We saw a few deer at short range this morning. We drove from Alton to the Brice’s Canyon a distance of 44.7 miles. When we reached Hill’s Dale I sent a message of Condolence to My Sister-in law Louise Stayner Richards & family. When we reached Hatch’s Ranch, four miles from Brices, the steering rod broke and that was about 9 A.M. [page break] My son George took the broken part and went back to Panguitch and got another fixture. He rode to Panguitch on a truck, walked 6 miles returning and rode the rest of the distance 52 miles there & returning. Arrived with car repaired at 7:30. We are thankful the break did not occur while on a digway, or on the desert or while we were driving fast. May the Lord be praised for our preservation. Like David to Saul, the Lord showed clearly how he had preserved us. While George was gone to Panguitch the rest of us rode up to camp at the Canyon 4 miles with the Mail Carrier a Mr. Seeley where we spent the day. Here we met again Pres. A. W. Ivins and the members of the party about 14 in number including Mr. Gray, Mr. Day & a number of other prominent Ry. officials.

Brices canyon.

All well.

Fine day

We left for home at 4 A.M. and missing our road we went too far East but thinking we would strike the main road to Tropic without losing much time we continued on after we made the discovery that we were on the wrong road. We were brought to a sudden stop by observing a great gulch about 20 feet wide and probably 15 feet deep just before going over into it. It was not yet daylight and we narrowly escaped [page break] what might have proved death to all or a part of us. Again we had occasion to praise the Lord and acknowledge the hand of Providence in our favor.

About 2 miles south of Marysvale our car stopped on us with a broken bearing wire connection. Bp. Johnson a garageman happened along and hauled us in to the Vale where the repairs were made. Finally we arrived home at 11:30 P.M. and after taking a cold bath I retired to my restful bed.

We saw the Cedar Breaks, Zions Canyon, the Grand Canyon and Brices Canyon and visited St. George. I shall not attempt to describe these scenes of natures workings. The last day we drove 268 miles or more.
