Nephi Relief Society; Nephi, Utah Territory

[. . .] Sister [Amelia H.] Goldsbrough then introduced Sister Eliza R. Snow who said unless the spirit of God dictates what she says we will not be edified. Was pleased to hear the minutes that so many of the sisters have a testimony to bear.

When we know the Gospel is true, we advance spep [step] by step, and if we are no better or no happier to day than we were when we embraced the Gospel there is something wrong. If we have not progressed what is the reason, has God forgotten his promises or, have we done wrong. Spoke of the advantages and blessings we enjoy. Said we sometimes discard the lake of fire and brimstone, but thinks that if the boddy is burned in this life it would not equeal the disappointment and remorse of conscience we will feel if we fail to obtain the prize we set out for. If we want to enjoy the blessings of salvation we must live for them and earn them ourselves. Said we had better been born in any [n.p.] other dispensation, rather than fail in the things pertaining to eternity said there is no one on earth more essential than teachers. Our spirits must be fed in order to be live members.

These societies were organized not only to help the poor, but to discipline women. We should set our affections upon God and his kingdom and should so live that our boddies may be receptacles for the holy ghost. Spoke of home industries, whished to know what the sisters are doing in this direction, it is cheaper to clothe ourselves in silk that in wool. Every thing we make, helps to forward Zion, and her daughters should be beautiful, but not after the pattern of Babylon. The storing of grain is annother mission for we are called to lay up grain and prepare for famine for as sure as God lives, there is a famine at our doors.

Spoke of Celestial marriage, knows that God has revealed it and it is a correct principle. Every woman has an influence in society and if woman is refined, so will society be, for woman forms the caracter.
