1 June 1923 • Friday
I had a busy day at the temple. Came in before 8 A.M. and left after 8 P.M.
At 11:30 P.M. Bp. Clarence Neslen phoned me that President Lemuel H. Redd of Blanding had died at 7 P.M. this date. It would be necessary to leave at 8:10 A.M. tomorrow morning in order to reach Blanding for the funeral services on Sunday. I tried to find some one of the general authorities who could go but most of them were out of town filling their appointments and others did not seem to be at liberty to go. I offered to go myself if some one could be [page break] appointed to fill my appointment with Bro. Ballard in organizing the wards on west side of Jordan into a new stake.
2 June 1923 • Saturday
I went to the Temple where I spent part of the day. Wrote a letter to Bp. Wayne H. Redd of Blanding concerning his brother’s demise, Lemuel H. Redd. With Elder Melvin J. Ballard, we having been appointed by the Presidency, I attended a meeting of those holding the Melchizedek Priesthood residing in the three wards, Garfield, Magna and Pleasant Green of the Pioneer Stake and the two wards, Hunter and Granger of the Cottonwood stake, this meeting having been previously called on my suggestions. The attendance at this meeting was 239. I presented the question of organizing a new stake of the wards named. The question carried unanimously in the affirmative. By unanimous vote also we named the stake Oquirrh after the Oquirrh range of mountains at the base of which these wards are situated. We then took a written expression of those present as to officers to preside over them. After the meeting was dismissed we canvassed the written expressions which showed clearly that Geo. A Little and [page break] John Henry Bacoden stood out in bold relief as leaders. We decided to name the former for the President and the latter for First Counselor. The numbers of the Cottonwood & Pioneer Stakes Presidencies were present and rendered valuable assistance. The Spirit of this meeting was very choice.

At the close of the morning meeting a Stake Priesthood meeting was held and the officers selected were sustained. At the 2 P.M. meeting 702 were present. 30 June 1923 • Saturday
I took D & RG 8:10 A.M. train to Price where I attended the Carbon Stake Conference. The morning session had been held which was an unusual procedure. I occupied about 45 minutes referring to President Warren G Hardings visit to Salt Lake [page break] and how that Pres. Heber J. Grant had played Goff with him and on invitation had accompanied him and his party to Zion’s Canyon, to Idaho and the Yellowstone. Referred to change of sentiment. Quoted Pres. Hardings speech of Ceder how that a greater reverence was the result of his visit to the Grand Zions Canyon, reverence for the Creator. I spoke of Nature’s evidence of God. The works of Jesus Christ prove him to be what he professed. The works of Jos. Smith prove him to be what he claimed for himself. We by these and other evidences know him to have been a divinely called prophet of God.
In the evening I attended an entertainment by the Minstrels and by request spoke briefly on the M.I.A. slogan, “We stand for Divine Guidance through individual and family prayer. The weather is very warm & my palm beech suit got badly wrinkled coming up on the train so I sent it to the laundry by special arrangement and had it laundered and returned to me at a cost of $1.00.
