1 August 1924 • Friday
I went to the Temple as usual where I spent the day mostly at my desk. I attended to some business at the President’s office. On behalf of my sister Minerva, I spoke to M. D. Wells about a $400 note he has been owing her for nine years. I told him that if he would pay $10.00 each month until the obligation is paid she and her child would be quieted, but if he would not do that, some of them may give him some unpleasantness. He received the message in almost silence and made no promise except that he would see what he could do.
Spent the evening at home.
2 August 1924 • Saturday
I went to the Temple as usual and was busy there most all day. Took supper with my daughter Sarah and spent the evening at her home with her folks & Mother. Nina brought us home and we called at the home of my son George & saw Jack & Ruby who arrived in the early evening on their way to the Grand Canyon.
3 August 1924 • Sunday
I attended the three meetings of Pioneer Stake all held in the [page break] Pioneer Stake Hall and I addressed all the meetings, the last, upon the subject of marriage and divorce. Other subjects, Thy will be done, Sacrifice & Service, touched lightly.
I set apart the Counselors in the Stake Presidency, Datus E. Hammond and Jer. A. Hancock. I also set apart several Counselors to Bishops & two H. Counselors.
After the meetings I visited an hour with Ruby and Jack.
4 August 1924 • Monday
I went to the Temple as usual. We had about three or four sq. yds. of plaster removed from the west wall of the Garden room this morning. It was coming loose from the wall & falling off. We have the painters at work also the Upholster, and the cleaners &c. In the evening I spoke at the Pioneer Stake Conference Priesthood Meeting on the Subject of Temple work and qualifications necessary for members to receive recommends. The people should be taught in advance with an effort to have them worthy and the worthy ones should be urged to come to the Temple for marriage.
It is displeasing to the Lord when members of his church who are accounted worthy and have the opportunity of going to the Temple, get married by the civil law outside the temple. It is displeasing to [page break] him that we are unworthy and such should repent. A man may lose wife and children through neglect of going to the Temple for marriage. I cited examples.
After meeting I went to the show with my wife and daughters, Lucena & Nerva.
5 August 1924 • Tuesday

Later we met with Bro Wallace of the Stake Presidency and the Bishops of the 11th & 27th wards. On my suggestion, it was decided to make to the First Presidency & the Twelve a recommendation to make two new wards from the 11th and 27th wards.

That is the day of the Richards Family reunion at Liberty Park, Saturday, but the President said he thought I could be spared from the reunion. Later it was decided to not make the trip.
8 August 1924 • Friday
This is the day of our Temple Worker’s annual outing to be held at Pinecrest Inn, in Emigration Canyon. I was at the East gate of the Temple Block at 7:30 A.M. and left for the Canyon in the last car at about 11:15 o’clock. Mother and I and Estella Lee rode with my son George & his family.
We served refreshments by ticket to 422 people. This is the best means of knowing how many were there. Pres. Grant & wife and son & [page break] daughter Bennett were there and several of the General Authorities. We had an excellent program of our own making and a good time was had generally. Our car was the last bearing Temple workers to leave the Inn for home and we left there about 8:30 P.M. after having supper at the Inn. I have had considerable anxiety about this outing but am wonderfully pleased that it went off so well. All seemed to enjoy it immensely.
9 August 1924 • Saturday
I awoke about 5 A.M. with a severe pain in my stomach, which I think to be indigestion. I took treatment and went to the Temple and performed a marriage for a Bro Jeppson and Sister [blank]. Attended to other work there and being in distress came home and here got some relief and sleep, but I did not feel able to go out to the Richards’ family reunion held in the Liberty park.
I had a good night’s sleep & rest free from pain.
10 August 1924 • Sunday
I addressed the High Priests’ meeting at the 18th ward-house in the forenoon. Mother, Estella and I, by invitation went down to my daughter Nerva’s to dinner, this being her 40 birth day anniversary. We returned home in time for meeting but I was [page break] in such distress I remained home and nursed myself. I felt well until a short time after dinner, where my trouble which I call indigestion began again.
Yesterday was Lucena’s birth day anniversary. My Son George took her & Rega and Mother and me out for a ride last night.
I had quite an uncomfortable night but arose as usual in the morning.
11 August 1924 • Monday
I arose early as usual, shaved bathed and dressed to go to the Temple, but, I got worse instead of better, so did not leave the house and the afternoon I spent in bed. I had a bad day. About 3:00 P.M. Mother began giving me a treatment of hot pack applications and I got some relief. I took Sulhapatica in the morning and later took two teaspoon fulls of salt and later a dose of soda which caused vomiting. In the evening Mother & others went to a show.

Co. We wound up the business of the latter, selling our interests amounting to about $80,000. to the Inland Salt Co. in liquidation of all our indebtedness. My note of $1800. was returned to me. Attended to much business during the day and attended my Circle meeting in the evening, there being but five of us present the Circle adjourned for one week. Having had no Circles for about 6 weeks the Members evidently have not kept in remembrance the time of recommencing.
Nerva & Jack returned from their visit to the Grand Canyon.

I was met by a Brother McDonald who took me in his car to Santa Monica, thence to Ocean Park where I put up at Merriott Jones Hotel, arriving there at 11:30 A.M. After getting dinner I walked out on the water front. Rode full length of the skirt line to Santa Monica north and Venice South. Many people in their bathing suits all along the line. They were mostly lounging in the sunshine & sand. Some were in the water. I met Pres. Geo. W. McCune & Counselor Dr. Harding at 4:00 o’clock and we went in auto to Los Angeles where we continued our meeting of the Presidency which had been in progress while on the auto. I did most of the speaking at all these meetings and enjoyed it. When I returned to Ocean Park, I went to the Drug Store and bought a bottle of Granular Effervescent Sodium Phosphate on Dr. Harding’s recommendation as a mild cathartic and took a medium dose. Within an hour I was suffering with gas pains in my stomach. This continued all night so that I got practically no sleep.
<Sunday 17>1
I called Dr. Harding about 5:30 A.M. and he gave me some Pain relieving liquid medicine. I took an enema and the Doctor injected some thing into my arm so that I soon got relief and slept. I was unfit for service this day but was free from pain all day and slept most of the time, keeping my bed all day. The Doctor called to see me at noon and again at night but I needed no further treatment. Roscoe Grover called & saw me about 9:00 P.M.

At the Conclusion of the meeting Elder Jos. F. Smith, Joseph Christenson and I interviewed [first and middle initials and last name redacted] who presented a temple [page break] recommend. We found that his past conduct was such that we could not admit him to the Temple and we so informed him. I also informed him that he might count himself fortunate in having his standing in the Church as people are being cut off for just such causes. I later reported to Pres. Grant what had been done. Our action seemed to be approved by him.
