I. From the Woman’s Exponent, 15 August 1879

[. . .] Sister Snow in her remarks referred to the good work these organizations were doing for our young people, also the necessity for us to become self-sustaining. Suggested that the sisters in the different settlements form committees and collect together a good supply of straw, and learn to braid and work it up into hats for their husbands, their sons and themselves; she said they should draw out of the elements the material they need.

II. From the Woman’s Exponent, 1 September 1879

[. . .] Sisters E. R. Snow, M. I. [Mary Isabella] Horne, S. [Sarah] M. Kimball and S. [Serepta] M. Heywood were present. [. . .]

Sister Horne [. . .] Recommended Sister Suow’s [Snow’s] poems for the perusal of the young people, and all the Church works. [. . .]

Sister Snow felt to urge the manufacture of straw, for that was within our reach; little boys and girls could help us materially in that branch. Suggested the forming of a committee in each association for that purpose; felt assured we could make a success of it. In Salt Lake there was too much of the gross element to go into that business. God had given us ability, and not altogether for our own personal advantage, but to help benefit others. Asked the Lord to bless the efforts of the young people of Bear Lake.
