At home. All fairly well.

Quite a depth of snow is still on the ground and the weather quite brisque. Charles & Edna, Orin & Nina & their children and Riley are with us. Oliver is in Germany doing missionary work and is prospering.

I spent most of the forenoon at home. Soon after noon, Mother, Ruby & I went down to Nerva’s on her invitation. Charles & Edna, Estella, Orin & Nina & children & Ray came down later and we had turkey dinner at 3:30. Orin & I went to the Tabernacle and saw and heard the Handell’s Oratorio, the Messiah which began at 4:00 P.M. and finished at 4:25 P.M. It was a grand affair. Geo. & Edith, LeGrand & Ina, Hugh & Sarah Rega & Lucena came down to Nerva’s later and spent the evening there, returning home about 11:00 P.M. Rook was the most prominent game.

2 January 1925 • Friday

The weather is moderating some. I spent the forenoon at home reading &c Went to the Temple and attended to some desk work. Got my hair cut. Had some dental work done, did some shopping &c In the evening we had our family grownups at our home. Ruby left for Cornish on 7:00 A.M. O.S.L. train, Jack is to meet her at Brigham, or to join her there and accompany her home.

George is better of his throat trouble. Mamie’s baby has some cold so that she & Clarence did not get out to Nerva’s last night. Yesterday I paid Robert W. H. Smith by personal check $90.00 bal in full [page break] for a six tubed Neutrodyne radio receiver including tubes, batteries, cabinet, head phones &c.

I went to the Temple where I worked at my desk as usual for five or six hours. Spent the evening at home with my folks and the radio.

4 January 1925 • Sunday

I attended sacrament meeting and evening Conjoint M.I.A. meeting in the 27th ward. Attended the broadcasted services at 9:00 o’clock, Elder O. F. Whitney was the speaker.

5 January 1925 • Monday

I went to the Temple in the morning as usual. Sealed Bro. Merrill and a sister [blank]. Left the temple after five o’clock. Spent the evening at home.

6 January 1925 • Tuesday

This day we began having endowments on Tuesdays and hereafter we will have four days of endowments each week & five sessions each day. The seating capacity is now 300.

This day I attended to my temple duties, assisted in setting apart missionaries &c. [page break] This day I paid bal. of 350 on my note of $1000 at U.S. & Loan Bank.

Left the Temple about 7:30 P.M. and spent the remainder of the evening at home.

7 January 1925 • Wednesday

I was the speaker at the temple meeting and I sealed fifteen or twenty couples of living people and several families of children. We had an extra session in the evening for Liberty Stake. A busy day. Attended circle meeting and left for home after 7:30 P.M. spent the rest of the evening at home.

8 January 1925 • Thursday

I went to the Temple as usual where I put in about 12 hours. Attended the Weekly Council Meeting of the Presidency & the Twelve from 10:30 to 4:00 P.M. Did some sealing and other work.

I received the appointment to attend the Snowflake conference Sat & Sun Jan 17 & 18th.

9 January 1925 • Friday

I went to the Temple as usual where I spent the day. Attended to a number of important matters in connection with the Temple work. I was interviewed by a number of persons. Left the temple at about 8:00 P.M. Made ready and too 11:50 P.M. train for St. Anthony, Idaho.

10 January 1925 • Saturday

Arrived at St. Anthony at 11:15 A.M. Attended forenoon and afternoon Priesthood Conference-Convention meet[page break]ings and spoke at each. Between meetings and in the evening I was associated with the Stake Presidency in considering changes to be made in the Stake Presidency, High Council & other stake & ward organizations. Retired at midnight after a strenuous day. The new Stake Presidency were selected and other officers selected. I spent the night with Bro. Lowe & family, where I was made very comfortable.

11 January 1925 • Sunday

St. Anthony, Idaho.

Deep snow and still snowing.

I attended the 10 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. Conference meetings & spoke. Before and between meetings, we were busy in council and at the afternoon meeting I presented the releases and the new members or officers.

We made a new Stake Presidency, eight new H. Councilman, reorganized the Stake Reliefsociety, Stake YMM. Superintendency, the first & second St. Anthony ward bishoprics &c. Every thing was done by unanimous concent and good feeling. After meeting I set apart the new officers, twenty-eight in number. Of these I ordained two Bishops and five High Priests and set apart seven bishop’s counselors.

I took train for home at 5:40 P.M.

12 January 1925 • Monday

Arrived in Salt Lake from St. Anthony at 7:15 A.M. Attended Quarterly meeting of the Twelve from 9:30 to 5:15 P.M. A busy day. I spoke as did all others & I offered closing prayer. [page break] Spent the evening with other members of the family at my son George’s home.

13 January 1925 • Tuesday

Presided at the 8:30 A.M. meeting as usual in the Temple. Attended to other duties of the Temple as usual. Attended U.I.V. Co. directors meeting. Decided on the recommendation of the Manager to continue business, having hopes that the ensuing yrs will be better and that we will do a better business. Decided to audit the accounts. Retired from the Temple at about 7: P.M. Spent the evening thereafter at home.

14 January 1925 • Wednesday

Attended to my duties at the temple as usual. In the evening, by appointment, LeGrand & wife, Orin & Nina and Charles & Edna came to the Temple and using them as proxies & witnesses I sealed up thirty-four couples of our dead.

15 January 1925 • Thursday

I attended Temple meeting and from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. attended our weekly Council meeting.

Made ready and took 2:35 P.M. train to Barstow, thence on to Snowflake. While enroute I read 300 pages of “Looking Backward” by Edward Bellamy. Reached Barstow at 9:10 A.M. Friday. Got train out at 2:30 P.M. Arrived in Holbrook at 6,25 A.M. Saturday. David K. Udall Jr took me by auto with several others to Snowflake about 30 miles. Arrived in Snowflake at 9:00 A.M. and went directly to meeting of the Presidency [page break] of the Stake, Bishop & counselors there in session. I addressed the brethren for about 20 min.

17 January 1925 • Saturday

10:00 A.M. I addressed the Priesthood Convention-Conference meeting.

At 2:00 P.M. I addressed the Conference meeting for about 50 minutes with splendid liberty. Attended Priesthood meeting at 6:30 and addressed that meeting. I took supper with Bro & Sis Jos. Peterson.

This has been a strenuous day, but I have been exceedingly blessed of the Lord, and am happy.

18 January 1925 • Sunday

Snowflake.

Am well

Cold weather.

At Pres. Samuel F. Smith’s home. I took dinner & supper with Brother and sister Homer F. Bushman. During the day, assisted by other brethren, I administered to a number of people.

I attended and spoke at a 9:00 A.M. meeting of the Stake Board of Education, at the 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. Con. meetings and at the 7:30 M.IA meeting occupying from 20 to 50 minutes each. In the evening I spoke upon the slogan, “Honor Thy Father & thy Mother,” 35 min. In the afternoon, Forgiveness, Fault finding, Bearing false witness, oneness &c, 50 min. In the forenoon, I spoke of my experiences as faith promotion, and Lesser Priesthood. I attended a H. Council meeting at 4:20 P.M. Set apart a number of officers. The Lord helped me and I had good liberty and am very happy. Spent a good and restful night. Am well and happy. [page break]

I wrote to my wife also to Bp. Christensen sending names of a number of sick people to the Temple to be prayed for. I wrote up my journal for the past two days, and attended to other writing. Yesterday I administered to & blessed five people as follows, assisted by others of the brethren.

Am well and happy.

I wrote a lengthy letter to my son Oliver who is doing missionary work in Germany. Pres. Smith & wife invited Pres. Peterson & wife to dine with us. [page break] I spent the forenoon studying & writing and in being entertained and after noon I left for St Joseph lately changed to Joseph City, with Bp. Jno. F. Miller. At Holbrook, I was met by Bp. Westover of Joseph City and taken on to Joseph City. I took supper at the home of the Bishop. Attended a well attended meeting in the evening and for about an hour addressed the meeting upon the first principles of the Gospel and Genealogical and temple work. Had good liberty. I stayed over night with Bro. Randall of the Bishopric.

21 January 1925 • Wednesday

Am well and happy.

The following subjects received my attention during the several meetings of the Conference at Snowflake.

Sat 10 A.M.: P. Convention. Utilization of the Lesser Priesthood. How vitalize quorums and members? Give them work to do. What work? &c.

Sat 2 P.M. 50 min. Topics “Forgiveness and Bearing False witness.”

Sun 10 A.M. Convention suggestions: My experiences, Administering to my mother, to Annie Lee, St John’s Case, Snowflake Case. Patriarchal Blessing & Prophecy, Sam’l Lee Case &c.

Sun 2 P.M. Thy will be done. Obedience, acceptance of authorities & their interpretation of the Lord’s will. Be good & do good. Help to save souls.

Sun 7:30 P.M. Slogan. Honor thy Father and thy Mother. Recited “Which Shall it be?” & “A Mother to her Son.”

This day, the 21st, I took dinner with Brother & sister John McLaws, Jr. [page break] With Bishop Westover, I visited the new dam in the Colorado which was built at a cost of about fourteen thousand dollars. Called on Pres. Samuel F. Smiths married daughter Alice & her husband, a Bro Hansen. In the evening I went to Holbrook and spoke at a meeting called for this purpose occupying about 50 minutes. Subject. Gospel defined and Pre-existence as a fundamental of the Gospel and the necessity of considering the fundamentals first. Had good liberty & help but as there were but 26 present I spoke in a fireside tone and with deliberation, rather reasoning with my audience. A Lincoln Show had been advertised and that no doubt took a number of our people. One non member, a lady was present.

After meeting I administered to Pearl J. Farr and Louise Minges. Before the meeting I administered to Pearl A. Westover of Joseph City and Martha Williams of Holbrook. I spent the night at the home of David K. Udall, Jr.

22 January 1925 • Thursday

Holbrook.

Am well.

Cold morning.

I administered to Willard Farr’s baby Ethel Farr. I left Holbrook at 10:20 A.M. with stage and arrived in St. John’s at 1:25 P.M. roads good and I rode in comfort. Dr. Hinckley seat companion. I spent a busy afternoon writing, reading, visiting &c. I wrote a letter home to Mother enclosing names of the sick for prayers at the temple. I also wrote to Pres. Samuel F. Smith. [page break]

I am well and happy.

I attended the Seminary at 9:45 and addressed a class of students.

Attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency at 4:30 P.M. and a meeting of the Stake Presidency and High Council at 7:30 P.M. I was the principal speaker in each of these meetings.

24 January 1925 • Saturday

Am well

Weather moderating

At 10 A.M. Priesthood-Convention meeting, I occupied about 40 mins. Subject. Vitalization of quorums and members of quorums. Work that members of the Priesthood quorums, that can do and should be given them to do. Teaching them how to do their work well. At 1:30 meeting I occupied about 30 minutes. Use of ordained teachers and priests in Ward Teaching work. Importance of the work &c.

At 3:00 P.M. funeral service of Wm. H. Gibbons I occupied about 30 min. Attended a meeting of the H. Council in the evening and after the meeting discussed matters with the Stake Presidency. We released five members of the H. Council and filled their vacancies with four alternates and another dispensing with alternates.

Have urged one job and all employed and distribution of offices and of responsibilities and took steps to accomplish it.

25 January 1925 • Sunday

St. Johns.

I attended a meeting of Teacher. Training at 9:00 A.M. and addressed the meeting.

At the 10:00 A.M. Conference meeting I occupied about 30 minutes. Subj: Lesser Priesthood. Told story of a [illegible] girl & talked to the girls & boys.

At 2 P.M. Meeting I occupied 50 min. Subject: How to avoid disappointments in this life & in the life beyond. History repeats itself. Genealogy & temple work. I rode to Holbrook after meeting with a brother Patterson. Pres. Jacob Hamblin and another Bro. Patterson and sister & wife of former were in same car. We made the 68 miles in two hours.

I called at Bp. Williams home in Holbrook and we administered to his wife. Attended the MIA meeting and the time was turned over to me and I occupied 50 minutes. Same subject with variation spoken upon at St. Johns 2 P.M. Administered to a Bro. Ellsworth after meeting. Took train at 11:50 P.M. for Barstow.

26 January 1925 • Monday

Arrived in Barstow at 2:30 W. time, where I had to wait until 10:00 P.M. for my train for home. We connect nicely with the Limited which I cannot ride with my annual pass. I commenced to read “Betty Zane” this morning, one of Zane Grey’s books of 300 pages.

27 January 1925 • Tuesday

On train

Am well

I finished reading “Betty Zane.” Arrived home [page break] at 7:50 P.M. I was met at the Station by Orin & family & Mother. Called on Lucena & Rega & Joel & family. Joel has been sick in bed for about a week. I administered to him.

28 January 1925 • Wednesday

Home.

Joel improved.

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual and in the evening after Circle meeting, Geo. & Edith, Mother & I went down to my daughter Nerva’s. While there we administered to her. She has been in bed for nearly two weeks with Neuritis. I spoke at the Temple meeting.

29 January 1925 • Thursday

I went to the Temple as usual. Attended Temple meeting and presided. Attended weekly Council from 10:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Did some sealing, desk work &c. Spent twelve hours in the Temple.

30 January 1925 • Friday

Attended to my duties at the Temple as usual.

Attended a meeting of the Board of directors of the H.J.G &c. Here I met Pres. Heber J. Grant and obtained his signature to recommends for Jas. Hogan, Samuel F. Smith, and Joseph Peterson and their wives. Pres. Grant informed me that the Presidency had increased the allowance of the brethren by $65.00. At a meeting with Jos. F. Smith & Jas Christensen we decided to [page break] increase the allowance of Brothers Wilson, Alston and Lyons by $10.00 each

31 January 1925 • Saturday

I spent part of the day at the Temple, attended to business at the Bank. Went down to my daughter Nerva’s home, 1952 So. Main and administered to her. She has been in bed two weeks with Neuritis. I spent some time on my books & accounts at home. Spent the evening at home.
