Elder A. W. Ivins related a conversation he had with Indian Shem which drew from the Indian a recital of history which had come down through ages from Father to son concerning the “Fall of Man” and the world’s condition before & after what is to come. He said the country was once productive of grain, fruits &c and the people did not have to work except to gather what grew but because of wickedness there was no rain and no fruits & grains and the people had to kill animals to eat. The time is to come when former conditions will again obtain.
Bro Ivins told how the Navajo Indians keep and perpetuate their history and important events. Twelve men keep posted. When one dies a young man takes his place. They say that the Gods mad[e] man and he could only see straight ahead so they send great waters and drownd him. They made another man who could see all sides so they made a mist come over his eyes so that he saw like a man sees when he [page break] has breathed on a mirror. He could see only nearby. &c.
