1 July 1921 • Friday

I attended to my duties at the temple as usual. [11 words redacted relating to a temple ordinance]. This being the temple closing day I addressed the morning meeting. The temple is to be closed until Aug. 15th during which time the temple will be thoroughly cleaned.

2 July 1921 • Saturday

I had an interview with President Grant at his office in the morning and from there went to the temple. At the gate at 10:40 A.M., the gatekeeper Bro. Kirkham informed me that Bro. Wm. H. Dixon, one of our janitors had just been taken out of the temple dead, he having fallen from a ladder and had his neck broken. I learned the particulars later from the other janitors, Henry Gray Robinson, Hyrum H. Taylor and Francis [Evogervougge?] who witnessed the fall.

In the evening Mother and I went up to Pine Crest in Emigration Canyon to our home. LeGrand took us up. Edna, Estella & Ray had gone up earlier with Charles T. Murray [page break] and James Pingree, escorts of our girls.

We stayed at our cabin. Clarence and Mamie went up also and stayed at the Hotel. I did some work on the home putting on screen cloth &c

3 July 1921 • Sunday

Emigration Canyon.

All well.

Attended Sunday School in the lobby or porch of the Inn. I spoke about 30 minutes. Subject; Honor parents: Had good liberty. At the school the program for the 4th celebration was read and I was announced as the orator of the occasion. I spent some time preparing a speech.

4 July 1921 • Monday

Emigration.

I gave the oration at the 4th celebration and before & after worked on the house putting on new screen cloth. We returned to the City in the evening.

5 July 1921 • Tuesday

I spent a part of the day at the temple. Attended and was one of the speakers at the Wm H. Dixon funeral services.

Mother & I took to the American in the evening, my sons George, LeGrand and Rega & their wives. After the show we called at our home and we men folks by request blessed Edith M. She expects to go to the hospital tomorrow for an operation next day, Womb trouble. [page break]

6 July 1921 • Wednesday

I went to the temple as usual.

Gave direction to the cleaning work &c. I answered a letter received from [blank] of Ashurst, Arizona stating terms on which he could purchase my land in Ashurst.

In the evening, I took Mother, Ruby & Estella to the Empress.

7 July 1921 • Thursday

No meeting of the Presidency and the Twelve to-day. At our last meeting an adjournment was taken for two weeks.

I spent considerable time looking over the temple with a view to deciding what painting, cleaning &c should be done this summer. Some of my family had gone to Saltair and I took 7 P.M. train and joined them.

8 July 1921 • Friday

I went to the temple as usual and gave direction to the improvements there to be made. I worked on a paper to be read or spoken before the teachers convention in Provo on the 13th inst. on the subject of Genealogy & temple work.

I spent the evening at home.

9 July 1921 • Saturday

I went to the temple as usual and found much of importance to engage my attention and time during the day.

10 July 1921 • Sunday

My son LeGrand & I having [page break] been asked by Pres. Clawson to attend the Dutch Conference, we left Salt Lake at 9 A.M. in his auto and arrived in Ogden before 10:30. I spoke at both meetings. Returning to Salt Lake, I spoke in Sugar House on Missionary work, the investigator, milk first & meat later &c. In Ogden I spoke on History Repeats itself. We are expected to learn from the experiences of others both individuals and peoples.

11 July 1921 • Monday

I left home on 7 A.M. car for my office, thence to the temple. Later met the Presidency & the Twelve at the office of the First Presidency. where we were in session from 9:30 to 1:30 oclock.

I left the temple about 6 P.M. and rode down to my daughter Mamies in Sugar House with my son LeGrand where mother was visiting and took supper after which Clarence & Mamie brought us home in their car.

12 July 1921 • Tuesday

Alice and I accompanied President Clawson & wife up to [“]Pine Crest Inn”, in Emigration Canyon where we spent the day at the compliments of the owner of the Inn, the Church.

13 July 1921 • Wednesday

I attended a D.&C Committee meeting, attended to some business of the temple directing the cleaning.

Went to Provo and gave a talk before the Church School & Seminary Presidents & Principles on the Subject of Genealogy [page break] and temple work after which I answered a number of questions on the same subject. Mother & I called on Edith who had been operated upon a week ago and this day was removed to her home.

14 July 1921 • Thursday

I attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. Was busy all the rest of the day from 7:30 A.M. to late in the evening over temple cleaning & repairs.

The plasterers commenced to remove the plaster from the walls in the Telestial room, which was falling off the walls. These walls were painted with decorations. We found that the mortar or plaster had rotted so that it was thought best to take all the plaster off the four walls of that room. It was decided in a meeting in the Presidency’s office to have the work done and to have the paintings reproduced. on canvass and have the canvass pasted on the walls. At this meeting there were present on my invitation Prests A W. Ivins & Rudger Clawson and Elders Jos. F. Smith, Hyrum G. Smith, the artist J Leo Fairbanks and myself.

Pres Penrose was in another room and when invited to come in he said he did not desire to be bothered with it. Pres. Grant is in the East and the work must be prosecuted at once.

Mother & I took 6:30 P.M. train to SaltAir beach, had bath & supper with Joel. [page break]

15 July 1921 • Friday

I spent the day as usual at the temple directing the work of cleaning, painting and repairing &c.

16 July 1921 • Saturday

I was at the temple as usual.

Had consultations with President A. W. Ivins in absence of President Grant & Pres. Penrose, with J. E. Talmage about D&C Committee work. Also with Jos. Christensen & Pres. Ivins about paid employees of the Salt Lake Temple.

We could spare a number of our paid employees but we do not know where to place them.

I spent some time reading Pioneer history. Mother and I called and saw Edith who is home from the hospital & improving nicely.

17 July 1921 • Sunday

Home.

Warm weather.

I attended 27th ward S. School and addressed the school. I attended the meeting in the Large Tabernacle and offered the benediction. Pres A. W. Ivins was the speaker. I attended 27th Ward meeting in the evening when Pres. Wallace of the Ensign Stake was the Speaker.

Later in the evening and before meeting we had much good company. LeGrand, Rega and their families, Joel & his family, Murray, families,

Jas. Pingree, Droubay’s girls &c.

We served cream & cake to them. [page break] Joel & Georgina took Rega & Lucena home in Hyland Park about 10 P.M. and Alice & I rode down with them. Retired at midnight.

18 July 1921 • Monday

I put in a full half day cutting lawn, trenching the edges, leveling, patching &c.

I spent some time at the temple.

Attended to business at my office in Church Offices Building.

This day, I received official notice of my appointment as a director of the Inland Railway Co. I signed qualifying paper before Notary and returned to Co. by mail. I spent the evening at home, all the others were away.

19 July 1921 • Tuesday

I divided my time between the temple and my office.

Spent the evening at home and put in two or three hours on the lawn.

20 July 1921 • Wednesday

I attended committee meeting of D.&C., Visited Scott W. Anderson at his home and Adolph Murz at the hospital with Elder J. E. Talmage & J. G. Kimball and we prayed for and administered to them. I was busy at the temple deciding important questions pertaining to the work of repairs, cleaning, painting &c.

In the evening I filled an appointment at the 17th Ward. Addressed the genealogical workers [page break] and others, the public having been invited. Subject, Genealogical & temple work. Answered a number of questions after the close of my talk of 30 minutes.

President Nephi L. Morris, who was present, requested me to let him have the notes from which I made my speech to typewrite and for publication.

21 July 1921 • Thursday

I attended to business down town. Arranged my transportation by stage to Duchesne for tomorrow. Decided important matters at the temple.

Attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to about 2:30 P.M.

Did some work at my office, &c. Made ready to leave in the morning for Duchesne.

22 July 1921 • Friday

I went to Provo by train and was met there by two men Giles & Chris Anderson and with a lady named Westim, went via. Heber to Duchesne arriving there about 7 P.M. I was entertained at the home of Geo. V. Billings of the Stake Presidency.

23 July 1921 • Saturday

Duchesne.

Am well.

Warm, dry weather

I accompanied Pres. Billings to Boneta 15 miles distant where Stake Conference was held. I attended two conference meetings and a High Council meeting and spoke at each. 50 min in forenoon [page break] Subject. my own pioneer experience Anticipation of something better in the future sustains us through trial here.

2:30 Sub. Vitalization of the work and workers, 45 min.

I slept at Elder Meikleson’s.

24 July 1921 • Sunday

I spoke at the 10:30 A.M. meeting occupying 45 minutes. Told Pioneer story, Lorenzo D Young’ wife & babe & Indian.

Honor parents &c. Recited, Got [“]Which Shall it Be”, & [“]A Mother to her Son”.

At 2 P.M. I occupied about 50 min. Subject. Pioneers.

After meeting I ordained and set apart a number of the brethren.

I returned to Duchesne and spoke at the evening meeting there, Subject

Gospel Defined.

25 July 1921 • Monday

I went from Duchesne to Salt Lake via Helper arriving at 9 P.M. My son George & Mother met me at depot.

26 July 1921 • Tuesday

I attended committee meeting of 3 hrs. duration reading and considering Chapter or Section headings in the revision of the D.&C. Attended to the necessary supervision of the work in renovating the temple. Made preparations for the marriage reception of our daughter Edna to take place tomorrow.

27 July 1921 • Wednesday

I performed the marriage ceremony for my daughter Edna Moselle and her husband at noon in the temple. [page break] My sons George & LeGrand were the witnesses. Others were present. Freakfast was served by LeGrand & Ina after the wedding at which Mother & I and Geo & Joel & their wives were present.

The remainder of the day was a busy one and the reception engaged my attention until a late hour.

Every thing passed off nicely without a jar.

28 July 1921 • Thursday

I gave direction to the work of renovating the temple. Attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 2 P.M.

Worked at my desk for several hours at the temple. I dug dandelions from our lawn in the early evening until dark, watered the lawn as usual. Mother, Sarah and I spent a short time at Ediths. She is able to sit up some.

29 July 1921 • Friday

I attended D.&C. Committee meeting from 9 to 12 o’clock with other members of the Twelve where we read the revelations which do not appear in the present edition of the Doctrine & Covenants, about twenty in number with the view of recommending to the First Presidency certain of them to be included in the edition we are just now preparing.

I spent considerable time in the temple as usual.

Mother, Sarah and I rode out to Saltair with LeGrand, Ina & George [page break] leaving Salt Lake about 6:30 P.M. We had supper with Joel and wife family out there and had a lake bath. Returned home after mid night, but we had a nice time.

30 July 1921 • Saturday

I took 8 A.M. train for Provo accompanied by Bro. B. S. Young where we attended the Utah Stake Conference. I spoke at all meetings Subjects treated, Tithing, word of wisdom, prayrs and general duties of saints should be attended to and in season.

This will be a guarantee against loss of faith & standing with Church which would be calamatous. Afternoon topic, “Thy Will be done.” I occupied about 40 min. at each meeting.

I returned home in the evening.

31 July 1921 • Sunday

I took 8:00 train for Provo where I attended Conference and spoke at both forenoon and afternoon meetings. In the forenoon I spoke upon the subject of Honor thy Father & thy mother. Recited, “Which Shall it be,” and, “A Mother to Her Son.”

In the afternoon I treated the subject of Faith & works and applied the principle to L.D. Saints as well as to outsiders. We should do as well as we know. Yesterday and today I ordained officers, three Bishops and five counselors. I arrived home before 6:10 P.M. and attended the 27th ward Sacrament meeting & heard my son George, the speaker. He [page break] made a fine address and bore a fervent testimony.

We had an electric storm in the evening and our light went off so that we had to resort to candles to get & eat Supper &c.
