Attended meeting of the Twelve & Presidency & Patriarch in the temple from 10:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. lunch served as usual between one & two P.M. Attended to business down town before returning home and at home worked on my books, correspondence.
Received appointment with Pres. J. G. Kimball to Union Stake and arranged to take 2:15 P.M. train tomorrow
Mother, Lucena & smaller children & Sarah started for Salt Air at 4:30 P.M. I worked at my desk until about 10:00 P.M. Called on Asenath.

I arose before 6:00 A.M. Had a cold water bath, shave &c. Went up to George’s & Joel’s and visited a short time. I dictated a letter of inquiry to James Paxman of Nephi, about Grand & San Juan Counties dry farm lands. Paving our street progressing nicely.
I took 2:05 P.M. train for LaGrand Oregon in company with Prest. J. G. Kimball, Sisters Hyde, & Empy of the Reliefsociety & Sister Cahoon of the Primary Boards. [p. 79]

Arrived at LaGrand, Ore. at 9:55 A.M. one hr late. We were met at Ry Station by Pres. Geo Stoddard with Auto. I stayed at his home.
Attended Stake Priesthood meeting at 10:00 A.M. at which I spoke and gave instructions. Attendance 47. Spoke on Care of the Lessor Priesthood, advancing the members of Lesser to Higher Priesthood &c.
At 2 P.M. meeting the attendance was 120. The three sisters & I spoke, Pure Religion & undefiled. Relief work & Primary work such. Each organization touches the individual from 4 to maturity & each does his part in conversion or establishing faith &c.

Beautiful day.
Attended forenoon, afternoon & evening meetings and spoke at the two latter. At afternoon I occupied 60 min. Subject. Gospel one only. What it is. The plan of life. High Ideals. For me every law & for you.
At night 20 min on Character Bldg. [p. 80] Between meetings I administered a blessing to Sister Florence M. Stoddard who is nearing maternity, assisted by her husband. Had a good conference Sunday. 415 present in forenoon about the same in afternoon, fewer at night.
I took 8:30 P.M. train for home. The other people went west to Portland.

Arrived home on 4:35 P.M. train. Met a Mr. Murray of Montana on train and had a gospel conversation with him and gave him some gospel tracts.

My sister M. A. Grover was operated upon last Saturday 5th Had a tube inserted into the stomach through which to receive nourishment as her throat precluded the taking it the natural way.
I attended a meeting in the Presidents office where we listened to Elder J. E. Talmage read from his manuscript of [p. 81] “The Life of Christ.[”]
I attended a missionary meeting in the temple annex and assisted in setting apart a company of Missionaries to the States and I instructed them. I set apart the following,
1. Elizabeth Marie Edler of Fountain Green, Utah, to Eastern States.
2. Fern Riches of Nephi to Cent. States.
3. Alfred Armstrong of Basalt Ida., to Central States.
I sent flowers to my sister at the hospittal and intended to go see her but on consulting with the Doctor, he suggested that I wait another day.
Alice & I accompanied our daughter Lucena to Ry. Station on her way home.
My son George & family took supper with us and stayed the evening.
I worked a couple or three hours on front lawn resodding where killed out.

I arose at 5:00 A.M. and worked on front lawn about 2½ hrs. Bathed, shaved &c. Worked at my [p. 82] desk.
I went to the L.D.S. hospittal and administered to my sister Asenath. Her condition very precarious. Attended my Circle meeting in the temple and Ensign Stake Priesthood meeting in 21st ward house.

I attended Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.
I performed the marriage ceremony of Lucy Steed & Wm Howard Umbleby in Salt Lake temple.
Bought two music records while getting Ambrola brush repaired.
Alice & Ruby went to Farmington with Aunt Maria Clark ostensibly to call on Aunt Annie & the newly wedded couple. Took 8 P.M. train. Returned about midnight

June Conference of Y.M. & Y.L. M.I.A. & Primary Conferences on. Many meetings.
I attended Conjoint M.I.A. officer’s meeting in Assembly [p. 83] Hall from 9:30 to 11 A.M. and Primary meeting in Barratt Hall from 11 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Dined with Primary officers & Pioneers at Social Hall from 1 to 2:30 P.M.
Attended Contest in Public Speaking from 3 to 5 P.M. at P.B. Bldg. Spent the evening home, reading, writing &c. Wrote to my Son LeGrand. Letter from LeGrand & Ina to Geo. & Edith of May 26th received to-day.
These are times of great anxiety for the people of the U. States, Sec. of State Wm Jennings Bryan recently tendered his resignation which was promptly accepted by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. The papers are full of the current news and I rarely mention these incidents of history in my journal as the records will be kept as History by the historians.

Home. All usually well at our home. My sister Asenath and my Niece Dossie Barker are at the hospittal. I called on and administered to them.
Attended Y.M.M. Conference meetings in forenoon, afternoon [p. 84] and Conjoint tryout in Assembly Hall at night. Good meetings. Lucy Steed Umpleby & husband staid with us over night. We had other visitors during the day. Wm. O. Robinson & wife took supper with us.

I attended three of the public conference meetings held in the Large Tabernacle to-day. Had Pres. Baxter of Woodruff & his wife to our home for dinner. My son George & family took dinner & supper with us.

Alice & I spent the day at Farmington, called at Jos. S Clarks’s, F D Steeds, J. H. Robinson’s & J E Robinsons. Took dinner at F. D. Steeds & Supper at J H Robinson’s. Obtained some genealogical information of the Robinson family and learned that Henry Robinson’s wife Romina’s grandfather was a Gill & may be of the same stock as my grandmother Ann Gill Longstroth. [p. 85] Returned home 10:40 P.M.

I spent the forenoon home at my desk. I paid my life insurance premium to Columbian Life Ins. Co.
Assisted in setting apart a company of missionaries and I set apart the following.

I attended a committee meeting of the members of the Twelve at the Presidents Office from 3 to 6 P.M hearing Elder Talmage read from the manuscript of his history, “The Life of Christ.” I went to Salt Air on the 6:30 P.M. train and took supper with my folks who had gone out on an earlier train. Had a nice time. George & Joel with their families were there and Joel treated us to the several shows i.e. several of them.

Asenath still very sick at hospittal.
I met Pres. Lyman & Pres Hyrum Grant of Davis Stake at the former’s office at 9:00 A.M. consideration of the proposed reorganization of the Davis Stake Presidency & division of the stake. I had been appointed to Tooele with Pres. B. H. Roberts but Pres. Lyman said he wanted me to go with him to Davis. At our weekly Council meeting which lasted from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Pres. Penrose was appointed to go with Pres. Lyman to Davis, H J Grant to Tooele & I to Uintah in Jos. F. Smith Jrs. place he having sickness at home, not able to fill the appointment.
At this meeting Pres. Jos. F. Smith who just returned from the Sandwitch Islands proposed that we build a temple in Laii, Hawaii costing perhaps $25,000 the Sugar plantation & natives about [p. 87] nine thousand strong can do it. It was unanimously agreed upon.
I left the temple at 3 P.M. and went home & made ready and left town on 5:15 P.M. R.G.W. train No 2 for Mack, thence to Vernal. Pres. Rulon S. Wells & Sisters Filo T. Farnsworth of the Reliefsociety and Sister Bennion of the Primary Board accompanying me.
We detrained at Mack Colorado at 3:30 A.M. 40 min late

I arrived at Mack at 3:30 A.M. went to the hotel and read &c until breakfast time. The others went to bed. I wrote up my journal for yesterday while here & wrote a letter home. We took train at 8:15 A.M. and arrived at Watson the terminus at 12:30. Left on Auto owned by Ry Co. My pass acceptable at 1:30 pm and reached Vernal at 5:30. We were met at Auto station by Pres. Don B Colton & certain Sisters. Sisters Farnsworth & Bennion went with the Sisters & Pres. Colton took Pres Wells & me to his home where we were comfortably cared for. A contest for Goddes of Liberty & Ball on. I [p. 88] retired early & had good nights sleep.

Am well & happy.
Attended 9 A.M. Primary meeting and regular Conference meeting at 10 A.M. Was one of the speakers and as ward teaching was featured in this meeting I occupied 35 minutes on that subject. Had good liberty of thought & expression. At the 2 P.M. Conference meeting the work of the Reliefsociety & Primary was featured. The sisters, a recently returned missionary (Woolley) & Pres. Wells were the speakers.
At 4:30 I attended another session of the Primary convention and later with Prests. Wells & Colton walked down to the ball ground & witnessed two or three innings of a ball game. We also walked over to the County Court house & grounds, thence home. A concert is scheduled for the evening. Pres. Wells & I remained at Pres Coltens and retired at 10 P.M. Good sleep & rest until 5:30 AM.

Awoke at 5:30, arose at 6:20 A.M. Wrote up my journal &c
I attended a meeting of Reliefsociety [p. 89] workers at 9 A.M. and addressed the meeting. Subject Word of Wisdom and the accomplishments of the organizations. What the woman of the world might do. At 10:30 A.M. conference meeting the attendance was 1185 Sacrament administered. I occupied 25 min. Subject, Primary work. Sister Benion of the Primary Gen. Bd. told me I spoke just perfectly lovely and she just wanted to hug me; quite a compliment. At 12:15 I attended a Seventies meeting and addressed the meeting for about 15 min on missionary work. Good freedom of thought & speech.
At 2:00 P.M. meeting the attendance was 1230. Stake population 3500. I was the concluding speaker and occupied about 40 minutes. I admonished those eligible by age to register first opportunity and not lose an opportunity to cast the vote in favor of temperance & good order. There is too much lethargy on the part of our people in these matters especially the women. The enemy is awake & alert always and wins out some times on that point. I also read from Matt. 5:1, 2 and 7:21 to end. It means you & me. What necessary to salvation besides faith & ordinances. I had [p. 90] good liberty & enjoyed my talk.

After this meeting which concludes the conference Pres. Wells & I went with Pres. Colton & wife in a brother Calder’s Car down to their creamery where they manufacture & sell cheese, butter, Icecream Sody water, root-beer &c and we had our fill of cheese, Icecream & soda water all of which is best quality. We then went up on to the new high line canal in course on construction & saw what is being done. Pres. Wells & I on invitation took luncheon with Bro. & Sis. Jesse Winter Smith & spent the evening there until about 10 P.M. He is a son of S. H. B. Smith deceased & she the daughter of Sister Vickers of California near San Jose, her maiden name was Roche. Bro Smith is an engineer, civil.

Took Auto stage leaving vernal at 7:00 A.M. for Watson the Uintah Ry. terminal arriving there at 10:45 A.M. On the stage besides the driver were Pres. Wells, Bp Paul Jones & a Miss Alice Walters of Vernal on her way to Elco. Nevada. [p. 91]
We left Watson at 1:00 P.M. and reached Mack Col. at 5:00 P.M. on Schedule time. Pres. Wells took 6:16 P.M. train for Grand Junction where he is to take No 1 at 1:00 A.M. for home. I took room & supper at Uintah Ry Co. Hotel $1.50 Before supper I brushed my clothes, blacked my shoes, washed, shaved, changed linen &c after Supper wrote up my journal for yesterday from memorandum.
Yesterday assisted by Pres Wells & Stake Presidency I administered to Sister Maggie Ross who is afflicted with Goiter which impairs her hearing, her vision & her general health.
I ordained Thomas E. Kidd of Ashley ward a bishop and set him apart to preside over the Ashley ward and set apart Elias S. Winn First Counselor & John O Evans Second Counselor in the bishopric.
It requires 786 miles to make the round trip from Salt Lake to Vernal & return.

I took No 5 train due to leave Mack at 5:04 for Salt Lake. [p. 92]
Pres. Wells who went to Grand Junction last Night failed to get a birth on No 1 train so went in on No. 5. We reached Salt Lake at 4:30 P.M. All usually well Only Mother & Ray at home. Others in Canyon.

My daughter Nerva, her husband and two youngest children surprised us by coming in from Tooele by Auto in the morning before breakfast and remained until 7 P.M.
I visited the L.D.S. Hospittal and called on my niece Dossie Barker, Madaline Droubay & my sister Asenath and administered to the latter. My sister Nerva went with me to my home from hospittal I attended my Circle meeting. Watered lawn, read paper &c. Our children came from the canyon in the early evening.

Attended Weekly Council meeting in temple from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. We finished reading Elder Talmage’s manuscript of the book “The Life of Christ.”
I attended to some business down town and went with my family to the Salt Air resort where the Richards’ family reunion was held on this the 111th birth day anniversary of Willard Richards.

I assisted in setting apart six missionaries to Scandinavia & Sweden. I set apart the following.
1. Peter Anderson of Waterloo ward
2. Svante Alfred Erickson of S. Lake
3. Andrew P. Anderson, Miller ward.
All the above to Sweden.
Pres. Lyman set apart the others. I gave them instructions.
I repaired lawn mower & did other job work at home.
Went up to L.D.S. Hospittal and administered to my sister Asenath who is in a critical [p. 94] condition.
I wrote out for Geo. H. Brimhall Sixty words on Success Defined and How Attained as fol.
We are Gods in embryo. Not until we have become Gods in verity will we have attained success in its fullest sense.

This is the 71st Anniversary of the day of the Prophets martyrdom. I took 8 A.M. train for Ogden in company with Pres. B. H. Roberts where we attended North Weber Stake conference. At 10:00A.M. meeting The authorities were sustained. The speakers were in order as fol. 1- Pres. Wotherspoon, myself & B H Roberts. I occupied 30 min. Subject. We all desire Eternal life Gods most choice blessing to man.
Would a man learn & acquire a profession of any kind if he did no more in the way of preparation therefore than we are doing in preparation for Eternal life. We have to study, pray & work.
We learn through our religion the way to obtain Eternal life, the Gospel plan, and we are urged to do the things necessary and to refrain from doing what would hinder us. “What I most need.” Emerson. The Gospel restrains us on one hand & encourages us [p. 96] on the other hand to do what we need to do. We are well taught but have need of being impressed with the necessity for doing as well as we know.
We took dinner at Pres. James Wotherspoons. At 2 P.M. meeting Pres. Roberts occupied the time 70 minutes. Daniels interpretation of the dream of Nebuchadnezar & its application. After meeting the Bishopric of 10th ward took me in auto up to the Hermitage in Ogden Canyon and we had a trout dinner. Pres Roberts returned to S.L. on 4:00 P.M. train. I spoke on the subject of character in the 10th ward at night. Returned home on 9 P.M. S.L. & Ogden train.

I spent the day at home working at my desk, a profitable day.
in the evening my wife and I went up to the LD.S. Hospittal and I administered to my sister Asenath who is sorely afflicted. On our way back walking, we called on Alice’s brother Oliver LeGrand [p. 97] and family on K. St. and he brought us home in a Ford.

I attended Quarterly meeting of the Twelve in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 7:30 P.M. with an hour’s recess. I had good gospel conversation on car home and with same parties two men from St. Paul, returning to main St. They had gone up to Fort Douglas & back while I got lunch.
Elder Rudger Clawson leaves to-morrow for Atlanta Ga. to dedicate a meeting house and Elder Geo. Albert Smith leaves Thursday for Eastern Canada with a view of looking the ground over with the thought in view of later organizing a new mission.
The City workmen to-day on my request took out the four Poplar trees in front of our house & lot preparation to grading & planting anew to lawn. A few days more and Third Avenue will be paved clear through. [p. 98]

I had cement walk put in front of our gate from sidewalk to curb $3.56. Arranged for $25.00 worth of cement work to be done at back and on East side of the house, cellar steps &c. Also arranged with same party Ed. Canterbury to plant lawn in front, Street parking between walk & curb.
I spent the day at home alone reading & studying while the family were in the canyon. I attended my Circle in the evening.
