I spent most of the afternoon in B. of M. Committee meeting. The remainder of the day was spent in my office.

In the evening Alice & I attended [page break] an informal reception at the Bee Hive house, the opening for young girls; 36 are now ensconced there, the houses’ present capacity.

2 October 1920 • Saturday

Home.

All well. Fine day.

I spent the forenoon at my desk. Assisted by Elder J. E. Talmage, I blessed Bro Ezra C Robinson of Bountiful.

3 October 1920 • Sunday

With my son-in-law Clarence Silver and him family, my wife also Edna & Ray and I went in Clarence’s car to Tooele. I attended Tooele Ninth Ward Fast meeting. I bore testimony, and blessed & named my daughter Nerva’s baby Kenneth LaMar. Fasted until 4:30, gave offerings.

We left Tooele at 5:05 P.M. and arrived at 34th Ward meeting house in time for 6:30 meeting. I was the speaker and occupied 45 minutes— Subject Marriage. Mother remained at the meeting with me. After meeting we went with Bishop LeGrand Backman to his father’s home and we were brought home in auto. We then went up to Georges home and spent an hr. or two. LeGrand & Ina & Joel & Georgina were with us there. Edith in bed to prevent threatened miscarriage. Others all well. [page break]

4 October 1920 • Monday

At my office doing sub-committee work on the B. of M. table of contents, Jos. F. Smith associated.

My daughter-in-law, Edith having been taken suddenly worse during the day, Mother and I spent the evening there.

5 October 1920 • Tuesday

I attended quarterly meeting of the Twelve in the temple from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.

Attended a committee meeting in my office later.

Mother and I went with LeGrand down to his home and took supper and spent the evening. Some of our Dutch friends just arrived from Holland were present. Between five & six o’clock I visited the Conservatory of music in the Gardo House on invitation.

6 October 1920 • Wednesday

I attended a meeting of the Twelve, Mission Presidents and Seventies in the temple from 9 A.M. to 2:30 without intermission for luncheon. Attended Gen. Bd. of R. Classes at 3:15 and my Circle meeting at 6:30. I visited at Joels’ and at Sarah’s in the evening.

7 October 1920 • Thursday

I attended quarterly meeting of the Presidency & the Twelve in the temple from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. [page break]

In the evening I took Mother, Nerva & Geo. L. to the Theater.

8 October 1920 • Friday

I attended the two regular sessions of the General Conference and the general priesthood meeting in the evening. In the latter I spoke upon the subject of organizing in the stakes to do missionary work among outsiders.

9 October 1920 • Saturday

I attended the Conference meetings and was the first speaker in the morning. I occupied 20 minutes and was much assisted by the Lord so that I feel satisfied and happy. After meetings my son George took Mother, Estella Lee, our daughter Nerva and me for a ride. We went up above the stairs in Cottonwood Canyon.

10 October 1920 • Sunday

I had charge of the overflow meeting at the Assembly Hall in the morning, and was assisted by Nephi Jensen, Rey L. Pratt, Heber C. Iversen and John M. Knight. I spoke about five minutes in conclusion.

I also attended the afternoon meeting and the S. School Conference in the evening.

A splendid conference all the way through. I did not observe a dissenting vote in presenting the authorities. [page break]

I attended the 10:15 A.M. R.C. Con. meeting in Barratt Hall. After evening meeting at my home my sons Geo, LeGrand, & Orin Woodbury and I administered to my daughter Nina and her baby Dorothy.

11 October 1920 • Monday

At my office I met Emma Orme & daughter & Pres. Aloni Orme & wife at 9 A.M. when we administered to Sister Iva Orme.

I attended the Special Priesthood meeting at 10 A.M. and in the evening attended a reception tendered by the Presidency of the ch. to stake genealogical agents and others in the Bps. building.

Attended to some office work &c.

12 October 1920 • Tuesday

Assisted by Bro W. A. M. I administered to Sister Iris Flake Far for her hearing.

Sister Ethel Progley recently from London called at my office desiring to get a job as stenographer. I talked with Bro. Frank Penrose and he said to send her over to his office which I did. I assisted in setting apart a company of 40 missionaries, I set apart five of them.

I with J. F. S., worked on B. of Mormon Table of Contents for new edition. I having prepared a new and extended table of Contents, Bro Smith is checking it up with me. Worked in my office between. [page break]

In the evening, Mother & I attended a banquet given by Bp. & Sister Nibley to the Presidency & Twelve and others on the roof garden of Hotel Utah.

13 October 1920 • Wednesday

I spent the day in my office. Attended circle meeting in the evening. Sister Emily Richards (Wilfords widow) spent the night at our home.

14 October 1920 • Thursday

Attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 4 P.M.

At this meeting Elder David O. McKay was appointed to visit the Islands of the Pacific. Elder O. F. Whitney was appointed to visit through the Northern States Mission. Hugh J. Cannon’s name was mentioned for Superintendant of the L.D.S. Hospital. B. F. Grant to go to Hawaii for some months on business for the church, and to act as Pres Grants’ Aidecamp. B. H. Roberts’ political activity was considered, Pres Grant bringing it up.

I spent several hours in my office during the day and spent the evening at home. We had company.

15 October 1920 • Thursday

I spent the day at my office as usual. Several hours was spent in committee meetings. [page break]

16 October 1920 • Saturday

I spent the forenoon in my office. Most of the afternoon was spent in reading and studying. I went down town shopping with Mother and Ray about 5:30 and we went to the Casino theatre at 6:30.

17 October 1920 • Sunday

I attended the seven stake convention meetings in the forenoon, afternoon and evening

Between meetings I visited and administered to Pres. C. W. Penrose at his home 1145 So. 9th E. street. My son LeGrand assisted.

18 October 1920 • Monday

I spent the day at my office. Elder Talmage and I administered to a sister Brown of the 25th ward

Alice and I took supper with our daughter Mamie whose home is in Richards’ Ward. We returned home about 9 P.M.

19 October 1920 • Tuesday

It rained and snowed during the past nights and continued gloomy during the day.

I spent the forenoon in my office. Attended B of M. committee meeting. Attended a missionary meeting and set apart four elders to the Eastern States including my Nephew Roscoe Abner Grover. I gave him a V. to help him on [page break] his way. In this work I was assisted by fathers of three of the Elders. I went to the temple and with Joel & wife and his mother as proxies, I sealed 32 couples of the Dewy dead. I attended a Teachers’ Institute meeting in Barratt Hall in the evening.

20 October 1920 • Wednesday

Home.

More snow fell last night.

I attended meetings of the R.C. and Y.M.M. Gen. Boards and of my Circle. I also attended teachers institute in the evening. Attended to office work also.

21 October 1920 • Thursday

I attended weekly council meeting in the Temple from 10 A.M. to 4:40 P.M. and a meeting of the brethren with members of the City commission on the smoke question.

I accompanied mother, Orin & Nina to a movie in 27th Ward.

22 October 1920 • Friday

I spent the day in my office. Attended a B. of M. committee meeting. Took supper with my daughter Nina.

23 October 1920 • Saturday

I left Salt Lake at 8 A.M. on Bamburger line in company with Pres. Chas H. Hart for Hyrum Cache-Valley where we attended the Hyrum Stake Conference. We took train indicated by Card [page break] from the Stake President and were too late to attend the morning meeting at which 130 were in attendanc

At the afternoon meeting the attendance was 284. I was one of the speakers and occupied about 40 minutes with good liberty. Complimented the old presidency and appealed for support of the new &c.

I took dinner at a Bro. & Sis. Neilson’s and stayed over night with Pres. Jos. White in Paradise.

24 October 1920 • Sunday

Paradise.

Am well. Cold clear day.

I attended three public meetings and a Seventies’ meeting and spoke at each. At 10 A.M. meeting I spoke 33 minutes on the subject of the atonement and sacrament. Mental suffering caused those we love and the Lord by our wickedness & lack of love for them. At 2 P.M. meeting I occupied about 15 minutes at close on Bearing false witness & kindred evils, to be avoided. In the conjoint Mutual in the evening I occupied about 35 minutes on the original purposes of the M.I.A. The missionary work of the Church devolves upon the young men & women as does all other Church work. Prepare for same.

Pres Hart and I left Hyrum on 8:43 P.M. car which was about 30 minutes late. We connected, [page break] however with Bamburger cars in Ogden. We were about 12 min. late arriving in Salt Lake so had to walk home arriving there at 1:15 A.M.

25 October 1920 • Monday

Home.

All well. Beautiful day

I spent the forenoon at home Picked up odds & ends. Arranged for Alice and me to go to the temple tomorrow afternoon and be baptized. Wrote up my journal &c.

Spent the afternoon in my office as usual. Attended the Taft rally in Tabernacle in evening.

26 October 1920 • Tuesday

I worked at my office in the forenoon and in the afternoon attended a missionary meeting and set apart 4 missionaries to Gt. Britain. I presided at the meeting.

Mother and I went to the temple at 3 P.M. and were each baptized for 20 names of the Dewy family.

I bought the half interest of my sons George & LeGrand in our 120 A of Arizona land including 18 shares of water which is supposed to be sufficient to water 90 A. This gives me a 3/4th interest. Joel has 1/4 interest.

27 October 1920 • Wednesday

I worked at my office all day except while in [page break] meetings. Attended Mutual Bd. meeting and my Circle meeting In the evening Mother & I accompanied my son LeGrand & wife to the theatre, Empress.

28 October 1920 • Thursday

I attended regular council meeting from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M.

Attended funeral services for Horace G. Whitney held in the Assembly Hall at 1 P.M. Attended to office work. Attended to some business at City & County Building. Spent the evening at home. Ruby spent the evening with us. She is in her 3d year in nursing course at the L.D.S. Hospital

29 October 1920 • Friday

I attended to important business at my office, in Dr Talmage’s office and in Pres. Grants office. I got home late and went with Joel & family and Mother down to my son LeGrands’ where we had a family gathering and I took 11:30 P.M. train for St. Anthony, Idaho. It was raining in Salt Lake and snowing further north and a cold wind blowing.

30–31 October 1920 • Saturday–Sunday

I arrived in St. Anthony about 11:20 A.M. Spoke in the four public meetings of Saturday and Sunday and at the meeting of the Seventies at 4 P.M. Sunday. Subjects treated were, Two powers [page break] Hope of reward and fear of punishment incentives to action. Power to suffer mentally more than bodily. War in heaven which side were we on? Which side are we now on? Are we lending encouragement to the enemy

We would not knowingly inflict bodily harm upon parents or upon God but we would and do cause them mental suffering which may be worse, last longer and be harder to heal. Recited Poems, “A Mother to Her Son.” “Get Somebody Else” and told the story of the Mule and the ox.

I ordained and set apart the Bishopric of the Twin Groves Ward and one or two others.

I stayed over night at President Floyds’ home. Took train Sunday 5:30 for home. Got supper in Pocatello.
