I asked if all the ceremonies designated as unwritten ceremonies could not be written, revised and approved and go into the President’s Book held only by the Temple Presidents. The Presidency were all present and thought favorably of by them. The matter is to be submitted to the Council of the First Presidency, the Twelve & Patriarch. This would give us a standard to go by that these ceremonies might be kept uniform.

The subject of the garment was again brought up and considered and certain changes thought favorably of. The permissibility of dispensing with the collar, using buttons instead of string, using the closed crotch and flap, and for the women wearing elbow sleaves and leg length legs ie just below the knee.

I wrote a three paged letter to my nephew George F. Knowlton advising him in regard to his future course and how to solve a problem of love affair &c. as this question was submitted to me yesterday by him and his mother while I was at their house in Logan. I think this letter was inspired. I did not have to change a single word.

26 April 1923 • Thursday

Arrived in Butte in the early morning and got train for Gt. Falls at 8 A.M. Arrived in Gt. Falls at 3:15 P.M. and I put up at the Park Hotel.

I went to a show in the evening at the Palace and in the afternoon in the Liberty. I studied all the way from Butte to Billings and felt that [page break] I needed a little diversion. I slept well last night and have had two meals today at this writing 9:30 P.M. I am feeling exceedingly well. I wrote a one paged letter to my son George, enclosing some news paper clippings.

27 April 1923 • Friday

On train at Sweetgrass 1:10 P.M. My attention has been given to-day to the subject of oil production along the line of this Ry. It is 69 miles from Gt. Falls to Conrad; 16 miles from Conrad to Fowler; 3 miles from Fowler to the Fowler well. It is about 6 miles from Fowler to our 960 A tract and 8 or 10 miles from there to Shelby. Shelby is 16 miles North of Fowler. Shelby is 20 miles South of Kevin and 30 miles south of Sunburst. Shelby is the junction of the through line going east & west and the train going North & South and shows greater activities in the building line than any other town between Gt. Falls and the border. Our 960 track lies between Shelby and the Fowler well which is 3 miles north of Fowler. The Fowler well is 13 miles south of Shelby. Sunburst seems to be in the midst of the oil field on the North. Kivin 10 miles south is also in the midst. There are about 52 producing wells between and many being sunk or drilled. The Fowler well derrick is but a one horse affair. It is within a stones throw of the Ry. on east side and was in operation as we passed. At Shelby I met and conversed with [page break] a Mr. J. E. Lorernan whose address is Sullivan Hotel, Shelby or Park Hotel Gt Falls. He is a geologist and is engaged in locating wells. I asked about the Fowler well. He said it is on the oil formations but being so far from producing wells the owners are taking a big chance. He thought the well to be about 1800 feet deep. If they get a good flow of oil all the district between there and Sunburst will be a blaze with interest. I asked if the prospects for getting oil would not be as good any where in the bottom of the river or gulch. He said no, that the Fowler well is in the formation or fault, or what ever it is which can be traced with a degree of certainly on the surface.

From Kevin to Sunburst is the well section already developed.

I wrote a two page letter to my son George as I came along and mailed it on the train I went on to Sweetgrass. At this stage of the game I feel somewhat encouraged but the risk is great. If oil is found in the Fowler well in quantity that well justify, there is little question about our land deal being profitable. When the train for Cardston reached Raymond I found Pres. Allen there to meet me and then learned that the Taylor Stake Conference comes first, the Alberta Wed. & Thurs. and Lethbridge the following Sat. & Sun. I spent the evening with the Stake Presidency Bros. Allen & Snow. Bro. Brandly of Sterling confined to his home of an illness. [page break]

28 April 1923 • Saturday

Raymond, Canada.

Am well.

Pleasant weather.

Conference opened at 10 A.M. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 40 minutes. Subject, Pre-existance of man a Biblical doctrine and a fundamental in Mormonism. What it does in understanding of other principles; Origins of the gospel & its oneness, its what man may attain, the Fatherhood of God & brotherhood of man, a refutation of the Darwin theory of evolution and of the Reincarnation of the soul &c.

At the afternoon session I spoke 45 minutes upon the subject of genealogy & temple work and the preparations necessary to be made to qualify the members to worthily go to the temple; also the necessary information to enable them to do work for their dead.

At 4:15 I met with the Presidency and High Council and catechized them as to their manner of living and the character of the work they are doing. I found that those present of H. C. are faithful to duty and exemplary in their lives. I stayed at Pres. Allen’s home and while the folks went to the Oratorio I remained at home reading the Era & the Digest. Have taken some cold. The temperature is just a little too cool to sit in the house without a fire.

29 April 1923 • Sunday

Raymond, Canada.
