Sis. E. R. Snow Smith of S. L. C. [Salt Lake City] next addressed the Conference Considered it a great privilege to be permitted to meet together thus—“it was not always allowed,[”] wondered if it would continue to be so. Compared the present condition of the Saints with their circumstances when she first came to Utah. “We have been greatly blessed. We must improve in everything, and become fit to associate not only with angels, but with Gods & Godesses.[”]

God’s purpose in instituting these organizations, was the perfection of the young.

Advised all to keep the Sabbath Day holy.

To the Y. L. [Young Ladies] about forming their characters, said be independent, don’t fear ridicule, never do what you fear is not quite right, never turn aside from doing right for anything. It is our privilege to live so near God that He will aid us in all things.

To mothers—teach the principles of the Gospel around the fireside; the future of your sons & daughters depends to a great extent on you: what is the spirit of your homes?

Spoke on present times— God suffers the saints to be persecuted—He has said He will have a tried people; these trials will purify Zion: it is necessary that these trials & persecutions come, but those who thus fight against our people will have a fearful bill to foot. I expect to see tight times, but I am in Father’s hands.

Said she had made a covenant with the Lord that she would praise His name in the congregations of the saints, if He would give her a testimony. [p. 251]
