was very warm crossing the desert.

20 August 1927 • Saturday

On train for Holbrook.

Am well.

We reached Holbrook at 7:30 A.M. 30 minutes late. I was met by Bp Westover and counselor Tanner of Joseph ward who with sister time and a Bro. [blank]. Took me to Snowflake, about 28 miles in time for a Bishops & H. councilors meeting at 8:30 A.M. I spoke about 35 min. At the 10:00 A.M. conference meeting I occupied about 40 min. Subject: Slogan & reading of the Book of Mormon & other Church works. How to read & Study the Scriptures. I took dinner at Pres. Samuel F. Smith’s home and slept there at night. No word from home.

At 2:00 P.M. Meeting of conference I occupied about 40 minutes, Subject: How investigate the Gospel, Fundamentals, What Pre-existence explains. The ignorance of the religious world because they do not understand the principles of pre-existence. There are other causes for their ignorance or religious blindness.

I ate Supper with Bro. Asael Smith & family. Attended evening Priesthood meeting and after separation into departments I talked to the High Priests. Assisted by Pres. S. F. Smith I administered to two or more people. We had a busy day. The Lord helped me. May his name be praised forever. Warm weather even uncomfortable. [page break]

Snowflake, Arizona.

Am well

Warm day.

I had a good night’s rest and after breakfast I wrote up my journal for two days.

Attended 9:00 A.M. meeting of the Stake Board of Education.1

Attended and spoke at the forenoon and afternoon sessions of the conference and after 4 P.M. rode to Winslow about 60 or 70 miles and there we held meeting in the evening and organized a ward & Set apart the officers as per report I took 11:00 P.M. train out of Winslow and arrived in San Berdino at about 3:45 and waited until 8:10 P.M. for the U.P. train which I got for home

23 August 1927 • Tuesday

Arrived home at 8:30 P.M. & was met by my Son Ray, my wife, Lucena & Spencer & Estella.

24 August 1927 • Wednesday

Home.

All well

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. Played a game of golf with my sons George, LeGrand & Joel. Attended circle meeting in the evening. Jack & Ruby were with us and we took them down to Mamie’s & Nina’s Ruby stayed with Estella at night. [page break]

25 August 1927 • Thursday

Home.

Our daughter Estella went to the LDS Hospital at about 2:30 A.M. and at 9:00 A.M. gave birth to a fine baby girl. Mother & I were in the Hospital when the baby was born. This makes us all happy. Ruby was with her in the birthroom.

I attended to my duties at the temple as usual. Attended the weekly meeting of the Presidency and the Twelve and a special meeting of the Twelve in Pres. Clawsons office. Jack & Ruby went to Ogden in their car on the way home and I took my car and Mother, Nerva, Thelma and Lucena and leaving S.L. at 5:00 P.M. arrived at Edna’s at 6:20 P.M. where Jack & Ruby were visiting; they and Edna joined us and we went up to the Hermitage in Ogden Canyon taking our lunch from here and had supper We got to Salt Lake about 10:20 P.M.

I went to the temple as usual where I had a busy time.

I made some preparations for the Pioneer Stake Conference.

28 August 1927 • Sunday

I spoke at morning and afternoon in the Pioneer Stake House and in the Tabernacle at 2:00 P.M. & Set apart the Bishopric of the 6-7 Ward, also two Alternate H. Counselors. Visited my daughter Estella at the Hospital. [page break]

29 August 1927 • Monday

I spent much of the day at the Auto Garage where my car was being got ready for painting.

I attended Services under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church at the grave of President Brigham Young where a name plate was placed on the iron fence surrounding the grave. This is the 50th anniversary of Pres. Youngs death. We sang “Where First the Glorious Light of Truth” &c and O. F. Whitney offered prayer. Pres. Grant, Ivins & Nibley spoke and Bp. S. Q. Cannon offered the closing prayer. We sang as a second hymn “Come Come ye Saints &c”

30 August 1927 • Tuesday

I attended to my duties at the temple and at 4:30 went with my sons Geo & LeGrand to Nibley Park and played a game of Golf. In the evening Mother & I attended an evenings entertainment at the home of the Andrews’ & Ravencrofts’ in honor to Bro & Sister Geo. Easter who but recently came from Liverpool, England. We gave them a nice clock. I set apart seven missionaries and addressed a Company of about 55 missionaries Spoke at the funeral of Dr. Hodgesen Higgins in Richards Ward

31 August 1927 • Wednesday

I wrote up my journal for several days from memory. Attended to my duties at the Temple as usual.

Attended Prayer Circle meeting. Went to the L.D.S. Hospital. &c. [page break]
