This is a very warm day. I am fasting but am well and happy. Arrangements have been made to have the dedicatory services of the Carbon Stake [page break] Tabernacle dedicated which has been twelve years in course of construction and completion and has cost, with interest of about $5,000.00 about $91,000.00 The Church by the Trustee in Trust has given $42,250.00. Price people have given 40,750.00 and the outside wards $8,000.00. The building is to be viewed and used conjointly by the Carbon and Stake and the Price ward.
At this mornings meeting the attendance was 760. I occupied about 35 minutes. Subject. Oneness or to be united. Harmful effects of bearing false witness &c. At 2 P.M. meeting, attendance 860. I occupied 10 in speaking and 15 min delivering dedicatory prayer. Had good liberty. I set apart a number of officers. At the evening Conjoint MIA meeting I occupied about 40 minutes. Subject Marriage. Good liberty. While in Price I stayed at the home of Pres. Horsley.
2 July 1923 • Monday
I left Price on Stubb train at 5:45 A.M. for Salt Lake City. Arrived in Salt Lake at 11:40. Went home & had a bath, changed of clothes and went to the Temple where I attended a meeting of Temple workers, 244 present. I spoke for about 20 minutes and turned the meeting open for remarks or testimony or questions. There was no derth of interest and testimony and we continued until about 4:30 P.M. A good meeting. In the evening my son George and wife took Mother, Nina and me for an auto ride.
Geo. L. Tate, being in town on business called on us in the evening and he took the 11:50 P.M. train for his home in Inkom, Idaho.
3 July 1923 • Tuesday
Warm weather. My palm beech suit is none too cool. I stayed home in the forenoon and cut the lawn, issued checks to pay bills &c. In the afternoon I went to the Temple and answered some letters & did other desk work. In the evening I took the following to the Paramount Show: Mother, Nina, Clarence and Mamie.

Mother and I went up Lamb’s Canyon to the Lake leaving home at 5 A.M. with Geo, Rega & Clarence and their families. George & family and Mother & I came home arriving soon after 6 P.M. After cleaning up we drove down through Liberty Park and up town and I took them to the American.
5 July 1923 • Thursday
I went to the Temple and after consulting with the architects & contractor about work & improvements being made about the temple, worked at my desk. After disposing of current busi[page break]ness and correspondence, I commenced reading manuscript of “An Introduction of The Study of The Book of Mormon” by J. M. Sjodahl with a view to determining whether it would be suitable for a text book for the quorums of priesthood of the Church. Request came from Pres. Clawson.
My daughter in law Ina had a mis hap this early morning and she was taken to the hospital. She nearly flowed to death. I went up about 1 P.M. and assisted by my son LeGrand we administered to her and I remained with her until about 7:30 P.M. She began to feel better right after the administration and rested comfortably most of the afternoon and made improvement. While LeGrand made a trip town home I remained with Ina fauning and otherwise waiting on her. While LeGrand was on his way back to the hospital he was run into and knocked from his car, a large touring car belonging to Alex Taylor. The car was badly broken up. LeGrand is unhurt. The other party admitted carelessness and the responsibility for the accident. We have much to be thankful for today.

Ina is still improving. I went to the Temple before 8 A.M. Arranged to marry Bro. Clif[page break]ford C. Clive and Miss Mabel Snell Monday July 9th at 10 A.M. In the evening I attended the Ensign Stake Priesthood meeting in the 18th ward Chapel and spoke briefly upon the Subject of Service.

I went to the Temple as usual in the morning, where I spent the day.
8 July 1923 • Sunday
I was one of the speakers at the 10 A.M. session in the Assembly Hall of Ensign Stake Conference and at the afternoon session in the Large Tabernacle I was the principal speaker, occupying about 45 minutes on the Subject of Faith alone not all that is necessary to Salvation. Pres. Knight occupied 15 minutes closing. At the 11th ward evening meeting a young man spoke about 5 or 10 minutes and I occupied about 55 minutes on the Subject of marriage, celibacy, divorcements and rearing families. Multiply and replenish the earth. I was blessed with good liberty of thought and impression in each instance. At the morning session I spoke l upon ward teaching & tithing. Pay monthly. A full day and much satisfaction. [page break]

I went to the Temple as usual. Married two couples during the day, Clifford C. Cline & wife and [blank] Horsley & Price. Attended to correspondence &c. Saturday I set apart Bro. Ernest E. Nielson second counselor to Bp. Robert E. Jones of Hunter Ward after ordaining him a High Priest. Sunday between meetings I went to the L.D.S. Hospital with my wife and son George and we met LeGrand there and administered to Ina who had received a set back. Mother attended all the meetings with me the Sunday.
10 July 1923 • Tuesday
I worked on my lawn in the forenoon and in the afternoon was at the temple until after six P.M. I took some work home and attended to it in the evening.
11 July 1923 • Wednesday
I went to the Temple before 8:00 A.M. Sealed a couple at about 10 A.M. A Brother Stone & Sister Jensen. The latter leaves this afternoon for a mission. I attended to some business with the First Presidency. Was busy at the Temple until 6:00 P.M. In the evening Nina took Mother & me to the Hospital to see Ian who is recovering nicely and then we went to the Pan. Theater. Joels sons Brent & Joel Jr. have the [page break] mumps in real form & fever.
12 July 1923 • Thursday
Joel’s baby has developed the mumps. The other two boys are getting better. I went to the temple as usual, where I found plenty to do. We are making extensive improvements about the Temple and we are thoroughly renovating it within. I wrote to Geo. L. & Nerva and to Edna. Mother and I went out to Saltair on 4:30 train where the City’s old folks were celebrating. We bathed in the Lake and went with Joel to the Ships Cafe and had supper with him.

I went to the Temple in the forenoon and attended to some desk work &c. I went home early and did some work in preparation for my trip to Heber tomorrow &c.
14 July 1923 • Saturday
Mother & I went down town together on same car. She took 7 A.M. train for Cornish where Ruby lives and I took 7 A.M. Auto Stage for Heber where I attended the Wasatch Stake Conference We reached Heber about 9:45 so that I was in good time for the opening of the conference. [page break]
The population of the Wasatch Stake is 3937. The attendance was:
Sat 10 A.M. 212 = 5%
[Sat] 2 P.M. 285 = 7[%]
Sun 10 A.M. 751 = 19[%]
[Sun] 2 P.M. 714 = 18[%]
I spoke at all meetings.
At morning meeting Saturday I occupied 30 minutes on the subject of the Godhead and Jesus Christ as the Savior &c. Had good liberty. These remarks were called forth by remarks of previous speakers. At 2 P.M. meeting I occupied, Love, Sacrifice & Service.
15 July 1923 • Sunday
Heber, Utah
I spoke at 10 A.M. meeting for 40 min. Subject: Bearing False witness and kindred evils.
At 2 P.M. meeting I occupied 65 min with good liberty upon the subject of marriage and its various phases. Quoted “Which shall it be”
I left Heber at 4:30 by Auto stage and arrived in Salt Lake at 7:30 P.M.
I wrote up my journal &c.
16 July 1923 • Monday
I took 7 A.M. train for Cornish, arrived there at 10:51 A.M. Spent a pleasant eight hours with my wife who is visiting there and with my daughter Ruby [page break] and for a couple of hours with Ruby’s husband and took 7:06 P.M. train for home. It was after 12 o’clock when I retired.

I arose at 5:30 A.M. Watered the lawn and went to the Temple as usual. Attended to accumulated correspondence &c. Married Woodruff Gwyn and Margaret Minette Child at 10 A.M. I wrote to my daughter Nerva at Inkom. I also wrote to Edna at Eugene, Oregon.
18 July 1923 • Wednesday
I arose at 4:45 A.M. Cut the lawn watered it, &c. Went to the Temple where I did desk work as usual. Attended committee meeting at 2 P.M., Bps. office considering floor coverings &c. At 3 P.M. attended directors meeting of U.I.V. Co.
Met the 6:10 and 10:40 train for Mother. She arrived on latter from Cornish.
19 July 1923 • Thursday
Solemnized a marriage of Harvey C. Carlisle and Emily Stevenson McDonald at 9 A.M. Both having had their endowments. Attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 10 A.M. to about 3:30 P.M. including lunch in the temple. Attended to Temple Correspondence &c. Inspected the work [page break] being done outside the temple with the architect and passed on several important matters. After supper Mother & I and Estella went with Nina & her children in her auto down to Sugar house and called on Ina who this morning came home from the L.D.S. Hospital where she has been for two weeks following miscarriage. We also called on our daughter Mamie & family. I spend about an hour each night before retiring in sprinkling the lawn which is in good condition.

All fairly well. Weather warm. I went to the temple as usual in the morning. At 1:30 I performed a marriage ceremony in the Temple for Nathan Ford Clark and Andrea Montess Bringhall. Wrote to my daughter Edna. Planted lawn grass. Spent the evening at home.
21 July 1923 • Saturday
Very Warm. I went to the Temple as usual where I was kept busy by consultation and desk work until after 1 P.M. Then I went home and studied Gospel subjects. I am scheduled to speak tomorrow evening in the Wasatch ward and Thursday evening in Pleasant Green ward. I received no appointment this week-end. [page break]

A warm day.
I spent the forenoon at home reading and studying. Attended the 2 P.M. Tabernacle meeting at which Governor Maybe was the speaker. His talk was a combination of Patriotic & Religious character which I very much enjoyed. I offered the invocation and Elder Richard R. Lyman offered the benediction. Pres. Hugh J. Cannon presided as this was a part of the Liberty Stake conference.
I filled an appointment at Wasatch ward in the evening occupying 60 min. Subject. Marriage vs. Celibacy; Temple m. vs. Civil M; Divorce & birth Control. Had good liberty & my remarks seemed to be appreciated. After meeting I went with Geo., Joel, their wives & Mother down to Sugar House to see Ina who is convalescing from her recent illness.
23 July 1923 • Monday
I went to the Temple as usual and found busy work at my desk and in consultation over the work we are having done in and about the temple. I left for home about 3:30 P.M. I sought an interview with the First Presidency but learned that the [page break] Church offices are closed to-day as well as tomorrow.
I cut and watered the lawn &c.
Bro. & Sis. Ford of Centerville sent us a box of beautiful black cherries. I wrote them an acknowledgement & thanks.
24 July 1923 • Tuesday
Very warm day, some clouds, a slight shower in some places.
This is the 76th anniversary of the entrance of the Pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley. This important event is being featured in a celebration which is on. Alice & I went with Nina and her children in her car up the mouth of Emigration Canyon and saw the events there representing the entrance of the Pioneers into the valley &c.
In writing up my journal, I do not undertake to write the history of the state or nation, of the Church or its stakes & wards. I merely record some of the things I do and how my time is spent.
Later Nina drove us up to the Lagoon where we spent about 40 minutes. Returning to Salt Lake Mother & I took the 9:30 P.M. train to Saltair where we spent about an hour. We put in a full day but were not over tired having had an auto to go about in. [page break]

I went to the Temple as usual. About 5 p.m. I called at the President’s office and had a talk with Pres. A. W. Ivins.
In the evening I took Mother and Nina to the Pantages.
26 July 1923 • Thursday
I attended the weekly Council meeting in the Temple. Was otherwise occupied at the Temple all day until 4 P.M. I went down to Sugar House and had dinner with my daughter Mamie and others of my family and back to Depot where I took 6:20 P.M. train to Bello. I was met there by Pres. Geo. A Little of Oquirrh Stake and taken to Pleasant Green where I addressed the Stake Officers on the Subject of Amusements, then & now. “Thy Will be Done” and Card playing. Occupied 45 minutes. I was brought back in Auto to 33 So. & State & from there came home on street car.
27 July 1923 • Friday
I met Bros. Davis & Call at the temple at 10 A.M. A Miss Clark a genealogist intertained me for about 60 min with her advocasy of her system of name keeping &c. Arranged to have a temple worker’s excursion to Saltair Aug 16th. Took 5:15 P.M. train to Echo and from there went by Auto to Coalville arriving [page break] about 8:40 P.M. I stayed with Pres. Thos. L. Allen. Others, Auxiliary Workers, stayed at other homes.

Coalville.
Attended Summit Stake Conference and Convention and took part in them. Attended two sessions of H. Council also. Sun. 10 A.M. I occupied 30 min. Sub. Parent’s responsibility to make LD. Saints of their children. In the evening I attended a social in the H. S. Gym.
29 July 1923 • Sunday
Coalville.
Attended the meetings of Conference and in the afternoon. I occupied about 60 minutes. Subject: God, his personality, Jos. Smith, a marvelous work & Sacrifice as an impelling power.
After meeting I came home with my son George and Mother, Josephine & Franklin arriving at 6:30. Mother & I took supper with Geo. & Edith, where Mother & I spent the evening. I sprinkled the lawn before going to bed and this is my daily custom when home.

I went to the Temple at 9 A.M. where I spent a busy day until 6:00 P.M., inspecting and giving direction to the work which is going on within and outside the Temple, working at my desk &c. [page break]

I cut the lawn before going to the Temple this morning. The weather is cooler this morning. Showers last night. Had a busy day at the Temple.
