Liverpool.
All at Durham House, Liverpool, are well.
The war of the European Nations still goes on.
I spent the day at my desk as usual, answering correspondence &c. My son & I walked out after Supper. The evening was spent in a social at Durham House. Pound day. I recited “He Worried about it” and on enchur [encore] recided “He died for his faith.[”]

I spent the day at my desk as usual. This day the Council of the Twelve meet in quarterly meeting in the temple.
3 January 1917 • Wednesday

All well.
I received a letter from my wife dated Dec. 13th and written at Logan. I answered this letter with four pages. Worked at my desk all day and in the evening I was the speaker at the meeting 15 present. I occupied about 50 min. Subject. Temple (our bodies) Difilement. Power of thought in the building of character. Had good liberty, may the Lord be praised [p. 32]

I worked all day at my desk examining and commenting on reports from Netherland, Scandinavian and So. African missions. Correspondence &c.
I received from the shop my shoes half soled and healed for which I paid 7/6, rubber heels and “Dri-ped” soles sewed on.
5 January 1917 • Friday

Am well.
My son George and I walked down town after breakfast and spent about two hours in the library Museum, our first visit to this museum. Admission is free.
I attended M.I.A. meeting in the evening. Did work at my desk between times.
6 January 1917 • Saturday

I am feeling usually well. I have had some trouble getting the sleep I require of late. I have a slight touch of Insomnia I think.
Five months ago to-day in company with my son George, [p. 33] his wife and their two children, I took leave of loved ones at home and started upon my mission to England.
This day I worked on mission reports &c steadily all day.
Geo, Edith, the children and I took a walk in the evening.

I attended S.S. prayr meeting, afternoon sacramental meeting, and evening meeting. I fasted until after the afternoon meeting & gave my offering. Wrote Home.

I worked at my desk all day and attended reliefsociety meeting in the meeting.
Three elders from Blackburn Liverpool Conference headquarters and made their stay with us for a few days while they were trying to establish a lodge at Birkenhead Elders Condie, Mason & Danielson.

I spent the day at home as usual working at my desk. Considering correspondence, reports from conferences and from the missions, Elder’s labor reports; Local priesthood reports; Lady Missionary reports; Reliefsociety reports &c.

I worked at my desk as usual all day. Attended the evening meeting. Elders Condie, Mason and Danielson were the speakers. I wrote a letter to my daughter Nerva.

Pres. Parley M. Condie returned to Blackburn this A.M. and Elders Mason and Danielson continued their search for a lodge at Birkenhead.

I spent the day at my desk and the evening in M.I.A. meetings.

Am well.
I had the best night’s sleep last night, I think, that I have had for some time and enjoy a good spirit this morning. Enjoyed the S. School session. from 11 AM to 12:30 P.M.
I presided at the evening meeting as none of the Branch Presidency. The meeting was opened and closed by prayr from the Sisters and three of the Sisters were speakers. One brother occupied about 20 min. and I made a few closing remarks.

I received letters from Mother and LeGrand and answered them. Worked at my desk all day.
Attended and spoke at the evening meeting. Subject. The strait way and our deviations. The proneness of men to not live up to the light they have received. Quoted Emerson. What I most need. Also told the story of the Dandelines & repentance.

I worked at my desk all day and evening except that I went down town and back on business.
Received letters from my daughters Sarah, Nina and Estella and in the evening answered them. I also received a nice letter from Bro. J. E. Talmage, also from Bp. Miller, from Pres. Monson of the E. States & others.

Made ready to leave for Leicester to attend a district conference. Took 12:30 P.M. train arriving at Leicester 118 miles distance at 4:15 P.M. I was met at the Station by Pres. Hooper of the Nottingham Conference and accompanied to the lodge of the Elders 192 Meldrum Road where I made headquarters. A Mr Smith & family proprietors. The four elders of the Conference staid at same lodge.

Cold day.
I attended S. School at 10:30 A.M. and was one of the Speakers occupying about 20 min. Hold on to the iron rod and lead others to come take hold. Compared the experiences of Saul (Paul) and Alma the Second. At 2:30 P.M. meeting I was the only speaker occupying 70 min. Subject Apostasy. 40 in attendance, 9 non members. Good success. At 6:30 P.M. I was the principal Speaker occupying 70 minutes Subject Establishment of Gods Kingdom. Dan. 2: Basis. What men say of the church now. [p. 38]
The attendance was 60 of whom 19 were adult non members.
A glorious time, may the Lord be praised.

I took 9:45 Midland train arriving in Liverpool at 2:15 P.M.
I worked at my desk the after part of the day and the evening.

All day at my desk except that I went down town and took my Auto Strop razor to Kelleys for repairs. Walked down.
Attended evening service and offered the opening prayr. After meeting I read letters from Mother, Ruby, Edna & Ray and answered same by one two paged letter to my wife. Retired at a quarter of 12 o’clock.

I worked at my desk all day Wrote to my wife laying before her my plans for her coming to England.
Attended M.I.A. meeting. Bro. Thompson made opening talk on War as predicted by the scriptures. After meeting at the request of brother McKnight Son of Sister Ravenscroft I gave him a blessing assisted by several of the brethren. He expects to leave for the front within a few days.

All well. Attended School and meeting in Liverpool. I was the speaker in the evening and occupied 60 or 70 minutes. Subject. Apostasy. [p. 40]
While eating my breakfast this A.M. my tooth in upper jaw, Sup. maxilary chipped off on the inside similar to the one of the other side corresponding which broke last Sept 1st in the same way.

I went down town and had a tooth filled by Dr. Roberts 71 Mt. Pleasant St. and made appointment to go again in the afternoon and Have the one filled at 4 P.M. Pd. 12/6 I walked for an hour or longer trying to find a store where I could buy red leds for my pencil but failed to buy any or find any the right size. I bought a Standard Dictionary 1916 Edition for 2/6.

Weather somewhat moderated
Attended to correspondence and other business of the desk in the forenoon, and in the afternoon I went to Blackburn 35 miles north of Liverpool & headquarters of the Liverpool Conference to see Pres. Parley M. Condie. Found that be had gone to Accrington to attend M.I.A. meeting. I took car & went on to Accrington and [p. 41] found Pres. Condie who returned with me to Blackburn. I discussed with Pres. Condie the proposition of his transfer to the New Castle Conference to succeed Pres. Jonathan Hunt.
He expressed himself as feeling reconciled to the change. Certain difficult problems developing in the New Castle Conference and having to release Pres Hunt seemed to make a drastic measure justifiable. I returned to Liverpool arriving at Ry Station 10:41 P.M. A necessary and profitable trip.

I spent the day at home at my desk as usual. Much business of Importance attended to.
In the evening I attended the regular meeting. After the meeting I—assisted by others administered to Sister Beddow. From the Relief funds consented to the loan of three pounds £3.0-0. to Sister Armitage to pay her rent
I sat up late reading the papers. A letter received from my son LeGrand. Retired after mid night.
