Miss Eliza R. Snow then addressed the meeting, she was pleased to see so many young gentleman & parents of the young Ladies present, did not want to separate the young Ladies & Gentleman, but wished the young ladies to meet together and prepare themselves to become useful in Zion It is very important that the young gentleman should also organize themselves into societies, was much pleased with the course the young ladies had pursued, hoped they would continue to improve, for there is always room for improviment, our course should be on ward, & upward, we should never, when rising to speak, say that we cannot edify any one, for if we have the Spirit of God we cannot fail to interest, exhorted us to use our influence with the young men & get them, as much as possible, to quit their evil habits and do better. She felt confident that we could do this if we would be united in our ifforts [efforts] and not associatiate [associate] with them unless they would comply with our resolutions. These ass. [associations] are great helps, and you Should never think the meetings are of little consequence, but always come to them & you will get the Spirit of the Lord, it requires a will to do right and we must be determined & not let anything turn us from the right, we always remember that God sees all we do, lay a foundation for good while young, never do anything bad, & we will never have anything to repent of, had seen some young people who were trying to keek [keep] the commandments of God treasuring up good instructions reading good books, and gaining wisdom and knowledge, these will be gread [great] & good men and women, then you see [p. 67] others doing just the opposite, living in such a way as to bring disgrace & Sorrow upon themselves and their parents She thought such ought to be pittied indeed, be careful of eachothers character and assist each other in doing right, be humble & the Lord will assist you, Said when she first commenced to organize the young ladies it was an uphill business, but she persevered and could now see the fruits of it, thought it was very gratif[y]ing to hear read minutes of Y. L. [Young Ladies] meetings held in Salt Lake City now. Pres. [Brigham] Young was very much pleased and had praised them considerably. Thought the parents should encourage their daughters to come tu [to] meeting & help them so that they could come.

Bishop [John W.] Hess felt very much gratified and instructed with what he had heard, [. . .] Said Sistirs Snow & [Zina D. H.] Young had spoken very encouragalagly [encouragingly] of the young ladies hoped that they would deserve it. we need to improve the young gentlemen are much better now than they used to be [. . .] [p. 68]
