Gt. Falls, Mont.
All well.
We left the Falls on regular 8 A.M. train. Arrived in Butte about 3:30 P.M. and left Butte at 5:20 P.M. for home. Alice and I went up town at Butte and bought a few little things for the grand children. [page break]
2 September 1923 • Sunday
Arrived from Canada 9 A.M. We were met at the Ry station by Nina & children and Estella with Nina’s car. Found Jack and Ruby at our home. Jack has been operated upon for nose trouble. Weather is pleasant. With Jack and Ruby, Mother & I went down to Sugar House & saw LeGrand and family and Mamie and family. My son Oliver who expects to go upon a mission in about two weeks had a number of items to talk over and we sat up until nearly one o’clock.

Home.
Family well.
Weather pleasant.
I spent the time from 8:45 A.M. to 3:15 P.M. in the Temple. I went with Mother and other family members to Saltair & had a bath. Ray is in Inkom where he has been for a week or longer.

4 September 1923 • Tuesday
I assisted Oliver to get a trunk & to get his papers made out to apply for a passport. He leaves for Germany Sep. 24 unless he goes early to sightsee.
I went to the Co.op furniture store and made selections of Desk, chairs &c for my consulting room & Recorders room & Typists room &c.
Arranged with Bro. Don Carloss Young for an interview and [page break] an inspection of the plans for the Arizona Temple at Mesa. Pres. Grant has requested me to go over the plans. I spent 2½ hours with Architects Young & Hansen and found them of a splendid type.

Home.
All well.
Fine weather.
I was the speaker at the Temple services in the morning.
Made a talk before the General Board of the Primary on the Garments by special request. I sealed up 38 couples and 33 children to parents. Remained at the Temple until the evening session was finished.
6 September 1923 • Thursday
Attended Temple meeting as usual at 8:25 and sealed a couple Bro. Woodruff and Sister Crawford before going to the regular Council meeting of the Presidency, the Twelve and the Patriarch which is held weekly in the Presidency’s Council Chambers.
Our meeting lasted from 10 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. barring about 30 minutes while we took lunch. I sealed 12 or 14 couples during the day. I wrote to Edna in evening.
7 September 1923 • Friday
I attended to my duties at the temple as usual. Attended to some business at the President’s office &c. I sealed a num[page break]ber of couples and children to parents both living and the dead. A busy day. I left the temple for home after 8 P.M.
8 September 1923 • Saturday
I called at the U.I.V. Co. office at 8 A.M. thence to the Temple. Spent the forenoon at the Temple and the afternoon at Liberty Park with the Richards family, 265 in number. Decided to meet same next year, Aug. 9, 1924, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Uncle Samuel W. Richards.

I took the O.L.S. 7:00 A.M. train for Brigham City accompanied by Bp. Jn Wells. We attended three sessions of conference and a special meeting of the Bishops & Counselors. I spoke at all meetings. Took dinner & supper with Bro & Sis. Jensen.
I spoke at all meetings. Bp Wells did the same. We took 8:45 P.M. OSL train for home.
10 September 1923 • Monday
I had a filling removed & a new one put in one of my wisdom teeth. With Patriarch H. G. Smith called at Bro. Ramsey’s home and inspected the painting Joseph & the Angel Moroni. This by request of Pres. Grant. Offered suggestions for improvement.
Attended to my work at the Temple &c. Answered President Grant reporting favorably on purchase of the painting for Hawaiian temple. [page break]

I went to the Temple on 7:30 car. I spent two hours at the U.I.V. Co’s office considering conditions there. I am the President of the Company. After supper my son George & his wife took mother and me in their auto up to Farmington to see the results of the recent flood so far as observable. One is impressed with the destructive elements of water.
12 September 1923 • Wednesday
I have a severe cold and hoarseness. The weather for some time has been summer like. Attended U.I.V. Co directors meeting. Mr. Alex Brier, one of the directors was appointed manager of the Company. I sealed more than thirty couples and many children, all but a few were living. I came to the Temple before 8 A.M. and remained until about 8 P.M. I usually put in from 12 to 15 hours, three days a week and full days on the other days of the week.
13 September 1923 • Thursday
Weekly council meeting postponed until tomorrow.
I ordained my son Oliver an Elder and set him apart as a missionary to the Swiss &German mission. Oliver went through the temple for his own endowments this day. My son Joel was the speaker at the Temple [page break] meeting and he went through the Temple accompanying Oliver.
My sons LeGrand & Joel went with me to see D. H. Livingston at his office at 4 P.M. by appointment. He says he intends to secure us on my our investment in oil lands by giving us an interest in another 640 Acres on the Fowler Dome which has been designated by the Geologist a Mr. [blank] as a field of oil &c. &c.
With Alice I attended the funeral services of Sister Mary Miller, wife of Uncle Arnold D. Miller and was one of the speakers. Later we attended the farewell reception tendered to Clyde David of our ward.
14 September 1923 • Friday
Warm day.
Attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Sealed nine or ten couples & attended to other ordinance work, including [6 words redacted relating to a temple ordinance].
At meeting today I received an appointment with Elder Ballard to attend the Morgan Stake Conference tomorrow & next day and if deemed wise reorganize the Stake Presidency.
Members of my family are invited out t[o] Sarahs home tomorrow afternoon, myself included. These clash. In the evening I wrote to my daughter Edna. [page break]
15 September 1923 • Saturday
I took 7 A.M. O.S.L. train for Morgan in company with Elder M J Ballard and other convention workers. We arrived in Morgan at 9:40 A.M. and we were driven to the place of meeting in Stake Conference—Convention. I was the first speaker and occupied 30 minutes, subject assigned me “Responsibility of parents to make L.D. Saints of their children. At 11:40 Pres. Heiner Elder Ballard and I met in council to consider the reorganization of the Morgan Stake Presidency. Pres Heiner pleaded so hard to not take this action at this time, we let it go by. Taking the train at 4:27 we arrived in Salt Lake at 6:30 P.M.
With other members of the family I went out to my daughter Sarah’s in Mill Creek and spent the evening very pleasantly returning home at 12 o’clock. My son Oliver was taken with a violent vomiting spell about 3:30 and it continued off & on until towards 6 A.M. I administered to him. There were at the reception last night at Sarah’s, her family, Mother & me, Geo, & Edith, LeGrand & Ina & Noraine & Marian, Joel & Georgina, Mamie &Clarence, Lucena & Rega, Nina, Oliver, Ray, Joel Tate and Bro. & Sis. And. Kimball.
16 September 1923 • Sunday
A cooler day than usual. The forenoon I spent at home. Studied the Subject of the Constitution. Attended Tabernacle services. Reuben E. Clark spoke upon the Subject of “The Constitution.”
I went to bed early chilling with a cold, my son George & Geo. L. Tate administered to me and I had a fairly good night.
Geo L. & Nerva & children arrived from Inkom, Idaho about 4:30 P.M. They spent Friday or Saturday night with Ruby at Cornish. Nerva came that far on the train Friday and George came by car to Cornish Saturday. They are moving down, however Geo L. intends to return to Inkom to wind up his business mercantile.
17 September 1923 • Monday
Am feeling some better to day. I came down town with Nina on her way to work. Bought two pairs of Duofold garments at knitting store for $10.00 special price. My five sons and I sat for a group photograph at the Thurman’s art gallery.
I have had pains and aches in my legs of late especially in my right knee. I called upon Dr. Calderwood to-day and had an examination. He said my kidneys seem to be all right. Test the blood pressure and said it seemed to be normal. Said [page break] my lameness might be caused from a dead tooth or from Gall bladder trouble.
I am nearly sick with a cold. Retired to my bed early, indisposed. Mother, Oliver & other family members went to the Paramount Show at 9:30 P.M., thence to Joel’s for ice cream & cake &c.
18 September 1923 • Tuesday
Geo L. Tate left by auto for Inkom this morning.
I went to the temple as usual this morning though feeling much indisposed. Remained at the temple until about 4:30 when I met my son Oliver and with him attended to some business. I spoke at Oliver’s farewell social or testimonial held in the 27th Ward House in the evening at which all my sons were present and five or six of my daughters. After the testimonial some of our friends repaired to our home where we were served with cake & ice cream and some of the young folks danced until 12 o’clock.
19 September 1923 • Wednesday
Fine weather.
My cold still on.
My son Oliver leaves for a mission to S. Germany this evening accompanied by Clyde Davis. They are going a couple or three days ahead of the Main Company to visit some of the Eastern cities off the line of travel. They are booked [page break] to sail from Montreal Sep. 28. I attended to my duties at the temple as usual including the sealing of about 27 couples of the living and several of the dead and a number of children to parents. Went home with Oliver about 4:30. Mother & I accompanied Oliver & Clyde as far as Ogden. Leaving Ogden at 11:15 P.M. we reached Salt Lake About 12:30 A.M. My son George met us at the station and took us to the L.D.S. Hospital where our daughter Sarah was being operated upon for appendicitis. We were there when she came from the operating room. Doctor Andrews did the operating, assisted by Doctors Anderson, Brown and Shepherd. We could do nothing for her as she was still under the anesthetic so we went home at about 1:45 A.M.
20 September 1923 • Thursday
I went to the Temple as usual attended the morning meeting and sealed about ten couples & some children. Attended the weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. until about 1:00 P.M. I made two visits to the hospital and administered to my daughter Sarah who has been having hard gas pains most all day.
Mother was with her from about 11 A.M. to 8 P.M. when we left for home. [page break]
I wrote letters to Ruby, Edna and Oliver.
21 September 1923 • Friday
This day is the Centennial anniversary of the appearing of the angel Moroni to Jos. Smith.
I spoke at the Temple meeting on the above named text.
I set apart four missionaries to foreign lands and gave instructions to the company of eight or ten missionaries and their friends. I attended to the sealings of seven or 8 couples and several children to parents. Attended to other important business and visited my daughter Sarah at the temple hospital. Sarah feels very much better to-day. I think she is making good progress.
Mother was with her from about 11 A.M. to 4 P.M.
I left the Temple at 10:05 P.M.
22 September 1923 • Saturday
My cold & cough still holding on in a distressing manner. Sarah’s condition improving. Yesterday, I administered to my Grand daughter Thelma. Several of the family have colds and kindred ailments just now. I attended to business at the Presidency’s offices and then went to the Temple where I worked at my desk. My son LeGrand went with me [page break] to the hospital to see my daughter Sarah.
I spent the evening at home reading, writing and studying. I wrote to my Sister Nerva in Los Angeles and to my son-in-law Oliver.
23 September 1923 • Sunday
Weather pleasant. My cold is bad. I had a spasm of coughing about 5 A.M. such as I have rarely ever had before. It is the Ensign stake conference to-day but I scarcely dare trust myself in meeting on account of of my coughing & spitting. I went to the Temple soon after 10 A.M. and considered the temple ordinances with a view to recommending to the Presidency a number of changes. At 1 P.M. I showed a company of 39 people, headed by my son Bp. LeGrand Richards of Sugar ward through the Annex and Temple requiring an hour and a half. I rode down to Mamie’s with LeGrand where Mother, Nina, Estella and Ray were and took dinner with them From there we went down to my daughter Nerva’s new home 1952 So. Main St. where Nerva & children are having spent last night there for the first time. We rode home with Nina and afterward Mother and I rode down to LeGrand’s & to Nerva’s with Geo. & Edith in their Ford Sedan in a rain storm. I had a [page break] bad night coughing.
24 September 1923 • Monday
I went to the temple this am and performed marriage. Bro. Nauman’s daughter to a Mr. Newlands?
I spent most of the day at the temple. Wrote letters to Messrs. Pane & Greenhalgh of Safford & to Andrew Kimball offering my land (120 Ac) and 18 shares of water in Ashurst, Arizona for $5000.
At night Mother gave my back & my chest a good rubbing with Rubifax. This was repeated in the morning.
25 September 1923 • Tuesday
My cold seems to be letting go its strong grip on my bronchials. I spent an hour or two with my daughter Sarah at the hospital. Attended to my work at the Temple leaving there about 7 P.M. Had bad cough through the night.
26 September 1923 • Wednesday
Stormy day.
Sister R. & I went to the Temple before 8 A.M. I set apart Lydia Brown Lund of 27th ward a temple worker, assisted by Israel Call. I instructed the Recorder to get a dozen cuspidors and distribute them where convenient to be used in annex rooms, approaches & in the temple. I gave instructions [page break] to have the same care in letting out the past books to workers as an exercise in a well managed library to know who receives the books & when & to see that they are returned each day & not taken outside the temple.
I sealed 24 couples living and about 50 children. Attended my circle meeting in the evening. On account of the repairs going on about the temple the circles have not been meeting for a number of weeks but they are now beginning again.
27 September 1923 • Thursday
I had a bad night of coughing. I went to the temple as usual and attended the temple meeting. Attended weekly council meeting, sealed eight or ten couples and a number of children &c. Visited my daughter Sarah at the hospital.
28 September 1923 • Friday
This is the day Oliver & others were to sail from Montreal for Liverpool, thence on to Swiss & German mission.
Last night I had mustard poultices on back & front all the night and then changed to lard and nutmeg poultices which I wore all the day. I use cough lozenges, cough syrup &c. My cough still hangs on. I presided at the Temple mor[page break]ning meeting as usual and spent the day in the Temple until the evening company got started on their way, after 7 o’clock P.M. Attended to sealings &c.
29 September 1923 • Saturday
Last night I had treatment for my bronchial trouble. This morning I asked Pres. Clawson to excuse me from attendance at So. Davis Stake Conference. He was at liberty so he could take my place.
I remained in bed all day and had treatments, poultices, rubbings trying to get at the seat of my cold & cough.
30 September 1923 • Sunday
I seemed to feel better this A.M., so arose, shaved & cleaned up &c. This being the last day excursion tickets to Portland are good and obtainable, I went to the depot with Mother & Ray and bought them tickets, Ray half fare and with them went to Woodscross. This was a start made by them to Portland on their tickets. The tickets are good for 30 days with stop over privileges. Nina took us to the station & then went on to Woods Cross and was there with her car when we arrived at 11:20 A.M. Returning we had car trouble a[n]d it was 2:50 when we got home. Clarence towed us in. [page break] At 6:30 Geo., with his car, and I went to the hospital and got our daughter Sarah and brought her to our home to stay for a time. It has been ten days since she had her operation.
My cold is not much improved. I hope it is some better. This evening I had hot packs put on back & front trying to break up my cough.
