Worked at my desk before going to a meeting with the Twelve and Presidents of the Seventies at temple at 11:00 A.M. Our regular meeting of the Twelve, Presidency & Patriarch having been postponed to Friday. [p. 25]
Met with Conjoint M.I.A. Bd. from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Walked home with my daughter Sarah & Sister Connelly. Called at my son George’s in evening, made checks in payment of bills & mailed some.

This being our quarterly meeting of the Presidency, the Twelve & Patriarch I fast. Attended our Quarterly meeting in the temple from 10:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. All present except Elder Hyrum M. Smith who is in England. Sacrament administered by Prests Lund & Penrose.
I laid before Pres Lyman my plans according to previous understanding for my trip to California to leave here Friday Apr. 9th and hold meetings in Sacramento Sunday the 10th in San Francisco the 17th & 18th & in Los Angeles Apr 24th & 25th and be home for Sund. May 2nd. He indorsed my plan but said for me to see all there is to be seen and stay as long as I wished.
My wife, my son George & wife expect to go together and see the Fair at San Francisco & the Fair at San Diego and the Country generally. My Son George spent an hour [p. 26] with us in the evening planning for our California trip.

I attended a meeting of the Twelve, the First Council of Seventy & the Mission Presidents in the temple from 10 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. with an hour’s recess.
Called at my Son George’s and spent an hour or more and Geo. cut my hair. Edith has headache. I bought a StetSon $4.00 hat at Z.C.M.I.

I attended the opening session of Conference in the Large Tabernacle. An overflow meeting was held in the Assembly Hall presided over by Elder Rudger Clawson. I received the appointment to preside over an open air meeting to be held in the grounds in front of the Bureau of Information in the afternoon. Jos. F. Smith Jr to preside at Assembly Hall.
At the 2:00 P.M. meeting in front of the Bureau of Information meeting I presided and was the first speaker occupying 17 or 18 minutes [p. 27] subject. Why our Elders are not converted by ministers of the world & why we convert thousands in the world. Mormonism a positive religion &c. The other Speakers were, German E. Ellsworth, Jos. E Robinson and J. G. Kimball.
Attended S. School Union meeting in the evening in the Large tabernacle.
Geo & Edith took supper with us.

I attended the forenoon and afternoon meetings in the large tabernacle & was excused by Pres. Smith from the evening priesthood meeting and attended a meeting of the University of Utah Alumni Association held in one of the U of U buildings from 8:30 to 12:15 o’clock. A spirited meeting. The voting was about 194 and 137 the majority favoring an investigation of U. of U. difficulties causing the resignation of 16 proffessors by a committee from the Alumni or appointed by them.
We had good conference meetings. [p. 28]

Beautiful morning.
We are anxious about our son LeGrand & family in Holland not having heard any thing from them for about three weeks and the last word was that the baby was very sick with whooping cough.
At the morning meeting of conference to-day I was one of the four speakers. Pres. Smith requested me to take 15 minutes and I did so to the minute with good freedom and when through Pres. Smith shook my hand and said good. He later shook my hand and said I hit the nail on the head. May the Lord be praised.
After meeting two bishops of Sevier Stake met me and said while Elder Talmage was speaking a brother sitting by them Said how about the Adam God doctrine. They wanted to know how they could answer. I said well Brigham Young said Adam is the only God with whom we will have to do. Now, When the earth was formed God the Father, Elohim instructed other Gods to go down & accomplish a work. They did as commanded & reported, James & Jon & Peter came in & they reported [p. 29] to Jehovah & Jehovah to Elohim. To whom will we report but Adam one of the Gods? This, seemed to satisfy
Attended the concluding session of the Conference in the afternoon.
My son George & Edith took supper and spent the evening with us. A letter from our daughter Lucena at Logan informs us that She was sick in bed at that time.

Joel wired Rega at Logan requesting an answer which did not come.
I attended Special priesthood meeting from 10 to 12:30 o’clock. Worked at my desk until about 6 P.M. and attended my Circle meeting and later Alice & I attended a reception at the Bps. Bldg. tendered to the general Authorities & invited guests, office force at Pres.’ office & at Bps. building, temple workers & others. A pleasant affair.

Pleasant day but it rained nearly all day night.
I attended regular weekly Council meeting from 10:00 to 2:30 P.M. Made preparation to start to California tomorrow. [p. 30]

My son George & I spent the forenoon down town making read to leave for California and later at home busy.
At 4:15 P.M. George & Edith and Mama & I took O.S.L. train for California via O.S.L. & So. Pacific. A number of the children went to the station to see us off and both sides stood the parting well with but few tears. We had a very pleasant ride and rest & visit and enjoyed the change. We crossed the Salt Lake before it got dark, 33 miles from shore to shore. Mother did not have a good night’s sleep.

Fine weather.
We were up and ready to see the country in good time and Sparks Nevada was the first town reached after we had breakfasted. Here Pres. Jos. E. Robinson who had accompanied us from Salt Lake got off the train with us and we met a brother Vanderhoff & his wife who are about the only saints at Sparks. We also [p. 31] met the Pres. of the Sacramento branch, bro. J [blank] who expects to join us in Sacramento tomorrow.
The country all day was beautiful & to us novel and we did enjoy same as well as our visit together. We reached Sacramento at 5 P.M. and detrained. Went to Hotel Clunie and took rooms 331 and 329 both between. Pres Robinson took room 342.
We all five walked out together and inspected the State Capitol grounds & building and from the train had a good view of the City. Pres. Robinson went a short distance to where the Elders were rooming and got them and brought them over to see us, Elders Stewart from [blank] and Elder Baxter from [blank]
After supper at the Vienna Cafe G. & E & M. & I. we walked up one side & down the other of the main business street which runs East & West. Retired about 9:30 P.M. after having a good bath. Rested & slept well.

I arose about 7:00 A.M. and after shaving and otherwise making my toilet, I wrote up my journal from Thu. last to the present & then gave thought & study of the spiritual things.
Alice, Geo., & Edith & I attended S. School at 10:00 A.M. and I addressed the School for about 20 min. Subject. Comparison of S. School here & in Zion. One a type of the other. What the gospel had done for man in a spiritual way who had embraced the gospel in the world and had local authority and responsibility. The gospel the same & has the same effects every where. Attended meeting following S. School and was the Speaker & occupied about 40 min. Subject “Honor thy Father & Mother” Why & how to Honor God. Why & how. Recited “Abou Ben Adhem” & “A Mother to her Son.” Good liberty & Good assistance from the Lord. Mentioned the relationship we sustain to God, His personality &c. Why the world spend so much for Genealogies. To determine one’s ancestry if he is of Noble birth &c.
We four took dinner at cafeteria and after dinner visited the Art Gallery and Sacramento River front. We took Gitney and [p. 33] Saw the city four of us for $1.75. Pres. Robinson went to Gridley in the morning and returned for the evening meeting. At this meeting I occupied about 30 minutes. Subject. our duty to preach the gospel Read Ezek. 3:17 Prejudice to be overcome by example. Example & it’s effects &c. After meeting Pres Robinson took us to the Drug Store & treated us to Ice cream.
I wrote to LeGrand & to Lucena.
12 April 1915 • Monday
Sacramento.
All well.
We took train for San Francisco at 8:15 A.M. and were comfortably located in Clark Hotel at 12: noon. We got rooms 324 & 326 nicely furnished outside rooms with baths, toilets & closets for $12.50 ea. per week. On the way over our train was ferried across the neck of the bay about a half mile distant and at Oakland we took boat across the bay three miles to San Francisco.
After dinner we went to the Panama International Exposition grounds and remained until about 8:30 P.M. We [p. 34] were present at the ceremonies of opening of the Utah building at 4:00 P.M. which were presided over by brother [blank] Spencer. About 300 or 400 people were present. The meeting was held out doors and were quite impressive.
The Canada building and exhibit is the most beautiful I have ever seen and far beyond my powers to adequately describe. The buildings at night when the search lights are turned on are most beautiful and especially the towers of jewels.
We returned to hotel at 9:00 P.M. Geo. & Edith went out to breakfast and Mama & I retired without supper. A good bath added to my comfort.
A telegram from Joel at home says the children do not seem to miss us and all are well. Aunt Seney much better.
13 April 1915 • Tuesday
San Francisco.

We took Auto sight seeing car at 10: A.M. and went out through the Golden Gate park to the ocean and saw the seals on the rocks [p. 35] near the Cliff House & Sutro Heights. Returned via fair grounds. A two hour’s trip most pleasant $1.00 round trip each. About 25 persons on the car. Wrote letter to Lucena and card to Ray. After dinner we went by Gitney to Fair Grounds and inspected the exhibits until they closed the doors 6:00 P.M. We viewed the exterior of buildings & beautiful surroundings and saw the colored search lights and special fire works the finest I ever saw. The crowd at night was immense. We reached home about 10:00 P.M. very tired and did not go out to supper.
14 April 1915 • Wednesday
San Francisco.
I had a good night’s rest. Arose at 7:00 A.M. bathed shaved & dressed for the day & wrote up my journal for yesterday.
Went to breakfast and Mother, Geo., Edith & I took Gitney to Ferry & Boat across the Bay, Key Route and Electric car to Berkley and there met a brother Brighton who showed us through the California University grounds. We then took car to Oakland and to Piedmont Park and spent an hour or so and re-[p. 36]turned by Key Route to San Francisco arriving at our rooms at 8:10 P.M. Telegram from home says all are well. Salt Lake paper received through Hotel. This has been an interesting day for us and we have been very favorably impressed with the beauty of the resident portion of town between the business portion & Piedmont district.
We spent an hour before retiring in playing rook.
15 April 1915 • Thursday
San Francisco.

Fine day.
Geo. & Edith, Mama & I went to the Exposition grounds and spent about five hours walking about seeing the various exhibits until we were about tired out. Returning we went to the Cafeteria and took dinner before going to our hotel, Clark, arriving there about 5:00 P.M. I wrote up my journal, wrote cards &c. Wrote to LeGrand.
Visited to-gether and had a game of Rook in evening. [p. 37]

All well.
Pleasant day.
We four went through the U.S. Mint and saw more gold than ever before, hundreds of thousands & perhaps millions of dollars in coins & bars.
We went out to the Mt. Olivet & Cyprus Lawn Cemeteries &c. Elder Wild went with us to supper. Pres. Jos E. Robinson came from Los. Angeles & put up at Clark Hotel. Sisters Thomason & Foster of the Primary Gen. Bd. came in this evening and put up at some hotel. Geo. & I. sent our suits out to be pressed.

San Francisco.
All well.
Pleasant day.
We received a telegram from Joel at noon informing us that one of Sister Droubay’s children has the whooping cough and as Georges & Edith’s children are staying there and are exposed we were considerably disturbed by that word. We decided that Mother, Geo., & Edith leave here tomorrow morning and go as far as Santa Barbara, & stay over night tomorrow, Sund. so as to see the country by [p. 38] day light; that I leave tomorrow night after meetings and join them at Santa Barbara Mond. morning, thence on to Los Angeles & San Diego.
We witnessed a parade in the forenoon commemorating the 9th anniversary which would be tomorrow Sunday, of the great earthquake & fire here.
Attended a meeting of the missionaries and local brethren from 1:00 P.M to 5:15 P.M. 34 of us spoke briefly except that I occupied 50 minutes & Pres J. E. Robinson occupied an hour & a half. Spent the evening at our rooms planning & making preparations to leave. We settled for our rooms on the basis of $2.00 per day each.
18 April 1915 • Sunday
San Francisco, Cal.
All well
I saw Mother, Geo. & Edith off on S.P. Coast line train at 7:45 A.M. and returned to the hotel and wrote up my journal for yesterday. Left for Oakland at 8:40 and arrived in time for 10:00 A.M. meeting, attendance 240. I was one [p. 39] of the speakers and occupied 35 min with good liberty. Subject, marriage. Pres. J. E. Robinson & I took dinner & supper with brother & Sister Toraldson and met at their apartment Miss Toraldson’s cousin Miss Peterson and bro & Sister Danvers.
At 2 P.M. meeting the attendance was 250. I occupied 40 min. Subj. Tithing. Above written on train.
Between meetings we administered blessings to a sister Hunt and another to lady Sister [blank] I was mouth in each instance.
At the evening meeting Pres. Robinson and I were the speakers I occupied 40 min Subject, Gospel principles & ordinances necessary to salvation. Faith while a condition & necessary not sufficient.
After meeting I shook hands with many people who made them selves known.
Elder Stanley Ivins accompanied me to the station where I took 9:40 PM train for Los Angeles.

On train from San F.
Am well had a good night’s rest. I arose at 6:00 and at 10:30 was joined by Mother, [p. 40] George & Edith at Santa Barbara and we journeyed South to San Diego arriving there at 6:50 P.M. and put up at Hotel Federal and we all went out to the Exposition and pronounced it very fine comparing favorably with that at San Francisco.

Weather fine
We went out to breakfast at 7:00 A.M. and took an Auto one hr. for $1.50 and say a part of the town. Left San Diego at 8:40 A.M. and arrived in Los Angeles at 12:50 P.M.
Transferred to So. Pacific Station & checked our baggage and etc. We took auto to Venice, Ocean Beach, Santa Monica & return 75¢ each. Returning to City we took supper together at the cafeteria and after seeing Geo & Edith off on the Orvele train for San Francisco at 6 P.M. we took car and came out here to the Brunswick apartments recommended by Pres. Jos E. Robinson. Found letters for Geo. & Edith there. We wrote letters and mailed these letters to George. Wrote up my journal for past two days. [p. 41]
Geo. & Edith left for home this evening because their children have been & are now exposed to whooping cough. George would have liked to have stayed longer and would have done so but that Edith was determined to go home leaving here to-night.

Los. Angeles, Cal.
Rained during the night and raining this morning.
Alice & I went to San Berdino on 11:00 A.M. train and returned on train arriving in Los Angeles at 7:10 P.M. Distance 65 miles from Los Angeles.
We went out nine miles to St. Gabriel and went to the Mission play which is a splendid play arrived at our head quarters at midnight.

We had thought of going to Catelina to-day but gave it up.
We went out to Pasadena on Electric Car and hired Auto to see the town & we were delighted. On our return Pres. Robinson took us out for a couple of hours & showed us Los Angeles resident district most beautiful and it is really grand & compares well [p. 42] with Pasadena. We stopped off down town & took supper & rode to our quarters on Gitney buss.
This has been a day of exceeding great pleasure. Letters from home. We wrote letters and cards.

I attended a meeting of the missionaries of Los Angeles Conference with a few local and visiting brethren and we all spoke. The meeting was of seven hours duration and we fasted. While in meeting Elder A. W. Ivins came in, he and Sister Ivins having come from San Diego the day before. There were 32 speakers. After the meeting we took dinner at the conference house Sisters of the reliefsociety served dinner and we who had wives had them with us. On invitation of Pres Robinson & wife, Elder Ivins & wife & Mama & I accompanied them to the theatre, “The sign of the rose.[”] We enjoyed it very much.
Elder Ivins and wife said they had counted on our accompanying them to Catalina Island even before leaving home and [p. 43] as to-morrow would be their only opportunity Elder Ivins having to leave Sunday for Elpaso, I obtained Pres. Robinsons acquiescence to my going and we arranged it that way.

I wrote up my journal for yesterday and did other writing.
Mother & I and A. W. Ivins & wife went to Catalina Island leaving Los Angeles at 9:10 A.M. and returning at 6:45 P.M. The Catalina Island is 22 miles long and 8 miles wide at widest point and 25 miles off the shore of San Pedro. The cross currents on this voyage usually make it conducive to sea sickness. A number were so effected to day but our party went & returned all right. We had an enjoyable time. Mother and I walked from ten to 15 blocks and retired without supper at about 10:00 P.M. & had a good night’s rest.

Attended and addressed forenoon meeting, attendance 403. Occupied 40 min. Subject: Evidences of the divine [p. 44] mission of the Prophet Joseph and the truth of the gospel, Joseph’s first prayr & vision, Three and eight witnesses &c. Suggested by A. W. Ivins talk. Afternoon meeting attendance 338 I occupied 40 min. Subject Evidences of the truth of Mormonism & the divine mission of the Prophet Joseph. A tree is known by its fruits and Gospel one only, Its origin &c.
After meeting I administered a a blessing to Solomon Hale 74 yrs of age and at his request. I had been talking to him about the W. of Wisdom which he acknowledged he was not keeping and he said if I thought he could keep it and advised it he would try & do so & asked for a blessing that he might have strength to do so. Pres Robinson assisted me. Several of us administered to brother Dykes an Elder who is having throat trouble.
We rode down to Deseret the home of Pres. Smith and to the beach in auto. At evening meeting the attendance was 246. There were six speakers. I did not get an opportunity. Stephen L. Richards Jr made his appearance and was one of the speakers.
After meeting Ma & I took 10 P.M. [p. 45] train S.O.P. Valley Route 10 P.M. for home.

Arrived home, Salt Lake, at 6:30 A.M. Found folks well but some of the children cough some and have been exposed to Whooping cough.
I bathed shaved & change my apparel and cleared my desk of correspondence. Phoned some of the folks &c.
I attended Y.M.M.I. meeting and my Circle meeting. Called on my Sister Asenath who is confined to her bed. I administered to her.

Attended weekly Council meeting in the temple from 9:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Read two chapters of Elder Jas. E. Talmage’s book on the Christ at [p. 46] this meeting.
I received the appointment to St. Johns & Snowflake Stakes with Elders Jos. F. Smith Jr. & Chas. H. Hart to attend their quarterly Conferences and look in to flood damages &c.
In the evening I attended an entertainment in the 27th ward given by the Primary workers & children in which three of our children took part.

I went down town in forenoon and attended to some business and called on my sister Asenath and administered to her.
In afternoon I went through the temple for Wm Gill. My sister Nerva & Alice accompanied me.
I spent spare time on my records.
