1 October 1923 • Monday
I went to the Temple as usual and attended to correspondence and considered matters of importance with the Recorder. Arranged for having Temple Presidents room at the Annex further furnished &c.
I called on Dr. Gill Richards’ office and had my lungs and bronchial tubes examined and received prescription, which I got filled and before retiring to bed I fumigated my throat with two teaspoonfull in a qt. of hot water. I coughed a great deal during the night.
We had the ward teachers in the evening, Bros. Axel B. C. Olson & Bro. Nelson.
2 October 1923 • Tuesday
I attended Quarterly Con. of the Twelve, all but Bro. McKay being present. We were in session from 9:30 A.M. to about 4:00 P.M. I had a hair cut before going to meeting. Attended to [page break] desk work after meeting.
3 October 1923 • Wednesday
Presided at Temple meeting as usual. I went to the meeting of the Twelve, Seventies & Mission Presidents but had to leave twice on account of my cough. I did not go back after the second time. I sealed two or three couples but got Bros. Jos F. & H. G. Smith to seal the main company of about 41 couples living & a number of living children. I did some desk work and gave general supervision to the work. Attended my circle meeting in the evening.
4 October 1923 • Thursday
I presided at the Temple meeting as usual and attended the monthly fast meeting which is also a weekly business and prayer meeting of the Presidency, the Twelve & Patriarchs.
Mother & I rode with George & Edith to take Nerva & Thelma home. I had just a fairly good night after hot packs & other treatment.
5 October 1923 • Friday
I attended forenoon and afternoon meetings of Conference. I had to leave meeting at 3:35 in the afternoon as I felt my cough coming on.
I paid another $200. on my note at the Bank. It was 1850. It now is 1200. Geo & LeGrand are owing me to apply. [page break]
I made settlement with Oliver befor he left for a mission. Turned it all to the acct of LeGrand & Geo.
6 October 1923 • Saturday
I coughed considerably during the past night notwithstanding I received treatment for the cough.
Attended the conference meetings this day and was the first speaker at the afternoon session. I occupied 20 min. on Subject of “Salvation for the dead.” But for my hoarseness I got on nicely & having the amplifier in use I think I made the people hear. I praise the Lord for his help this day. We have had very good meetings during this conference. By Cablegram we are informed that the Ship “Montrose” on which our son Oliver Sailed from Montreal Sep. 28th land in Liverpool at mid night last night.
7 October 1923 • Sunday
Attended the two conference meetings and between and before & after, met the temple Presidents in the temple and talked over ordinance work. My cold is still bad.
With the radio amplifiers installed, the remarks of the brethren were distinctly heard by broadcasting, in the Ogden [page break] tabernacle as well as the Temple grounds here and the Assembly Hall.
8 October 1923 • Monday
I attended to important work at the Church offices building before meeting and at the Temple after meeting.
Attended special Priesthood meeting in the Assembly Hall at 10 o’clock A.M.
During the conference we have had much rain but it fell during the night time and the days have been most pleasant. The weather is turning cold today. We have had a good conference. I wrote to my son Oliver in the evening.
9 October 1923 • Tuesday
I attended to business at the Temple as usual.
In the evening Alice and I attended a banquet on the Hotel U. roof gardens given by Bp. C. W. Nibley. I think my cold is getting better.
10 October 1923 • Wednesday
I took 7:20 A.M. car for the Temple. Bp. Nibley was the Speaker at Temple meeting. I spent a busy day part of the time within and part outside of the Temple. I made purchase of a rug 12 x 16 at Z.C.M.I. for the Presidents Room for $150.00 and a table for the same room of H. Dinwoodys for $1.10.00. No 9.00 [page break] Purchased section in pullman to Portland for Mother, Ray and myself to use tonight. LeGrand & Ina, Clarence & Mamie, Joel & Georgina called in and visited with us. We took 11:30 train at 11:25 P.M. I did not cough as much as usual but had trouble breathing during the night.
11 October 1923 • Thursday
On train between Salt Lake and Portland. Left home about 11:30 last night. At about 3 A.M. our car was visited by robbers. One man gun in hand was discovered. The trio consisted of two colored men and a woman. They were put under arrest by a sheriff who happened to be on the next car forward a chair car. A pair of pants were among their lute. We count ourselves fortunate in getting off with our lives, cash and other valuables.
Our traveling is pleasant. A fan is in use in the pullman this afternoon. At Huntington, 3:45 P.M., Mt. time. I have written a letter to Sarah, Nina & Estella and addressed the envelope to Estella. Will try and mail it from this point.
12 October 1923 • Friday
We arrived in Portland on time 7:30 A.M. and got train for Eugene at 8:40 A.M. Arrived at Eugene at 1:30. We were met at the depot by our daughter Edna who was surprised to see me and delighted to see us all three. Charles came [page break] from his school about 4 P.M. I took some cold coming along on the train with the windows open. Edna & Mother stepped out a few moments & Charles & I were alone. I had a coughing spell come on and arose to step into the bathroom but before reaching there I turned dizzy & unconscious and fell to the floor. I was aroused to consciousness by Charles asking if he could not help me up. I received usual treatment and took K.N.O.K.A. Cold Tablets one every hour until five had been taken then one every three hours and two at bedtime. I had the best nights rest I have had for several weeks. The weather is delightful.
13 October 1923 • Saturday
Eugene, Oregon. Fine day.
Mother, Edna & I took a walk out to the University and back a distance of perhaps a mile there & returning. I spent my time nursing myself. Am strongly in hopes that my cough is going to yield to treatment, climate, altitude &c.
In the evening Mother, Ray, Chas and Edna went to a show while I retired to my bed. I had a coughing spell about 2:30 to 3:30 A.M. then had a good sleep again.
14 October 1923 • Sunday
Eugene, Oregon.
I am taking regular treatment for my Bronchial trouble & cough and I think I am making improvement. [page break] I wrote to George, to Estella and to Oliver.
15 October 1923 • Monday
I had a fairly good night. Wrote to Pres. Rudger Clawson about my appointment to Canada. I wrote to my Sister Minerva who is in Los Angeles. I also wrote to my daughter Ruby. Alice, Edna, Ray & I walked up on to Spencer’s Butte, a high hill from the top of which we had a splendid view of Eugene. It was cold up there and although I had my overcoat, the cold air and the walk caused me to cough hard for sometime.
Before retiring to bed I had a hot bath and closed the pores by a rinse in cold water. I felt the best after it that I had felt for weeks and lay down without difficulty in breathing, but towards morning I began to have a pain through my body just under the left breast and did some coughing. I put on my heavier, Duofold garments. We had rain and wind during the night.

A cool morning.
My cough is better but a pain in my side gives me grief. It rained during the day. Mother, Ray, Edna and I went to a show in the afternoon. We played Rook in the evening. Mailed letters to Ruby & Sister Nerva. [page break]
17 October 1923 • Wednesday
Eugene, Oregon.
A beautiful day.
I took a hot soak in the bath tub before going to bed last night and had one of the best nights rest for weeks. I still have pains and soreness back and front under the scapula. I cough too, and lift much mucus. I have no temperature. The trouble seems to be in the Bronchial tubes so far as the cough is concerned. I got some new cough syrup two days ago. It seems to do good. Today I bought a dollar bottle of “Alcohol Rub” and at night before going to bed had a hot bath and an alcohol rub. Saw a show with the folks. Wrote home.

I had a hard coughing spell in the night. Had an alcohol Rub before dressing this morning.
Studied religious subjects. Attended a show with Mother, Edna & Ray Played Rook in the evening. Had an alcohol rub when I retired to bed.
19 October 1923 • Friday
Beautiful day.
I had a coughing spell in the night as usual. A cold pack on my throat seemed to help some. Had a good alcohol rub before arising. On the whole I believe I am gaining some, i.e. my cold is not so troublesome as it was.
I wrote to my daughter Nerva and to Pres. Rudger Clawson.
I walked down to the Ry Station [page break] and had the agent wire to Portland for Standard section to Salt Lake. Mother, Edna, Ray & I took a street car ride and to Springfield, a two fare ride. Later I wrote to Pres. E. J. Wood of Cardston. I studied religious subjects &c. In the evening we five all went to the Rex show house and saw “Eleventh Hour.”
20 October 1923 • Saturday
Eugene, Oregon.
Beautiful weather.
I had a good night last until about 6:00 o’clock this morning when my coughing commenced. I think I am getting better. We walked out and called at the Ry Station where we enquired again abt. our berths. Later in the evening, we went to a show. After the show we visited until 11:30.
21 October 1923 • Sunday
I had a better night than usual which gives me encouragement.
Mother, Edna, Ray & I took a walk for about 40 min. in the afternoon. I did some studying of gospel subjects &c.
In the evening Prof. & Bro. Avard Fairbanks took us to his home where we spent an hour or so pleasantly. Bro. Fairbanks showed us through his studio at the University of Oregon. We got no sleep before taking train at 3:35 A.M. for home. Edna has a cold. [page break]
22 October 1923 • Monday
Eugene, Oregon.
Mother, Ray and I took the 3:35 A.M. train for home. Arrived in Portland at 8:00 A.M. and by phone appointment we were met at the Ry Station by a son of Mission President B. S. Young and an Elder Oldroid with an auto & we were shown the town for an hour and left Portland on the 9:35 A.M. train for home. We had a pleasant day in observing the scenery along the Columbia River, visiting, &c.

My cough about as usual
We encountered cold weather & snow coming East and arrived in Salt Lake at 6:30 P.M. We were met at the Ry Station by our son & daughter, George & Nina with their cars. They took us directly to the polls where we cast our ballots before going home.
After supper we were visited by George & Edith, LeGrand & Ina & Rega & Lucena. All usually well at home.
24 October 1923 • Wednesday
Home.
Health slightly improved. I presided at the 8:30 A.M. temple meeting and attended to my other temple duties as usual. Sealed about twenty couples & a number of children to parents. Attended Circle meeting in the [page break] evening. Geo L. & Nerva visited us in the evening after we got home.
25 October 1923 • Thursday
Home.
A cold day.
My cold seems to be about as heretofore. I see but slight improvements.
I took 7:20 A.M. car for my work at the temple.
At the regular council meeting of the Twelve, Pres. Grant told Pres. Clawson and the Twelve that he desired them to see that those members of the Church who are active in the propaganda in favor of the practice of plural marriage be dealt with. Where the Stake Presidencies & High Councils can properly handle these cases, they should be instructed to do so. Others may be handled by the Council of the Twelve.
I attended to my temple duties as usual. Spent about 12½ hours in the temple.
26 October 1923 • Friday
Home.
I had a better night than usual last night and my cough is better. I cut up some gum camphor in a small bottle and filled the bottle about 1/3 fill of alcohol rub. I pour a little on my handkerchief and inhale it and it seems to be helpful.
I took 7:20 A.M. car for the Temple. Had a busy day. [page break] I sealed a number of couples and children to parents and set apart seven new Temple Workers. I spent more than 11 leven hours in the Temple today. Joel & Georgina called at the Temple for Mother & me at 8 P.M. and took us to the Orpheum. After the show we went up to Joel’s & had ice cream & cake and spent nearly an hour so that it was past 12 oclock, mid night when we got home.

I spent the day at the Temple working on Temple ordinances & ceremonies. My son George assisted me for several hours. Spent the evening at home retiring early. Clarence, Mamie & children called on us in the evening.
28 October 1923 • Sunday
Beautiful fall day.
All usually well.
I spent the forenoon at home and in the afternoon with other members of my family went down to our daughter Nervas where we took dinner at 4:30 P.M. and spent the evening until about 8:40. Came home and wrote letters, to Oliver & to Ruby.
29 October 1923 • Monday
I spent the day at the Temple. Jos F. Smith Jr & Stephen [page break] L. Richards spent two hrs with me in the Temple going over the Temple ordinances, considering proposed changes. Adjourned until 2 P.M. tomorrow. I wrote to my daughter Edna. Mother spent the day at Mamie’s caring for the children, Dorothy & Orin. I went down to Mamies to Supper and spent the evening. Nina took us down and brought us home in her car.
30 October 1923 • Tuesday
Good weather still.
I am getting better of my cough. I went to the Temple in the morning as usual where I spent a busy day. Elders Jos. F. Smith Jr & Stephen L. Richards spent an hour with me in going over some suggestions I have to offer of change in the ordinances including a re-writing of them. The evening was spent at home.
31 October 1923 • Wednesday
I had a good night last, my cough having left me. Am feeling much better today. I was at my work in the temple before 8 A.M.
I sealed nine couples of living and some children to parents.
I set apart two temple workers. Wrote to my son Oliver in Hanover, Germany. [page break]
