Santa Monica.
All well.
Beautiful day.
A good bath introduced me properly to a day of pleasure. I did some water work on the lawn cutting the grass. Ten of us in auto including Pres. Grant went in to Los Angeles. My family, Wallace Bennett and June Woodruff went to Pasadena and returned via. of Holywood reaching the home about 9 P.M. We had three blow outs or flat tires and were stopped in all about 5 hours. Punk tires.

All Well.
Misty morning
I was first to arise. Had my morning bath as usual and [page break] did some work on the lawn. Alice and I went to the City on 12:10 P.M. Car. Attended to some business at the steam ship Co. office. Bought Mother a coat and myself some cuff links $3.50 and a lock for my pin. We took dinner at one of the Booth Cafeteria, and then went to Venice, to Ocean Park and to Santa Monica Resorts. Returning we boarded the wrong car and on it rode to Socotel where we got a West Gate car and returned to 21st St., thence to our home, arriving at 9 P.M.
Nina, Orin & Dorothy went with his Mother’s Uncle, Mr. Druce and his wife in their car to Holywood and elsewhere spending the whole day with them. I wrote a letter to my son Ray at Inkom, Idaho.

All well.
Beautiful day.
I worked on the lawn before breakfast and then bathed and changed my under clothing.
All the folks, except Pres. Grant and me, went in auto for a ride. Bp. Nibley called for Pres. Grant about 11 A.M. and they went to the golf links to play. I remained at home alone and read and studied and wrote &c.
The Des. News received to=day announces the accidental death by drowning of Blanchard P. Ashton & his Sister Georgia at [page break] Black Foot, Idaho. Blanchard is Genetta Smith’s husband. She was visiting in Salt Lake at the time.
Alf McCune & wife and daughter-in-law called for a few minutes. Pres. J. W. McMurrin also called in the evening.

All well.
We left the Santa Monica home at noon, went up town and attended to some business, made some purchases and took 3: P.M. train for San Pedro Harbor where we took “Yale”, boat leaving at 4 P.M. for San Francisco. Our party consisted of Orin, Nina, Dorothy, Mother and myself. We were all able to eat supper and slept fairly well.
5 August 1922 • Saturday
On “Yale” boat between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Orin and I ate breakfast. The others went to the table but returned without eating. We arrived in San Francisco docks at 11:00 A.M. and were met by Edward Mahr Jr. of 108 Divizadero St. and Elder J. E. Riddle, Pres of the Conference and in the former’s car we were driven about Town and out to the Cliff House where we saw the seals &c. We took dinner with Sister Story and family, Bro. Jas. O. Story being at work. We took supper at Bro. Hahrs and stayed at night [page break] at Clark Hotel.

San Francisco.
We were driven to the docks by Bro. Mahr and accompanied by Bros. Riddle & Story. Nina Orin & Dorothy remained behind & Mother & I left at 9:15 A.M. via W.P. Ry for home. All the afternoon while traveling up the Sacramento valley it was extremely warm.

On train from Cal.
Mother & I reached Salt Lake City at 6:20 (Mt. Time) No unusual incidents to mention while we were in route. My Son George had been at the depot since 3:30 waiting for us & then missed us. He took supper with us.
8 August 1922 • Tuesday
Home.
I spent the forenoon at the temple; and the afternoon and evening with the temple workers at Saltair. George and Lucena and their families and Joel lunched together. This was the annual outing of the Temple workers.

Weather tolerable
I solemnized a time marriage at the temple in forenoon. [page break] The painting and cleaning work is progressing nicely. I wrote up my journal for several days; Attended to correspondence &c.
10 August 1922 • Thursday
I attended regular weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. Ate lunch as usual between 1: & 2: P.M. in temple. Endowment ceremonies were considered. In the evening our folks returned from Bear Lake where they had been for an outing for a week, viz. Clarence & Mamie & their children, Charles & Edna, Estella and Jack & Ruby.
11 August 1922 • Friday
I took 7 A.M. car for my work at the temple. I arranged with the recorder to have receipts forms prepared and in the future issue receipts for cash received as donations and for all monies received for any & all purposes. I instructed two of our sisters who came into the temple with their hats on that they should not have their hats on in the temple, &c.
12 August 1922 • Saturday
Elder D. O. McKay and I worked on temple ordinances from 7:45 A.M. to 5 P.M. I then went to Saltair where 18 members of the family lunched together bathed &c. The occasion was the [page break] birth day anniversary of John Hansen and of Nina.
13 August 1922 • Sunday
I took 8 A.M. train for Ogden where I attended the Ogden Stake Conference. I spoke at each session occupying 40 min at each. Subjects treated. Fundamentals in Mormonism and Necessity of our living was to the Lord and serving Him and our fellows, &c.
I returned to Salt Lake and addressed the Saints of the 1st ward on the Subject of Temple work.
14 August 1922 • Monday
I bought a Palm Beach Suit for $10.00 at Mullets. It was $13.50. I was at the temple early and attended to much important business. At 10 A.M. I met with the Temple workers and gave them instructions. Bros. Davis & Christensen spoke briefly.
I did some sealing, a couple and children to parents.
15 August 1922 • Tuesday
I had berth reservations made on Salt Lake Route to Colton and S.P. from Colton to Bowie to leave Salt Lake at 8:55 this morning on my way to Thatcher, Ariz. to attend St. Joseph Conference, but on account of the strike of train[page break]men at Las Vegas no trains were running on the Salt Lake Route, consequently I went to Ogden and through the kind offices of Mr. D. S. Spencer of S. Gate. I obtained permit to ride on Over Land Limited due to leave Ogden at 1:20 P.M., No. 1, the Overland Limited was about four hours late leaving Ogden. This was to my advantage as we saw the Lucin Cut off and then slept going through the desert and awoke and got up next morning in time to see Sparks, Reno, Trucky and the Donner Lake and environs which are most beautiful. I think the S.P. the most scenic route between Salt Lake and the Coast.

Arrived in Sacramento, Cal. at 3:30 P.M. P. Time and got No. 60 out for Los Angeles at 4:10. Arrived in Los Angeles on time next morning 8:00 oclock.

Los Angeles, Cal.
Arrived at 8 A.M. on So. Pacific at 8 A.M. I wrote letters &c studied until train time, and took No. 4 S.P. out of Los Angeles for Bowie at 11:15 A.M. I had an upper. The afternoon and the night were exceedingly warm.
18 August 1922 • Friday
I arrived in Bowie on time 7:08 A.M. Mt. Time. I telegraphed [page break] President Andrew Kimball at Thatcher that I had arrived &c.
I wrote up my journal from memory for the past three days.
On the way between Ogden &Sacramento I had an interesting gospel, or several of them, conversations with a Mr. & Mrs. Albert Wagoner of 4328 N. Sawyer St. Ave, Chicago. I gave them my lower berth and took their upper in even exchange While at Bowie I wrote Pres. Winslow F. Smith requesting him to call on Mr and Mrs Wagoner when they get home.
I wrote to my wife and to Pres. J. W. McMurrin of Los Angeles requesting him to make berth reservation for me on 20 or 22 for Tues evening out of Los Angeles.
I was met at Thatcher by Pres. Nash who took me in his car to Ashurst about 15 miles from Thatcher. We met Dewy Bryce who volunteered to go with us and show us the boundaries of my 120 acres of land &c. His services were accepted. We called on the Secretary of the Consolidated Canal Co. in which I own 18 shares, supposed to be sufficient to irrigate 5 acres to the share or 90 A. Mrs. Bertie Bryce, the Sec., gave me information in regard to the Company’s affairs. We next called on two of the Gardner Bros. and asked for and obtained the contract of sale which they held for my land and water as they had let the [page break] contract lapse by default. They were to have paid the taxes for 1921 including all water assessments and to plant at least 40 acres to crop to harvest this season. None of the conditions have been complied with. I stayed at the home of Pres. Nash while in Thatcher (John F. Nash)
Pres. Andrew Kimball is in Los Angeles with his afflicted wife who has heart trouble and is seriously ill.
19 August 1922 • Saturday
Thatcher, Ariz.
I attended and spoke in both the 10 A.M. and the 2 P.M. conference meeting following the topics treated by the other brethren. “This is a Choice Valley,” Genealogy and Temple work in forenoon and in the afternoon, missionary work at home and abroad. This was a missionary meeting. I assisted in administering to Sister Moody which is sorely afflicted with cancer of the face. By invitation of Bro. Harry L. Payne of the Stake Presidency. Bro & Sis. Nash and I drove over to Safford about 5 miles and took supper with him & family. During the day I met a number of old acquaintances and talked with several people about my land and water interests, among whom are Alex. Gayton and a Bro. Marian D. Maloy who owns land adjoining mine in Ashurst, also Payne and Greenhalgh, real estate men who have an appointment with me for Monday morning at 9 A.M. in Safford. [page break]

Thatcher, Ariz.
Am well.
The weather in Thatcher has been warm but is tolerable.
I got up at 5:30 before it was thoroughly light. After a sponge off, shave &c. I wrote up my journal for yesterday and otherwise made preparation for conference. Attended a 9 A.M. priesthood meeting and occupied 40 min time on the subject of an efficient ministry. How obtained. At the 10 A.M. meeting I occupied about 45 min. Subject—The Godhead. Our responsibility to teach the Atheist, the Infidel and the Agnostic. Our belief must be right and our actions also to attain salvation. At afternoon meeting I occupied about 45 min. Subject, Two Powers & Thy will be done.”
Between meetings I set apart a number of officers including the ordaining of two Bishops & seting apart of a number of counselors.
I ordained Orson P. Scousen a Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Thatcher West Ward. I ordained Eugene Romney a Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Franklin ward. I set apart the counselors to these bishops and 6 or 7 other Bps counselors. I also set apart Edward A. Lunt of a President of Seventy and a member of the Council of the 89th quorum.
I administered to George [page break] Hatch. Injured eye and Common [blank] Tuberculosis.
My talks averaged for the two days five sermons of 45 min. each.
In the evening Pres. Payne and wife came down from Safford and took supper at Bro. Nash’es and spent the evening.
21 August 1922 • Monday
Thatcher.
Am well.
I arose at 5:30 A.M. and had a good sponge bath, shaved &c. Pres. Nash took me to Safford in his car where I met Payne & Greenhalgh and arranged for them to handle my Arizona property as Real Estate agents.
Took 11:30 train to Bowie 40 miles, thence on S.P. for home. During the afternoon it rained hard and continued clowdy which made crossing the desert tolerably though it got very warm in the night. I awoke at Yuma and saw the Colorado as we crossed in it.
22 August 1922 • Tuesday
Arrived in Los Angeles at 8 A.M. Went over to U.P. Station on foot and there checked my grips, took up my berth ticket and took U.P. train to Long Beach where I spent about three hours & returned same way. When I went aboard the 4 P.M. train I found Pres. C. W. Penrose & wife just starting home. Met Pres. J. W. McMurrin. It was warm riding in the afternoon but quite tolerable at night. [page break]

On train between L.A. & S.L.C. Near Calente we were detained for two or three hours with a washout and a freight train ahead. Some rain caused swollen stream also; cooler weather. On train I had an extended Gospel conversation with Miss Marjorie Dickman of St. Louis. Arrived in Salt Lake at 12:40 A.M. 5 hours late. Took Taxy home.

All well.
I attended to my duties at the temple and attended regular weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. except while attending to sealings &c.
Mother and I took 6 P.M. train to Saltair where the Taylor Richards Motor Co. of which I am President, entertained their employees and their wives and we took supper at the café with them.
25 August 1922 • Friday

I attended to my regular duties at the Temple and I attended and presided at a meeting in the World Room of the temple at 5 P.M. for Temple Workers at which Pres. Grant was present and he and I spoke.
My wife Alice A. R. Richards was sustained to preside over the Sister Workers of the Salt Lake Temple and she was set apart by President Heber J. Grant [page break] assisted by myself and Brother Albert Davis, Bro Jos Fielding Smith was out of town, hence his absence. Mother made a short talk expressing her appreciation of the appointment and the hope that she may successfully and satisfactorily fill the same. President Grant and I were the speakers. At the close of the meeting the Sisters congratulated Mother and expressed their satisfaction with the appointment. I spent the evening at home returning early.

I spent a part of the day at the temple where I showed Alice about the temple &c.
Attended to some business down town. Called on the manager of U.I.V. Co. and discussed with him the affairs of the company.
Mother and I took 6 P.M. train to Saltair and had both in the lake.
27 August 1922 • Sunday
I attended and spoke at the meetings of the Granite Stake Conference. In forenoon I treated the Subject of Service to God, to man & to self. In the afternoon I spoke upon the subject, “Why go to Temple for marriage?[”] [page break] Alice went with me and we took dinner at the Stake House and supper at Mamie’s. We called on Aunt Lou and Aunt Lacey Richards. Clarence & Mamie brought us home. We also saw Orin & family, LeGrand & family.
28 August 1922 • Monday
I spent most of the day at the temple and came home early and worked on the lawn. In the evening worked on my books.
29 August 1922 • Tuesday
Attended to my duties as usual at the Temple. Presided at Temple meeting sealed about 36 couples. Set apart several Temple Workers. Went over Rules & Decisions with Bro. Duncan M. McCallister and have some important suggestions to present to the Presidency. Made appointment with them for tomorrow 9:30 A.M. setting.
I spent the evening at home Hugh & Sarah called and spent an hour with Mother & me.
30 August 1922 • Wednesday
I took 7 A.M. car for my work. Attended 8:30 meeting as usual and sealed 25 living couple, one for the dead and 32 children to parents. Went over the Endowment Ceremonies with the Presidency and J. F. S. Final reading [page break]2 Attended my circle meeting at 6:30 P.M.
Hugh & Sarah spent about an hour with us in the evening.

All well.
Stormy.
Alice and I went to the temple in the morning and remained there until late hour. Evening session on. I attended to the regular sealing of the living as usual Attended the regular weekly Council of the Twelve and Presidency where the Temple ordinances and rulings were considered as a final consideration and the books were put into the hands of Bro. D. M. McCallister to be written up for all the temples. This is a great relief to me. I have been engaged on this work for months.
