Home

Warm day.

With my new Deluxe DeSoto 8 Car, accompanied by my wife and three oldest daughters, I left home at about 5:00 A.M. for California via Brice, Grand & Zion Canyons. We had a pleasant trip and called at Manti and were shown through the Temple which the folks enjoyed very much We called at Brice Canyon 20 miles of[f] the main highway or 40 miles extra travel. We spent an hour or two there thence on as far as Mt. Carmel where we spent the night in a couple of cottage homes.

2 July 1930 • Wednesday

Mt. Carmel.

We are well

Warm day.

We left Mt Carmel about 4:30 A.M. and went to Grand Canyon where we [page break] spent about 1½ hrs. Then retraced our steps to Mt. Carmel junction, thence to Zion Canyon head, thence on to St. George. We decided to proceed across the desert by night to escape the intense heat. Leaving St George at 10:00 P.M. we drove through to Las Vagas arriving there about 2:30 A.M. where we halted for me to get an hour’s sleep, thence on, arriving at Barstow at 9:00 A.M. Sent wire to my son George as follows: 9:15 A.M. 2nd. “Visited Brice, Grand & Zions. Pleasant crossing desert. Inform folks. Well.”

3 July 1930 • Thursday

On auto to California.

We left St. George last night at 10:00 o’clock. Arrived at Barstow this morning at 9:00 A.M. The ride was pleasant with all car windows open & in my shirt sleeves with out collar. I stood the drive well and did the trick with but little sleep. We arrived at Glendale Cal., about 2: P.M. where we received a generous welcome at LeGrands home 1309 Sinaloa Drive.

4 July 1930 • Friday

We celebrated by playing a game of 18 hole golf LeGrand, Alex Nibley, Elmer Ashton & I. LeGrand Jr. & Lamont caddied for us.

After Dinner LeGrand & family and Clarence & Mamie & children who preceded us to Cal. by three days went out to the ocean beach & some of them bathed in the ocean. Some of us called at Ocean Park & saw the sights [page break] by night lights. The crowds & the enormity of the resort concessions was awe inspiring. We returned to Glendale via Washington Boulevard to Los Angeles, through the principle streets and on to Glendale arriving about 11:00 oclock. We had very interesting time through the day. We had a puncture on the way home by running over one of the buttons in the middle of the street used for safety zone.

All well

I arose early and changed tire covers with LeGrand, wrote up my journal for more than a week from memory.

I had my car greased & oil changed Mileage 3108 miles.

I gave letter to LeGrand authorizing a reduction in interest from 10 to 8% from July 10th 1930 on note of $8500.00.

In the evening LeGrand & Ina took us to the Angelus Temple where we saw & heard Amy McPherson’s [manerism?]. We went & Saw the Palm Gardens at Hotel Ambasador.

6 July 1930 • Sunday

Glendale, Cal.

LeGrand & Clarence Silver took their cars and with them Mother & I, Ina & LeGrand Jr. Mamie & Clarence Jr., Nerva, Sarah & Ruby and we went to San Diego & Tia Juana, Mex. 150 miles south of Los Angeles. We returned home about midnight. <LeGrand was sustained as Bp. Glen ward today unbeknown to him as he was away with us in San Diego.>

7 July 1930 • Monday

All well.

I took Ina, Mother, Nerva, Sarah [page break] and Ruby down into Glendale Business district to do some trading, and while waiting for them I wrote up my journal for the past two days. I wrote letters home &c.

8 July 1930 • Tuesday

Glendale, Cal.

All well.

Weather fine.

I took my folks in my car leaving Glendale about 8:00 A.M. and drove to Long Beach. I left Mother with her sister in Long Beach and took Nerva, Sarah & Ruby on to Wilmington Harbor where we got ship for Catalina sailing at 10:10 A.M. Catalina is 29 miles from the Harbor and requires about 2 hrs 15 min. to make the trip. Cost there and return 2.25 each. We went on the glass bottom boat and saw the submarine gardens at a cost of 75¢ each. We dined at the Boo’s cafeteria. Visited Souviner Shops, & places of interest. Returned leaving at 3:45 and arriving at Wilmington harbor at 6: P.M.; thence to Long Beach and got Mother and on home to Glendale. I administered to Aunt Annie Steed.

All well as usual

Good weather

I spent the forenoon at home. I took Mother and the three girls to the Chinese Theater & saw Devil Angels. Remained home in the evening.

10 July 1930 • Thursday

Glendale, Cal.

All well

Pleasant weather.

I took Mother, Ina & the three girls down to Glendale business district to shop. Tried to find a white dress for Mother.

I remained home while Mercedese took her mother & my folks in LeGrand’s DeSoto 6 sight seeing. I did some writing & studying. Later, LeGrand took Mother, Nerva, Mercedese & Me to L.A. The girls [page break] went shopping, LeGrand made some business calls and we called at Pres McMurrins home and at Pres Rey Pratts home but both were absent so that I got to see only their wives & children. After returning home I took Ina & some of her children down through the business district of Glendale in my car, on errands. I wrote to Ray.

All well

Pleasant weather <but warm.>

I played an early morning game of golf with LeGrand, Alex. & Elmer.

I remained home writing & studying in the forenoon. After luncheon I took Mother and the girls up into Griffiths Park. Later LeGrand & Ina went with us inspecting the beautiful homes in Beverly Hills and other residential districts. We took dinner out and went to a late show in Los Angeles.

12 July 1930 • Saturday

Glendale, Cal.

Hot weather.

I took Mother, Nerva, Sarah Ruby & Marian to the three resorts on the Beach, Santa Monica, Ocean Park & Vinice. We then went into Los Angeles and visited the Exposition Park, museum <&c> Took supper out & returned home at 6 P.M.

LeGrand & I went to the Stake House to a Stake Priesthood Meeting, the first Session of the Hollywood Stake Conference. Pres Grant was present and the meeting was conducted under his direction. He & I each spoke 20 min.

13 July 1930 • Sunday

Glendale, California

Hot day.

All well.

LeGrand & I attended three public Conference meetings and I spoke at each. Pres Grant was present and spoke at each meeting & he directed. Mother [page break] Sarah & Ruby attended afternoon and evening meetings, Sarah as a member of the General Board of Y.L.M.I.A. spoke in the evening. LeGrand offered the closing prayer of one meeting. Between afternoon & evening meetings we went out to Ocean Park & saw a new House built by Claud Richards for which he is asking $56,000. I treated to be family to supper at an inn.

14 July 1930 • Monday

All well.

I played a game of golf with LeGrand & his Sons LeGrand & LaMonte. We then made ready and soon after 10 A.M. We started for home via San Francisco, We went to Santa Monica Beach and from there along the Ocean front to Venturia thence on through Santa Barbara toward San Francisco, Staying at a camp at Pismo Beach,

15 July 1930 • Tuesday

Pismo Beach, Cal.

We have had it pleasant since we left Glendale and last night it was cold & we had a fire to keep warm. Our journey yesterday was most pleasant.

This day we left the main Highway No 101 at Salinas and went to Monterey, west to coast. We made the 17 mile drive around the Peninsula of Monterey and on to Santa Cruze. From there we visited the big trees and on to the Big Basin or Park which was a mountaneous ride. We saw large trees and a deer ate lettuce from Ruby’s hand. We continued on towards Frisco & reached Saratoga at the foot of the mountain about 5:00 P.M. [page break] Here we took supper and then continued on to within about 20 miles of San Francisco where we stayed in cabins for the night. It was cold out doors.

16 July 1930 • Wednesday

20 mi. so. Frisco. Cal.

We arose early and drove into Frisco before people or business was much astir. We went up Mission Street and through the business district to the Alameda Peor, thence back through Market Street to the Twin Peaks. Here it was so foggy we could see none of the City. We went from here to the Golden Gate Park and through the Park to the Cliff House on the Coast. We had breakfast here and thence went via the Presidio Drive to the Peor and from there crossed to Oakland, thence to Berkley & saw the stadium and school buildings, and on to Sacramento the Capital of the State. He[re] I had my car greased at a cost of 75¢. We took dinner and went on to Colefax and Stayed about 3 miles beyond at a new Camp & we were comfortable.

We started traveling about 5:00 A.M. Arrived at Reno Nevada about [blank]

We went on to Elko for the night without incident. Here we stayed at the Municipal Camp and I had my car greased.

18 July 1930 • Friday

All well

Weather pleasant.

We left Elko about 5:00 A.M. Mt. Time. and arrived home about 2: P.M. West of Grantsville I picked up an 8d nail [page break] which gave us our first puncture the Car has had in 4500 miles of travel. Unloading, cleaning car &c & ourselves took most of the remaining time of the day.

We have had a pleasant 18 days trip very much enjoyed especially by our daughters. Our car is a delight. We are glad to be home, the Civil Center of America.

We are very grateful to the Lord for his preserving care over us preserving us from accident, and for giving to us this beautiful outing.

19 July 1930 • Saturday

I had my car laundered and had some work done on it taking the rattle out of it. Attended to some matters of business, did some book work, studying &c.

20 July 1930 • Sunday

I took my car and with me, Mother, Ruby, Estella Lee & at Ogden got Edna & went up to Tremonton and administered a blessing unto our daughter who was nearing time of Confinement. Mother & I went on up to Fielding & Saw my Sister Alice who is 81 years of age. We returned home in the evening except Mother who remained with; Estella. We arrived home at 11:00 P.M.

21 July 1930 • Monday

Home.

I went to the Temple and looked after the accumulated mail &. Toward evening my daughter Ruby & I played a game of golf.

At about 11:40 P.M. Mother called from Tremonton saying that Estella [page break] had given birth to a fine baby boy at about 11:25 P.M.

22 July 1930 • Tuesday

Home.

I took Ruby and Mamie to Tremonton, and saw Estella and her fine baby and brought Mother home with us.

23 July 1930 • Wednesday

I played a game of golf with Joseph Anderson in the morning.

I assisted my Son Joel as Bishop in administering to a Sister McArthur & to Orson Allen.

24 July 1930 • Thursday

At Home.

I spent the forenoon at home-

In the afternoon I took Mother, Ruby, & Edna to a show. Members of the family came in to see us in the evening. A rather tame 24th of July.

25 July 1930 • Friday

Warm weather

I went to the Temple in the morning where I spent a busy day, letter writing, writing up my journal &c. Bro. Christensen & I administered to his Sister who is going to undergo an operation for the removal of her tonsils &c Wrote to Ray

26 July 1930 • Saturday

I played golf with F. Y & Jn. H. Taylor Attended to items of business & work about home. In the evening I took Mother & Barbara for a ride We had dinner at the Chicken Inn on Hyland Drive. Later we went to a show at Rialto & enjoyed it.

I went to the Holy Cross Hospital and [page break] administered to my grand son Keneth Tate who this A.M. had his appendix removed and another major operation performed. I also assisted a Bro. Adamson in administering to his little boy.

27 July 1930 • Sunday

I attended 27th ward S. School. Also Tabernacle Services & offered the invocation, Pres Ivins presided & Levi E. Young was the Speaker.

28 July 1930 • Monday

I played golf with F. Y. & J. H. Taylor & Jos. Anderson. Towards Evening I went to Ogden & met Spencer Taylor at the Farr Park. I took Mother, Oliver & wife & boy, Ruby & Delpha Card. We called at the Hinckley place of business after 6: P.M. & got Edna. We had a good supper & Spencer took Ruby, Delphia & Barbara with him to Tremonton. Oliver & [I] Sat up until about midnight Considering the affairs of the Richards Motor Co.

29 July 1930 • Tuesday

Warm weather.

I spent some time at the Temple.

Mother, Bro. Jos. Christensen & I went to Z.C.M.I. & selected carpeting for the three reception rooms on 2nd floor. Mother & I bought a Chair & Stool for the front room at Standard Furniture Co for $29.50. We spent the evening at home. C. C. Richards’ wife died to-day.

30 July 1930 • Wednesday

I this day paid to Z.S. Bk & Trust Co $500. on Principle of my note which they hold & a mortgage on our home to secure it. I also mailed $40.00 [page break] money order to my Son Ray who is in Germany.

I spent considerable time at the Temple.

31 July 1930 • Thursday

I attended the funeral services of Sister C. C. Richards held in 21st ward chapel.

I took Mother & Sister Nerva. Took Mother to E A Smith home at conclusion of services. Went to the Temple where I spent the afternoon. I wrote to Ray.
