Am well

I assisted Bishop Cooper in administering to Bros. Albert L. Jones and John A. Swapp.

Pres. Jones accompanied by his counselor, Bunker, took me to Moapa, 16 miles, where I got No. 4 train at 11:55 A.M. and reached home the following morning at 6:30.

All well. Mild weather

I arrived in S.L. City from Moapa at 6:30 A.M. After shaving, bathing &c went to my office Assisted in setting apart a company of 56 missionaries I set apart seven, I think.

Made appointments for the brethren to attend conferences.

Mother, Oliver, Esella, Ray and I took supper at Lucena’s. Mother & I attended the Sousa Concert in the Tabernacle in the evening. Complimentary tickets. It was grand.

All well

Pleasant day.

I spent the forenoon at my office. Administered a blessing to Ezra Clark Robinson at his request.

I this day paid for three years’ fire insurance on our home & barn $6,000.00 Policy

4 December 1919 • Thursday

All well

Fine day.

I attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 4 P.M. I also attended to business in the office &c.

5 December 1919 • Friday

Home.

All pretty well. I have some cold.

I spent the day in my office and in the evening attended a picture show in the 27th ward meeting house. It rained during the day and snowed at night.

6 December 1919 • Saturday

I have cold.

Snowing.

Accompanied by Pres. S. B. Young, [page break] I left Salt Lake at 7 A.M. and went to Morgan where we arrived at 9:45 A.M.

I attended the conference meetings at 10 A.M. & 2 P.M. and spoke at each. I spoke principally upon the subject of tithing at both meetings and had good liberty. Took dinner at the home of Bro. Alonzo Travis, Bishop, and spent the night at Pres. Heiner’s.

7 December 1919 • Sunday

Morgan.

I am well. except slight cold. Much snow and still snowing.

I attended 10 A.M. and 9:30 meetings and spoke at both. I took dinner at the home of Sister Turner, widow of former Bishop. In morning meeting I spoke upon the subject of love & honor to parents & to God. In the afternoon I spoke of the ordinances, laws and duties necessary to salvation. Something more than faith needed. Pres Young & I left meeting before its close and got train at about 3:20 P.M. for home. Arrived home at 6 P.M. and attended 27th ward evening meeting. Mrs Rydalch occupied 50 min. principally upon the life of Christ.

8 December 1919 • Monday.

Am well Stormy

I shoveled snow, making paths &c.

Mother had arranged to [page break] entertain the Richards Sisters and I remained home and visited with them. There were present Aunts, Nerva, Louise, Lucy, Marian, Annie, and Sister Talmage and Maria K. Howells. A good dinner was served and a pleasant afternoon spent.

All well Cold day.

Considerable snow on ground. I spent most of the day at my office. Assisted in setting apart a company of 48 missionaries. I also ordained one of them an elder, I went to Keith O’ Bryans and bought five records for the Amberola. Geo. & Edith called in & took supper and spent an hour with us after supper.

10 December 1919 • Wednesday

All well.

Much snow.

I spent the forenoon in my office and read through the 96 paged book on the Mormon Battalion. In the afternoon I set apart John Quincy Adams, his wife and two other elders missionaries to Samoa and set Bro Adams apart to preside over that mission. I attended the MIA Gen. Bd. meeting and my circle meeting. [page break]

Cold and Stormy.

I attended weekly council meeting in the temple in forenoon and spent most of the afternoon with Mother Christmas shopping. We bought a shirt for each of our sons and sons in law. The evening was spent until a late hour talking over and planning for a family Xmas.

12 December 1919 • Friday

Home.

Very Cold. Much snow.

I spent the day in my office and the evening at my daughter Sarah’s. Present, Mother Nina & baby, Bros. Jos F. Smith, H. G. Smith, Huckly & Michelson of the Liberty Stake presidency and their wives. A good supper was served and a royal good time was had. Orin came after supper.

13 December 1919 • Saturday

All usually well. I have slight bronchal trouble

Last night the thermometer reached 10° below zero, as reported. Sleighing is good in and about Salt Lake but we see no sleighs. No horses. The Automobiles have displased horses.

I filled my appointment at the Cottonwood [page break] Stake Conference held in the Granite Stake Tabernacle. Bp. David A. Smith was present at the afternoon session.

I spoke at both sessions and occupied about 40 min. in each. In the forenoon I spoke principally upon the subject of meeting going and the doing of missionary work.

In the afternoon I spoke upon the personality of God and man’s eternal progression; following the course of the Father and the Son. Also the first principles of the Gospel. I had good liberty. After the meeting Bp. D. A. Smith and I went to the home of Deceased Bp. Oren P. Miller to visit his widow but we found no one at home.

Returning home I wrote up my journal for the past three days, read the papers and did some studying. Weather extremely cold.

14 December 1919 • Sunday

Below zero weather.

I attended the Cottonwood Stake Conference held in Granite Stake Tabernacle at 10 A.M. & 2 P.M. and spoke at both meetings.

Attended 27th ward evening meeting at which Dr Widtsoe was speaker. [page break]

15 December 1919 • Monday

Home.

I spent the day at my office No. 213 Administration or Church Offices Building.

In the evening, I took supper at my daughter Mamie’s. It was the fourth anniversary of her marriage day and the birth day of Marjori, one year old.

Orin & Nina, Mother, Ray and Estella were with us.

Cold weather and good sleighing, but no sleighs in evidence. The auto has taken the place of the horses and buggies and sleighs.

16 December 1919 • Tuesday

Home.

Temperature somewhat moderated but no indications of a thaw.

I spent the day in my office from 10 A.M. to 5:45 P.M.

Spent the evening at home. Oliver did not go to School to-day on account of illness. Feels some better towards evening. I am spending what time I can spare at my office preparing subjects for a new commentary or memorandum. I shall have to have the subject matter typewritten when prepared.

About 9:20 P.M. I received [page break] a phone call from the L.D.S. Hospital, from Sister Jos. Howell asking me to come up there and administer to her daughter Mary Steed, wife of James J. Steed of Farmington who was in a very critical condition physically. She gave birth to a baby about a week ago which died soon after birth and she now has pneumonia. I arranged with my son Joel to go with me and he took me up in his car. The Mother’s husband, sister and two brothers were present also a Bro. Hagen. We kneeled and I offered prayr and then Joel anointed and I sealed the anointing. May God grant her restoration if it be not contrary to his will.

Weather about the same as yesterday.

I spent the day in my office from 9 to 5 and then attended Y.M.M. Bd. and Circle meetings. Am working on new Commentary.

Mary Howell Steed to whom we administered last evening, died at 4:30 this morning.

18 December 1919 • Thursday

All well

No thaw yet. [page break]

I attended council meeting from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.

I spent some time in my office before meeting and after. Left my office at 6 P.M.

We had the Ward Teachers in the evening. I gave $2.00 for Xmas poor. My purse was about depleted.

President Grant and party returned last night from the Hawaiian Islands where they went to dedicate the temple. They were with us in meeting to-day.

19 December 1919 • Friday

All well.

I spent some time at my office in the forenoon and took 12:15 train for Richfield, Ut, arriving at about 8:30 P.M. Bp. John Wells accompanied me

We were met at the station by Pres. Robert D. Young and his counselor James M. Peterson and taken in auto to the formers’ home where we made our staying place while in Richfield.

20 December 1919 • Saturday

Richfield, Ut.

All well.

I attended 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. meetings and spoke at the former. After meeting I ordained Jesse Thornell a High Priest and a Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Salina Second ward. I ordained [page break] Albert Verge Thalman a High Priest and a Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Vermilion Ward.

I ordained Levi Sorensen a High Priest and a Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Aurora Ward.

The members of the Stake Presidency and their wives took supper with us at Pres. Young’s home where a pleasant evening was Spent together.

21 December 1919 • Sunday.

Richfield.

Am well.

I attended 10 A.M., 2 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. conference meetings and a Priesthood meeting at 4:30 and spoke at each of these meetings. In the evening I occupied about an hour on the Subject of Character. Good liberty and good satisfaction given. May the Lord be praised.

22 December 1919 • Monday

Richfield, Ut.

Am well

Bp. Wells and I left for home at 8:30 A.M. and arrived in Salt Lake at 4 P.M. I went to my office where I received a check from Pres. E. J. Wood of Cardston, Canada, as interest on Stephen E Tagus’ note. I was also presented with a check of $400 by Arthur Winter by direction of Pres. Grant. 10% [illegible] [page break] beginning with the first of the year & then $40.00 extra. This comes in very handy to help with my debts and to assist in making a good Christmas. I am informed also today by Pres. Grant that my 15 shares of Implement Vehicle Stock is now worth par $100. each share and that a dividend of 8% will likely be declared for the past year leaving a part of the earnings for a reserve fund. Financially this has been a prosperous day. May the Lord be praised. I made several checks in payment of debts including one to Bp. C. W. Nibley for tithing on the monies received to day making my tithing full to date.

George, LeGrand and Joel called in to see us after the Stake Priesthood meeting.

While in Richfield I blessed Pres. Jensen’s wife, Pres. Young’s daughter Mary Veluca and a Brother Edward Nuaby, assisted by others of the brethren.

23 December 1919 • Tuesday

Home.

All well.

Nina fell on the stairs with her baby in arms and hurt her back badly. She fainted & Joel & I and Orin administered to her. She soon rallied.

I polished floors in forenoon and about noon Mother [page break] Edna and I went shopping. We got home about 6 P.M. George & Joel went out to Tooele this morning with their cars and brought Geo. L. & family in to spend Xmas.

We had two turkeys sent us from the First Presidency and the Presiding Bishopric with their compliments. We will need them as we expect to have 44 people at dinner Thursday.

I do not forget that this is the 114th anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

24 December 1919 • Wednesday

All well.

On account of Christmas coming on Thursday, our Council meeting is held in the temple to-day. I was in meeting from 10 A.M. until between 3 & 4 P.M. Attended to some business at my office and spent the evening buying and otherwise preparing for Christmas. We did not all get to bed until between 3:30 and 4 A.M.

25 December 1919 • Thursday

Christmas at home.

All well.

Ideal weather.

Geo. L. & Nerva and all their children also LeGrand and all his family stayed at Georg F. Jr.’s home. Joel and family joined them and they had a large and beautiful tree and many presents. With us, were Lucena & Rega [page break] and family; Mamie & Clarence and family, Nina & Oren & baby besides our unmarried children, and we also had a beautiful tree brought in from Tooele.

We had all the grownups and babies with us to Supper at 5 P.M. while the Children were fed at Joels’ home. One turkey was used here and the other at Joels. We spent the evening at our home. Many presents were given and received. Among them, Mother and I received a gift from the grownups in cluding my sister Nerva of a set of 12 silver knives & forks & tea spoons and a butter knife, berry spoon & a soup ladel. This was a valuable present, and one much needed as we have never had such silver ware before.

My son LeGrand and his family slept in their new home at night for the first time

Mother & I received many Xmas cards. I sent several Xmas Letters.

26 December 1919 • Friday

Home.

All usually well.

This is an unusually bright and pleasant mornings.

All seem to feel pretty well after Christmas celebration.

I spent the forenoon at home cleaned up after Xmas doings. Did some writing &c. [page break]

I went to my office about 1 P.M. Attended special prayr circle called in behalf of Pres. Richard W. Young whose condition was reported as being critical. After this prayr meeting I accompanied Pres. H. J. Grant and Elder M. J. Ballard to the L.D.S. hospital were we assisted by several other brethren administered to President R. W. Young and to Pres. Henry Blood of North Davis Stake. Later in the day, Bro. Fred Grant phoned me that Pres. Young’s condition was some more favorable.

I attended an informal meeting at Elder R. R. Lymans office to consider important mutual matters.

The evening was spent at the home of my son George, with other members of the family.

27 December 1919 • Saturday

Home.

Excepting cold, our folks are all well. Weather cold and plenty of snow for sleighing.

My daughter Nerva, Geo. L. and children spent a part of the day with us. Joel took us up to the State Capitol building which we inspected for the first time. Alice & I attended a reception at my nephew S. L. Richards in the evening. A turky supper was served and a pleasand evening spent. [page break] At 7:20 P.M. to-day Pres. Richard W. Young died as a result of acute appendicitis & operation.

28 December 1919 • Sunday

Home.

I spent the forenoon at home.

I called on my cousin Minerva Young and family Attended meeting in the Large Tabernacle and offered the closing prayr. Attended 27th ward meeting in the evening. Joseph E. Robinson was the Speaker in the 27th ward meeting and Melvin J. Ballard in the Large Tabernacle. Mother and I took supper at Mamies’. Geo L. & Nerva and their children were there also.

George & Edith came in after the evening meeting and remained until after eleven o’clock A pleasant day and evening. I have taken some cold during the day.

29 December 1919 • Monday

I spent the day at my office and the evening at home. Nerva & Geo L. and their children, Geo. F. Jr. & family, Nin[a] and Orin besides our regular family were at supper and spent the evening with us.

30 December 1919 • Tuesday

Home.

All well.

I was in attendance at [page break] the quarterly meeting of the Twelve from 9 A.M. to about 5 P.M., in the temple. A party was formed and we went to the “American” in the evening, eight of us, Geo F. Jr., Joel & Geo. L. Tate & I and our wives.

31 December 1919 • Wednesday

Home.

All well.

I attended Quarterly meeting of the Presidency, the Twelve and the Patriarch held in the temple fasting. The Sacrament was administered.

I attended the funeral services of President Richard W. Young held in the large Tabernacle. Mother, Oliver and I went to the Cemetery with Joel and Georgina in their car. I judge that there were seven or eight thousand people in the Tabernacle.

A military escourt was in the procession with all the honors due General Young’s rank as Brig. General. For fuller account of the proceedings see the “News” of this date.

I spent the evening at Joels with other members of the family and saw the old year out and the New Year in. Retired about 2 A.M. [page break]
