1 June 1921 • Wednesday

I spent the day in the temple as usual. I sealed about thirty couples and a number of children to parents. This is a banner day for endowment work in the Salt Lake Temple. Alice & I went through with the evening session the first to be held in this temple. President Grant, Bro R R. Lyman Patriarch Hyrum G. Smith and other leading men were present. It was to do work for the Brigham Young family and to celebrate the 120th anniversry of President Brigham Young’s birth. We commenced taking the record at 6 P.M. and began to come through the veil at 10:30 P.M.

As President of the Salt Lake Temple I am petitioned by many leading men to institute a regular night session one or two nights a week. The Presidency have deferred action. [page break]

2 June 1921 • Thursday

Attended temple services & my circle meeting. Sealed six or seven couples and attended to other temple duties. Spent the evening at home. Nina and family were with us, the first time she has been out since the baby was born.

3 June 1921 • Friday

I went to the temple before 8 A.M. Attended to the ordinance work for the living, [4 words redacted relating to a temple ordinance] and set apart John Brown and John Cairns workers in the temple.

I took evening train for Bancroft, Ida.

4 June 1921 • Saturday

I arrived in Bancroft at 8 A.M. Was met at station by Fred Christensen and taken to his home where I ate & slept.

Attend morning and afternoon meetings of conference and spoke at each. Subjects. The Godhead and instructions to officers. Saw part of a ball game. I ordained 8 Seventies

5 June 1921 • Sunday

Bancroft. I attended and spoke at two conference meetings— Subj. Honor parents, earthly & heavenly. Tithing, read sentiments of non member religionists from Browns Book. Temple work. Prepare the people to come worthily to the temple.

Attended a Seventies meeting and ordained 3 more Seventies.

I took 4:42 P.M. train to Incom Ida. [page break] I attended Incom Conjoint M.I.A. meeting and addressed the meeting (about 100) on Honor mother & Father and community spirit & work. My experiences.

The joy of anticipation.

6 June 1921 • Monday

Incom, Ida.

All well.

I rode out with Geo. L. & Nerva and called on some of their friends.

Nerva and her sons George T. & Kenneth LaMar accompanied me to Salt Lake. We took train at 5 P.M. and arrived in S.L. City at 10:40 P.M. George F. Jr & Mother were at the station to meet us.

7 June 1921 • Tuesday

I made the talk at the temple meeting this morning. Subjects administrations to the sick and baptisms for the dead.

Assisted in setting apart a company of missionaries, attended a D&C Committee meeting. In the evening George took Mother & me, my daughter Nerva, Lucena & children for an auto ride.

8 June 1921 • Wednesday

All well.

Warm weather

I went to the temple as usual at 7:30 from home.

I sealed 55 couples and some children to parents. An unusually larg number of marriages.

I left the temple at 7:15 P.M. A busy day. I delight in being busy and in the [page break] accomplishment of necessary things Spent the evening at home and had company, Alices three sisters, Maria, Sarah and Estella and my daughters, Nerva, Sarah & Nina.

9 June 1921 • Thursday

I went to the temple as usual. Attended the meeting of the Council from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. except while otherwise engaged with the ordinance work of the temple. About 15 couples sealed and children to parents &c.

Sister Richards & I attended the Jr. High School graduation exercises, our daughter Estella being one of the graduates 8:30 P.M.

10 June 1921 • Friday

I attended to regular temple duties, a goodly number of sealings. Attended and offered the opening prayer at the Y.M. & Y.L. M.I.A. Conference in the Assembly Hall. Attended the evening exercises at the same place in the evening. Alice went through the temple with Grace Richards. Bro. Winder hurt her feelings at the veil.

11 June 1921 • Saturday

I attended 8 A.M. and 10 A.M. Conference meetings. The afternoon was spent by the conference people at Liberty Park. I accompanied other members of the family in a trip up Cottonwood Canyon. The canyon is beautiful and the raging torrent [page break] rushing over the boulders made an awe inspiring sight.

As we emerged from the canyon we observed the column of dense smoke rising from the oil tank of the Refining Co. which proved to be the most destructive fire with which Salt Lake has yet been visited, resulting in a loss of about $600,000. and the loss of several lives and above 40 injured according to news paper reports.

12 June 1921 • Sunday

Warm

I attended Mutual Conference meetings as follows; 8:30 & 10:30 A.M. and 2 & 7:30 P.M. Between the afternoon and evening meetings Alice & I rode down to Claud Richards’ with him and visited about an hour in Hyland Park. We then visited my daughter Lucena & family and took lunch with them.

Rega & I returned to the tabernacle and Mother was later brought home by Clarence & Mamie. A full day.

13 June 1921 • Monday

Warm

I arose at 5:30 and went through with my morning’s work as fol: blacked my shoes, took physical culture exercises, had a cold water bath, shaved & dressed before 7 A.M.

Went to the temple as usual. At the temple gate I met a Mr Geo. Cooley who lives in San Bernadino

He says he was born near the old [page break] tithing office building in Dec. 1853. His father & mother apostatized in 56 with ten other families, he says. Worked at my desk until nearly 7 P.M. corrolating instructions, decisions, authorizations &c for my guidance.

In the evening I worked until about 11 P.M. preparing genealogical data of my family for the Robinson records by request of Maria Clark.

I had complimentary tickets to the Concert oritorio and gave them to my daughter Nerva and Alice’s sister Sarah who attended.

14 June 1921 • Tuesday

Warm day

All well

I spent the day in the temple excep that I attended to a little business outside. Bought a $30.00 cedar chest for Edna’s birth day present.

Made assignments for the Twelve & Seventy for June 25 & 26.

Spent the evening at home.

15 June 1921 • Wednesday

Home.

Attended to temple duties as usual.

I sealed about forty 57 couples and some families of children to parents and finished the sealing at 5:40 P.M. Spent the evening at home

16 June 1921 • Thursday

Attended Council meeting from 10 until 1 o’clock.

Attended to temple duties as usual. Alice & I called on our son LeGrand & family. Bro. Curtis came in and we administered to LeGrand. He has what seems to be a touch of the flue. We [page break] also called on Clarence & Mamie who went with us to Grace Richards’ wedding reception and later Clarence & Mamie brought us home in their auto. I should have left at 3:45 P.M. today for Roosevelt, and I left home this morning for having that thought in view but we had word that the water is high in the Duschane river and we sent a telegram saying that no visitors may be expected.

17 June 1921 • Friday

I was at the temple as usual before 8 A.M. and did not leave until after 4 P.M.

Alice and I attended Bro. & Sis. M. J. Ballards’ 25th wedding reception in the evening.

18 June 1921 • Saturday

Accompanied by Bp. John Wells, I left Salt Lake on 8 A.M. Ry train and arrived in Logan at 12 oclock. We were met by Pres. Jos. Cardon of Cash Stake and taken to the hotel for dinner. I took supper with my brother Fred and family and spent the night there.

In the afternoon I was one of the speakers of the conference and spoke with much liberty occupying 40 minutes. Subject. Our responsibility Love, sacrifice, service, following the example of the Father and the Son. Missionary work abroad, the home ministry, Genealogy and temple work and individual re[page break]ligious duties such as obeying the ordinances & keeping the commandments.

At the Stake priesthood meeting I spoke briefly on encouraging the boys by giving them something to do.

19 June 1921 • Sunday

Logan.

Am well

Cool & clowdy.

I went with members of the Stake Presidency at 9 A.M. and visited the Hyde Park new meeting house which cost $31,000.00 and is ready for dedication.

At the 10 A.M. Conference meeting I spoke 50 minutes with good liberty on missionary work among the non members, naming obstacles in the way of outsiders embracting the gospel. Did not mention how that the gospel should like mathematics be studied in a systematic way beginning with fundimental principl including preexistance. Had excellent help from the Lord.

Ate dinner at the home of President Lindquist who gave me a box of flowers to bring home.

At the afternoon session I occupied 50 minutes. Subject Tithing Good liberty. Read items from Browns’ book. In the evening I spoke briefly to the young 1009 being present. Subject. Come to the temple for marriage, but come worthily. At 4 P.M. attended a meeting of Bishops & counselors & addressed them briefly.

The Logan stake presidency this day organized the Logan 12th ward and [page break] I ordained and set apart the Bishopric, James W. Linford Bp.; Estus N. Hammond 1st & Wm Athay second counselor respectively. I received pressing invitation from Pres. Peterson of the U.A.C. and Dr Harris who has been appointed to succeed Geo. Brimhall in presiding over the B.Y.U of Provo, to visit their school and address their students.

Elder Wells & I took the 8:25 train for home and arrived in Salt Lake at 12:30 midnight. Found all things favorable. I visited Logan temple Sat.

20 June 1921 • Monday

All well

Beautiful day.

I went to the temple as usual in the morning. Wrote to my Sister Alice, my brother Fred, to Payne & Greenhalgh of Ariz., to G W Lindquist of Logan, to Uncle Arnold D Miller. I took the 5 P.M. train to Salt Air where I spent the evening with members of my family, my first visit there this season though my son Joel is manager.

21 June 1921 • Tuesday

I went to the temple as usual and attended to temple duties.

In the afternoon I went down to the home of Pres. C. W. Penrose with Bp. Davis & we administered to him. He was in his bed all the time but had been sitting up some.

I spent the evening at home.

22 June 1921 • Wednesday

I phoned President Heber J. Grant at 7:30 A.M. inviting him to speak at our temple 9 A.M. [page break] meeting to-day as we were expecting a goodly number of young people to be present. He accepted the invitation but at about 8:50 he phoned me that he had dropped off to sleep and had awakened too late to get to the temple, so I made the talk. The Assembly room was filled and many people stood in the hall and isles. We had above sixty couples sealed, married, during the day. We are conducting four companies through the temple daily i.e. three days each week. I this day sealed all the couples except about four.

I obtained the ear of Presidents Heber J. Grant and Anthony W. Ivins and presented the following matters to them which they approved:

First, the changing of the place for administering to the sick from the garden room of the temple to the assembly room of the temple annex

Second, in listing names of children for sealing to parents whether they be living or dead, they are to be listed in the order of their birth and sealed in that order and that in the sealing ceremony, after the proxy’s have been arranged, it is not necessary to make a distinction between the living and dead children by saying who are dead &c.

Third, that young people going through for their endowments with the intention of marrying in the templ some future day, [10 words redacted relating to a temple ordinance] [page break] [18 words redacted relating to a temple ordinance].

Fourth, [33 words redacted relating to a temple ordinance].

I attended my circle meeting in the evening.

23 June 1921 • Thursday

I attended my duties as usual at the temple. Pres. Grant was the speaker at the morning session.

I attended the weekly Council meeting of the Presidency & the Twelve & Patriarch in the temple. In the evening, Mother my daughter Nerva and I went with George & Edith in their auto and saw my daughter Sarah and there called at Estella Lee’s and saw her new home on Elm Ave. Sugar House.

24 June 1921 • Friday

I attended to the duties of the temple as usual. Elder James E. Talmage was the speaker at the meeting at 9:30. This is the anniversary of the birth day of father Willard Richards and the Richards family held its reunion at the Saltair resort.

25 June 1921 • Saturday

I took 8:10 A.M. train for Price arriving at 3 P.M. an hour & a half late. I spoke at the 2 P.M. meeting of the Carbon Stake Conference and occupied 30 minutes. Subject, “The [page break] fatherhood of God and brotherhood of man as understood through preexistence.[”]

In the evening I attended a meeting of the Stake Presidency and the Council of the 101st Quorum of Seventy. Fourteen elders were selected to be ordained Seventies and a president and secretary were selected and the following day were sustained in Conference and ordained and set apart. I set apart a branch president also this day and two the day following.

I stayed at the home of Pres. Anthon Henley.

26 June 1921 • Sunday

Price, Lund.

Warm day.

I attended and spoke at the 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. conference and the 4:30 P.M. Stake priesthood meeting.

In the morning I spoke upon the subject of Honor parents earthly and heavenly &c.

In the afternoon I spoke upon the subject of tithing. I the P. meeting I outlined the work for missionary work among outsiders. Attended to ordaining and settings apart.

I got a belated train at 10 P.M. and got off the train at 6 A.M. next morning. Had a good conference.

27 June 1921 • Monday

Warm day

I renewed my note of $800. at the bank and attended to other business in the morning.

I went to the temple where I was occupied with temple business during the day. I wore my palmbeach suit to-day for the first time time this season. At 6:30 George & LeGrand [page break] took their cars and their families and Mother, Nerva & me & others up to Pine Crest where we ate our luncheon in our cabin. On our return I ordained Charles Tindale Murray an elder he having the necessary credentials.

28 June 1921 • Tuesday

Home.

Warm weather

I attended quarterly conference meeting of the Twelve held in the temple from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. It was 5:30 when I left the temple.

In the evening Clarence and Mamie called on us and took us for a ride upon the boulevard.

29 June 1921 • Wednesday

I attended to temple duties. Sealed about 15 families and couples. Set apart Emma Lucy Gates Robinson and her sister, Sister J. A Widtsoe, temple workers.

This day my daughter Edna & her intended Charles Tindale Murray went through for endowments and Mother, our daughter Nerva and Orin Woodbury went through with them doing work for the dead. I attended Circle meeting at 6:30 P.M.

Spent the remainder of the evening at home.

30 June 1921 • Thursday

I went to the temple early as usual. Was with the Council of the Twelve and Presidency from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. except while attendance to [page break] temple ordinances. The sacrament was administered by Elders Jos. F. Smith & J E Talmage.

In the evening Mother, Nerva & I and Estella & Ray went with George & Clarence & their families up Emigration City Creek Canyon 5 miles and had our supper there.

We took Nerva & her two children to the [illegible]50 P.M. train and saw them off to Inkom.
