Cardston.

Am well and happy.

Considerable snow fell during last night and to-day.

Conference of the Alberta Stake opened at 10 A.M. Attendance 232. I occupied about 40 min. on Lesser Priesthood. At 2 P.M. meeting the attendance was 423. I occupied about 40 min. on obedience and [page break] named some of the ordinances and duties necessary to Salvation and likened the lives we have to live to a garden. If the results are to be satisfactory no essential element must be omitted.

In the evening we attended a benefit concert. Wrote home.

2 November 1919 • Sunday

Cardston.

Am well.

I went into the tabernacle before 9 A.M. and did not get out until after 4:30 P.M., fasting.

The 9 A.M. meeting was a R. Class Convention of officers & workers, 74 were present. I took the part allotted to the General Board member. At 10:30 meeting there were 582 in attendance. I took the Religion Class Convention topic, The co-relation of the Religion Classes with the “Home Night.” occupying about 35 minutes. At the close of this meeting I attended a Seventies meeting and was one of the speakers. All the time was taken between meetings.

At the 2 P.M. meeting the attendance was 612. I occupied about 30 min. on the subject of [“]Atheism and infidelity.” Though we are shut out from the presence of the Lord and our recollections taken from us, sufficient evidence is to be seen to leave us without excuse for not believing in Him. I broke my fast at Bro. Coombs home where I had a good supper [page break] and a good visit.

At the Conjoined Mutual meeting in the evening the attendance was 496. I was one of the seven speakers & advised the young people that they could not afford to do wrong or sin either in secret or openly, that at least 100 fold would have to be paid in sorrow, regrets &c. Urged all to avail themselves of the opportunities afforded them to go to school to the M.I.A. organization. Match brains rather than dancing ability. &c.

A good conference was had. Much talent for instrumental and vocal music is in evidence. The meetings were conspicuous for the number and quality of the musical selections rendered. The work of this stake is in good hands and is prospering.

3 November 1919 • Monday.

Pres. Edwd. J.’s Home. Alberta Canada.

Am well.

Considerable snow and the temperature during the night reached 10° F below zero.

In the forenoon Pres. Wood, Bp. D. A. Smith and I looked through the temple which is a beautiful and costly structure. The outlay to the present is about $460,000.00 When finished and furnished it will have cost more than a half million dollars.

I called on Alice’s half sister Mamie Steed while downtown. Her husband has been in the [page break] Lethbridge hospital for about three weeks, having undergone an operation for appendicitis.

I spent the afternoon writing up my journal for the past three days writing letters &c. Wrote to mother.

Commenced to read “Black Beauty”

In the evening I attended a lecture by Dr J. M. Tanner, Subj. Shantung. After the lecture we attended the gymnasium where the business men and others were taking their training and later saw some boxing and wrestling on the mat. The snow drifts preclude the use of autos & Pres. Wood has no other means of conyeyance at hand so our going down town and returning is done on foot 1½ miles round trip and in cold weather is great.

4 November 1919 • Tuesday

Cardston.

I am well and happy. Sleighing good, weather cold. I remained at Pres. Woods’ home all day. Finished reading “Black Beauty”, read the papers &c.

In the evening I attended the M.I.A. meeting and spoke to those present following Major Brown who spoke on the League of Nations Covenant. I showed how most of the revelations received by Joseph Smith were in answer to anxious inquiry. Under such conditions the mind is in con[page break]dition to receive the impressions of the Spirit. While the war was waging, mens minds were in a condition to receive inspiration as to the best methods to prevent a repitition of the war. The League Covenant is the results. Like the Constitution of the U. States I believe it to be inspired and if so God will see it through and make it effective.

After mutual meeting, we went to a Chataque a musical by two ladies and a gentleman. Nothing to brag about. Election day in S.L.C.
