Weather moderated

Mother not quite well. I went to the Temple some what earlier than usual this morning. Attended Temple meeting, and answered questions afterward. At 10 A.M. attended weekly council meeting and it was after 3:00 P.M. when I got back to my desk.

I went home about 4: P.M. I took my Sister Nerva & daughter Nerva to their homes in auto, they having [page break] been visiting with Mother who kept her bed all day. Later I went down to Oliver’s and got Ruby and brought her up to our home and she gave Mother treatment, after which I took her back to Oliver’s where she is treating & nursing Marie. I phoned my Son Joel and he came down at 11: P.M. and we administered to Mother.

2 March 1928 • Friday

Mother had a fairly good night after 12 o’clock.

I arose at 5:30 and went to the Temple as usual. Had a busy day. I spent the time from 3: to about 5 P.M. with Geo. A. & Jos F. Smith, committee work. Division of Liberty Stake, considered.

I spent the evening at home with Mother who was confined to her bed with a bad case of Eczema.

I attended to several items of business before to the Temple. I spent some time at the Temple and attended to business after outside. Spent the evening at home with Mother.

I spent the day home with my wife who is ill.

5 March 1928 • Monday

I spent most of the day at the Temple. Played a game of golf with my Son George in the early evening. Was gone from home <90 min.> [page break] In the evening I went to the Wilkes theater with other members of the family, ward tickets. Edna, Ruby & Ray went with me as my guests.

6 March 1928 • Tuesday

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual.

Mother is improving. Ruby is with her. I took mother for a ride in the Auto. Ruby & Nerva & her Alice went along.

7 March 1928 • Wednesday

Mother not as well.

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. Took Ruby to 12:45 P.M. train. Did some work on my Income Tax Report. Attended a meeting of the Twelve, P. B. & Some Stake Presidents from 9: A.M. to Noon.

8 March 1928 • Thursday

Mother is some better.

I attended Temple meeting at 8:30 and a meeting of the Twelve at 9: A.M., and our regular Council meeting at 10: A.M. After this meeting I Sealed five couples living and attended another meeting of the Twelve.

I left the Temple at about 3:30 and went home & later played a game of golf with my sons George & LeGrand. Spent the evening at home with Sister Richards.

9 March 1928 • Friday

Rainy weather.

Mother about the Same. She goes about the house some, but [page break] the Eczema is still bad on her. I went to the Temple as usual and presided at the 8:30 Temple meeting. Attended to deskwork & correspondence and other Temple duties. I went home at about 1: P.M. Took mother, Estella & Nina and their children for an auto ride. Made ready and took 6: P.M. Train U.P., for Denver in company with Pres. Elias S. Woodruff of the Western States Mission. This is my 46th wedding day anniversary.

10 March 1928 • Saturday

Denver

Am well.

Pres. Elias S. Woodruff and I arrived in denver at 12:15 P.M. We were met at the Station by Pres. & Sister John M. Knight with auto driven by a Sister Hintze and we were taken to the Mission home where we had dinner, wrote letters, &c. I wrote to Mother, to Sarah and to Edna. We planned our visits to the various Districts & Branches covering a period of three weeks. We left Denver on 7:20 P.M. train for Alamosa.

11 March 1928 • Sunday

We Pres & Sis. Knight, Pres. Woodruff & I, left denver last night and arrived here at 6: P.M. A.M. We were met at the Station by three of the Elders. Went to the hotel, thence to Cafe for breakfast, thence walked out several blocks to the L.D.S. Church. Returning to the Hotel, I wrote up my journal for yesterday and today. The funeral services of the wife of Branch President J. W. Dyer, [page break] are to be held at 1:00 o’clock to-day, hence our appointment here for to-day. Later in the day. I attended the funeral services referred to to above and occupied about 40 minutes with good liberty. The meeting house assembly room and adjoining rooms were filled and extra chairs were brought in for the occasion. Pres. & Sister Knight each spoke and Pres. Woodruff offered the opening prayer. We three men & sister Knight and three of the Elders went to the home of Bro. & Sis. Boices’ to dinner. We held a meeting with the six missionaries present and all of us present spoke. Two Elders & two sisters of this District were absent. At 7:30 P.M. Public meeting was addressed by Sister Knight, Pres. Knight, Pres Woodruff & myself. I occupied about 25 min., referring to the release of Pres. Knight & the appointment of Pres Woodruff his successor and counseled the saints to not be a burden to the Elders but help them in the spread of truth. He that is warned to warn his neighbor.

12 March 1928 • Monday

Alamosa, Colorado.

Am well

Pres. Knight, Pres. Woodruff and I left Alamosa on D. & R.G. train at 7:15 A.M. and reached Santa Fe at 2:30 P.M. We took auto buss at 3:30 and arrived at Lamy on the Santa Fe R.R. about 18 mi. at about 4:20 P.M. We got train at about 5:10 P.M. and arrived in Albuquerque, N. M. at 7:10 P.M. [page break]

There were several Elders at the train to meet us and escort us to the Hotel “Combs” where we spent the night. I had room No. 213 with a bath which I enjoyed. We attended a public meeting at 8:00 P.M. in a hired hall There were about 70 people present. We three visitors occupied the time in order as follows, I Pres Knight 20 min; Pres Cannon 10: min; and I about 40 m. I spoke of the sacrifice people have to make in joining the church in the world, referred to my mother & her parents and what their acceptance of the gospel meant to me, and asked what these people’s children would reap as the fruits of the action of their parents in accepting & living the gospel. Our father expects us to become teachers and preachers of the gospel when we have received it &c. Talked upon the Subject of Sacrifice &c. Had good liberty. It was 11:30 when I retired to my bed after a hot bath.

13 March 1928 • Tuesday

Albuquerque, N.M.

Am well.

Pres. Knight, Pres. Woodruff and I took train at 9:20 A.M. and arrived in Bluewater at 12: noon. We were met by some of the brethren and in autos were taken to the Recreation Hall where a feast was preparing and about sixty people were fed. Ten Elders being among that number. At 2: P.M. a public meeting was held and I was one of the speakers occupying about 40 minutes. I referred to my former visits, this [page break] being my fourth to this place; expressed appreciation for the general welcome accorded; Complimented the people on having builded the new Church and recreation hall; also on the good things reported; gave instruction to do missionary work & aid the Elders &c. I had good liberty & felt satisfied with my effort. May the Lord be praised.

At close of the meeting we went with Bros. Roundy & Targin in an auto up to the dam & reservoir a distance of about 16 miles.

In the evening I attended the public meeting but did not get to talk. The attendance was about 134. I stayed at the home of Bro. & Sis. McNeal at night.

14 March 1928 • Wednesday

Bluewater N.M.

I attended and took part in a Priesthood meeting of the Elders from 9: A.M. to 1 P.M. and a public meeting from 1: P.M. to 3:20 P.M. I was the concluding speaker and occupied 45 min. with good liberty. Subject: “History Repeats Itself.” What we most need. Incentive. Hopes of Reward. Fear of Punishment; Lessons we should Learn from experiences of others. Our duty to ourselves & to our dead. I had good liberty and had many compliments including those of Prests. Knight & Woodruff. May the Lord be praised again. Prests. Knight & Woodruff & I left [page break] Bluewater in Auto with Bros. Roundy & Tegeum at 4:07 P.M. & arrived in Albuquerque at 9:07 P.M. and put up at Combe hotel, During last night I dreamed that my wife called me “O, Papa” as if something were the matter and I was needed. This gives me some concern. The night before I dreamed I saw the Devil and Commanded him to clear out which he did. A night or two before that I dreamed that my mother was alive and seriously ill, nigh unto death. I hope there is no significance to any of these dreams.

While at Bluewater I set apart Elder Garn as District President.

Albuquerque, N.M. Combs Hotel.

Pres. Knight, Pres. Woodruff and I took 7:40 train to Lancy, and from there took auto stage to Santa Fe where we got D. & R.G. train at 12:05 P.M. and arrived in Alamosa at 7:30 P.M. Here we got 8:40 P.M. train for Denver.

Am well

We arrived in Denver at 7:15 A.M. and went to the Mission home where I received a letter from home bearing good news. Sister R. is improving in health. I here wrote up my journal for yesterday and today, wrote letters, &c.

Spent an enjoyable day reading the Des. New Copies, resting &c. [page break]

Snow & cold.

I am well & happy

Attended a meeting of the missionaries at the Denver District with Presidents J. M. Knight & E. S. Woodruff & myself associated, 31 in all, and each spoke The missionaries were limited to 5 min. each. I spoke fast and occupied 55 min with good liberty. We went to the meeting without eating and had dinner after meeting which lasted from 8:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

At 3:00 P.M. this group met at the photographer’s and a group photo taken. In the evening I attended a meeting & entertainment in commemoration of the organization of the Reliefsocieties of the church.

18 March 1928 • Sunday

Denver

Am well.

I attended an 8:30 meeting of the missionaries for reporting.

I occupied about 35 minutes in the 10:15 A.M. Conference at which the attendance was 263, on the Subject of the Lord’s purpose & aim is to save souls; we are needed, what we are doing, What Saints should do to help &c. At the afternoon meeting I occupied about 35 minutes, subject: Pre-existence as a fundamental principle of the Gospel I had good liberty, thanks be to the Lord.

At the 7:30 meeting I occupied 45 min. with good liberty in an effort to magnify the names of the Father and the Son and the Gospel. Talked about the necessity for faith in these, and spoke of the first Principles of the Gospel.

I met many people after meeting. [page break]

19 March 1928 • Monday

Denver.

Am well.

Presidents Knight, and Woodruff, and I took 8:15 A.M. train for Pueblo. Arrived at Pueblo at 12:15 P.M. where we were met by Elder Croft of Idaho Falls with his Nash Car and we were taken to the “Hotel Congress,” where we took rooms. We went to a cafateria and had a splendid dinner, 63¢. We attended a missionary meeting at which there were 5 Sisters and 10 Elders. Each spoke. I occupied about 40 minutes on Character and the power of thought in its formation, also general instruction to missionaries. After meeting Pres. Knight, Dist Pres. Jess Croft and I rode out to the Steel works where Pres. Knight obtained permission which had before been denied for us to go through the plant tomorrow morning.

I wrote home to Mother—

At 7:30 we attended public meeting in our own church. There were 146 in Attendance. I occupied 60 minutes. I urged the Saints to do real missionary work. I defined Mormonism, Salvation, the Gospel &c. I had good liberty.

20 March 1928 • Tuesday

Pueblo, Col.

Am well

Prests. J. M. Knight Elias S. Woodruff Elders Croft and Keetch and I were shown through the Colorado Coal & Fuel and Iron Co works by Employment Mgr., L. V. Selleck by permission [page break] of a Mr. Nelson at the office.

We spent about 1 ½ hours in the plant and there saw the manufacture of Steel rails, steel angel iron, iron posts, wire & nails of many sizes and kinds. We also saw how the coal is made into coke. &c.

We three took 11:15 A.M. train and arrived in Denver at about 3:00 P.M. Here I received letters from home, one from my wife and one from Pres. Grant; also a card from Sarah. I wrote to Pres. Grant, to Mother, & to Sarah, read the back numbers of the News’ &c. Pres. Woodruff & I walked about the section of the City in which we are located. In the evening Pres. & Sis. Knight, Pres. Woodruff and I went to the Orpheum Theater.

21 March 1928 • Wednesday

Am Well.

Beautiful Day.

Attended class meeting with the missionaries at 8:30. At 10 o’clock Pres. Woodruff & Sister Knight, <& I> went with Sister Hintze & her friend a sister [blank] in Sis. Hintze’s Buick for a ride to See the city. We spent about two hours most pleasantly. I had my suit pressed, my hair cut and my shoes shined. I spent some time reading and writing. Pres. Knight, Pres. Woodruff and I took train about 10: P.M. for Grand Island’s

Grand Island, Neb.

Beautiful day.

Prests. Knight, Woodruff & I arrived here at 11:40 A.M. We were met by six or eight missionaries and they accompanied us to the “Hotel Yancey,” where we took rooms. We met the [page break] ten missionaries, 8 Elders & 2 Sisters at 1: P.M. and from 2:00 to about 5: P.M. we were in meeting We attended public meeting at 7:30 P.M. 74 being in attendance. I occupied 60 min. on the Father & the Son & the Principles of the Gospel. Had good liberty. I also spoke of Pre-existance & as a fundamental of the Gospel. Bore my testimony in closing & enjoyed the Spirit of the Lord through out. I tried to magnify the Father, the Son & the Gospel and the Lord helped me.

23 March 1928 • Friday

Grand Island, Neb.

Am well

Warm day.

A brother Henline of Grand Island took Presidents John M. Knight, Elias S. Woodruff and me in an auto to see the places of interest in and about the town. We saw the Stock yards, the Sugar plant, Catholic Cathedral and other places of interest. We also saw a monument erected to the honor of the Pioneers of 49 to California. This City is built on the Mormon trail of the 1847 Emigrants and some of the mile stones or markers have the picture of the Covered wagon on them. We got train out of Grand Island on the Burlington at 9:50 A.M. and arrived in Lincoln at 1:00 P.M. We were met at the Station by two Elders and two Sister missionaries who walked with us to “Hotel Capital,” where we took rooms. We three went to dinner after which Pres. Knight went with a Local Bro. Wright to the hospital [page break] to see his wife and Pres. Woodruff met the four missionaries again at the hotel. I went to my room to write, study &c. Later a Brother Wright took us to see the Town. We went to the Capitol Building and there Saw the Governor. We went to the Agricultural College and saw some fine homes & cattle. One Holstein Cow gives more than ten gal. of milk each day. She is milked four times a day. We saw Wm J. Bryan’s Home. This is also the home of General Pershing of the U.S. Army.

At the evening meeting held in Mortuary Parlors, Prests. Knight and Woodruff occupied about 15 min. each and I occupied about 60 min. Subject: Christ’s Spiritual birth, existance & works, his mortal life, death, Spiritual existence after death, Spiritual existence after death, his resurrection and exaltation. We had also a spiritual birth, existence &c following Jesus as far as the resurrection If faithful here we will follow him on to Glory. I spoke of the ordinances necessary as well as principles and that what is necessary for the living is necessary for the dead. The L.D. Saints have been temple building people and do genealogical & temple work both for themselves and for their dead as did former latter day saints. &c. The part the non member is playing in obtaining genealogy, My experience and in getting the Longstroth record. Read Bryan’s dissertation of the resurrection, read commentary on First Principles.

There were about 75 in attendance about 15 of whom were non members. The Lord helped me and blessed us all. [page break]

24 March 1928 • Saturday

Lincoln, Nebraska

Am well and happy.

The weather has turned a little cooler but is bright and clear. I took a bath last night and another this morning, had my physical culture and a change of linen before breakfast. After breakfast I returned to my room in “Hotel Capital” where I waited until train time to go to Omaha. We left Lincoln at 11:15 and arrived in Omaha at 1: P.M. We went to “Hotel Conant. Had dinner at Cafateria and at 2: P.M. went into a meeting of missionaries which continued until about 5 P.M., 12 Elders & 8 Sister missionaries being present.

After meeting Prests. Knights & Woodruff and I went by street car out to Florence where the Utah Pioneers of 1847 fitted out for their journey westward a thousand miles to the Valleys of the Salt Lake. At the meeting in the afternoon the Temperature was too low and I caught a nasty cold.

25 March 1928 • Sunday

Omaha, Neb.

My cold is developing.

I occupied some time in an 8 o’clock meeting of the 20 missionaries and in the public meeting at 10: o’clock I occupied 45 minutes. I read 2 Nephi 3.1: Also read comments on Apostate Conditions in Christendom. Talked to the Saints about doing real missionary work themselves and not monopolize the time of the missionaries. Had good libert[y]. Prests Knight, Woodruff & myself speak of each meeting [page break]

We held meeting at Council Bluffs at 2: P.M. 112 in attendance, same as in Omaha. I occupied. I occupied 45 minutes with good liberty. I referred to the fact that it was here in what was then known as Kanesville that Oliver Cowdery returned to the church. I read the 3 & 8 witnesses’ testimony to the B. of M. Also what is said of the character of those witnesses, and reasoned upon same. They are witnesses of the truth of all that had gone before in Jos. Smiths experience. &c. After meeting an Elder Cragun residing here took us in his auto to see the Town, and then drove us over to Omaha. My cold makes me to feel almost sick.

Attended evening meeting in Omaha, attendance 145. Pres Knight spoke on what others say of the Prophet Joseph. Pres Woodruff spoke of his prophecies, and I spoke of some principles Jos. Smith taught which were and are still new to the world only as they have learned of them from us, such as, Salvation for the dead, the Eternity of the marriage covenant &c. His works prove him a Prophet. I bore my testimony as usual in concluding. I occupied— I occupied about 45 minutes.

This has been a strenuous day having a cold it made it extra hard but the Lord was with me.

On arriving in Omaha, I received a letter from Mother written Mar. 19th and enclosed, one from Sarah of Mar 1st Mother was so far recovered as to go to the Temple for a while on the 20th. I am thankful for that. She has had a serious time with Eczema [page break]

Omaha, Nebraska.

I am feeling better of my cold this morning. A good bath last night and another this morning helps.

As our train does not leave Omaha until about 4: P.M. I have opportunity to do some writing and reading. I wrote to Pres. Clawson, to my wife, and to my daughter Sarah in Basel, Switzerland.

27 March 1928 • Tuesday

Prests. Knight, Woodruff and I left Omaha at 4:25 P.M. Yesterday on the Burlington line and arrived at Edgemont, So. Dakota at 8:00 o’clock this morning. We changed trains, leaving Edgemont at 8:20 and arrived in Hot Springs, in the Black Hills at 9:55 A.M. We were met at the Station by several Elders who accompanied us to the place of meeting, “The church of God” Building. We here had the Elders and held a meeting with them for several hours. All spoke.

All the Elders except two accompanied us on train to Rapid City leaving Hot Springs at about 4:00 P.M. we reached Rapid City at 7:15 P.M. making a change of trains at Buffalo Gap. We held meeting in a Lodge Hall about 100 present I was the last speaker and occupied 50 minutes with good liberty. Subject Saints do missionary work &c. We put up at the Harry Hotel. Am feeling well but still have some cold. [page break]

Rapid City, So. Dakota

Presidents John M. Knight and Elias S. Woodruff and I took Local Chicago & North Western train to Deadwood where we had several hours to wait. We took auto stage to Lead, 20 cent fare. This is a great mining and milling town where gold is mined. We got train Burlington Line at 2:40 and travelled through the Black Hills district, timbered, mountinous district until we reached the main Line of the Burlington at Edgemont, at 7:15. Here we got berth and went through to Denver as the most convenient route to reach Cheyenne.

29 March 1928 • Thursday

We reached Denver at 7:45 A.M. and got U.P. train out for Cheyenne at 8: A.M.

Arrived in Cheyenne at 11:45 A.M. On the train we had a lengthy conversation with a Mr. Connor who is a Banker & Stock man, home in Denver & Nauvoo He & his Co. partners have banking & land interests in Balfouch, in the Black Hills.

At the Station in Cheyenne I checked my larger grip, bought berth to Granger <Salt Lake> for tonight. Train leaves at 12:30 A.M. Can take my berth at 10:15 P.M. At Granger I change to local which gets me into Salt Lake at 6:10 tomorrow night.

Prests Knight & Woodruff return to Denver. [page break] I attended a meeting of the missionaries in the afternoon and a public meeting in the evening. I addressed both meetings. At the evening meeting I occupied 60 min with good liberty. Subject: Missionary work. Duty of saints to do missionary work. Natures testimony of God. The works of Jos. Smith prove him to have been a true prophet. The works of his successors prove them to be true Prophets and inspired leaders. I took train about 11:00 P.M.

30 March 1928 • Friday

All day on train from Cheyenne Wyoming, arriving at Salt Lake at 6:10 P.M. George, Mother & Ray met me at the depot. A number of the family members called in to see me in the evening. It is three weeks to-day since I left home for the Western States Mission.

31 March 1928 • Saturday

Home.

I spent some time at the Temple and some time at the Motor Equipment Co. where I had my snubbers or absorbers changed putting on new springs, &c cost 13.25. I took Geo. to the golf link where he, I and LeGrand played a game of golf. LeGrand made a score of 50., I 54. and George 61. Beautiful weather. Spent the evening at home with my wife. [page break]
