All well.
Warm day.
I administered a blessing unto my daughter Lucena who is nearing time for confinement.
I worked on Commentary all the forenoon and took train for home at 5:50 P.M. with Mama, Edna & Ray. Finished reading, “At the Foot of the Rainbow.”
Arrived home at 10:00 i.e. in S. Lake. All well. [p. 149]

All usually well.
Some rain fell.
I attended weekly council meeting in the temple from 10:00 A.M. to 2:45 P.M. Attended to several items of business and took Oliver to the Doctors and had him examined. Dr Stephen & Dr Ridges examined his throat & nose and advised that his tonsils & adenoids be taken out which we intend to have done when I can be home a day or two to witness it.
I received the appointment with Patriarch Hyrum G. Smith to Fremont Stake for Sep. 11th & 12th
Joel & wife & Mama & I went out to Salt Air on 5:00 P.M. train but on account of the wind, rain & rough lake we did not remain long but returned & went to the Empress.
I leave with Pres. R. S. Wells for Star Valley tonight. Wrote up my journal before leaving.

Left Salt Lake at 11:45 last night. Arrived at McCamman at 5:10 and Mt Pelier at 9:20 A.M. to-day, Pres. R.S. Wells accompanying me. We rode with Madison [blank] a 15 yr old boy 28 or 30 miles [p. 150] over the mountain to Books’ ranch and from there on 15 miles to Fair View and staid over night at Sister Brown’s. Muddy roads & cold day.

Pres. Wells & I rode with Pres. Albert Barns from Fair View to Thayne ward 18 miles before meeting.
At 10:00 A.M. meeting I was one of three speakers and occupied 45 minutes. Subject. Operations of the Holy Spirit in the church, Fast offerings &c. Attendance 161.
At 2:00 P.M. Session I was one of five speakers & occupied about 30 min. Subj. Religion Class work in the church & kindred subjects. Every means should be employed to “save our children.” Attendance 248. We held meeting in the Ward Opera house. Pres. Wells & I were bed fellows at Bp. Geo. C. Millers. We were given complimentary tickets & went to the Show, “Hearts of Oak.” Rained during the night.

Am well.
Fasted. Att. 388. At 10:00 A.M. meeting I occupied about 50 min. Subj. Gospel Origin & one Gospel only & that the Gospel received & taught by the L.D.S. [p. 151]
Sacrament administered. At 2:00 P.M. meeting the authorities were sustained. I was one of the Speakers & occupied about 45 min. Subject. Witnesses for Mormonism Three & 8 witnesses to B. of Mormon & numerous Saints. Read testimonies & Biographies of three witnesses. After meeting a brother brought his little boy about 10 yrs of age up & said here is a living testimony as this boy had been near deaths door with Diabetis & is now well & attributed it to my administering to him on a former occasion.
Between meetings Pres Wells & I rode down to Freedom ward six miles to see the town & the valley.
After meeting we left in Auto and went to Afton 16 miles. Here I got supper at Pres. Arthur F. Burton’s and as his wife was beginning to be sick, confinement, & desired it, I blessed her for the occasion & condition.
Pres. Wells & I left in Ford car with Horace Call & his young wife left Afton at 7:00 P.M. and rode about 13 miles to a brother Lucas home in the canyon arriving there at 11:00 P.M. Auto troubles & bad roads the cause. Pres Wells [p. 152] and I got a bed and slept until 4:20 A.M. when we got up and after working with the car about half hour started out and after much lifting & walking & hauling we got to Montpelier at 2:30 P.M. We took dinner there and went from there on 4:20 P.M. train to Pocatillo and while waiting for train from West to get a car, we attended two picture Shows. Took car at 11:45 P.M. Lame from walking so much in the mud.

Arrived Safely in Salt Lake at 8:20 A.M. All usually well at home except Oliver. He is suffering from lameness. I went about my writing. Wrote up my journal from notes since last Thursday
Mailed checks in payment of bills. Alice & I went to the Orpheum in the afternoon & then called at Dr. Stephen’s office & consulted about Oliver’s condition, lameness &c.

All well as usual except Oliver’s lameness.
I spent the forenoon home until 9:30. Attended a meet[p. 153]ing at Bps. Bldg where I assisted in setting apart and instructing a company of fifteen missionaries to the different missions of the U States. I set apart the fol.,
1. Walter Jerold Carver of Preston, Ida to S. States
2. Ivan Henry Burton of Park Valley to C.S.
3. Arthur Wm Grix of Ogden, to California
4. Miss Bertha Anderson, Annabella, to C.S.
Alice & I took Oliver to the Doctor’s office & we were shown an Xray photograph of Oliver’s hip joint which shows an abnormal growth. Dr Stephen made a test to ascertain whether he has Tuburcular trouble Alice & I went to the Lagoon on 4:30 S.L & O. train to a reception tendered to the returning Stake presidency & clerk of Davis Stake. Had a good supper & visit with the people.
Arrived home at about 9:30 P.M. Wrote up journal for the day &c. A Dutch brother called on us. I this day filed with the temple recorder Joseph Christensen a check of $37.50 and 50 names of males to be endowed for. This is $37.50 Alice Ann contributed.

From my journal I find the information that Oliver (my son) had weight, flat iron, suspended from his left leg from Mar 25, 1909 to Apr. 9, 1909, and was in plaster from Aug. 4, 1909 to Dec. 7, 1909.
Attended Weekly Council meeting in temple from 10 AM to 3:00 P.M. Made report on my visit to Star Valley & received appointment to Duchesne Stake for Sept. 18th & 19th. I studied for M.IA. Conference work. Mama & I called on our Sons Geo & Joel in the evening.
I shingled Oliver & Ray.
Had the names of Oliver L. Richards, Joseph Hyrum Grant and Zina Y. Card put on the prayr role & prayed for in our circle meeting this day.

All usually well.
Oliver better of his lameness, Nina & Georgina better of their colds.
I mowed the lawn, front & back, shaved, bathed and worked at my desk in forenoon.
After noon took Oliver to the Dr. office where he was examined by Drs Richards & Tyree. The Tuburcular test showed no signs of disease. [p. 155] They think the hip trouble is healed, but there is an abnormal condition. The left & lame leg is longer. I got him some new shoes and had the Right shoe raised a lift on the sole and 5/8 inch on the heel.
Received Masonic apron owned by father Willard Richards, held by Mother Asenath & came to me from my Sister Nerva.
Alice and I attended a reception tendered the temple workers & Presidency & Twelve by James G McDonald at his factory Gardens.
Took 11:45 P.M. train with my daughter Sarah & Pat. H. G. Smith for Rexburg, Ida.
11 September 1915 • Saturday
Arrived at Rexburg, Ida. at 9:45 A.M. We were met at the Ry. Station by M.I.A. workers and taken in auto to the Stake tabernacle where at 10:00 A.M. the conference opened, this session being a joint officer’s meeting of the Y.M. & Y.L. M.I.A. I presented the first three topics requiring 40 min. time. My daughter Sarah presented the 4th topic and Elder Hyrum G. Smith the 5th and 4 Ym and 3 Y.L. [p. 156] discussed these topics. Attendance 279. At 2: P.M. conference meeting the attendance was 367. Bro. Manwaring of the Rix Academy occupied 30 min. Subject Religion Class work.
Pres. Mark Austin and I also spoke. I occupied about 25 Min. Subject, the greatness & efficiency of the Mormon Church and its compliment to its founder Joseph Smith.
In the evening I attended a social gathering of the Y.M & Y.L. in the Academy building where sample evening home meetings was held by a brother [blank] of Sugar City & his family, and model dances were had. A good time was had and a good spirit prevailed.
We three visitors staid at Pres. Austins.

All well.
Cool weather.
Attended 9:00 A.M. Religion Class meeting in School building. Other visitors attended M.I.A. conventions. I made a talk on R. Class work. At 10:30 Attended Conference meeting in the tabernacle, attendance 931. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 20 minutes on the subject of honoring parents. Good liberty. [p. 157]
At 2:00 P.M. meeting the attendance 1055. I was the last speaker and occupied 35 min. Subject. Origin of the gospel, One Gospel only recognized of God. This which we have received is the one. Some Sectarian follies corrected.
At evening meeting I occupied about 20 minutes on Subj. of Religion Class work. Sarah & Bro H G. Smith also spoke.
We had to hurry at close of the meeting to catch the train for home.

Arrived in Salt Lake at 8:15A.M. I went with my wife, my sons George, Oliver, Ray and Seymour Droubay up Emigration Canyon to our home. We fixed things for winter, brought home with us our bedding &c.
I wrote up my journal from notes and did other writing, reading &c. Wrote to LeGrand.

Alice & I took Oliver to the hospittal and had his tonsils & adnoids removed. Dr Ridges operated. We were at the hospittal from 9 A.M. [p. 158] to 5:00 P.M. I read 200 odd pages in a book, “Chip of the Flying U.” Hospittal charges $7.50, Taxy chg 2.50 Doctor’s charge.

Cold night last night.
Pleasant day this. Fire in furnace. Oliver had a fairly good night and is feeling better this morning. Others well.
Ruby is preparing to go to Logan to attend the Agricultural College. Made two trips down town. Attended Y.M.M. Bd meeting & Circle meeting.
Called on Pres. Lyman and spent a half hour with him. In the evening I went up to Joels he & Georgina being away and brother Thomas Finch being there sick. My Son George & I administered to him, gave him Sal Hepatica. Ruby was staying with him until Joel & Georgina’s return from Brigham.

At 7:00 A.M. we received phone call from Tooele informing us that my daughter Nerva gave birth last mid night to a large fine baby boy, mother & son doing well.
I went up to Joels & he & I ad[p. 159]ministered to Brother Thos. Finch. Attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Wrote to Nerva, to C. A. Welch and to Pres. E. J. Wood of Canada also to Rega & Lucena.

I made two trips down town during the day.
Finished reading, “A Daughter of the North” by Nephi Anderson, 256 p. Made preparation to take 12:55 A.M. train for Helper, thence by Auto to Myton, Duchesne Stake. Worked at my desk until 9:30 P.M. and left soon after for train.
18 September 1915 • Saturday
Arrived at Helper at 5:30 A.M. Had a good night’s sleep. Took breakfast at “Hotel Helper.” Left on Auto stage at 7:00 A.M. and arrived in Duchesne at 11:40 A.M. after a wait of an hour 40 min. we continued on to Myton 63 miles from Helper arriving there about 3:00 o’clock. I was met by Pres. Wm H. Smart and taken to a rooming house where he was staying and he & I occu[p. 160]pied the same room, separate beds. I accompanied Pres. Smart to the ball game & fare being in progress and did not go out to the dance at night.

Attended 9:00 A.M. Religion Class meeting and answered many questions under discussion by religion class officers and bishops, high counselors &c. At 10:30 A.M. conference meeting convened a special program having been arranged for the occasion. Indian Agent Albert H. Kneal was present and had ten or twelve leading indians on the stand. Mr. Kneal spoke of the progress made among the Indians since the opening of the reservation lands to entry ten years ago. Pres. Ephraim Lambert spoke of the progress made in an ecclesiastical way since the Duchesne stake was organized five years ago. Bro Oneal a High Counselor spoke and I concluded with a 20 min. talk on subjects suggested by previous speakers. Attendance 323. At afternoon session the attendance was 421. Authorities sustained. [p. 161]
A sister Hale Colegate reported the congress or convention of Genealogical workers held in San Francisco recently. I occupied by request the remaining time 65 min. Subject assigned me, “The Angel Moroni’s visitations which included gospel restoration & temple work. The presidency of the Uintah Stake were in attendance at today’s meetings. After this meeting we held a meeting of the bishops & counselors. At this informal meeting I, assisted by the Stake Presidency, ordained and set apart a number of officers as follows.
1. Owen Bennion, ordained a bishop and set apart to preside over the Altonah ward.
2. Alma A. Burgener, ordained a bishop & set apart to preside over the Midview ward.
3. Solomon O. Solomonson, ordained an H. Priest & set apart 2nd counselor to Bp. Burgener.
4. Frederick S. Musser, a bishop, was set apart to preside over the Myton ward.
5. Andrew L. Rogers, ordained H. Priest and set apart 1st Counselor to Bp. Musser.
6. Jesse A. Washburn, set apart Stake Supt religion classes.
7. Melvin J. Benson, ordained an H. Priest and set apart, first counselor to Bp. Angus of Mural ward.
8. Jos. Harold Eldredge, ordained an Elder. [p. 162]
9. John K. Lemon, set apart 2nd counselor to Bp. Angus of Mural ward.
Many questions were asked & answered. Ice cream & cake was served.
At night meeting I was first speaker & occupied about 30 min. Subject Religion Class work. Good liberty.
Sister Aggie Campbell representing the Gen. Bd of Y.L.M.I.A. and Oscar Kirkham of YMMIA Gen Bd were present and both spoke the former 12 min, the latter 40 min. Good meeting.
20 September 1915 • Monday
Myton, Ut.
Am well.
Fine day.
I spent the forenoon until 11:00 o’clock reading &c. Took stage Auto to Duchesne about 11:30 o’clock. Spent a couple of hours there and left at 3:00 P.M. for Helper, 50 miles. 14 grown people aboard. Woods Alexander was our driver and he is a safe careful driver. We arrived in Helper at 8:20 P.M. The train was due to leave at 8:30 but was 60 min. late. I took supper at Cafe before my train came. Oscar Kirkham remained with his fatherinlaw Murdock in the Mountains. Sister Campbell & I took same train. She met her brother at depot and I was introduced to him. His engine brot us in. [p. 163] I had standard upper 2. We arrived in Salt Lake at 2:15 A.M. and our car side tracked. My Son George was there on his Moter Cycle to meet me and I dressed and rode home with him reaching home at 2:45 A.M. All usually well. I heated water & bathed before retiring.

Alice, Ray & I took 7:30 A.M. train for Tooele where we went to visit our daughter Nerva & family and see the new grand son. Found them getting along pretty well.
There wrote up my journal for the past three days from notes and memory. I worked several hours on commentary, rewriting and arranging subjects. In the evening Hyrum & Estella Lee came down to Nerva’s where Alice & I were staying and spent a couple of hours.
Alice & I walked part way home with them. J.W. Tate & wife picked us up & took us for a ride about town in auto. Assisted by Elders Hyrum Lee & Geo. L. I administered to Nerva. [p. 164]

I read the news, worked on my commentary &c. Estella Lee came down and visited in afternoon.
Alice Ray & I came home arriving in Salt Lake at 6:00 P.M. I attended my Circle meeting. Assisted my son Joel in administering to his wife after meeting.

Warm day.
I sprinkled the lawn, shaved, bathed and went down town and had a hair cut before going to my Council meeting.
I wrote a letter of resignation as a director in the Utah Implement & Vehicle Co. and mailed to the Co. Pres. H. J. Grant. It is not much of a compliment to be a director in a company failing and no directors meeting for a year or 18 months. No statement of financial conditions. I worked at my desk the remainder of the day. Joel & Georgina called in & took supper and spent the evening.
Geo & Edith left on Moter Cycle for Tooele at 5:20 P.M. and left Josephine & Franklin with us. [p. 165]

Warm day.
I spent the forenoon at my desk. Soon after noon my son-in-law Rega Card phoned from Logan saying that my daughter Lucena was in labor and asking Mother to come up on 2:20 P.M. train. Accordingly Mother, Ray & I took that train and arrived in Logan at 5:45 P.M. We were met at Ry. Station by Rega and informed that at 3:45 o’clock Lucena gave birth to a baby boy & the name selected for him is Richard Y. The babe’s head was somewhat crooked and his nose flattened but the doctor thought it would straighten up. Lucena feeling as well as could be expected. Bp. Guy Thatcher took us up to Rega’s from the depot. Mother was very busy having the sole care of Lucena & the baby. The nurse, Miss Bird, left soon after our arrival. Our 16th grand child, eight boys & 8 girls.

Cold & stormy.
Lucena & baby had a good night I spent the forenoon reading, writing &c and took 2:10 P.M. train for home leaving Mother [p. 166] and Ray in Logan. My brother Fred took me to Logan depot in auto. On train I read from Church magazines. Arrived in Salt Lake at 6:00 P.M. Found all well here.
Mailed letters to Nerva in Tooele and to LeGrand in Holland. Received two letters from LeGrand after mailing his.

Fast day.
I attended Salt Lake Stake conference held in the Assembly hall at 10:00 A.M. The speakers were in order as follows; Pres Nephi L. Morris, myself & Pres. Hart.
I occupied 37 minutes. Commented on conditions as shown by reports and talked on work of officers, likened it to talents. Feed my sheep.” &c.
Attended ward fast meeting, gave my offering and bore testimony, referred to the Sacrament and confirmations. Relationship of Atonement & gospel ordinances, the latter made effective by the Atonement. Operations of the Holy Ghost. O Cowdry’s experience. D&C 6; 8; 9; Pres B. H. Roberts was present and offered the benediction. I assisted in blessing two babies consecration of oil & confirmation. I [p. 167] blessed & named Delbert Wright Hughes. Between meetings I was busy studying. Broke fast at 4:00 P.M.
Attended M.I.A. convention of the Salt Lake Stake in the Assembly Hall in the evening and offered the benediction.
I called at the Presidents’ office after evening meeting and found the book, “Jesus the Christ.” by J. E. Talmage as a compliment from the First Presidency.
This has been a wet day, a gentle rain falling most of the day. I wrote letters to LeGrand and to the Ladd & Tilden Bank of Portland.

I took 7:20 AM train for Logan Spent five hours there with my folks and returned reaching Salt Lake at 10:30 P.M. Lucena & baby are doing nicely. Mother & Ray still there. My cold developing. Others well.

Attended Quarterly meetings of the Twelve from 10 to 4: o’clock with an hour’s recess. [p. 168]
Wrote letter to Mama at Logan.
Pres. Lyman & I administered to Sister Lyman who was taken sick today. He anointed & I sealed the anointing. Spent the evening at my desk reading & writing.

My cold troublesome
I went to the State Fair in forenoon Had appointment with my quorum at 2:00 P.M. where we met and adjourned. So I went to the fair again taking Sarah with me.
I attended my Circle meeting in the evening.
I took a hot bath and hot lemonade before retiring and had a good night’s rest & sleep.

By request of Dr. S L. Richards I sent Oliver to the hospittal at 9:00 A.M. for examination by an expert doctor for his hip trouble, but for some cause no examination was made.
I was in the temple in Council meeting from 10 AM to 3:30 P.M. After which Joel & I went to the fair. [p. 169] Wrote letters in the evening. Letters received from Tooele & Logan.
