Lined notebook measuring 7¾ × 5 × ⅝ inches. The cardboard cover is decorated with multicolored marbled paper and is half-bound in burgundy leather. The word “Record” is embossed on the front.

This seems to be a convenience notebook that EBW used in 1898 and 1899 before she had obtained an annual diary for those years. She also made a few notations in 1902. The notebook may have been kept in her office, since she made entries regarding financial transactions and regarding letters sent and received.

For 1898, the notebook contains entries for 1–11 and 21 January; financial notations for January and July–December; and a list of officers of the Utah state Daughters of the Revolution, which was organized that year.

For 1899, the notebook contains entries for 1–10 January; a list of letters written or received in January; and financial notations for January and February.

The notebook also contains a washing list dated 26 January 1902 and financial notations for March 1902.

The volume has preprinted page numbers 1 through 176. Entries begin on page 37 (not counting some financial data of unknown significance on page 3). Blank pages include 104–113, 121–148, 164–169, 171, and 173. There is evidence that at least one page has been torn from the front of the volume.

Wednesday Jan. 22. of this year 1902. about half past 4. p.m. I was set apart in the President’s office by President Joseph F. Smith the President of the Church‒ His Counselors J. R. Winder & A. H. Lund also laid their hands on my head with him‒ He said Emmeline B. Wells We the servants of the Lord and you’re fellow laborers lay our hands upon your head and set you apart to be the Secretary of the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and of the National Woman’s Relief Society and as you have been sustained by the votes of the members of the Church in Conference assembled to fill this office, and we pray that you may have vigor and strength to do this work to which you have been called of both bodily and mentally and be equal to all the duties devolving upon you in this position that you may have wisdom and judgment to accomplish all etc [p. 398] {p. 240}
