Warm day.
I fasted, went down town early and had hair cut and attended to several items of business and at 10 A.M. attended the Quarterly Fast meeting of our council in temple from 10 until 3:15 P.M.
I received appointment with Pres. J. G. Kimball to Benson Stake Conference July 17 & 18th.
After meeting I took Pat. Hyrum G. Smith with me & went to the L.D.S. Hospittal and administered to my Sister Asenath.
We went from there to Dr Allens [p. 99] home and administered to Patriarch John Lowery aged 86 yrs. who is confined to his bed.
On arriving home I issued cks. in payment of bills, wrote up my journal &c.
The street paving was finished to-day between Q. & R. streets on 3rd Ave. and the finishing further East continues rapidly towards completion.

I spent the day until after 3 P.M. at home reading writing &c.
By special invitation of Pres. Jos. F. Smith my wife and I met with the temple hands & other invited guests in the Celestial room of the temple at 4:00 o’clock P.M. in meeting. Pres.s. Smith, Lund & Penrose and several of the workers spoke. After the meeting we adjourned to Bps. Bldg. & had a banquet. A very enjoyable time, especially the meeting.

I spent the day home reading, writing &c except a couple of hours spent in going down town and to the L.D.S. Hospittal where I administered to my sister Asenath. Condition not much changed

Mama & I attended temple fast meeting at 10:00 A.M. I offered the opening prayr.
George & Edith went out to Tooele last evening on their moter cycle and returned this even morning, leaving their children with us. They went up Emigration Canyon to-day noon where they are spending the Summer, George coming down mornings and returning evenings. Sarah, Mamie & Nina are also in the canyon and two at least of them have their beaux with them.
Nina returned from Logan yesterday where she spent two weeks with Lucena & feels much improved physically by reason of her visit. She was much in need of it.
Attended 27th ward sacrament meeting fasting. I spoke [p. 101] and bore testimony.
Attended 27th Conjoint M.I.A. meeting, Chas. Price the speaker. Alice & I went up to Joels after meeting and there met a Bro. Davis & a Sister Thomas.
Thunder & lightning furnished the fire works. Slight sprinkle of rain in evening.

Cool night last. I arose at 5 A.M. repaired hose, watered lawn &c. before breakfast.
All the family at home and Georgina & baby went up to our home in Emigration Canyon leaving Salt Lake at 9:30 A.M. Mama & I returned on train leaving Pine Crest at 9:30 P.M. Had a pleasant day up there. I read from “Common Law”.

I spent the day at home except that Alice & I spent about three hours towards evening walking down to 214 I street & back and at Aunt Seney
Asenath was brought from [p. 102] the hospittal where she had been for about five weeks & we were at her home when she came in the hospittal Ambulance and staid some time. I administered a blessing to her before leaving. Her condition is some what improved.
Some of the children came down from the canyon to-day.

The city graders & a Mr Ed. Canterbury whom I employed worked on front graded, leveled, planted lawn &c
I finished reading “The Common Law” by Robert W. Chambers 535 P. And commenced reading “Twenty-fourth of June” by Grace S. Richmond 404 pages.
I attended R. Class Gen. Bd. meeting & my Circle meeting. Spent two or three hours watering the lawn.

A nice long letter from LeGrand & Ina in Holland, baby Jane convalescing. I wrote LeGrand a four paged letter.
I worked out doors watering [p. 103] lawn, repairing porch &c 2½ hours in the morning.
Attended weekly council meeting in the temple. Bought a beauquet of flours Gladeolas to my Sister Asenath’s. I administered to her while there. Her condition continues about the same. By appointment I wrote Sam’l F. Smith, Pres. of Snowflake stake answering his of June 26th in relation to Woodruff people. Ariz. A busy afternoon at my desk.
My Sister Minerva spent the evening with us.

I called on my way down town at my Sister Asenaths home. I later called there with my electric fan which she seemed to appreciate. Called at my son’s office (Geo.).
Called on the First Presidency Met a Judge Mac [blank] at the office with Dr G. G. Richards By request of Pres Smith I accompanied the Dr & the Judge to the Bureau of Information and selected a number of books & presented to the Judge [p. 104] included among which were the Book of Mormon, D & Covenants, P. of G.P the Making of a State by Whitney, Gospel Philosophy by Talmage, tracts by B. H. Roberts & Nephi L. Morris, and interior temple views.

I had a badly swollen eye and remained home nursing it all day, read from “Twenty Fourth of June” by Grace Richmond, studied &c.
Pres. A. H. Lund phoned up and asked if I would talk in the Large Tabernacle tomorrow. I told him I am nursing a swollen & inflamed eye and did not know how it would be by tomorrow and he said under the circumstances for me to not think of it.

Hot night.
My eye quite swollen & inflamed. I went with my folks down to the 8th ward square in the morning and saw the Liberty bell on exibition on its way to San Francisco Fair. [p. 105] I finished reading “Twenty Fourth of June” by Grace S. Richmond a book of 404 pages clean & interesting. Alice & I called on my sister Asenath in the evening and I administered to her a blessing.

Ray stepped on something probably a thorn and lamed him so that before night he could not walk on it.
I spent the day home until 5:15 P.M. when I left home with wife and six of the children for Salt Air. Georgina, Joel & baby came on 6:30 P.M. train and we all went in bathing except Ruby & Wayne. Ray enjoyed it after the first wetting. We had good supper after the bath & got home about 11: P.M. I watered the lawn back & front & retired at 12:

Ray better.
I worked on the Lawn for two or three hours in the morning. Went down town and attended to some business. Called at my sister Asenath. [p. 106] administered to her. Repaired their garden hose &c.
My son George took dinner with us. I spent a happy evening home listening to the Ambrola music, playing it myself for about half our rolls. My ink has been so poor of late, I got some new ink and my fountain pen works naturally again.

Cooler today.
Ray’s foot about right again. Oliver has been troubled for years with lameness and was at one time in a plaster cast and a weight suspended from his foot over the bed stead foot by a cord as a result that leg is longer than the other and there is a condition of that hip not normal. He is frequently lame and scarcely ever without lameness. Has been bothered much of late. My son LeGrand has had similar trouble and been in a cast on two different occasions. His leg is still weak. Alice and Nine have both been bothered [p. 107] with an eczematic affliction and both have lingering trouble but not so bad as it has been. My sister Asenath is at her home but in a very bad way. The Dr. G G. Richards says she is gradually failing. I met him at her home this morning not by a pre-arrangement.
I went down town in the forenoon and attended to some business. On my way down I called at my sisters and repaired electric fan and saw my sister Asenath.
This morning Edna, Oliver, Estella, Ray and some of the Droubay children went up to our canyon home in Emigration for a two day’s outing. Ruby & Geo & family already there. A letter from my daughter Nerva says she & George & the children want to come in to the City next Friday and go up in the canyon and stay until Monday, an outing for the family. Nerva expects confinement about September as also does Lucena.
Mamie expects to mary [p. 108] about that time. Sarah has her Charlie & Nina her Orrin. Lucena & Rega are living in Logan & the latter is employed in the bank in Logan.
My son LeGrand & family are still in Holland, LeGrand being on his second mission to the Netherlands and this time president of the Netherlands mission. One baby, Jane, born to them in Holland makes them four children, all girls & all learning to talk Dutch.
I attended my Circle meeting & Ensign Stake Conference Priesthood meeting in the evening. Pres. S. B. Young by previous appointment was the speaker & I offered the Closing prayr.
With Elders Hardy & Chas. Price I called at my sister Asenaths about 8:45 P.M. to administer to her but all seemed to be quiet & settled for the night so I did not disturb them.

I attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Received appointment with [p. 109] Bp. O. P. Miller to Cassia July 24th & 25th. A special request made that who ever be sent be there to make a talk Sat. morning 24th as a part of the celebration & con.
I spent several hours reading writing &c. Received a nice long letter from my son LeGrand and wrote him in answer.

A letter from my daughter Nerva changing her plans. She and children expect to come in Sunday and stay a week. G. L. to come in about Friday & return with them.
I spent the forenoon at home studying &c On my way to train I stopped in my sister Asenath’s home with my son George & we administered to her. I took 2:20 P.M. train to Logan. Staid with my daughter Lucena & her husband over night. Had a good visit. J. G. Kimball followed on later train to Richmond where the Benson Stake Conference is to be held.

I took interurban Ry Car from Logan 8:08 A.M. to Richmond 40 min. ride.
Attended 10 A.M. Conference meeting. Attendance 132. Stake Population 6886. Speakers in order as follows;

4. Pres. J. G. Kimball
I occupied 35 minutes subject, Report of accomplishment and commendation. If we fully appreciated what the Lord has done for us we would love Him and delight in doing his will. Missionary work at home, encouraged officers and workers. Do not over work the people. Call more in to service & lighten the labors of those who are over worked. We advise against sins for it means sorrow & condemnation. We advise being good & doing good for it means peace, Joy & salvation. Took dinner with Pres Alma Merrill.
At 2 P.M. meeting attendance 324 Speakers were, Ida Smoot Dusen[p. 111]bury, Sister [blank] Chambers, myself. I occupied 30 min. subject. Primary work and encouraged parents to support same. I took 4 P.M. car for Logan and spent the night with Rega and Lucena. Pleasant visit.

I went back to Richmond and at 9:00 A.M. attended a Reliefsociety meeting.
Attended conference meeting 642 at 10:30 A.M. Sacrament administered. Speakers, Sisters Dusenbury, & Chambers & Pres. Kimball. Went with Pres. Hendricks in Auto to Lewiston to dinner.
At afternoon session attendance 786. Authorities sustained. The speakers were in order as fol.

2. Self, 3d Pres Kimball.
I occupied 45 minutes with good liberty. The Lord helped me. Subject. Efficiency of the German empire & the Mormon Church. Mormonism an organization of efficiency & liberty. Compliment to Jos. Smith by Vice Pres. of U.S. Thos. [blank] Marshall. [p. 112] Pres. Kimball & I left on 4 P.M. car to Logan, thence to Salt Lake. Had supper with Rega & Lucena. Arrived in Salt Lake at 11:00 P.M. Found my daughter Nerva & children at our home having come in from Tooele to-day.

All usually well at my home. My sister Asenath very low & fast failing. I spent the day at home up to about 4:00 P.M. I assisted Alice & Nerva & children on car at First South for Emigration Canyon and remained about two hours with my sister and then went to the canyon on 7:15 P.M. train & spent the night.
Administered to my sister Asenath while at her home.
20 July 1915 • Tuesday
Emigration Canyon.
I took 6:30 A.M. car for home. After watering the lawn, bathing & shaving &c I went down to my sister Asenaths and staid until about 12:45 P.M. Asenath continues to fail.
I have had my front fence painted & the tops of pickets gilded at a cost of $5.00 by Jos. M. White. [p. 113]
Later. I spent most of the day and night at my sister Asenath’s until her death came which was at 11:50 P.M. I administered to her three times during the day & night. She got relief while I was praying for her, May the Lord be praised. I returned to my home at 1:30 A.M. leaving Joel Grover with the girls and the undertakers embalming the body.

Attended weekly Council meeting brought forward a day on account of the Presidency going away to-morrow to California.
I received the appointment with Pres. Rulon S. Wells to Boise Stake Conference to be held at Boise, Idaho July 31 & Aug. 1, 1915
I did considerable phoning & writing of letters & cards notifying our people of the death & burial of my Sister Asenath. Services to be held in the 27th ward meeting house Friday 23rd at 2:00 P.M. Made three trips down town and two to Aunt Seney’s home.
Alice and some of the children came from the canyon in [p. 114] the afternoon and I took them down town in the evening and saw the electric parade of the Wizzard of the Wasatch. Attended Circle.

I spent most of the forenoon at home watering lawn, making sundry repairs &c. The workman are making cement steps &c at back, a $25.00 job. I wrote my son LeGrand.
Went out to Salt Air with Alice, Geo. & Edith, Joel & Georgina & had a bath. Called at Aunt Seney’s home on our way home.

Sun clouded most of the day.
Called at my sister’s home on my way down town in the morning. Attended to some business in arrangeing for funeral, attended to business down town.
Assisted with funeral arrangements, paul bearers, Speakers &c. Services held in 27th ward meeting house. Pres. Lyman offered the invocation, Langly [p. 115] Bailey of Nephi the benediction & Bro. McCune the dedication at the grave. The speakers were, Bp. Parks of Nephi, Wm. T. Atkin Wm G. Ferrill & Stephen L Richards Jr. I enjoyed the first & last talks.
Made ready to leave for Oakley, Idaho on midnight train. Went to Salt Air in early evening with my wife and other members of the family.
24 July 1915 • Saturday

I arrived at Oakley Ida. at 1:30 P.M. on same train were three sisters missionaries, Horne of the Reliefsociety & Florence Summerhayes of the Primary & Victoria Reed accompanying her. Bp. Miller went up a day ahead.
At afternoon conference the attendance was 277. The speakers were Mrs Alice Merrill Horne, Miss Victoria Reed, two local sisters & myself. I occupied 30 minutes Subjects Reliefsociety & Primary work. At 4:30 to 6:00 P.M. I was in attendance at a Primary officer’s meeting.
At the morning meeting the attendance was 366 [p. 116] Bp. O P Miller and a U of U. graduate a son of Pres. J. S. Smith were the speakers.
I should have said we were met at Ry Station & cared for. I staid with Pres. Wm T. Jack where Bp. Miller was staying also.
No meeting in the evening. I visited L. J. Robinson Jr. & family.

Oakley, Ida.

I attended Reliefsociety officers meeting from 9 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. At 10:30 Conference meeting the sacrament was administered. The speakers were as follows,
Pres. John L. Smith, Florence Summerhayes and myself. I occupied 30 min. Tithing. Non tithepayers too many. Too few missionaries out. Work necessary to salvation quoted from Matt. 7:21–end.
Between forenoon & afternoon meetings we set apart four Bishops and seven counselors to Bishops. I set apart Joseph R. Price 1st counselor to Bp. of Oakley Third ward. I ordained the four bishops as follows; Geo. H. Severe ordained a bishop & set apart to preside [p. 117] over Oakley second ward.
David R. Langlois ordained a bishop and set apart to preside over Burley First ward.
Isaac Gudmunsen ordained a bishop and set apart to preside over Burley Second Ward
Lawrence E. Harris ordained a bishop and set apart to preside over the Unity ward.
At afternoon meeting the authorities were sustained and the speakers were as follows;
Bp O. P. Miller, myself & Pres. Jack. I occupied about 35 minutes. Subject, Efficience & liberty in Mormonism. The greatest organization on earth so recognized by the world. The gospel is the Spirit & the carnal mind can not see its beauties &c.
We visitors took special train at 5:50 from Oakley to Burley. We were taken by Bp. Langlois to his home to supper, thence to train at 8:18 P.M. for home.

Arrived in Salt Lake on time 8:15 A.M. I did some odd chores, repairs &c, then shaved, bathed and wrote up my journal from notes [p. 118] Alice & I called on my nieces Asenath’s daughters. I spent the day reading, writing & studying.
27 July 1915 • Tuesday

All usually well.
I spent the day home until about 5:00 P.M. when I went down to 214 I st. and got Ed. Canterbury Cement Contractor & took him with me up to my Son LeGrand’s home on 10th Ave between I & J. sts. My Son George met us there and we planned cement step & walk work and Mr Canterbury bid on same to Tuttle Bros. who are looking after the rent of the place & rent collections. Rode with George on his motor cycle down home and from there went with Alice, Sarah & Ruby to the lake. Joel & Aunt Nerva joined us on the way before leaving Salt Lake. We had a lake bath supper & took in some of the side concessions. Arrived home about 11 P.M.

I went down town in forenoon and attended to some business. Issued checks in payment of bills & accounts &c.
Took 2:20 P.M. train in company with Pres. R.S. Wells for Boise, Ida.
31 July 1915 • Saturday
Boise, Ida.
Pleasant weather. We arrived at Boise in the early morning and kept our car until 8 A.M. when we were met by Pres. Heber Q. Hale with Auto and taken to Owyhee Hotel and took rooms. We [p. 120] then went to breakfast at a restaurant and back to hotel where we spent remainder of the forenoon.
Attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency, High Council & Bishops of four hours duration held in the Presidencies office in afternoon. Took supper with Pres. Hale & family. Sister Hale’s health poorly.
First Session of the Quarterly Stake Conference convened at 7:30 in the ward meeting house. The attendance was 91. The speakers were in order as follows; Pres. Heber Q Hale, Pres. C. Oscar Winkler, Pres. Condie of H Priests Quo., myself and Pres R. S. Wells.
I occupied 30 minutes. Recited “So He Died for his Faith” suggested by remarks of former speaker.
