Weather has been warm for some time about 95° to 102° I am some better of my lameness [page break] I spent most of the day at home. Did some shopping

I played a game of golf in the early morning with George & LeGrand, but it was too much for my lameness and I suffered for it.
I was one of the Speakers at the funeral services held for Thos C. Callister held in Liberty ward. I went to the Temple and spent some time at my desk. I borrowed from Sister Elizabeth Tate an electric vibrator to use for my lameness. I am getting better.
The Temple closed June 30th and will open Aug. 13th.
There are no conferences from July 29th to Aug. 18th During this period the brethren are at liberty to use their time as they see fit. I have spent mine at home nursing a bad case of Sciatica, except that I have been to Ogden to see Edna and to Cornish to see Ruby Have been able to drive my car about Town but at time it was painful so to do. I now walk about with but little limping.
I administered to Sister Elizabeth Tate at her request.

Mother and I went down to Sugar House to see Mamie’s [page break] daughter Marjorie who had her tonsils removed a few days ago but who last night bled freely & fainted from loss of blood. Clarence & I consecrated a bottle of oil & administered to her. The Dr came and did some thing to her throat She became better at once. I spent some time at my desk, read from Wilford Woodruff’s Biography. Toward evening Mother & I went for a ride called at the [illegible] on 7th East & got my Trousers white out.
I am better of my lameness. Mother still has some skin eruption on her wrist. Ray has a lame leg but he is getting better. The weather is cooler to-day.
This is a beautiful world we are living in and a beautiful city, a beautiful home and we are happy. Praise the Lord—
4 August 1928 • Saturday
I Attended to some work at the Temple. Called to See the Presidency. Had a talk with Pres. Nibley on rules governing in cases of suicide &c. I played a game of golf with my son George & his wife towards evening.
This is the Second full game I have played for months and while my leg got tired & lame, a night rest seemed to restore me and I felt better this morning, Same. I am making improvement in overcoming my lameness. [page break]
5 August 1928 • Sunday
I went to the 10th ward fast meeting and blessed Alice Tate Gensch’ baby, my first great grand child and named her Ladonna. I made opening remarks in the meeting and assisted in blessing several children and in confirming several baptized children. We had to dinner at about 2: P.M. where we broke fast, the following: Jack & Ruby, Oliver & Maria & baby, Ray & Alberta Gallagher, Edna & Mother & I.

I played a game of golf with Geo. & LeGrand, took Mother down to Mamies in Sugar House and got Sarah & family and took them to the Salt Air depot. Spent some time at Service garage having my car’s transmission repaired, at a cost of $2.35. Spent some time at the Temple. Attended to Sundry items of Church business.

I spent some time with my wife & Sons at our place of business, “Richards Motor Car. [illegible].” 55 West, 4th So. St. where we have four DeSoto Cars being serviced, the first to come in. there are to be shown to Dealers tomorrow. We have secured the agency for the DeSoto in Salt Lake and the distributership in nearby towns. My lameness is disappearing gradually. [page break]

I attended a meeting in New House Hotel at 10 A.M. of the DeSoto dealers and the Company’s representatives where the DeSoto car was explained by use of Opticon slides &c. We were given free luncheon and then repaired to the house for inspection of the DeSoto cars which are making a hit. Mother, Sarah & family & I went in Car up Parleys Canyon above the Reservoir, looking for choke cherries but found none.

Lucena’s Birthday.
Mother & I took Jack & Ruby up to Pine Crest Inn in Emigration Canyon & returning had Supper at Hotel Utah Caffateria—
Attended a meeting of the RM Co directors in the evening from 8 to 11 1/3. Jack & Ruby & Mother & I took dinner with Hugh & Sarah. I took Hugh down to dinner and on the way back I took Hugh in to see the DeSoto Cars. We count ourselves fortunate in being able to land the Contract for the Sale of the DeSoto in Salt Lake & adjoining towns-

This is Nerva’s birth day anniversary. I played golf with Geo., LeGrand & Jack. Met Pres Grant on the course.
Went to the Temple where I spent part of the day. Attended to important business for Pres Grant. [page break]
11 August 1928 • Saturday
Jack Hansen & I went down to the golf links and played a game in the morning.
In the afternoon Mother and I took Hugh & Sarah and the children choke-cherrying. We sent out near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and got a good supply. While our car was parked at the roadside a Jos. Eyre driving fast down the canyon struck the front wheel of our car on the hub cap and while it did our car practically no damage it damaged his car considerably. As mother and Wallace were in the car and Hugh & Sarah on the opposite side of our car we count it Providential that our car was not upset and some injured. May the Lord be praised. In our absence, Estella, Spencer and Barbara came from Tremonton and Edna came from Ogden. They were at a show when we reached home about 9: P.M. They & Jack & Ruby stayed the night with us.
12 August 1928 • Sunday
I went to the Temple about one P.M. Attended Tabernacle services at 2: P.M. Elder Ballard was the Speaker, Pres. Ivins presiding. Edna, Estella, Spencer, Jack & Ruby being with us. I remained home most of the day. I took Mother in auto down to Grant Steeds in the [page break] S.E. part of the City on 13th E. to see her sister Annie who just returned from Los Angeles after an absence of about 11 mos. We took her and her three girls to their suit in the Bedel Apts. on East Main St.
I am getting better of my lameness.
13 August 1928 • Monday
This day is Temple opening day. I presided & spoke at the morning meeting and read some observations on Temple Service. At the conclusion of the meeting Bro. Christensen and Sister Gates requested what I read for the Genealogical magazine, which request was granted. This day is opening day for the public at Richards’ Motor Co. Office and a parade was had with four DeSoto Cars, a band in band wagon & a DeSota on horse back, banners &c. The principle Streets were traversed in the City. I attended to my sealing work at the Temple and other work at desk &c A warm day. My lameness is about the same as yesterday.
Hugh J. used the Franklin Car to go to West Jordan.
This day by request of the Presidency I released Lorenzo Stobe from being a Temple worker. This necessitated appointing another to direct the work two evenings each week. After consulting my assistant Jos. Fielding Smith and Recorder Jos. Christensen I appointed Charles R. Jones to take charge Monday and Wednesday nights. Mother & I voted at the Primary election. I spent sometime in the evening at Richards Motor Co. Plans of B. [page break]

Warm weather continues.
My lameness not much changed the past few days.
I went golfing with George & LeGrand at 5 A.M. and was gone just two hours. After bathing, shaving &c I went to the Temple and spent most of the day. This is the first day of the new arrangement by which Tuesdays is to be devoted to baptismal work.
I have been appointed by the First Presidency to attend the Indian War Veterans Encampment in Spanish Fork Thu. Aug. 16th and I this day have prepared a written speech to be given on that occasion.
15 August 1928 • Wednesday
Attended to my duties in the Temple. I sealed 19 couples young people and 8 previously married people in the second session, also several families of children Attended prayer circle in the early evening and later a director’s meeting of Richards Motor Co. which continued until 11: P.M.
16 August 1928 • Thursday
I attended Temple meeting and then with Mother, Sarah & Hugh and Ruby in the car we drove to Spanish Fork where by appointment I attended the Indian War Veterans Encampment and made a brief talk. Returned home and later took Mother, Edith, Josephine & Lucena down to Mamie’s in Sugar House & from there went up to Nervas on 8th East Between 6 & 7 So and got Nerva, [page break] Thelma & Alice & one other and took them down to Mamie’s where a shower was given Thelma who expects to marry next Tuesday.

I spent about 11 hours in the Temple Had two interviews with the First Presidency. I had suggested appointing J. E. Talmage assistant in the Temple Presidency. The matter taken under advisement. Other matters were discussed. I made ready to take train for Shelly, Idaho at 11:50 P.M.
18 August 1928 • Saturday
Arrived in Shelley at 8:28 A.M. I was met by E. Milton Christensen of the Stake Presidency, and was taken to his home where we remained until meeting time. I spoke in the forenoon meeting 30 minutes. Admonished the people to live their religion and answer every call. Commanded them for what they had one in building a stake Tabernacle.
In the afternoon I occupied 50 Min. Subject: count your blessings, inspired by the song of that title sung at opening. The gospel a gift & blessing appreciated the more by contrasting it with Church & England & other Churches & their creeds &c After the meeting, I assisted by the Presidency administered to several people. We went 9 miles to Idaho Falls and at the hospital administered to Bro. Fred C Mickelsen, Shelley Stake. Clerk who was in a dying Condition. I went with the Stake President, J B Larsen to his home 10 miles distant [page break] where I spent the night.

Shelley.
Am well except Sciatica.
At the forenoon meeting I occupied 35 minutes, Subject: An appeal for assistance in completing the stake Tabernacle, tithing, word of Wisdom, fast offerings, sacrifice &c.
At the 2 P.M. meeting I occupied about 40 minutes. Showed how a restoration must be preceded by a universal falling away. Showed that it had been foretold as well as the restoration, how it had been accomplished, admittedly by leading religionists. How gratified we should be for the new light. I had good liberty in all the meetings. We heard from the present & past stake Presidency and from several recently returned missionaries. I took 3:30 P.M. train at Shelley and arrived in Salt Lake at 10:25 P.M. Grand Taggart of Lovell Wyo. entertained me most of the time on the train.
When I arrived home I found Spencer, Estella & baby & Edna who had been there Since Saturday.

Home
Mother & I spent most of the day at the Temple. Our grand daughter Thelma was married in the Temple. I performed the ceremony, and attended the reception in the evening.
21 August 1928 • Tuesday
My son George, his wife & I played [page break] a game of golf at noon time. I later went to the Temple where I attended to correspondence &c. Several callers were waited upon including Pres. Clawson.
22 August 1928 • Wednesday
Mother and I spent about 11 hrs. in the Temple having a busy day. From there we went home and spent the evening by ourselves.
23 August 1928 • Thursday
I spoke at the Morning Temple meeting at 8:30 and attended a meeting of the Twelve from 9 to 10 o’clock. Attended regular weekly meeting of the Twelve & Presidency from 10 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. At this meeting I was appointed to go to Portland to attend a dedicatory service where the corner stone is to be laid for a stake Tabernacle or Mission Tabernacle which is estimated will cost $100,000.00; also to investigate the proposal to make a stake of Zion in the North West. I am to leave at 11:10 tonight. The Service is to be held Saturday the 25th

I left Salt Lake Thurs. night and arrived in Portland at 7:15 to-day, Saturday 25th I was met at the Ry Station by Pres. Sloan and taken to the mission home, thence to the Site of the New Tabernacle and inspected the work being done. At 1:00 P.M. Attended a meet[page break]ing of the Missionaries of the Portland District and gave them instructions At 6: P.M. attended services of the laying of the Corner Stone to the Tabernacle which is to cost $108,000.00. I made a brief talk and then laid the Corner Stone at the N. East Corner if I am not mixed on direction. When laid I so announced in the following [way?] “I solemnly declare that the Corner Stone of this Church Tabernacle which is to be built on this spot of ground to the honor and glory of God the Eternal Father and His Son Jesus Christ is now officially laid.”

Portland, Oregon.
I attended and spoke at 10: A.M. Sunday School at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. public meetings and was blessed of the Lord in so doing. I took 10:45 P.M. train for home.

Arrived home at 7:55 A.M. from Portland. I played a game of golf with George & LeGrand & took dinner at Lucenas and thence to the Temple for the afternoon, where I attended to correspondence and other book & desk work.
29 August 1928 • Wednesday
Mother and I went to the Temple in the early morning as usual and there spent the day, a busy day. Elder James E. Talmage was the Speaker at the Temple meeting. [page break]
I sealed between 15 & 20 couples living people and spent nearly twelve hours in the Temple—
I attended my prayer circle meeting at 6:30 and after Circle Mother and I took Aunt Estella & Sister Anna Miller to their homes below 21st So St. We called on our daughter Sarah for a brief visit.

Mother and I went to the Temple in the early morning as usual. Horace H. Cummings was Speaker at the Temple meeting.
I attended weekly Council meeting of the Presidency & the Twelve.
