Windy day.

This is the anniversary of the birth of President Brigham Young. An evening session of endowments will be held in his honor. Each of the 23 brethren gave expression to their thoughts in relation to the matter a consensus of which is that they were surprised, they eulogized Pres. Smart and said that he had earned a rest and if he desired it and the Lord inspired it they thought it would be all right.

I had them give a written expression as to who in their judgment would be a suitable successor to Pres. Smart which tickets clearly showed that Brother Byron O. Colton was the man. 26 June 1922 • Monday

Home.

I had a busy day at the temple. Sealed 26 couples. Alice, Ray, Josephine, Franklin, and Alice & Joel Tate were each baptized for 20 names, 120 in all.

I went before the Presidency to consult them about the reception to be tendered Sister Edna L. Smith, the Matron of the Temple. The matter of a successor came up. I told the brethren that I thought it would be well to defer the appointment of a successor to E. L. Smith as it would not then be associated with Sister Smith’s release. This was approved heartily I said, however, that since I had such a good opportunity I thought I might express my thoughts as to a successor to Sister E. L. Smith. So I told the brethren that I thought it somewhat more proper and preferable to have my own wife as an assistant to me in this temple work than some body else’s wife provided the brethren felt that she is worthy & capable of filling the bill. The brethren in chorus said she is just the woman for the place, none equal to her and said further that they had already considered the matter and decided upon her. Tears came in Pres. Grants eyes as he spoke of it. [page break]

At the 4 P.M. meeting in the Annex There were present of the General Authorities Prests. Grant, Penrose, Clawson & Elders G. A. Smith, J. E. Talmage, R. R. Lymon, J. A Widtsoe, H. G. Smith, D. A. Smith & John Wells. Of these Pres. Grant, G. A. Smith, R. Clawson, R. Lymon, D. A. Smith and I spoke. The wives of these men were invited and most of them were present. I made explanation of the purpose of the meeting, that it was to tender a sort of testimonial for Sister Edna L. Smith. Explained how this came about on her second suggestion, the first having been made a year ago. A unanimous vote sustained the action of the Presidency in honorably releasing her as the president of the sister workers and matron of the temple. I also made the presentation to her of a set of the Standard Church works and a beautiful rocking chair. Refreshments were served after the closing exercises. Sister Smith was made very happy and that was the purpose of our gathering &c. After the meeting, Alice and I were besieged by temple workers clamoring for Alice’s appointment as their president. We later took street car and went down to Sugar House and called on Dr. S L. Richards, my brother, and Aunt Louise S. Richards both of whom are ill. We also called at Mamie’s & at Nina’s and Clarence brought us home at 11:30 P.M. A full day, and a [page break] good day, may the Lord be praised.
