1 May 1921 • Sunday

I am fasting and am happy. Attended and spoke at morning sission of conference occupying about 45 min. Subject love of parents &c, God &c. 28% of the people were present.

After meeting I ordained Leavitt Chas. Leavitt Haight a patriarch and set him apart to labor in the Cassia Stake. I also Set apart Jo ordained John Frederick Adams a Bishop and set him apart to preside over the Oakley First Ward and I also set apart John J. Millard Jr. First Counselor & ordained Wilford M. DeLaMare a High Priest and set him apart second Counselor to Bp. Adams. The members of the Presidency of the stake laid on hands with me. Assisted by the Presidents of the 78th quorum of Seventy I ordained 28 Seventies who had been received as membership vote of the quorum the evening before. Later I ordained another Seventy and a High Priest and set the latter apart as alternate High Counselor.

At the afternoon meeting there were in attendance 526 or 27% of the Stake population. I occupied 60 minutes with good liberty on the subject of fundimentals what a knowledge of Pre-existance re[page break]veals of hidden things and forms a basis for faith and faithful living See Pre-existance & Investigator for text.

Loren J. Robinson Jr. drove me from Oakley 22 miles to Burley where I got train for home at 7:21 P.M. Mt. time.

2 May 1921 • Monday

Arrived in Salt Lake at 7:30 A.M.

When I had cleaned up and breakfasted I went to my office 213 and later to the temple where I remained until after 6 o’clock.

I spent the evening home writing &c. Mother and Sarah having complimentary tickets went to the N.Y. Philharmonica Concert in the Tabernacle. Received a letter from Nerva and answered it. &c.

3 May 1921 • Tuesday

I spent most of the day in the temple, performed some ordinances and set apart some temple workers. Presided at a missionary meeting and assisted in setting apart the missionaries.

New matters come up every day at the temple and I am kept busy. In the evening my son George & Edith took us, Mother & me to see the folks, Sarah, Lucena, LeGrand, Nina & Mamie and theirs. Sarah went along with us and we had a pleasant evening.

4 May 1921 • Wednesday

Warm day.

I went to the temple as usual and set apart Bros. Cardwell, Siddoway & Rand and Sister Jesse Maxwell also Sister Lacey Davis [page break] as regular temple workers. Attended to other ordinances, answered questions &c.

Made ready and took 1:15 P.M. train for Butte, thence for Cardston, Canada. A Miss Leonard made herself known to me as I went aboard the pullman in S.L.C. She is from Huntington and is going to Cardston to visit her relatives. I left folks at home well.

5 May 1921 • Thursday

Butte, Mont.

Am well.

Arrived in the earley morning and got 8 A.M. train out for G. Falls, arriving there on schedule time 3:35 P.M. I took room 208 at Park Hotel.

Wrote to Alice and to Sister Alice Ann. Did some studying &c. Towards morning I dreamed that my daughter Edna had committed suicide and was mourning over it.

Am well

I left for Cardston at 7:35 A.M. and arrived at about 7:50 P.M. Was met at station by Pres. Wood and taken to his home where I stayed while in Cardston. Attended picture show “Open Eyes” complimentary. Stormy.

7 May 1921 • Saturday

Cardston, Canada

Am well

Fine day after heavy rain yesterday.

I attended morning and afternoon conference meetings and spoke at each occupying about 40 min each time. Subject, My experiences and the lessons learned. Read items from Morden’s works. Self Reliance. [page break] Considered local conditions &c. At 4:30 I went through the temple with Pres Dunn & a company of outsiders including a Presbyterian Priest or minister.

In the evening I attended the home drama “The Third Degree.” It was very interesting

8 May 1921 • Sunday

Cardston, Canada

Am well

Stormy but not cold.

I attended 9 A.M. stake priesthood meeting and spoke 35 min. on vitalizing of the quorums.

At 10:30 Con. meeting I was asked to take what time I desired and spoke to the children 30 min. “Mothers Day” Recited “Which Shall it be”, “Which loved best”, [“]A Mother to her Son” & the story of Clarence and wood chopping.

At 12:30 I attended and addressed the 141st quo. of Seventies meeting on missionary work among outsiders. I then went into the H. Priests meeting and addressed them on genealogy & temple work. I set apart a president of the 141st quorum of Seventy and another ordination and administered to Sister Caldwell. At 2 P.M. I addressed the conference of 788 people for 1 hr 20 min with good freedom and voice, Subj. Investigator, Pre-existance a fundamental and key to several important questions unanswerable without that knowledge which the L.D.S. have.

At 7:30 meeting 525 present I spoke for about 40 min. The difference between Church of England [page break] Creed or articles of religion and ours.

This has been a strenuous day. Have spoken at six meetings and at the close was thoroughly tired in mind and in body. I praise the Lord for his assistance.

9 May 1921 • Monday

Cardston, Canada.

Am feeling well.

I went with Pres. Wood through the temple and at his office assisted by Pres. Wood, & Counselor Duce I set apart Bro. M. A. Coombs, President of the High Priests quorum and H. D. Fulsom 1st counselor and John F. Anderson second counselor. I ordained Jos. Y. Card an High Priest and set him apart 2nd Counselor to Bp Duce of the Cardstone 2nd Ward. I set apart Joseph Franklin Gibb a president of Seventy of the 141st quorum of Seventy.

Assisted by Pres Wood & Bro Duce I reconfirmed & sealed upon [first name, middle initial, and last name redacted] his former priesthood, endowments & sealings lost to him through excommunication, this by written authorization of Pres Grant.

I had a visit with the brethren and then returned to Pres. Woods’ home for dinner. I wrote up my journal from notes I had taken or made. I spent most of the afternoon and evening studying gospel subjects and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Retired about 11 P.M. I wrote to Alice.

10 May 1921 • Tuesday

Cardston.

I am well and happy as can be in the absence of my wife & family. [page break] I am made very welcome and comfortable here in the home of President Edward J. Wood.

I spent the day until 5 P.M. in the house studying. Then I walked down town and called on Alice’s sister Mamie Steed, inspected the Second ward new meeting house & was told that it is too small to accommodate all the people. Pres. Wood called for me and we went to see Sister Katie Hinsman Knowlton Hammer and assisted by her husband we administered to her. She is very poorly.

Next we went to the home of Brother M. A. Coons a son-in-law of Bro. Henry McCune’s and President of the H.P. Quorum where we met a number of other friends, had supper and spent the evening. The weather turned very cold with a stiff wind in the evening.

11 May 1921 • Wednesday

Cardston, Canada

I am well.

Clear, windy morning.

Stormed during the day.

I wrote letters to Sarah, Nina and my Sister Minerva in the morning and at about 11 A.M., I left Cardston for Cochrane ranch. We went through Glendale and Hillsprung wards and called at Pres. Wood’s daughters and got dinner. Returned about 6 P.M. I took a bath, cleaned my clothes, shined my shoes, wrote up my journal, wrote to my wife &c.

About 8 o’clock Bro. Snow of Raymond phoned up saying Pres Allen is very ill, stoppage of the bowels.

Bro Wood & I administered to a Bro. Larson. [page break]

12 May 1921 • Thursday

Cardston.

Am well.

I took 8 A.M. train for Lethbridge and was joined on train at Raymond by Bro. Snow of the Taylor Stake Presidency. We went to Bp. Geo. Green’s home where I spent the night. At the evening meeting Bro. Brandley of the stake Presidency approved.

He & Bro Snow each spoke briefly and I occupied about one hour with good liberty on the subject of Pre-existance as a fundamental principle and a key to many important principles which are obscure to the world. Also an example as a force to convert others.

13 May 1921 • Friday

Lethbridge.

I am well and happy.

Some snow on the ground this morning. With Bros. Brandley & Snow I left on 9 A.M. train for Sterling. We were met at the station by Bro. Brandley’s son & taken by auto 8 miles to Raymond. We went to the home of Pres. S. H. Allen and administered to him. We saw the Doctor there & he had been quite alarmed at Bro. Allen’s condition. In a couple of hours he was as he said well and hungry. He had eaten nothing for three days. Bro Brandley and I stayed at Pres Allen’s while in Raymond. I bathed and retired early. Had a conversation with the members of the Stake Presidency about closing the Academy or getting the district to take it off the hands of the Church.

14 May 1921 • Saturday

I attended 9 A.M. H. Council meet[page break]ing and addressed them. Attended the regular conference meetings at 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. and a stake Priesthood and officers meeting at 7 P.M. and a concert in the later evening. The subjects I treated were, the First Principles; Genealogy & temple work; missionary work, especially at home among non members. related my experiences coming up through tribulation and the lessons learned: so if we endure patiently our trials and tribulations in life being faithful we will be all right in the end and will look back upon our experiences with a degree of satisfaction. See how Pres Grant tells of the thousands worse off than nothing from which he has arrisen

I went out with Merlin and Frank Steed to the formers’ ranch about 6 miles after the afternoon meeting and saw his blooded cattle, barns &c. I understand he is owing the banks $88,000.00

Later, Merlin told me he is owing about $110,000.00. Attended Stake priesthood meeting and addressed the meeting for about 30 minutes, Subjects. Missionary work among non members and Genealogy & temple work. Our responsibility & our neglect. Later attended a concert.

15 May 1921 • Sunday

Raymond, Canada.

Am well.

Beautiful day

I attended and spoke at 10:30 A.M. meeting of the Presidency Conference, the 2 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. Conjoint meetings also the 150th quo. of Seventies where I set apart two presidents. Subjects treated. Parents love Rented Which shall it be & Clarence & A mother to her son in A.M. Two powers [page break] War in heaven. The valient, neutral and rebellious. Our place there & here. In the evening I spoke on W of Wisdom & particularly tobacco. I assisted in administering to three people in their homes. Took dinner with my cousin Phebe Longstroth Evans and supper with Sister Kimball & family formerly Miss Dunn of Tooele.

A busy day quite successful.

16 May 1921 • Monday

I left Raymond on 9:50 train, arrived in Gt. Falls at 7:10 P.M. I was met at the station by eight of the Elders. Went to the Park Hotel and occupied Room 203. President Iverson of the NWS. Mission cam in from the East a little later and we went to the meeting in the “Edison Recital Hall,” where we had probably 75 people and I occupied about 45 min. Subject Investigation and Pre-existance. Pres Iverson also spoke.

After this meeting we met with the Elders and I addressed them for about 20 minutes. A local Brother from [blank] took Bro Iverson and me to supper and after supper he & I visited in my room so that it was 1 A.M. when I got to bed.

Important

This morning when I went to the Ry Station at Raymond I was handed a telegram from Orin Woodbury saying that Nina had given birth to a 8¼ lb baby boy Sat. the 14th at 5 P.M. All doing will. This was a source of much satisfaction to me. I had been anxious about her. [page break]

Gt. Falls, Mont.

I left for home on 8 A.M. train

Arrived in Butte at 3:00 P.M. Left Butte on 5:10 train. While in Butte I wrote up my journal for two days and sent telegram to Nina & Orin.

18 May 1921 • Wednesday

I arrived in Salt Lake at 8:15 A.M. Spoke at the temple meeting. I had more marrying and sealing of children than on any previous day.

I called on my daughter Nina and saw her new baby boy. He is fine. Also saw for a few moments, Lucena & Mamie & their children.

Alice and I attended the graduation exercises for the nurses and we were particularly interested because our daughter Ruby is one of the number.

19 May 1921 • Thursday

I went to the temple as usual attended to the sealing of the living answered many questions and attended council meeting from 10 to about 4 oclock except while administering the ordinances.

In the evening Mother & I went down to LeGrands’ with George and Edith it being LeGrands’ & Ina’s 12th weding anniversary. Spent the evening pleasantly there.

Thu., May 20th

I spent the day in the temple

I was in council with my brethren [page break] from 10 to 4 P.M. except while attending to the sealings &c. Bro. James Gunn McKay & wife returned from London stayed the night with us.1

20 May 1921 • Friday

Home.

I took 7 A.M. train I worked in the temple all day. Pres James Gunn McKay & wife, recently returned from London stayed the night with us.

21 May 1921 • Saturday

I took 7 A.M. train for Malad and arrived in time to speak at the morning session of conference. I also spoke at the afternoon session Subject (55 min.) proneness of men to be hearers & not doers of the law. Need of being impressed. Dives might have been councted by his friends & himself and fortunate in life but his condition later was most unfortunate. Lazarrus condition the reverse.

I attended concert in the evening.

22 May 1921 • Sunday

Malad.

I occupied the time of a 9 A.M. meeting of Sunday School workers 171 being present, See Officers.

At 10 A.M. meeting I occupied 40 minutes. Subject—Love & honor parents, earthly & heavenly Recited Which Shall it be, A Mother to Her Son &c.

At 2 P.M. I occupied 40 min. Subj. Hist: repeats itself, & Restoration

Good spirit, good liberty, May the Lord be praised.

I stayed at Pres. Richards white in [page break] Malad. Left on 6:30 train; got off at Fielding and was met by my Nephew Josheph H Smith who took me to his mother my sister’s. She being ill, I administerd to her. After an hr & a half Joseph took me by auto to Dewyville where I got late Electric train for home. Arrived home at 1 P.M.

I went to the temple as usual where I spent the day.

24 May 1921 • Tuesday

I spent the day at the temple as usual. Attended a Book Committee at Bro. Talmage’s office.

In the evening Mother and I accompanied Geo. & Edith in their car down to Sugar Ward to see some of our folks.

By request of Orin & Nina I blessed and named their baby Orin Richards Woodbury.

25 May 1921 • Wednesday

I went to the temple as usual and at the opening meeting, made the opening prayer. Attended to a number of items of business besides the regular marrying and sealing. I set apart two of the temple workers. Instructed the cooks through Recorder, Bp. Christensen to not serve raw onions and cooked cabbage. I gave instructions to as far as possible in baptizing have a man and his wife in the faunt at the same [page break] time or two men at the same time and two women at the same time and not a man and woman.

I attended my circle meeting & the graduation exercises of the L.D.S.U. from which 223 graduated including my son Oliver

26 May 1921 • Thursday

Home.

All well.

Beautiful day.

I attended to temple duties and attended weekly Council meeting from 10 A.M. to 1:30 P.M.

President Penrose said to me that the Presidency would be absent next Sunday and he asked me to preside at the tabernacle. I engaged Brother Benjamin Goddard to speak on that occassion. My son George took his family and Mother and me for a ride and we went down to Hyland Park and called upon my daughter Lucena and family.

27 May 1921 • Friday

Beautiful day.

I went to the temple as usual where I spent most of the day

I called on the Presidency and presented to them several important matters. Received their approval to have a special session of temple work next Wed. evening in honor of Pres. Brigham Young that day June 1st being the 120th anniversary of his birth, the session to be for men of the family who can not well go through in the day sessions.

In the evening Mother & I [page break] went down to our daughter Sarah’s where we spent an hour or two.

28 May 1921 • Saturday

I spent the day at the temple until about 2 P.M.; then went home to dinner. Afterward my son George and others called.

Geo cut my hair &c.

29 May 1921 • Sunday

I attended 27th ward priesthood meeting at 9 A.M., S. School at 10:30 and Sacramental meeting in the evening, and at the latter I was the speaker occupying 50 min. “History Repeats Itself.”

In the absence of the members of the First Presidency I presided at the Large Tabernacle and Benjamin Goddard was the speaker. This has been a full day.

30 May 1921 • Monday

This being “Decoration Day” my sons George & LeGrand with their cars took their families and Mother, Ray and me out to Tooele where we decorated our graves, with a great concourse of other people who were employed in similar work. LeGrand & George took their wives and Mother & me to the Salt Lake Theatre in the evening. “Mary Rose”

31 May 1921 • Tuesday

I was at the temple at 8 A.M. as usual. Attended a D&C Committee meeting and the balance of the day was spent in the temple.

I received from my sister Nellie Webber a framed picture of the First Presidency and the Twelve when [page break] Brigham Young was president and my father was the junior member.

I spent the evening at home. Bathed & retired early but was kept awake by the children coming in so that I did not get my usual amount of sleep. I spoke to Edna & Murray and asked if they weren’t keeping late hours. That was at 11:30 and I suppose it gave serious offence as it caused Edna to cry when Murray had gone.
