1 January 1924 • Tuesday

This year opens with my conditions & circumstances auspicious & propicious, the outlook being favorable for a good year. My family folks are all fairly well and well situated with respect to work, financial and Spiritual. The past year has been one of the best of my life. My daughter Sarah buried her baby boy, a beautiful child, in January. Since then four grand sons have been born to us. My finances have been good in the main. My earnings, interest &c have never before netted me so much, my tithing is the largest ever. I am exceedingly happy. I spent a part of the day at the temple and a part of it at home where we had company. My daughters Nerva and Mamie with their husbands & children Spent the evening at home also.

2 January 1924 • Wednesday

I was the speaker at the temple meeting. Attended to the regular sealings in the temple for the living. Canvassed the furniture stores of the City selecting dining room chairs, 55 are needed for the Temple Dining room. Attended prayer circle meeting in the evening. Attended to many little details of my Temple work and duties. [page break]

3 January 1924 • Thursday

I presided at the morning Temple meeting as usual. Mother and I stood for twenty-eight couples in sealing. Alvin F. Smith performed the ceremonies. I attended to the sealing of the living.

4 January 1924 • Friday

I attended to my duties at the temple as usual until 8 P.M. when Sister Richards & I went to the Tabernacle concert, the “Ucranion Chorus.”

5 January 1924 • Saturday

I was called to Presidency’s office to consult over a matter which pertained to temple work about which Pres Wood of Alberta temple had written them.

I attended to desk work at the Temple until the middle of the afternoon when I accompanied my wife to Sugar House to the home of her Sister Estella Lee, by invitation. I wrote a letter to our son Oliver who is doing missionary work in Hanover, Germany.

6 January 1924 • Sunday

I remained home in the forenoon studying for Priesthood Convention work. Attended Sacrament meeting in 27th ward in the afternoon and evening meeting also. Offered prayer in afternoon meeting Bro. & Sis. Woodbury, Orins parents and Bro & Sis. Duran, recently from Germany [page break] took dinner with us at 5 P.M. & spent the evening with us except that the men went with me to meeting. I have begun to send the daily Tribune or News to Oliver, in Germany.

7 January 1924 • Monday

I took 7:30 car for my work at the Temple where I was kept busy until about 6 P.M. My work today has been principally at my desk. Have had some people come to my room to interview me & have written letter &c &c. Happy in my work and in the enjoyment of good health.

8 January 1924 • Tuesday

I spent a busy day at the Temple from about 9 A.M. to between 5 & 6 P.M. principally on Priesthood Convention preparation.

Alice & I attended the Tabernacle Concert in the evening. The Little Symphony band from Kansas.

9 January 1924 • Wednesday

I attended Temple meeting at 8:30 and Quarterly meeting of the Twelve from 9:30 to about 4:30 except about 1½ hrs while I sealed seventeen couples & took lunch. I spent the evening at home working upon Convention papers.

10 January 1924 • Thursday

Attended Temple meeting and from 10 am to 3:30 I was with the Presidency & Twelve in weekly council meeting. [page break] I spent the remaining time of the afternoon and evening until 11 P.M. preparing for Priesthood Convention work.

Alice had a bad night last with eczema and a pain in her leg. She kept her bed all day and is somewhat relieved.

11 January 1924 • Friday

Alice had a better night last night than the night before, but she has a bad case of eczema. We called Dr. Gill Richards who said that it was the worst case of eczema he had ever seen. He called D.R. Rich, a specialist in Skin Diseases. Dr. Rich ordered medicines from Drugstore & gave instructions how to treat the disease. She felt much better after first treatment.

I attended to my duties at the Temple until noon. Attended the funeral services of Henry Spencer held in the 21st ward at 1 P.M.

Attended sessions of Liberty Stake Conference & Priesthood Convention as follows: 4:30 Meeting for 1 hr with the Stake Presidency & clerk. Took supper together as guests of Counselor Michelson at Roberts Hotel Café. Attended meeting of the Liberty Stake Presidency, H. Council, Bishops and counselors in the upper room of the Bureau of Information building at 6:45 to 7:45 and general Priesthood meeting in the Assembly Hall in the later evening 8: P.M. to 9:45 P.M. [page break] I spoke at the last two meetings on topics which had been assigned, and at first meeting went over the work of the Stake & conditions &c with the Stake Presidency.

12 January 1924 • Saturday

I went to the temple where I answered some correspondence and made some preparation on Conference – Convention work. Alice is very much better today. I visited a couple of hours with other members of the family at my daughter Nervas home in the evening.

13 January 1924 • Sunday

I was one of the speakers in the Assembly Hall at the 10: A.M. meeting of the Liberty Stake Conference. Attended the 2 P.M. meeting in the Tabernacle and on my suggestion the following brethren spoke: Pres. Fred Michelsen, Jos. S. Peery, Jos. H. Grant, Chas. C. Richards and Pres. Hugh J. Cannon. In the evening I attended the 9th war[d] meeting and spoke 40 minutes on the subject of Marriage, divorce, &c. Pres. Hugh J. Cannon took me in his car and returned me to my home after meeting.

14 January 1924 • Monday

Alice’s condition is bad. She has a bad case of eczema.

I attended to my duties at the temple as usual, and wrote to Oliver and to Edna. Left the [page break] Temple at 6 P.M. Spent the evening after supper working on my Income Tax report.

15 January 1924 • Tuesday

I spent most of the forenoon at my desk at home. Went to the Temple and attended to my duties there.

Assisted in setting apart a company of missionaries, attended a Directors meeting of the U.I.V Co. [24 words redacted relating to a temple ceremony] I worked at the Temple until about 6 P.M. Spent the evening at home.

16 January 1924 • Wednesday

I presided at the morning meeting at the Temple as usual Attended to the living sealings, 13 couples and some children. Assisted at the veil.

Bro. Jos F. Smith was speaker at the Temple meeting. After the meeting we had [first, middle, and last names redacted] before us. He was asked to remain away until his case is fully investigated when I am to notify him. I set apart David Robert Roberts and Winifred Hannah Ashworth Latham Temple workers. Attended Circle meeting in the evening & gave some instructions on subject of tithing. Left the Temple for home about 8 o’clock P.M. [page break]

17 January 1924 • Thursday

Presided at the Temple 8:30 A.M. meeting as usual. Attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. Attended to sealings and other Temple work; had a number of conversations on temple work, &c. We are having a rushing time at the temple to-day and evening. It is impossible to accommodate all who come for endowments.

I spent the later part of the evening at home.

18 January 1924 • Friday

I attended to my temple work as usual and in the evening made ready to leave for Beaver. My son George and I attended a wrestling match in the theatre where Mike Yokel defeated Alley of Kansas and Ira Dern of Utah and Thye of Portland wrestled. Thye got a fall at 11:25 and I left for the train for Milford which left Salt Lake at 11:55 P.M.

19 January 1924 • Saturday

I reached Milford at 8:45, an hour 15 min. late. I was met at the train by Bp. Bird of Milford and taken to Beaver in his Ford with three other passengers We made the 32 miles in about one hour ten minutes. A cold day but I did not suffer.

Attended and spoke at the 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. meetings of the Priesthood Convention and at 7:30 P.M. met with the Stake [page break] Presidency for about an hour & a half going over matters of interest pertaining to the stake & the duties of this Presidency. I stayed at the home of Pres. McGregor.

20 January 1924 • Sunday

Beaver. Am well.

Very cold night last.

Attended 10 A.M. Convention-Conference meeting 361 or 10% of Stake population present. I occupied about 45 minutes on the topic assigned, viz.: Responsibility of the Priesthood to the Church and the World. At the afternoon meeting I occupied 45 minutes Subject, The Gospel a garden, Weeds of the garden, Becoming false witness, slander &c. Had excellent liberty. I rode to Milford with Bp. Bird & others and took supper with the Bishop. Attended evening meeting 94 present and occupied 60 min. Subject, Marriage vs. Celibacy, Divorce, evil & causes & bearing & rearing children I got train at 12 o’clock and arrived in Salt Lake about 6:30 A.M ordained several people. See below.

21 January 1924 • Monday

I went home and got my breakfast, made my toilet &c and went to the Temple as usual. Among the ordinations I performed yesterday was that of George Marshall whom I ordained a Patriarch and set him apart to labor in the Beaver Stake.

I spent the evening at home retiring early.

Mother is getting better slowly of her eczema. [page break]

22 January 1924 • Tuesday

Mother seems to be getting better of her eczema, slowly. It has been a bad case.

I went to the temple as usual. Set apart six of a company of missionaries.

I interviewed the First Presidency at their office and obtained three rulings in as many cases which I had taken under advisement. I spent the evening at home.

23 January 1924 • Wednesday

I attended to my duties at the temple as usual. Attended my prayer circle meeting in evening. Attended a directors meeting of the H. J. Grant & Co. Sealed about 20 couples living and a number of children to parents.

24 January 1924 • Thursday

I attended weekly council meeting from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Attended to Temple duties before and after meeting. This day and night Mother had an awful time with her eczema. At midnight she had a nervous chill and she suffered much.

25 January 1924 • Friday

I attended to my duties in the Temple in the morning and evening and spent the middle of the day at home with my sick wife who is confined to her bed with eczema. I also [page break] finished preparing my income tax returns. Mother had a better day than she spent yesterday.

26 January 1924 • Saturday

Mother had a better night and is feeling better this morning. I went to the Temple as usual.

Placed a satchel full of our Church magazines on the table of the children’s rest room. Attended to important work at my desk.

A Mr. Olson and a Mr. Lillywhite of the Continental Life Ins. Co. the former of St. Louis called to see me about settlement of my maturing policy of $500. Arranged to meet my son George & me together next week he also having a maturing policy. Mine for $5000. His for $1000. Mine matures next Mar 31st, His a year later.

I wrote a letter to Oliver and one to Edna & posted them. Spent the evening at home.

27 January 1924 • Sunday

Having no appointment, I attended the 10 A.M. meeting of the Pioneer Stake Conference in the Stake Hall and by request, spoke 15 minutes in conclusion on the Responsibility of the Priesthood to the Church and to the world. Attended Tabernacle meeting at 2 P.M. Stephen L. Richards and Levi E. Young were the speakers. Their appointment was Pioneer Stake Conf. [page break] I spent the evening at home with my wife who is ill while the other members of the family went to church.

28 January 1924 • Monday

Mother had a good night and she is feeling better this morning.

I went to the Temple as usual. I had an interview with Presidents Grant & Penrose. Elder Jos. F. Smith, Jas. Christensen and I had Sister [first, middle, and last names redacted] before us & learned that she married into Poligamy in 1909. We decided to excuse her from assisting us at the Temple.

Bro. Smith & I visited one of our Temple workers, Sister Robert S. Campball at her home and administered to her.

I spent two hours with my son Geo. and agents of the Continental Life Olson and Lilly White considering terms Olson, and Lillywhite of settlement of our policies, my last payment of 20 having been made.

Spent the evening at home with my wife who is ill.

29 January 1924 • Tuesday

I went to the Temple as usual where I spent the day.

Alice is improving slowly. I have been writing up a brief history of what has been accomplished and changes made at the Temple since I became the President. This for our Temple Historical Record. Attended a meeting of the Stock [page break] holders of the H. J G. & Co. Spent the evening at home.

30 January 1924 • Wednesday

Sister Richards mending slowly I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual.

I renewed a $1200. note at the Bank for 3 mo. @ 7%. Attended to my duties at the Temple and my Circle meeting in the evening.

31 January 1924 • Thursday

Attended weekly Council meeting from 10: A.M. to 1: P.M. Attended to my duties at the Temple as usual.

After a thorough examination of the plan proposed by the Continental Life Ins. Co. of settlement of my policy I decline acceptance of it and will take what I can get as provided by the policy itself.

At our Council Meeting to-day I received the appointment to the Maricopa Stake Conference to be held Sat. & Sund. Feb. 9 & 10. This carries with it the Appointment to St. Joseph Stake Feb. 16,17th.

In the evening I visited at Bros. [illegible] & Andreson where with other invited guests, I took supper and spent the evening.
