Portland, Maine, Lafayette Hotel

Pres. Hart & I fasted until about 5:00 P.M. I stood the fast well, and am well generally.

Meetings were held in a Lodge Hall, or Temple as they choose to call it, one at 10:00 A.M. and the other at 2:00 P.M. Pres. Hart and I spoke at both meetings. There were seven Elders present besides Pres. Hart & me and they each spoke. There were about 25 or 30 present

At 9:00 A.M. we met as missionaries at the hotel and prayed and spoke all round closing the meeting about 12:30 or 1:00 P.M. A good spirit prevailed and good reports were made and good instructions were given at all the meetings.

2 June 1930 • Monday

Am. well.

Portland, Maine.

Pres. Hart & I left Portland for Bangor at 11:05 A.M. and arrived at 2:40 P.M. We were met at the Ry. Station by Elder Pulley of Logan, and we went to the Rooming House [blank] where we got rooms at $1.50 per day. I wrote up my journal for yesterday. Before l[e]aving Portland I went out and bought a Road Atlas for Southern Canada and the United States giving the roads in detail with numbers, number of miles from place to place the cities passed through with their populations &c. Cost 75¢ This furnished [page break] me entertainment while on the train. I marked the route I am to take from Detroit to Salt Lake. Pres Hart & I called at the room of Elders Bonham & Pulley and spent an hour on such matters with them.

3 June 1930 • Tuesday

Bangor, Me.

Am well

Beautiful day

Pres. Hart, the missionaries & I held a meeting of about 2 hour’s duration in the forenoon. I wrote to my son Joel. We held public meeting at 2:00 and 7:30 P.M. with about twelve people present besides the four of us missionaries. I had good liberty and a good meeting was had. Praise the Lord.

4 June 1930 • Wednesday

Bangor, Main[e]

Am well, fine weather.

We took 4:05 A.M. train for St. John and arrived on schedule time at 10:40 A.M. and went to the Royal Hotel to stay. Cleaned up & we went to dinner. I wrote a 4 paged letter to Mother. We spent the afternoon writing, studying &c. Retired early.

5 June 1930 • Thursday

St. John N.B.

Weather warm & pleasant.

My health is good.

There are six Elders attending the conference. They are Jepperson, Dist Pres, Michalis, Moore, Jensen, Wright & Doxey. Pres. Hart & I were in meeting with the Elders about three hours in the forenoon. We held public meetings at 2:00 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. Three of the Elders, Pres Hart & I addressed the afternoon meeting. The other three Elders, Pres. Hart & I addressed the evening meeting and all spoke well. [page break] The attendance was about ten or twelve besides the Elders in the afternoon and 25 or 30 in the evening. The Lord helped us and we had excellent meetings.

6 June 1930 • Friday

St. John N.B. Canada,

Am well. Fine weather.

Pres. Hart and I took boat at 6:15 A.M. to cross the Bay of Fundy. We were on the boat about 3½ hours, landing at Digby where we got train for Halifax, N. Scocia, and reached Halifax at 6:00 P.M. Ry time. We went to the Carlton Hotel. After Supper we walked up on the hill and all the way around the fortification and had a splendid view of the City, the harbor, Dart Mouth, across the Bay &c Returning to the Hotel I did some writing in my journal &c. We have had some beautiful scenery all along the train travel of to-day and while on the boat the water was smooth and the ride pleasant.

7 June 1930 • Saturday

Halifax, N.S.

I spent the forenoon at the hotel reading, writing &c. I wrote a letter to my Son in Germany and one to my wife at home.

In the afternoon I was in meeting with Pres Hart and Elders Fisher, Raymond and Folsom for about 2½ hours.

In the evening I attended public meeting and was one of the Speakers. Had good liberty, many the Lord be praised. Attendance small. Pres. Hart was the last speaker and he ran over the time 20 min. He spoke well and held the audience. [page break]

8 June 1930 • Sunday

Halifax, N.S., Canada.

Am well

Beautiful weather.

President Hart and I, accompanied by Elders Fisher & Raymond left Halifax at 7:30 A.M. and arrived in Amhurst at about 12:30. We were met at the depot by Elders Henry and Phipps. We went to the Terrace Hotel where Pres. Hart & I registered for the night. Two other Elders met us later.

Our first meeting was held at 2:30 P.M. and there were eight in attendance besides the Elders. They were one woman and on[e] or two girls in their teens. The others were girls ranging down to about 7 yrs of age. Pres Hart, three of the Elders & I s[p]oke and we had an excellent meeting.

The country all through this Northwestern Country is beautiful with its lakes, bays, hills, timber, grass, downs, villages &c Picturesk

At the evening meeting the attendance was larger A good spirit prevailed. I was the concluding speaker, occupying about 45 minutes, Subject the Savior & the Prophet Joseph & Temple work. I had good liberty and satisfaction.

9 June 1930 • Monday

Amhurst, N.S. Canada.

Pres. Hart & I went with the other missionaries and sat for a group photo. We then went to the place of meeting and held a meeting of about three and a half hours duration. [page break]

Returning to the Terrace Hotel I wrote a letter to Mother and one to my son George. Pres. Hart & I took train for Quebec at about 8:00 P.M.

10 June 1930 • Tuesday

Pres. Hart & I arrived in Quebec abt 2:00 P.M. We spent the afternoon seeing the Town and took night train for Montreal.

11 June 1930 • Wednesday

Pres Hart & I arrived in Montreal about 7:00 A.M. We spent the forenoon seeing the City &c and the afternoon (3½ hours) in meeting with the missionaries 6 Elders & 2 sisters. At night we attended public about 55 or 60 present. Pres Hart & I speak at all meetings and as many of the Elders as there is time to give them. We had an excellent meeting last night. After meeting we administered to an invalid Sister &c. We were after Midnight getting to bed.

I received two letters from my son Joel and one from Pres Pond of the Northern States Mission.

12 June 1930 • Thursday

Montreal Canada

Am well

Weather beautiful

I wired Richards Motor Co as follows: “Order DeLuxe Eight. Green. Six wire wheels. Tires Six ply.” Had photo taken with group.

Pres. Hart & I left Montreal at 1:05 P.M. and arrived in Ottawa, the Dominion Capital at 5:00 P.M. [page break]

We spent an hour or two walking about the Government Grounds, the interior of the House of Parliament. We walked over into the business district got dinner & returned to the Hotel, Chateau Laurier where we are staying. I wrote up my journal, wrote to Mother, & to Ray & to Pres Pond. Received letters from each of them this evening.

13 June 1930 Ottawa. • Friday

We held meetings during the day, one with the Missionaries and two with the public, a busy and interesting occasion. We took train at 12:00 oclock midnight for Toronto arriving at 8: A.M.

14 June 1930 • Saturday

Am well, weather fine

Pres. Hart & I arrived in Toronto at about 8:00 A.M. We attended missionary meeting at 10: A.M. 17 present.

15 June 1930 • Sunday

Am well & happy.

Beautiful weather.

We held three public meetings & I spoke at each occupying about 45 minutes at each. I had good liberty. The Lord helped me, for which I am truly thankful.

16 June 1930 • Monday

Spent a busy forenoon at home of Pres. Hart & Family. Received a letter from my wife enclosing one from my son Ray who is is in Germany on a mission.

At about 12:00 noon, Pres & Sis Hart, Elders Young and Cullimore and I [page break] left Toronto in Pres. Hart’s auto for Hamilton. We arrived at 2:30 the appointed time for afternoon meeting. I spoke at both meetings and was greatly blessed of the Lord in my talks.

17 June 1930 • Tuesday

Hamilton

Am well

Beautiful day.

At the meeting last night I was presented with a silk book mark from the Old Testament Class of Hamilton, a young girl made a short speach of presentation and I responded.

I attended a 9:00 A.M. Meeting and occupied about 45 min giving instructions. I mailed a letter to my wife & one to Ray. We left Hamilton by auto at about 2:00 P.M. after driving up on to a high hill where we could see over the City and the Ontario Lake, a beautiful scene. We arrived in London, Canada at 5:30 P.M. having covered a distance of about 80 miles through beautiful Country, mostly paved road. We first called on the Elders and then went to the London Hotel. From here we went to a public meeting. I occupied about 40: minutes with good liberty, may the Lord be praised.

18 June 1930 • Wednesday

London, Canada

I am well and happy.

We had heavy rain during the night. It is still raining this morning and thundering intermitantly. We are to leave for Chatham at 10:00 A.M. This will be [page break] our last appointment of the series of the Canadian Mission and we will finish about 50 miles from Detroit where I am to get a car and drive it home. I wrote a letter to mother to post further along, probably at Detroit to-morrow. The rain and thunder are something fierce at this writing 8:30 A.M.

Later: We left London about 11:00 A.M. and arrived in Chatham at 1:00 P.M. in a heavy rain Storm. We took four of the Sisters with us and picked up two of the Elders on the way making ten of us missionaries in one car of two seats.

Pres. & Sis Hart & I put up at Hotel Rankin.

We had a meeting of the Missionaries at 2:00 P.M. and a public meeting in the evening at which meetings I was one of the Speakers.

19 June 1930 • Thursday

Chatham, Canada.

Pres. Hart & Wife Elders Young and [blank] and I in Pres. Hart’s car left Chatham at 5:00 A.M. and drove to Detroit about 50 miles. We were shown through the DeSoto factory with Elder Geo. Martin accompanying us. I got my Delux 8 released and at Noon accompanied by Bro Martin left Detroit for home. We drove to Chicago arriving there after dark, got some of Bro Martins effects and went on our way traveling night & day, arriving in Salt Lake at 6:00 A.M. Sunday the 22nd, Distance 1831 miles, We went 60 miles out of the way at Granger increasing the mileage to 1891 miles by car register. I cleaned up on my arrival, took a napp and went out and administered to Sisters Nobb & Bush. [page break] I was the Speaker in the Waterloo ward in the evening by invitation of my Son Oliver of the Bishopric.

23 June 1930 • Monday

I had a busy day at the Temple and took supper with my daughter Mamie.

24 June 1930 • Tuesday

Attended Quarterly meeting of the Twelve and assisted in setting apart a large company of missionaries, I sat apart seven or eight. Towards evening my son George, Mother, Nerva Tate, Ruby, Estella Lee & Alberta Gallacher went to Ogden where we met Edna & went to Farr Park and had a good supper. Returning home Ruby drove her car which had been at Hincklys garage for repairs.

25 June 1930 • Wednesday

I arose at 4:30 A.M. and had a busy day at the Temple. Many June marriages. Mother and I spent about twelve hours in the Temple.

26 June 1930 • Thursday

I met with Pres. Clawson & Elder D. O. McKay at 8: A.M. to consider the audit of the Church. At 9: A.M. met with the Twelve. At 10: A.M. met in regular weekly session of the Presidency & the Twelve until 1:00 P.M. I sealed a number of young people in marriage. We had a lengthy and busy day at the Temple.

I have obtained permission of the Presidency & of Pres Clawson to [page break] leave the first of the week for California and the appointment to attend the Hollywood Stake Conference July 12–13th Mother, Nerva, Sarah & Ruby are planning to go with me to California, by auto and it is our intention to see Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon and perhaps Grand Canyon of the Colorado on the way.

27 June 1930 • Friday

Home.

Weather warm

Mother & I spent a busy day at the Temple. The Temple closes to-day for Endowment work for the Summer cleaning. Baptisms will be administered tomorrow. The Temple will re open Aug 11th.

28 June 1930 • Saturday

Home.

All usually well, except that my son George is in bed with Sore throat, fever &c.

Mother & I spent a busy day making ready for our California trip. I took 2:00 P.M. train to Provo where I was met by Pres. Birch of Tintic Stake and I rode with him by auto to Goshen where we attended an evening meeting of the priesthood, 85 men in attendance. I was the closing speaker and occupied about 50 minutes with good liberty. After the meeting we rode back to Provo where Pres. Birch has his home & there spent the night.

29 June 1930 • Sunday

Provo.

Warm day.

I went with Pres Birch from Provo [page break] to Goshen where we attended forenoon & afternoon meetings of the Tintic Stake Conference. I spoke on both meetings occupying about 45 minutes at each. After the afternoon meeting rode with Pres Birch back to Provo where I took train for home.

30 June 1930 • Monday

Home

I attended to some business at the Temple and other places and made ready to leave early next morning for Southern Utah and California.
