1 January 1929 • Tuesday
At home.
Am well.
Stormy.
Spencer, Estella and baby are with us from Tremonton.
We had a quiet day. Estella and her baby, both came down with Tonsillitis. Spencer remained with them while Mother & I went to the Play-house matinee. Mother missed them and she had her hands full.
2 January 1929 • Wednesday
Am well.
Stormy & cold.
I spent much of the day at my desk at the temple and at home while Mother waited on the Sick ones. I visited Joel F. Grover by request and administered to him a blessing. He is in a very low condition, not likely to recover. I called at Nina’s in Sugar House & Saw her baby Maryland who is convalescing from a sick spell of about a week or longer.
I fixed up my tithing record for the year 1928 and made a check favor of my Bishop for balance due in a settlement of same.
3 January 1929 • Thursday
I met with the Twelve in the Temple at 8:30 A.M. and in regular council of the First Council <Presidency> & Twelve from 10: A.M. to about 2: P.M. then continuing with the Twelve until about 3: P.M.
I spent the evening with other members of the family at Sarahs by invitation. Snow storm on in afternoon & evening. [page break]

Home.
All well.
Estella & baby are at our home ill with tonsillitis but improving. Nina’s baby is convalescing.
I spent some time in the Dentists chair which cost me $6.00 for several small fillings. Mother & I went to a show in evening.
5 January 1929 • Saturday
I spent the forenoon at home and the afternoon at the Temple, and the evening at home. Edna came from Ogden about dark with a young man, Joseph Lindsay and spent the evening & night. Lou & Rega called and spent some time with us.
Estella & Baby are improving, Mother is not very well.
Spencer Taylor’s brother died at about 11: A.M.
6 January 1929 • Sunday
Folks improved
We are having cold weather and snow sufficient to make good sleighing. I spent the forenoon at home studying, and listening to the radio. I heard a splendid discourse by Nephi G. Morris in the Tabernacle, to [illegible] of 30 min. I attended the Sun. <fast sun.> [causing?] service in the 27th ward & offered closing prayer. Mother is coming down with Flu & some other ailment, apparently.
7 January 1929 • Monday
Our sick folks about as usual.
The Temple opened this morning and I presided at the Temple meeting and made the opening remarks. At 9:00 A.M. I met with the Twelve in their quarterly meeting which continued [page break] until about 5: P.M.
I spent the evening at home.
8 January 1929 • Tuesday
Mother, Estella & baby not very well.
LeGrand & Ina called in and we administered to all three. The weather continues very cold with snow on the ground. I spent the forenoon at the Temple and attended the funeral services for Heber Taylor in Yale & ward @ 1:00 P.M.
I brought Sarah & Nerva from their homes up to our home for a visit and took them home again. Spent the evening at home.

I went to the Temple as usual where I spent a busy day until about 8: P.M. when I went home.
10 January 1929 • Thursday
I attended 8:30 A.M. Temple meeting & a 9: A.M. meeting of the Twelve and a 10 A.M. meeting of the Presidency & The Twelve
Attended to business as usual in the afternoon. Visited Joel Grover at his home and administered to him. He is in a dieing condition, having internal cancer.
11 January 1929 • Friday
Mother, Estella and baby are improved in health. The weather is somewhat moderated. I went to the Temple as usual in the early morning. Set apart Edward S. Rich a Temple worker.
With Mother and LeGrand & Ina & Nona in LeGrand’s Car, we left home at 3:00 P.M. for Ruby’s. Had a pleasant & quick trip. We received a generous welcome and a good feed, and spent a pleasant evening. [page break]

Cornish, Utah
All well
Cold day.
My Son LeGrand & I in his Car went to Richmond where we attended the Benson Stake Conference and we both spoke at both sessions. We went to dinner with Bro. G. A. Hogan of Lewiston. Spent the evening at Ruby’s.
13 January 1929 • Sunday
LeGrand and I went to Conference in Richmond and Spoke at the forenoon meeting. We returned to Cornish, about 13 miles distant and took dinner with Ruby and Jack. Our Company came as far as Richmond on our way home and Jack & Ruby in their car. We all attended the afternoon Conference meeting. LeGrand & I both spoke again.
After meeting I ordained & Set apart twenty-two officers. I set apart the Bishopric of Cornish the day before.
To-day I ordained where necessary and set apart the Bishopric of Lewiston 3d ward, Six High Counselors, an alternate, 4 President of the 7th Quorum of Seventy, 5 Presidents of the 17th quorum of Seventies and one President of the 39th quorum of seventy and the secretaries to two of these quorums. We called and visited for about 40 minutes with our daughter Edna at Ogden and arrived home about 9 o’clock. We found Estella’s baby not so well and Mother gave her treatment and made her bed by ours where she gave the baby a motherly care during the night.
14 January 1929 • Monday
I was in the Temple at 7:10 A.M.
Had a busy day. Went home [page break] about 8: P.M. Mother spent part of the day in the Temple.
During the afternoon I took Mother, Estella and the baby down to Nina’s in Sugar House where we spent about an hour and brought Nina back with us. The baby is very much improved to-day.
15 January 1929 • Tuesday
All fairly well.
Weather moderated
Ray left for Albion & Rexburg, Idaho, yesterday with others of a basket ball team in an auto buss.
I went to the Temple and attended to desk work & other important business. I assisted in setting apart a large company of missionaries. I set apart 7 or eight. I attended to some business with the Presiding Bishopric, Temple matters. I retired at 12: mid night having spent the evening reading the Era.

I attended to my duties at the Temple as usual, a busy day. Attended my Circle meeting in the evening.
17 January 1929 • Thursday
I attended committee meeting of the Twelve at 9: A.M. and regular Council meeting at 10: A.M. Attended to my work at the temple, disposing of some important matters. Called at Olivers in the evening & got Estella & baby & took them home.
18 January 1929 • Friday
A good fall of Snow.
Mother & I went to the temple as usual. I attended to important business besides the regular work. I requested Jas Christensen, Recorder to ask to be released [page break] from his position of Libraries for the Genealogical Society. This he consented to do. I interviewed Prests Ivins & Nibley also Jos. F. Smith, A. K. Smith, Bro Bennett & Sis. Simpton of the Genealogical Society before asking for Bro. C’s resignation or release. Bro. Jos F. Smith & I set apart Bro. Joseph Eckersley a Temple ordinance worker, he being mouth. I set apart as ordinance worker, the following; Geo. A. Nielsen, Huldah Garft Michelson, Florence Rosina Cornell Knight and Minnie Mae Knight, assisted by Bro. Christensen except in the case of G. A. Nielson where Bro. Rogers assisted me.
I had the appointment to attend the Curlew Stake Conference at Holbrook & made ready to go and had my overcoat on and was putting on my scarf to leave for the depot when a phone call from the President’s office informed me that a wire message had been received from the Stake President saying that a blizzard was raging in that section which made it impossible for an auto to get through to Malad. I rejoiced that I did not have to make the trip under the circumstances. I returned to the Temple and attended to the Setting apart of the above

Estella & baby are with us still.
I spent some time shoveling snow as there was a heavy fall of snow last night and yesterday afternoon. I took Lucena and Estella down to the Victory on my way to the Temple. This is Hugh J. Cannon’s 59th birth day anniversary and Mother & I have invited them to go to a show in the afternoon. [page break]
20 January 1929 • Sunday
I spent the forenoon at home studying. Edna, Estella & Spencer were with us until about 3: P.M. when they left for home. I attended the Tabernacle Services, Milton Bennion, speaker. Mother and I called at LeGrands & he & I administered to Mamie’s baby Leroy who had a spasm in the forenoon, cause may have been worms. Clarence & Mamie are in California. We called on Joel F. Grover who is in a dieing condition with Cancer internally. I administered to him. We called at Mamies, at Ninas and at Nerva’s and returned home about 8: P.M. Lucena & Rega Called on us and had luncheon with us.
21 January 1929 • Monday
Mother & I went to the Temple in the early morning as usual. After meeting I had Mother, Sister Christensen, Jas. Christenson & Elder Jos F. Smith together in my room and we talked over the matter of feeding the people. Our Meat bill for Nov. was $449.50.
We want to trim the meat bills &c. I took my car to the Shop to have the Starter adjusted so as to not lock &c. We left the Temple for home about 7:30.
22 January 1929 • Tuesday
I went to the Temple in the morning. Attended to important business and worked at my desk until 2:10 P.M.
I took Mother and Nerva down to Sarah’s and while they visited I called on Levi Savage and Theo. Tobiason at their homes, a/c illness. [page break] As my guests, Mother, George & Edith went with me to the Victory Theater at 8 P.M. and saw the Haunted House.” After that we held a director’s meeting at our home until 11:30 P.M. Sub zero weather.
A real blizzard of snow and wind is on. Mother & I went to the Temple to the morning meeting as usual. We had a busy day & transacted important business. Mother went through in the 1: P.M. session with her sisters Annie & Estella. I had some dental work done treating a tooth. Attended prayer circle, &c.
A record of temple work done for the Richards Family under the direction of my father while he was alive and by Bro. [blank] Parks has been found among Records in the Salt Lake Temple.

I spent about 6 hrs in meetings with my brethren in the Temple and attended to my temple duties between & after. A busy day.

I delivered to F. S. Richards the Richards Temple Record recently found among the Records in the S.L.T.
26 January 1929 • Saturday
I had the appointment to attend the Lehi Stake Conference, but was notified Thursday that the conference had been postponed on account of Spinal meningitis so [page break] being so prevalent. I then was asked by Pres Ivins to Speak at the Tabernacle Sunday, but this morning was informed by Pres. Ivins that the Pioneer Stake is holding its conference and will require the Tabernacle so I was released from that appointment and appointed to go to Palmyra Stake at Spanish Fork tomorrow in lieu of Levi E. Young, who had been appointed. I spent the forenoon shoveling snow, studying &c at the temple for some time. In the afternoon I took Mother to ogden and left her with Edna who is not very well.
27 January 1929 • Sunday
I went to Spanish Fork in my car 60 miles in less than two hours and attended and spoke at the 10: A.M. & 2: P.M. Sessions. I ordained & set apart the bishopric of Salem ward also the Bishopric of Palmira ward & ordained four Seventies.
I left Spanish Fork at 4:30 and arrived in Salt Lake at 6:20 P.M. I phoned mother at Ogden and learned that Edna was better I offered to go up after mother but she preferred to remain until Monday. I spent a couple of hours in the evening at my Son George’s home.
28 January 1929 • Monday
I went to the Temple as usual. Edward D. Rich was speaker at the Temple meeting. I remained at the Temple until about 2: P.M. when I took my car, the DeSoto, and got George & Edith & Robt. and went to Ogden and after a stay of several hours returned bringing [page break] mother with us, she having been with Edna since last Saturday
George made repairs on Edna’s radio while there. I made the round trip on 4 gal. of gas 85.3 miles or 21.3 miles to the gallon. There is a thaw on. The road going to Ogden was slushy with snow, ice and water. Returning, the road was frozen hard, great banks of snow on both sides of the road gave a feeling of security in driving. A pleasant trip. Edna is improved in health.

I went to the Temple in the morning as usual.
I had a meeting of about 2 hrs duration with the Recorders & others in my office considering Telephone arrangements for the Temple &c. Towards evening I took mother down to Mamie’s for a short visit as she had not seen Mamie since her return a few days ago from California. I spent the later evening at home, reading &c.

Mother & I went to the Temple as usual in the morning, where I spent a busy day. Spent the evening at the Temple until about 8:30 or 9: P.M. Attended my circle meeting at 6:30
31 January 1929 • Thursday
I attended Temple meeting, a meeting of the First Presidency & the Twelve, and a meeting of the Twelve. I took Mother down to Sugar House where she gave treatment to our dau. Nina who is ill, in bed. We returned to the [page break] temple where we remained until a late hour. Large companies this day & evening, 1760 endowed for during the day.
