1 April 1926 • Thursday

I went to the Temple as usual. Bro Geo. H. Brimhall was Speaker at the 8:30 A.M. meeting. An excellent talk, he gave. Attended regular council meeting from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. with a recess long enough to eat lunch. Important matters were discussed. In the evening Mother & I went to a show, The Pantages.

2 April 1926 • Friday

I attended temple meeting and at 9:30 went into meeting of the [page break] Twelve, Seventies and Mission Presidents which continued until 6:30 P.M. except for an hour recess.

By permission I occupied 10 minutes in presenting to the meeting the instructions of the First Presidency given to Mission Presidents some years ago to send to St George Temple names of faithful men & women who had died not having relations in the Church and have their temple work done and at the expense of the Church. Also, to have all temple work from the missions pass through the mission office so the Mission President can approve same, admonishing them to guard against Negro blood.1

I also advised Mission Presidents to obtain record books & have them placed in the hands of families throughout the mission encouraging them to keep a record of their families & kindred and to have the work done for their dead. A number of questions were asked me which I answered for them.

Mother & I visited My son Geo’s family in the evening, primarily to see Little Robert and take some ice cream to him. He has a lingering illness from diseased tonsils.

3 April 1926 • Saturday

Stormy day.

I went to the Temple where I worked at my desk answering correspondence and working on the Temple ordinances, having gone over them all again and listed some changes to be made a part of our report of a committee of six of the Apostles to the First Presidency.

The Committee and I met and these suggestions will be considered. [page break]

Mother & I called on Aunt Zina Y. Card it being her 77th birth day.

In the evening we went to the Liverpool Conference Reunion in 2nd Ward House.

4 April 1926 • Sunday

I attended the conference meetings in the forenoon and afternoon and between meetings Attended funeral services for the son of Leroy S. Dicksen & spoke at the Larkin’s undertaking parlor.

Mother & I went to Sugar House and saw Nina & the baby who is ill with whooping cough. In the evening I listened to the S.S.U. program over the radio.

5 April 1926, Monday

I attended the two conference sessions and general Priesthood meeting, the latter in the evening.

6 April 1926 • Tuesday

I attended both Conference meetings and spoke at the latter occupying 17 minutes with good liberty.

7 April 1926 • Wednesday

Attended Special Priesthood meeting and by permission of Pres Grant mad[e] a few remarks pertaining to temple recommends & temple work. I mentioned the donations, ring at altar, qualifications &c, &c.

Attended to my duties at the temple and had a busy day. Pres. E J Wood of Alberta Temple called at the Temple. He showed me [page break] a check of 3000, given him by James Eldridge for temple purposes to pay those who are doing charity names.

8 April 1926 • Thursday

Beautiful day.

I attended to my duties in the Temple. Attended Weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. I wrote to Oliver.

In the evening Alice & I went down to the Home of Pres. Bp. S. Q. Cannon and with the other General Authorities & their wives spent the evening & had supper. On the way down at intersection of Motor Ave. and 2nd East st. I collided with a car driven by C. Sonneborn of 376 W. So. Temple St. No one hurt some damage to both cars which I suppose I shall have to stand.

I wrote to Oliver.

9 April 1926 • Friday

Fine day.

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual, and attended to some business outside. Wrote to Sarah who is in Switzerland. I also wrote to Ruby. In the evening Alice and I attended the American Theater.

10 April 1926 • Saturday

I spent some time assisting Mother in the purchase of a rug & other things. Had Gulbransen the Contractor up to look at my house, to see what is needed by way of repairs &c.

Went to the temple after dinner where I was occupied at my desk. Received a letter from Pres Hugh J Cannon of Basil announcing the release of my son Oliver to return home. Pres Cannon said Oliver had accomplished in 29 months more than many [page break] missionaries had accomplished in three years. Mother and I visited our sick folks Ninas baby & Nerva’s baby in the evening. I had some dental work done in the early evening.

11 April 1926 • Sunday

Home.

I spent the forenoon in the temple with Elders McKay, J. F. Smith, S. L. Richards and J. A. Widtsoe of the 12 as committee on temple Ordinances.

In the afternoon Mother and I accompanied Clarence to Bighorn where we met Jack & Ruby and Clarence’s family who had been spending a week with Jack & Ruby in Cornish. We brought them home and Jack & Ruby returned to Cornish After Supper, Mother & I went down to Sugar House and saw the Sick baby and called and Nervas & Mamie’s.

12 April 1926 • Monday

I went to the Temple in the morning & married a couple.

Worked at my desk &c.

Towards evening I took Mother & Aunt Nerva up to Centerville where we called on Sister Ford & Bro Randall two of our Temple workers and I blessed both of them. Bro Ford assisted in the case of Sister Ford. Later we went to the American.

13 April 1926 • Tuesday

I met with Temple ordinance committee from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Attended to my temple duties after that time. Took Mother down to Nina’s in Sugar House and Orin and I administered to Nina and Q. Wallace. [page break]

I presided at a missionary meeting and assisted in setting the missionaries apart. Later I went to Sugar House and got Mother. Nina feeling much better. Charles & Edna called in evening.

14 April 1926 • Wednesday

I attended to my duties as usual at the temple. Had eighteen marriages and some sealings of children. By request, I went down to Sugar House and administered to Sister Sarah, Mary Clark. Her son assisted. I wrote Pres. Bennion of the Central States Mission about printing a Book for use in keeping family record and record of temple work. Mailed him a copy of a record book sold by the Des. Bk. Co. and suggested certain changes. Attended Circle meeting in the evening. I took my daughter Nina to the Tabernacle Concert, Paduweiski.

15 April 1926 • Thursday

Weather beautiful.

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. Attended the regular weekly council meeting of the First Presidency & the Twelve in the temple. My daughter Lucena had a number of the family at her home and I spent an hour or two with them.

16 April 1926 • Friday

I attended to my duties as usual at the Temple

I went to Forest Dale Ward before 21st So. and administered to Sister Sarah, May Clark and to [page break] Wm A Morton. Mother & I went to the Pantages in the evening and later I took train for Shelley, Idaho.

17 April 1926 • Saturday

Shelley.

I stayed at the home of the Stake Clerk, Fred C. Mickelson while in Shelly from Sat A.M. to Sun. 7:30 except while attending meetings. I attended and spoke at the two public conference meeting and spent two hours in meetings with the Stake Presidency.

18 April 1926 • Sunday

Shelley, Idaho.

Am well.

Attended and spoke at the two Conference meetings, the Conjoint M.I.A. meeting at 6:00 P.M. and a funeral service of a 15 yr old boy and a 5 yr old girl who were accidentally killed while harrowing in the field near Shelley. I got the 7:21 P.M. train for home.

19 April 1926 • Monday

I arrived from Shelley, Idaho at about 7:30 A.M. Went to the Temple and was busy there in the forenoon. I took my car and George & Edith & Robert, Aunt Nerva and Georgina and drove to Ogden where we attended the funeral services of Jos. A. West in Ogden 5th ward. I offered the benediction. We went to the Cemetery and visited with some of the family members there. [page break]

20 April 1926 • Tuesday

Am well

I met D. O. McKay, Jos. F. Smith, S. L. Richards and J. A. Widtsoe of the Twelve at the Temple as a committee at 8:00 A.M. where we spent about 1½ hrs in consideration of the Temple ordinances with the purpose of suggesting certain changes in the reading of the Ritual of End. & the ceremonies of the Temple. I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual. At 4:00 P.M. I met at the Church Offices Building, 4th floor a number of the descendants of the Howe family where a family sir name organization of the Howe family was effected. I was made President. Chas. Crane Howe vice president, Maud C. Melville, Secretary & Treasurer, Alton C Melville, assistant, Susa Young Gates, Genealogist Bro. Edward Howe Chairman of Temple work Committee.

In the evening Mother & I went to the Show, at the American.

21 April 1926 • Wednesday

I went to the temple as usual and was the speaker at the Temple meeting. Had a busy forenoon and took 12:45 P.M. train for Canada.

22 April 1926 • Thursday

Without special incident I made the journey arriving in Butte at 5:30 this morning. I got 7:15 A.M. Gt. Northern train for Shelby arriving there at 4:50 P.M. On the train at Butte I met Pres. Mark Austin who was on his way to Canada on business for the Sugar Company We spent most of the day in conversation. At Gt Falls Bro. Austin phoned to the Sugar people at Raymond to meet us with Auto at Shelby at 4:50. At a later hour Bro. Frank Taylor & wife came with an Essex car and took us about 40 miles to Sweetgrass where we stayed all night at a hotel. Had one puncture.

23 April 1926 • Friday

Sweetgrass, Mont.

I arose before 6:00 A.M. This being the 43rd birth day of our son George I wrote him and his mother. Asked her to buy a set for the hall as a present in commemoration of her work of 43 yrs ago to day and all the days since.

We left Sweetgrass about 8:20 A.M. & arrived in Lethbridge about 11:20 A.M. a distance of 81 miles. I went to the home of Pres. Hugh B. Brown and Bro. Austin and Bro Taylor & wife went on to Tabor. I invited Bro. Austin to assist me with the work of the conference. Our first appointment is with the presidency at 7:00 o’clock this evening. I am writing this at 12:10 P.M. with my book on my knee. Am well.

Spent an hour or so with Pres. Brown talking over stake affairs.

A meeting was held with the Stake Presidency at 7:00 P.M. and at this meeting I set apart the Bishopric of the Tabor ward, Albert L. Wood, W. E. Bullock and Wilford Harris.

24 April 1926 • Saturday

I attended the Lethbridge Stake Conference meetings at 10:00 A.M. & 2:00 P.M. At the forenoon meeting I occupied about 30 min. Subject. The spiritual darkness in the world. The Gospel has been restored but the people of the world do not recognize it, same as in former times. Referred to Thos. R. [page break] Marshall U.S. vice Pres. & Read statements of other prominent men as to the apostate conditions of the world & need of just what we have, the Restored Gospel.

At the afternoon meetings I occupied 45 minutes showed the mystery in the religions as shown in the Ch. of Eng. Art. of religion and read commentary comments on Heb. 6:1, 2. and commented. Had good liberty. After meeting a Bro Thos. Wood took Bro. Austin & me from Lethbridge to Cardston 65 miles. I stayed at Pres. Wood’s.

25 April 1926 • Sunday

Cardston Canada.

Am well

Weather ideal.

I attended and spoke at the two conference meetings, the Conjoint M.I.A. meeting and a meeting of the High Priests from 12:15 to 1:15. At the morning meeting I spoke of the purpose of holding Priesthood Convention The interest sisters should have in the Priesthood, Why? The ministry of the Church & Lesser Priesthood. At the afternoon session I spoke upon the subject of Genealogy & Temple work. At the Conjoint mutual meeting I spoke upon the Subject of Marriage, the Eternity of the marriage Covenant. At the H Priests meeting I spoke of them as graduates who should be able to fill any position for which they have the authority in the P. They might be used as a quorum & aid temple work, to convert the non tithe payer, the Smoker, the wayward &c. I feel that the Lord blessed me both in Alberta & Lethbridge Stakes, praise be to his holy name forever for these and all blessings to me and mine and to all the subjects of my prayers, who are many people & many interests.

Cardston, Canada.

Am well.

Yesterday I blessed a baby Bryan Thomas Smith, a grand son of Pres. Wood, this was at his home. I set apart two Alternate members of the High Council and the Bishopric of Glenwood Ward, also done yesterday. I wrote to Mother.

Pres. Wood & wife, Pres Mark Austin & I left for Waterton Lakes at 10:30 A.M. and returned to Cardston at 6:00 P.M. We called at Frank Smith’s, Pres Woods Son-in-Law’s and had an excellent dinner at Spring Hill. Called by Glenwood and saw my 10 acre farm.

27 April 1926 • Tuesday

Cardston, Canada.

Am well.

Pleasant weather.

Merliss Steed came over from Mountain View about 16 miles with Star auto and got me and took me to his home and from there Merlin & Alice & I went 12 miles further up near the Waterton lakes to the home of Geo. Allison where a turkey dinner was prepared. Merlin & Alice took along a freezer of icecream and we had a grand dinner. Returned to Mt. View where we spent a pleasant hour before retiring.

28 April 1926 • Wednesday

Beautiful day.

I am well.

We left Mt View for Cardston about 8:00 A.M. and went to the temple at Cardston. I attended both sessions of Endowments, following behind the companies. I spoke at both meetings, offered some suggestions to workers to improve the work & make it more attractive We returned from the evening session after the Sealings at 11:10 P.M. Pres Wood [page break] and I went to the home of Sister Leavitt and administered to her and we administered to eight or ten people at the temple. A busy but interesting & I trust profitable day.

29 April 1926 • Thursday

Beautiful weather

My health is good.

I attended both sessions of the Endowment at the temple, ie, I followed through and made some suggestions for improvements in the way of saying & doing. I also spoke at both Temple meetings. These two days at the Temple have been very enjoyable to me and I trust profitable to the work and workers. I received many kind words from the workers. Took dinner at Walter Caldwell’s home to day.

30 April 1926 • Friday

Cardston, Canada.

Am well

Windy day

The weather has been quiet, warm and pleasant since I came to Canada a week ago to-day until this morning when the wind commenced to blow hard. The dust & dirt drifts like snow in the winter time.

I left Cardston for Raymond on 8:10 train and was met at the station by Pres. H S Allen and taken to his home where I made up my headquarters while in Raymond.
